I get your drift, Marc. Boehner & Weiner... Hah!

Thom says "We need to restore the economic policies of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s that allowed all Americans to have an equal shot at success." Yeah Thom, good luck with that. - AIW

Given the statistics that emerged from this primary, it seems as if a paltry fraction of voters from previous polls went to vote this time:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/12/opinion/charles-m-blow-the-cantor-omen.html

    From the link:

<<<On one level, it is a glaring example — and condemnation — of the staggering levels of voter apathy that exist the further an election race is from presidential politics. Only about 65,000 people voted in the Republican primary in Virginia’s Seventh District on Tuesday. This is in a district of nearly 760,000 people, and in which Mitt Romney bested President Obama in 2012 by 15 percentage points.

In case you’re struggling with the math here, Ezra Klein of Vox broke it down this way: in 2012, 381,000 residents of the Seventh District “voted in the congressional election. Two hundred twenty-three thousand of them for Eric Cantor.” He continued:

“Cantor’s loss last night came at the hands of about 5 percent of his constituents. It came at the hands of about 9 percent of the total number of people who voted in the district’s 2012 congressional election. It came at the hands of about 16 percent of the people who voted for Cantor in that election. And though Cantor’s defeat is national in its effects, less than three-hundredths of 1 percent of the people who voted in the 2012 House elections voted against Eric Cantor last night.”>>>

In a state where crossover voting is allowed for primaries, perhaps all it means is that a staggering number of Democrats voted against Cantor. His supporters must have assumed it was in the bag and stayed home.

If Ingraham and company are being paid staggering sums of money to deliver 35,000 votes, then its not only an effective use of money, but one that is surprising accurate in the delivery of its payload.

But more than likely, its the crossover voting that is to blame.

Quote 2950-10K:Being the extreme Teabagger she is, I've asked my sister the same questions Jared Miller was asked, her answers are identical to his.

2950-10K ~ Don't feel bad. I have bunch of stalwart Conservative Republicans in my family. Fortunately they live faaaar away. Their attitude is "Just leave well enough alone." I'd trade them in a heartbeat for a bunch of Teabaggers. At least Teabaggers know something is wrong and needs to be fixed. They don't have a clue as to what that is; but, at least it's a start in the right direction.

Keep up the good work. The truth will make itself known eventually. At least with your sister there is some hope. If worst comes to worse, do what I did and move faaaar away.

Quote ChicagoMatt:If you were a business owner, would you even consider the rough areas of Chicago or any other city as a place to set up shop?

ChicagoMatt ~ Strange you should ask that question. Last night we saw a documentary about Detroit. It looked like Aztec ruins. It was mentioned that a good size house in the city could be bought at auction for $500. We discussed the opportunity briefly to ultimately decide to forget it. Even as a rental property, not interested.

If you are trying to say that Democrats have done little to reverse this problem you would be right. However, that doesn't change the fact that the problem originated with Republicans; and, if not for the deliberate cooperation of the two parties, it never would have gotten this bad. It takes two to tango. Now thanks to gross incompetence and self serving politicians the problem has grown far beyond the ability of any private interest to resolve. Only the government has the resources and power to fix the problem. If the government fails to do anything about it, what we are seeing is some of our greatest cities being turned into Aztec ruins right before our eyes. Next time I tour those ruins I will do so with a greater understanding of just what must have happened back then.

What a shame! The solution is so simple too. Just repeal free trade and reinstate our trade tariffs. This isn't rocket science. It could be resolved with the sweep of a pen. The only reason our greatest national treasures are on the altar being sacrificed are because of the whims of the wealthy who profit from slave labor abroad. It is not either of the two political parties; who, are just bought and paid for shills of these elite. Political parties serve as red herrings and nothing more. Politicians are paid patsys who take the blame for the real villains who hide behind glass shrouded ivory towers and iron gated cities and guarded compounds. That is why they neither have or offer any real solutions for the problems of the masses. To them We the People are invisible; and, until we get money out of politics we will continue to be the silent unseen majority.

ChicagoMatt ~ I don't know if I've ever heard anyone say anything sadder than that. Essentially you watch movies mainly for the sensory titillation and not for the content? Thats like listening to music and never hearing the lyrics. Thats like reading a book just because it has a lot of pretty pictures. If that is the result that high tech entertainment has provided our culture than it is actually a disservice indeed. How truly sad.

quote] A drone that massacres several dozen people at a wedding party in Iraq or Afghanistan may not even amuse or sadden someone in the U.S. even for a moment. [/quote]

I talk about drones a lot when I teach "War of the Worlds". The whole idea of the novel is, "How would it feel to be on the recieving end of a totally overwhelming force?" The audience for the novel was originally the British at the height of their empire. But it works well for Americans today. There are videos on youtube showing how drones are controlled from air-conditioned rooms in America, and how, for the people behind the controls, it looks and feels like a video game. Where is the honor in "fighting the enemy" if they have zero chance of fighting back? I always tell the students, it's like beating up a 3-year-old - sure, you can do it, but what does it say about you as a person if you do?

Maybe if those Chicago area shooters had decent paying jobs they wouldn't be out in the streets shooting people. Thank the Republicans for that!

