To understand where the blame belongs, you need to check the votes of Congress.

  • Lobbyists Are Already Cashing in on the TPP!   11 years 15 weeks ago

American corporations and politicians of both parties want the TPP in spite of the damage it will cause. People need to somehow grasp that the US is no longer Top Dog. Corporations have steadily increased their reliance on workers and consumers outside of the US, using taxpayer money to build factories and offices around the world, shipping our jobs out.

Yep, a.k.a., "NAFTA on steroids." Why I think this is a hopeless situation: People don't seem to understand what the "free trade" agreements are all about. It's bizarre to see liberal publications rail against "NAFTA on steroids" one day, and then encourage people to support Hillary Clinton for president the next! (Hillary Clinton, of course, was a poweful lobbyist for NAFTA.)

And speaking of "Cash"....have you looked at yours lately? Looks like the news media is ramping up it's stories on counterfeit bills circulating.

Have you ever gone into a store and bought something and handed the checker a $100 or $50 or even a $20? They often look pretty hard at those bills to make sure they aren't counterfeit. They don't mind embarrassing you while they check that bill! They either hold them up to the light or they use a special device. I had an awkward few minutes the other day when I handed a restaurant cashier a $50 that I just got from my bank. He looked at it for quite a while then took it to the back where he showed it to the manager. I asked if the bill was ok but he wouldn't say anything about it. He just gave me my change. I don't think I'll eat at that restaurant again.

Even though I understand that it is good practice to make sure you're not getting passed a fake bill, it does tend to send a message that "they don't trust you"! And not only that...it creates a few moments of heightened tension... that if that bill turned out to be counterfeit... the cops could be handcuffing you and putting you in jail! How embarrassing! All of your possessions at your residence searched or even confiscated...possibly even sold at an auction even before you are able to clear your name.

Think back a few years ago when people's homes were invaded, possessions confiscated..even homes, or residents murdered by over-zealous police breaking into their homes in the middle of the night. (And some of those were cases of mistaken identity.) They killed people that were totally innocent...all the while our government was importing, or facilitating drug lord's smuggling drugs into the US. They even smuggled drugs into our country in the body bags of dead American soldiers returning from Vietnam.

Raygun (Reagan) was so intent on keeping "Communism" from spreading to our Central American neighbors that..in order to support the rebels fighting yet another popularly elected leader (Daniel Ortega)...Raygun, and the right wing jingos of America (RWJOA)...were willing to indirectly murder US citizens who died from those US imported drugs.

Such a situation might cause many people to check their bills that they get. But, I'm sure most won't and may one day get handcuffed and led off to jail when they least suspect it. Think of the lawyer's fees and other costs!

And what if they find some suspect bills? Would they run off to the bank, even if they just got them from the bank's ATM, to exchange their bills for non-counterfeit bills? Or would they call the police to report it? You know how crooked and opportunistic our politicians and police can be at times.

So, maybe the prospect of being an honest citizen and a victim will give way to just taking the loss and burning any fake bills you get. Or, would you take the chance and try to pass it off to some other poor victim? Once you get stuck with a counterfeit...they don't reimburse you...it's your loss.

So what if you go to the bank's ATM and make a withdrawal and you scrutinize each bill you get. Do you hold each bill up into the light to see if it has embedded watermarks right their at the ATM? In your car? And if you find one do you take it into the bank and tell them that their ATM has just dispensed counterfeit bills?

It's long been known that "they" are trying to dissuade us from cash transactions. Cash transactions tend to keep the transactions anonymous...they can't collect data on us...unless you use an in-store discount card...then it won't matter if you use credit, debit, or cash. They collect all that data on you...and could someday use it against you. I try to keep most of my transactions in cash. But, then, I have to worry about carrying cash and making ATM withdrawals and the possibility that those ATMs may dispense counterfeit bills.

Of course, I could make withdrawals inside the bank with the tellers and hold each one of those bills up to the light to check for the watermark right there in front of the teller. And if I found a bill I thought looked suspicious, ask for a different one. I really doubt that the authorities will handcuff the bank teller or even the manager for passing counterfeit bills. They're "special"! What a great message that would send to the banks!! Everyone hold up the lines to check each bill...sending the message that "we don't trust the banks"!

Kick the TPP out of our country. Who do they think they are.

