The Mississippi bill that allows Christians to discriminate against LGBT people was signed into law earlier this month - but it's not set to go into effect until July 1st. Nonetheless - the bill is at the center of thorough legal discussion that has been made more complex by the fact that the Supreme Court ruled last year that everyone has a right to marriage - regardless of sexual orientation. But this bill makes it law that any shop owner could refuse service to someone so long as it's on the basis of one of three beliefs: that marriage is between a man and a woman - that sex is reserved for heterosexual marriage - or that gender is determined at bith as male or female. But isn't this just the Christian equivalent of Shari'a Law? Why are we allowing people to discriminate based on their beliefs?