Perhaps the Republicans got the ball rolling two generations ago, but what's going to help the situation now? If you were a business owner, would you even consider the rough areas of Chicago or any other city as a place to set up shop? I think what we all know, but don't want to admit, is that even if the economy were booming, at this point, the poor inner-city areas would still be bypassed and ignored and left out of the boom. You can't simultaneously want investment in your community, and then do everything you can to make your community unappealing to investors.

Nader points out 29 (as I remember) major issues where the far right and progressives agree. He thinks they currently are and in the future will join forces.

What I would really like to see, and I would support any candidate that ran on this platform, is whole-issue, big compromises. Like, for example, rather than both sides fighting over the minimum wage hike, I'd like to see one side give in completely, but in exchange for the other side giving in completely on another issue.

Dems get $15 an hour minimum wage, Reps get a lower tax rate for everyone.

Dems get single-payer healthcare, Reps get school vouchers.

    And so on...

I think that's the best way to get anything done anymore. Have each side decide their three biggest wants, then come up with compromises for both sides to get them both.

Fighting over each issue isn't doing anyone any good. But both sides think they're fighting the "good fight".

All the reprogramming was due to Ed Schulz saying he did not want to do his radio program anymore. There was not much thinking that went to the process, because there was no time. Is Sam Seder the guy you have to listen to now?

We get Jeff Santos here. He's awful. He takes 30 seconds to say what could be said in 5 seconds. It's frustrating to hear a guy stumble over a sentence, when you already know what he's trying to say.

The Conservative radio show that he's up against isn't that great either. No I have to spend that post-work, pre-dinner time interacting with my actual family members, if you can imagine...

I did not realize it was Ed's choice to stop. Did he give a reason? Whenever programming gets changed around, I always assume there is some executive at the radio station who needs to justify their position by changing things.

We get that a lot in education too - administrators at the district level who are in charge of something that's working just fine, but they need to show that they are doing something, so they change things.

you seem like a nice person. if you want to be an effective influencer, you need facts and math skills. What does the number 69 represent? What does 7 billion represent. I can assure you 69 divided by 7 billion doesn't equal 1 percent. You need to focus and identify to whom your anger is directed.

Matt, when you start throwing tired old conservative cliches at me like "socialist utopia", that's my cue to end the discussion.

This is the shit I used to hear TV pundits spouting off all the time. Whenever they "interviewed" people opposed to privatizing the commons, challenging basic principles and core beliefs of crony capitalists, advocating the kinds of policies that benefit everyone regardless of income or wealth (such as universal single-payer healthcare, for example, or public education, or public anything), these guardians of the status-quo would tag whatever their guests were endorsing as "socialism" or "utopia", or "socialist utopia", as if this whole concept of the public good was just some pie-in-the-sky leftist fantasy, nothing to be taken seriously. Dismissive, disingenuous, and so bloody arrogant! Their way of thwarting progressive change is to trivialize it to death.

Once someone starts patronizing me, the conversation is over, unless another blogger decides to pick up from where I left off. Some folks have a higher tolerance for bullshit than I do. Power to them! But I'm not going to put up with it. I value my time too much to engage in ongoing discussions with anyone who stoops to knee-jerk condescension of this sort. It turns me off. - Aliceinwonderland

The Kochs and their out of control counterparts/media, have opened the gates of hell. Bundy and the Miller's offer us only a slight glimpse at what's coming.

Being the extreme Teabagger she is, I've asked my sister the same questions Jared Miller was asked, her answers are identical to his. Her and her husband are obsessed with Fox News, Beck, Alex Jones, etc. They're gun crazy, they constantly harp about government spending being out of control, but have voted happily for the Republicans responsible for the spending and much of what they say is wrong with the government . As a Halliburton contractor in Iraq, her ex marine husband made over $100,000 per year, tax free, yet they see no connection between the military budget and the out of control spending they profess to worry about. I can go on and on, but the point I'm making is simple. They're disconnected from reality directly as a result of billionaire sponsored propaganda.

They, like the Miller's, the Bundy Ranch gang, and countless more Teabaggers, are hoping to plunge this country into a confused and violent mess. This is the face of the current Republican/Tea Party, and billionaires like the Kochs have full ownership of this seemingly inevitable chaos.

There is no way to convince these Teabaggers that they're simply unknowingly supporting a small group of tyrannical billionaire Fascists. They can kiss their, "don't tread on me," and "taxed enough already," goodbye.

Because our unions have all been wrecked by the capitalist pigs...ever since Ray-gun.

I agree that we have all benefited greatly from the Unions in our history. If it were not for unions, we all would be working 18 hour shifts, with no breaks, no benefits, no vacations.

But they are not as strong as they used to be. However, I did find that it was a real pain having to deal with union workers, as a non-union person. I couldn't do my job when I went into a union shop without all kinds of rules and restrictions. It made doing my job take a lot longer, having to wait on the union workers to show up, so that I could beg them to show them how to do things. It was a waste of time and was awkward as hell.

And OU812 is correct in that there has been a lot of corruption in unions. But there is a lot of corruption in politics as well.
