Just an observation. There is no picture of New York City with a 6' sea level increase, as indicated in today's column. And there is at least one grammatical error. I only write this because this happens quite frequently, and the quality and Information of the article is worth writing with proper editing and attention to detail.

I think making a law that caps carbon, taxes and passes back to the people the profits of the fossil fuel industry is a great idea. However, an even better idea is a law that would make the fossil fuel industry directly responsible for all losses and damage incurred by the climate change they are causing. In fact, we could take a little lesson from the USPS and make that law to cover future losses and damage as well. That would not only include things like the BP oil spill but things like Katrina, Snowmageddon, coastal flooding, loss of cities, and all those record breaking midwest twisters. Profits are the main motivation for pushing fossil fuels on the public. Start stripping those industries of those profits and you starve those executives of all their motivation real fast.

Stecoop01 ~ That was a beautiful poem. Shame you don't have the name of the author.
Mark Saulys ~ AIW is right. You write very well and have a lot to contribute. I personally have learned a lot from you and appreciate your contribution very much; especially, in this particular thread. I'm sure she and I are not the only ones who feel that way. Please, keep up the great work. OU is full of hot air--amongst other things.
Mark, there is nothing wrong with your choice of words. You have been an important contributor to this blog for a long time. Your background and life experience gives you a unique perspective that adds a lot to the discusson. Please don't stop! - AIW
Thanks so much for all your kind words folks, I was thinking I wasn't being heard 'cause I just didn't employ effective verbeage, i.e., I wasn't at all clear about what I was saying and was just rambling on like some irrelevant old clown. I was hoping, therefore, for people to try to read it once more and try to get past the funky wording to the basic gist of it - which I thought was worthwhile.
Should really write more clearly so people don't have to go through so much to figure it out. Sorry 'bout that. Thanks so much again, everybody, for your supportive words.
An update of our earlier item regarding the execution today in Texas, Mr. Pee Wee was a sheepherder from Germany of Chinese extraction. The governor and he were close friends and often visited when the Governor toured the Angora flocks in west Texas. Shares in Pets-R-Us fell four points before in closing bell today.
I'm going to go a little off topic and share with you something I culled from the internet over a decade ago. The prevailing attitudes in the United States, and for that matter, the world, it seems very appropriate now:
The Cold Within
Six men trapped by happenstance, in black and bitter cold; Each man possessed a stick of wood, or so the story's told. Their dying fire in need of wood, the first man held his back; For on the faces around the fire, he noticed one was black. The next man looking across the way, saw one, not of his church; And wouldn't bring himself to give his little stick of birch. The third man sat, in tattered clothes, he gave his coat a hitch; Why should he put his log to use, to warm the idle rich? The rich man just sat back and thought, of the wealth he had in store; And how to keep what he had gained, from the lazy shiftless poor. The black man's face bespoke revenge, as the fire passed from his sight; For all he saw in his stick of wood, was a chance to spite the white. The last man of this forlorn group, did nothing except for gain; Giving only to those who gave, is how he played the game. So, their logs held tight - in death's still grasp - was proof of human sin; They died not from the cold without, they died from the cold within.
With all this talk about climate change, sea level rise, and the Republican denial of both, it reminds me of a line from the movie "Meteor'. Brian Keith's character was a Russian scientist trying to convince his superiors of the coming cataclysm, and, after getting no where, remarked, "The Volga is about to overflow her banks, and we are discussing swimming lessons!"
Mark S -- We have so many victims if is hard not to defend them. The one thing the RW points out that no one seems to respond to is the accusation if the victims would have worked harder they would not be where they are. No one seems to say how hard do you think they should work? How smart do they have to be?
I think the underlying economic force we should look to is the law of supply and demand (duh). The key supply and demand force would be the labor force vs the corporate suppliers. With this in mind, I think the answer to how hard they should work is how hard they work when the unemployment rate is around 4%. Greenspan gave more power to the suppliers by trying to say the unemployment rate should be around 5.4%, so the workers had that level of insecurity.
AIW -- Sven was referring to the IPCC not the NIPCC. The IPCC is the report put out by the UN. The IPCC warns us how bad climate change is. Sven is referring to 5 or 6 pages in the 1400+ pages of the IPCC. Those 5 or 6 pages are why your course of action (97% of scientists agree) is appropriate. I am still anlayzing those 5 or 6 pages. It seems the contributors to that section do not understand detecting a signal in a very noisy sample.
Mr. Leroy H. Jones was executed today in Huntsville, Texas for the murder last week of the Govenor's pet German Shepherd, Pee Wee. The execution was the first to use a drone for that purpose. Regarding the twelve witnesses killed as collateral causalities, the Governor said "swift justice has its benefits and it's drawbacks. You can't make a salad without breaking a few eggs." Munitions stocks went up three percent upon the news.
The more appropriate and to the point term for these people who are anti-American is Right Wing Christofascist as they are clearly turning the country into a fascist theocracy and the American people seem to not be able to rise to the threat as the Cristofascist's have been studily moving forward since the 1950's

Skip in Boulder ~ "Christofascist" is a brilliant and accurate term. Thanks for sharing!
Given to which people? The govt is already investing well in infrastructure, providing good-paying jobs primarily to men.

Off topic: When conservatives say the magic of the free market will solve all our problems, is that magical thinking?
He may not qualify for being totally sociopathic and may be 'familiar' with the word:empathy, but I doubt he ever felt it or thought about it.

Sadly, it is too late for "swimming lessons".

Mark S -- I thought it was "real good" also. I hope you are collecting your blogs so you can publish them.
thumper -- That is not a spoon they are feeding them with. It is a bag of cash.
2950 - 10K -- You need to watch "Last Week with John Oliver" on HBO. We dangerously procrastinate on both.
