Ownership is a temporary fiction. It is an invention of the mind and like all mental constructions,it is temporary, having nothing to do with ultimate reality.
As with all social conventions, the idea of ownership arises from the fallacies that we hold as firm beliefs-in this case, the Second Fallacy About Life, which is that there is NOT ENOUGH of whatever it is we think we need to be happy.
Life seeks always to sustain itself .That is a Basic Life Principle. We as AN EXPRESSION OF LIFE will seek to do the same thing,so we have built a mental construct around how to do this and it plays itself out as a social convention that we call ownership.
We claim ownership over all those things that we wish to see sustained.Seeking to express the LIfe Principle of Sustainability, we claim ownership of our own body, then the body of our mate, then of our children,we say that our children are ours and we treat them like we own them.
So too, with land ,and other articles and property. We have it that the very planet on which we live is something that we actually OWN at least in parcels.
We have decided that this perfect sphere this celestial element ,does not belong to life itself, but rather to individual human beings,so we have divvied up the very earth itself, placing imaginary boundaries on that which has no boundaries and claiming personal ownership not only of the land itself, but of the ground and minerals and resources within it.
The truth is we are all merely stewards ,seeking to take GOOD CARE of that over which we have been given stewardship-including our bodies, our mates and children, the land on which we live and all else that we have in our care .
These are not our possessions, but simply articles that have been placed in our care ,They are ours temporary, only for safekeeping. We are asked by Life itself to sustain them,to express the Life Principle of Sustainability, but not to declare that we own them, this thought is not in any lasting sense FUNCTIONAL.
Nothing that is possessed by anyone is possessed by them forever thus ownership is a fallacy.
This is really harming humans doing so much damage to our planet and each other.
Like ALL animal species - and humans are an animal - we need clean water, clean air, and clean food in order to exist. We need these more than anything else...Even more than oil. Sure we have become somewhat dependent on this "black gold" over the last century or so, and in many ways crude oil is a resource that has been key in our daily lives more so than just fuel for your car. However, biding over melting polar caps and going to war over oil certainly proves that we (society) view "life" as being cheap. Talk about having our priorities backwards! It's time for ALL Nations to stop trying to "rule" the world...Change our way of thinking so people and planet last.
It goes without saying that the Buffett bill is dead. The Republicans rule with the Fillibuster, and if there is a Super Majority to pass the bill, the Buffett Bill has to pass the House with a Republican Majority. The Republicans have perfected their game, they have the perfect formula developed over 30 years since President Reagan. The Republicans have changed our democracy with tax breaks to the Rich who can buy everything, formed their Think Tanks, formed ALEC, and bought our free press.
Nationalizing our natural resources is only the first step we need to take to help curb the power of corporate america and the world. We need power to the people, not the uber rich (Romney rich)or corporations in control of our government. If we fail then we, as people, lose. If you have ever seen or heard of the on-line game "Eve - online" you can get an idea of what we are looking at. Just in case you don't know what this game is about, it is a space game, but that isn't the important part of the game. It is the background story of the game. It says the government becomes a 'puppet' to corporations and they really control what the people know and do. And as we all know, or should know, corporations only look at the bottom line and not what people need or want.
Democratic Socialism has always been the solution for serving the best interests of the vast majority and certainly applys here. Unfortunately the elite few with most of the money and power fully realize this to be fact. FUNCTIONAL DEMOCRACY scares the hell out of these power lusting maniacs. I hate to admit it, but as long as they are able to subvert truth, via citizens united and corp mass media, they win!.....so let's fight for change and real Democracy like we mean it...... It may well have to get ugly!
Lets not forget that "sugar"--as listed on nutritional labels--may now actually contain GMO sugar beet derrived pseudo-"sugar". Yumm. Obama and Michelle sure do care about healthcare...for themselves.
The Mrs. claims to espouse organic ideals in her PERSONAL garden. However, this admin hasn't taken any steps to change the tides for the public's awareness of GMOs/rGBH/cloned food/sludge fertilization etc. Just ask yourselves: who is michael taylor?
Only the physical presence of the masses can stop this. We have a duty to fulfill and it's NOT to the government, the military or any other specail interest group. It's to the earth. Be ready to walk, many miles, possibly without water, for an extended period and distance, if you want to participate in stopping this. Pass it along so you have good company on the journey.
Canada and Russia have been doing their best, jointly might I add, for many years now, to protect and observe the actions of those with bad intent. Our military is focused there primarily. Many other countires are on board as well, to preserve and protect the Artic. Yes, we continue to have vested interest of the oil there, but approached improperly is the end of oil and much much more. Tar Sands Project in Canada and the Pipeline is attempting to lay claim to everything - land - water - and of course, the oil in a rushed and exploitive manner that can result in nothing good. I trust we who are genuinly active in our pursits, and there are many, shall not let this project bear any fruit from the get-go. The development is already underway, but we're hoping the money wasted will - never be recuped, because we all know, the earth can't be if they succeed. Can't happen. Period.
I think I heard "philogastriciously ugly", but I just got my headphones in as Thom was saying it. If I have that right, it should mean something like "belly-loving". o_O
Or maybe it was "physogastriciously", which refers to the huge abdomens of insect queens. I have to admit those are pretty gross looking.
Corporations are like vampires. They will suck the life out of every country or land that allows them too, without a care, only to move on to the next profit motive once the blood runs dry. Corporations are not our friends but our enemies and will continue to be so until the profit motive goal is rethought.
Nationalizing oil is one way that we could protect ourselves.
It's a sad reality that if they put as much money and activity into cleaner, greener industries, and alternatives as they put into feeding their greed, this world would be a whole lot better off. This planet is all we have. We all know what happens in space when take away life support. Greed = destruction. It's just sick and wrong!!!
How do we stop this? Greed continues it's march to the Artic! You are right that we should own our own national resources but we would still drill in the Artic! I'm afraid there is no stopping it from happening no matter how many are against it as long as it benefits the 1% and corporations. What they seem to be ignoring is that their money will not buy back our clean air, clean water, wilderness and wildlife. They are not only sealing our fate but also their own.
I got an e-mail today saying GE is a "taxhole". I don't know if Thom can really get away with saying that on the air, but it would be great to apply that to any corporation or rich person that doesn't pay or doesn't want to pay their share of taxes. <cough>Romney</cough>.
"...one may safely say that it would be no sin if statesmen learned enough of history to realize that no system which implies control of society by privilege seekers has ever ended in any other way than collapse."