  • Lobbyists Are Already Cashing in on the TPP!   11 years 15 weeks ago

If the TPP is as wonderful as its promoters claim, there should be no shame in publishing its terms. All parties to an agreement - and every American is a party, willfully or not - should be able to view and respond, if desired, to its proposed terms.

Contrary to claims of TPP "secretists", any agreement that can't withstand the light of day has little chance of being a fair deal, at least for those who will have it shoved down their throats.

Lay all of the terms on the table. Show everyone what a truly-wonderful deal it is, and for whom, and then let informed minds debate it.

With huge rewards already being lavished upon the lobbyist/architects of this secretive deal, many of whom were behind the tanking of America's economy, there is an urgent question as to whose interests are being considered.

Yes....the banks can't seem to be fair with people, maybe the USPS can be

  • Should the Post Office be allowed to offer basic banking services?   11 years 15 weeks ago

Obviously email and texting has taken a big bite out of the USPS revenue. Giving the government the ability to handle banking with less fees is a no-brainer. What infuriates me is the arrogant conservative pigs that think they know it all and that government can't do anything right compared to private enterprise. The truth is something serviced or produced by the government does not have profit as its goal. It has a JOB WELL DONE as its goal. Grover Norquist wants to drown our government in a bathtub. Well I say the government needs to drown HIM in the bathtub! These looney conservatives think the taxpayer dollars all belong to them and they need to funnel them all to their friends and family, particularly the 1%. So far they have been doing a splendid job of it, but America is like Popeye. We can only stands so much... and then we can't stands no more!

Just watched "Capitalism: A Love Story" again from YouTube. The banksters bailout of $700 billion will be dwarfed by the impact of TPP. Further looting of the country sponsored by the Obama White House on behalf of the plutocracy! I'm sure he will be well-rewarded.

    The Russians are coming!

I don't equate Republicans with "America" - far from it, they must be Russian because they hate America - thus bashing them is not "bashing America". It is, in fact, quite patriotic.

  • IMF Debunks Austerity.   11 years 15 weeks ago

All the egg-head economists with their complicated equations have missed the most simple and effective equation of all:

employed at living wages/well-paid workers = monied consumers = long-term profit for business = strong economy = strong country

Don't forget that the wealthy/corpororations have TAKEN AND ARE HOARDING TRILLIONS from our economy. They need to be forced to bring it back--THE DOLLAR BELONGS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND ITS ECONOMY--it is a TOOL not a REWARD.

  • IMF Debunks Austerity.   11 years 15 weeks ago

Yes, the system is rigged and it's rigged in such a manner as to make the working class pay the bill for our own demise. A good case in point being inflated commodities prices. We have to drive to work which means indirectly we have to pay for the Koch/Rove propaganda spending which promotes their Fascism. The Kochs artificially inflate the price of oil and thus we help pay for their insane quest for more, more, more, more, more!..... and then they will just die!....... and take the planet done with them. Obviously there's no real point or rational thought process involved in the complete maddness of never being able to get enough of getting more. Our government is mandated to step in at this point, before our society and planet totally collapse. If it doesn't we need a new one.

  • We Are Not Prepared For Climate Change.   11 years 15 weeks ago

    I so agree with you.

As an aside, it IS cultural. It is pure European Culture dating back, back to Rome, at least (I'm not sure about how bad slavery in Greece was). European Culture devised the Slaver Economy from at least the time the Romans destroyed their North African rivals and enslaved them en masse; they did the same to the tribes Caesar defeated in Gaul, etc. AND IT DIDN'T STOP with the Romans. It went on and on. Using West Africans was just a European Slavers' adaptation of their Slaver Economy.

For clarification of this check out Nell Irvin Painter's book "The History of White People". It clarifies that Europeans enslaved each other when they could. It clarifies that the ugly underbelly of The Enlightenment was about new freedoms for some, simultaneous with enslavement for others.

  • Another Reason to Say "No" to Monsanto   11 years 15 weeks ago

What's really bizarre about the Monsanto Round-Up Industrial Agriculture Model (spray the weeds away), is that it came out with this horrid concept at the same time developers of more sustainable agricultural practices were refining programs that were low-cost and didn't harm yields -- like something called No-Till farming, where weeds are left to die and nourish the soil and protect the surface of the soil from the eroding effects of wind and water -- that is, adopting a concept about weeds and their life cycle as being a friend to the farmer, not an enemy.

