Thom Hartmann: Copenhagen is ongoing, global warming is ongoing, global climate deterioration. Senator James Inhofe coming out today with a pretty bad distortion of this. This is pretty amazing. This morning on CNN's American Morning, to discuss the Copenhagen climate change conference, James Inhofe says, “And just this morning the meteorologists, one of the groups, has said that they’re changing their position.” Right.

Thom Hartmann: On the line with us, one of my favorite legislators, I think one of the genuinely honest men in Washington DC, congressman Peter DeFazio of my state of Oregon, representing the 4th district here. Congressman DeFazio, welcome to the program.

Carrie Lukas: Hey, thank you so much for having me on.

Thom Hartmann: You know, in 1935 Sinclair Lewis wrote a book called “It Can't Happen Here.” He said “When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag carrying a cross.” What’s going on in American politics right now? Are we seeing a rise, a populist uprising, a revolt? A genuine grassroots revolt on the right, and frankly on the left as well? In different forms, in various ways.

Is it time for a revolution? 'La Révolution' I just heard from the control room, thank you Jacob.

Thom Hartmann: So tell us what’s going on there and what the sense of things is as we begin this first day.

Thom Hartmann: On the line with us, Katrina vanden Heuvel, the editor and publisher of The Nation Magazine since 1995, co editor and editor of several books including the most recent, "Going Rouge! Sarah Palin: an American nightmare". And for those of you watching on Free Speech TV, on Dish Network, I’m holding the book up here to the camera. And Katrina, welcome to the show.

Thom Hartmann: "Liberals are a useless lot," writes Chris Hedges in today’s TruthDig.com and CommonDreams.org among other places. "They talk about peace and do nothing to challenge our permanent war economy. They claim to support the working class, and vote for candidates that glibly defend the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Okay, I want to just, I want to channel the Vice President of the United States to you for just a moment and then pick up your phone calls here. Back in 1944, because, and I think this is apropos of today because what’s happened is in ’44, we were in the early stages of the beginning of the New Deal era when the middle class got strong and America became strong and the Fascists, that is the corporatists, the people who wanted to merge corporations and state interests, the Fascists were a minority in the United States, a very small number.

I have been saying for some time that we need to join forces with the teabaggers, the teapartiers, whatever you want to call them. They’re even having debates in their own ranks about what to call them. But that there is a populist movement in the United States that is ultimately trans-partisan. Part of it is suckers, right. Part of it is people who are, you know, 150,000, 200,000 dollar bus shows up with a giant new paint job and they hop on and they think it’s a grass roots movement. But part of, nonetheless, these are kind of the low information voters.

Thom Hartmann: So for the last week or so I’ve been watching this situation in Dubai with the company that George Bush wanted to sell the ports of the United States to. Saying that they’re going to take a holiday from paying interest payments on the debt that they have. And scratching my head. You know, I’ve read probably a dozen articles in the Financial Times about this, other parts of the financial press, you know, poking around the Internet.

Thom Hartmann: But of course, the first hour of our program as always, Senator Bernie Sanders . Our, the, I think of him as America’s senator. The, with our national, the longest running media, national town hall, political town hall I think in the history of the world going on right now. Thom Hartmann: And you’re in Washington DC today.

You know, every now and then you come across a story that is so shocking that even though you already know it, you already intuit it, you already, you know, broadly understand that yeah this is what’s going on, that when the details are laid out in black and white it’s, it’s just, you know, shocking, is the best word for it. I found one of those, actually three of them I have to share with you today.