This quote is from the conclusion of a speech given before German leaders during Hitler's rise to absolute power, referenced by Erik Larsen in his excellent history of the nightmare of the Nazi rise to power, "In the Garden of Beasts".

And how many people have even heard of Sibel Edmonds' new book "Classified Woman" that was published on March 9, 2012 and is now "Out of print-limited availability" at Amazon.com? Every one of the 15 reviewers have given the book a solid 5 stars.
Here is a comment by one reviewer--
"The story of Sibel Edmonds is a window into the real-life criminal world that exists in our own government, as well as many other governments, and about which most American citizens are either uninformed or in denial. There are millions of people all around the world who question the official account of September 11th, 2001, an account incidentally whose credibility has been called into question by the very commission who crafted it. And yet, any mention of 9/11 in any context by anyone other than those who continue to use it to this day to justify war crimes is seen as "crazy," "nutty," or "paranoid." In a rare display of bipartisanship, so-called conservatives and so-called liberals dutifully fall in line and support the War on Terror narrative, happily giving up their rights along the way. It is as if the Bush Administration, and now the Obama Administration, who have been caught red-handed telling lie after lie to support the agendas of the military-industrial complex, the Wall Street bankers, the war profiteers, and the transnational corporate crime syndicate, simply somehow MUST be telling the truth about the crime of the century -- a horrific crime of untold proportions which was committed on live TV, thereby ensuring maximum impact to the psyche. After all, this is America! If the 9/11 crime, and the following alleged cover-up, were a conspiracy by any measure, then surely we would know about it. Somebody would have talked. Somebody would have blown the whistle. It would be impossible to conduct such an elaborate operation without somebody, somewhere in the government coming forth and exposing the criminals ... right?
Well here you have it. In your face. A real-life, 100% credible 9/11 whistleblower. One who has a story whose facts are not even challenged by the government in any real way because it is widely known that those facts can be verified by classified documents in the possession of the government. Instead, those terrified of Sibel Edmonds have waged a war to silence her, using the full power of the Executive Branch to do so, making her the most "classified woman" in American history. This campaign started shortly after 9/11 and is waged to this day as the FBI tries to suppress the publication of this very book, which tells us how important this book must be."

The least populous 21 Republican states can block any legislation, yet they represent only 16% of our population. We cannot afford this dysfunction at a time of rapid global change. Republican states representing only 33% can pass or defeat any bill.
We need to change the filibuster rule so that it takes the vote of Senators representing 50% of the population to block. Will the Republican 33% allow that to happen?