But the I.G. Farber and Friends "better killing through chemistry" crowd just have too much money from their other petro-chemical creations -- industrial materials, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and fertilizers and all manner of household stuff like paints and so on. All that money helps to pay for endless marketing and whitewashing of negative realities, and advertising in the farm press, and schmoozing of the farmers. Finally, when some ag-businesses got so huge to be corporate entities themselves -- corporations at that point are often sharing directors of the board and they don't even have to work at selling their ideas, their products are just accepted; plus, the time comes when farmers and giant ag-business growers only get financing and venture capital if they toe the line -- and it all just becomes a circular head nod no matter how stupid and destructive the products are -- even like Monsanto's Round-Up and Frankensteinseeds.

  • Another Reason to Say "No" to Monsanto   11 years 15 weeks ago

mrrob -- I'm moved to correct your correction. I worked in agricultural publishing for awhile and, actually, the folks in that field refer to crop problems as 'pests' -- be they insects, fungus, weeds. So, that means "pesticides" is an umbrella term that includes INSECTICIDES, FUNGICIDES, HERBICIDES. Also, the companies that make herbicides (such as Roundup) also have been known to make other pesticide products.

The pesticide industry has never cared about its products' effects on users or consumers. In the old days, if the mule's skin peeled off after the poison was applied to the crop, paying for another mule was just part of the cost of doing business. And it helped these poison-making companies alot when there were absolutely no consumer protections. And it helps them today when no one does epidemiological studies on migrant farm workers.

And it tells us alot when we learn that these companies' products can be interchangably used between farm use and use as a weapon of mass destruction -- like Round-Up in soybean cultivation and Round-Up as Agent Orange for defoliating whole forests in Vietnam. How many generations will it take for this "belief"/faith-based confidence in the benefits of POISON to play-out so that this Death Cult approach to all aspects of our existence can be rejected?

    Quote noworriesbehappy comment on theguardian.com:
...the Guardian has joined in the anti-Russian hysteria with the rest of the US and European media. In fact RT is one of the very few news outlets to mention the neo-nazi Svoboda and right sector mob from Galicia. These armed gangs are a daily and existential threat to any minorities they don't like-- Russians, Jews, Hungarians, Communists etc. If you don't think Svoboda are neo-nazis just check their own website. It is a fact that these thugs led the armed insurrection that violently overthrew the elected Ukrainian government. It is also a fact that they now have posts in the unelected government that now rules much of Ukraine and receive support from hairpiece Kerry.
Why do YOU think that the vast majority of Crimean people see their Russians brothers as their saviors from these fascist elements? The Russian people have long, long memories and know from bitter experience what nazi scum are capable of.
Of course this is not the whole story and Putin is no saint, but why has all this been hidden by the mainstream western press and in particular the Guardian?
Why are the elite leaders in the west and their news outlets now supporting these self proclaimed fascists?...are we the bad guys now?

I say again what I and many readers from the Guardian want are FACTS not Propaganda. We can then make our own minds up, we don't need you to do this for us Guardian. FACTS please, even the unpalatable ones. Wake up Guardian before we set up our own website.

    http://discussion.theguardian.com/discussion/p/3najb

Practically the same thing happened in South Ossetia. Western eyewitnesses visiting South Ossetia spoke out in favor of the Russians who the Ossetian people welcomed as saviors against the murdering western-backed Saakashvili government in Georgia. There was some egging on and encouragement from the US as usual..something about concurrent joint naval or military exercises just preceding the Georgian attacks on S. Ossetia. And it was so funny when that young girl, a S. Ossetian, went on Fox News and thanked the Russians for helping to save them from the Georgians. Fox suddenly ran out of time as they always do in such situations where they have lost control of their right-wing propaganda. In Nov of 2008 the Georgian President Saakashvili admitted that he started the war.

So, Liz Wahl was upset over the Russian propaganda that Neo-Nazis were a large part of overthrowing the Ukrainian government?

And, of course, let's not forget that the US is using Al Qaida to fight our proxy wars in Syria. Al Qaida, our enemy? Al Qaida that is cutting off heads of Christians in Syria?

Ken Ware: So you're still living in the olden days of Red Baiting and Communist witch hunting? With all that has happened in our country...overthrow of elected foreign governments, illegal invasions and murdering innocent foreign children, illegal occupations of other countries, fomenting unrest and destabilization of other countries... just to name a few things that our criminal government has done. Oh, did I mention importing drugs while pretending that they were carrying out a war against them? I'd mention the traitorous false flag operation of 9/11 that US insiders created in order to push through their goals of total control over the whole world...starting with spying on and crushing civil liberties of their own citizens...but I don't want to upset you too much. ;-} I wouldn't want to shatter your warm and fuzzy, jingoist and xenophobic, comfy little paradigm. Keep waving those little flags and it won't be the communists who bury you...it will be the master manipulators in key positions in our ruling elite that will do that! You'll be like the fool in the movie The Wicker Man. To be sacrificed so that the rich and powerful crazies can fulfill their fantasies of exclusionary greatness.

And as for Ms. Wahl...I was certainly no fan. She always seemed rather strange and out of place anyway. I'm certainly not going to miss her. Maybe she'll go on over to Fox Snooze now. I think she would fit right in with all those flunkies spouting right wing nonsense.

All governments will try to propagandize...what is so new about that? But many of the stories on RT were more than propaganda...they were the truth. And those stories about US hegemony and imperialism were so obviously the truth that it really didn't take any effort in the way of propaganda to make the US look bad. The US didn't need any help in that regard. It was just so obvious to so many of us what the US was doing...which is why RT is so popular with those of us who know when they have been screwed by the owners of right wing propaganda news networks who have a vested interest in keeping Americans dumb and uniformed of the truth.

After all of the double-crossing and two-timing schemes of US banks and corporations and right-wing news networks who outright bought power in government allowing them to financially rape the 99% out of their financial well being, you old fossils of the McCarthyism era still bend over for the capitalist pigs who have constantly screwed us? Old fools are hard to free themselves of the shackles of capitalist pig propaganda.

What has happened in the Ukraine is the result of the US and Europeans fomenting internal dissent and destabilization...right out of the game plan of CIA proxy corporations and deliberately illusive sounding named "liberal" organizations like Freedom House and International Center for Non-violent Conflict. The "non-violent" part means that, of course, we don't initially send in our troops (the non-violent part...but violence does come..and lots of other people do lose their lives). We instigate, fund, and train internal dissent to willing subjects (or bribed ones) in those countries that have a beef with the ruling regimes in those countries. We also send in mercenaries to incite violence and make it look like it came from the regime we want to overthrow.

Does anybody find it strange that Hartmann's entire makeup of his blog and TV program is to continually bash America? He is paid for his program by the Russian Government and I believe that is why the content of his show and blog are continually bashing our Government. He throws a little red meat out and those who are constantly angry about our country have no trouble venting their anger. Why don't you take a trip to Eastern Europe and see how great the other side lives. One of the anchors on RT, Liz Wahl, resigned from Russian Television today, over the way the management (Russian Government) tries to down play what is happening in the Ukraine and the Russian invasion of their territory, much like the USSR pulled off in Hungry in 1956 and more recently in Georgia. It gets very boring to hear the same old attacks on our country by people like AIW and Palin just to mention a couple of angry people. Why is it that Hartmann only find things to complain about and seem to ignore the positive aspects of our Nation. Hartmann provides the platform and the haters jump on it for better or for worse. Just once I would like to read something, anything of a positive nature come out of Hartmann and his shows. He makes his living, much like the hated R. Limbaugh, and always portrays himself as the righteous left, when in reality he is no different than the rest of the hate mongers out there, who make their living out of getting the crowd worked up so they can vent and tune in again tomorrow. That is why I stopped watching anything on RT, including Hartmann, who works for the Russian Government indirectly, by slamming America with a tainted twist of hatred. After reading all the comments from this blog, I must say it appears the Russian's have succeeded in doing what they pay for on RT. K.W.

Kend, the hippies on the communes didn't need money. The ones I knew produced everything they needed on their farms. You rarely saw members in town.

There were some giant ones that had so many members they could elect their own representatives to Congress. Unfortunately, they refused to vote because they didn't want to force their will upon their neighbors.

Liberal governments don't run out of money, they tax you going in and coming out. It's the conservatives that intentionally bankrupt government so that nothing would restrain their kleptocracy.
