  • Will "The Buffett Rule" be passed in the Senate today?   13 years 14 weeks ago

It is time or past time we had this rule, but it will never pass as long as congress is bought and paid for by the ultra rich. The "right" say it will kill jobs and do nothing for the nation, but they are wrong. Just think about it. It WOULD help to create jobs. If the rich know they will get taxes at a higher rate if they make over a set limit, then why not invest that money in creating jobs to lower their tax rate? But I guess this line of thinking and reason is far beyond the limited minded "right". They don't want people who think, they just want to control the dumb masses.

  • The Buffett rule will get a vote in the Senate today...   13 years 14 weeks ago

Three quarters of all Americans polled support the "Buffett Rule." Among Democrats this jumps to 90% in favor. Of course the tea party was not in majority favor, yet this little group of anti-democracy, Koched out numbnuts, once again got their way with Senate Republican 1%ers voting against the best interests of the 99.9%.

You bunch of damn fool tea baggers running around pretending to understand something about the founding of this great country, well guess what, if it was 1776 your republican senators just voted for the best interests of George III, King Koch. For god sake, pull your heads out of Fox's ass and wake up. The rest of us need to RESIST this tyranny with whatever means possible. Where the hell is Sam Adams when you need him?. OCCUPY!

Fox says that Mitt only lies 92% of the time to women!

    Thom,

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, give us or post a list of the expenditures you spoke of today. This list of the expenditures of the military, subsidies, "Free Trade" etc. is a Great List to have handy when wanting to counter the Tea Party's concern about mis-spending, or the Republican's claim of excess spending on Social Security, Medicare, or Health Care Reform. Your list of spending, which is substantialy higher than any other single national expenditure as a budget item, is an extremely beneficial summary for "Progressives" to argue against. So please post the list of items you mentioned in your TV show today. Thank You!

So Real World, do you home school your kids? You're for liberty, but think schools are indoctrination. TN is now going to teach creationism along with evolution, but that's not brain washing. I think Kirk Cameron approved the text books.

That Buffett rule is just a PR stunt in the same way as the "benevolent billionaires" giving money to charity. It doesn't mean anything other than having some folks think about those crooks in a different light than what their true nature is. The real discussion should be on getting all those criminals to face justice, perhaps in a court of law if you can find one that they don't own. A good place to start would be in rounding up all the financiers and generals who were responsible for the destruction of Iraq, and that would include everyone who was in a command or supporting role, even going back to the first "war" and getting all of that scum like Madeline Albright who claimed that killing 500,000 children was worth it to send a message to Saddam. When you start hanging those billionaires, instead of treating those worthless wretches as special, then the wars will come to a halt of a sudden and international law can begin to be applied universally.

  • The Buffett rule will get a vote in the Senate today...   13 years 14 weeks ago

No, the Buffet rule won't pass. Mainly because Harry Reid did not change the rules of the Senate in 2010 to force them to actually filibuster, and not leave - peeing in a can if they need to. He knew they would block everything, so he's partially responsible for all their "easy" filibusters ever since - FIRE HIM! (And car thief Darrel Issa!).

Have to disagree with Thom on his point that the rich took advantage of the Bush tax cuts. The rich actually purchased these cuts. They are just a return on their money.

Why have so many people forgotten that "youth" is a count noun when talking about individuals? Children are youths, not youth. A good example (for word formation, but not pronunciation) is that scene from My Cousin Vinnie. Vinnie: "Two yoots." / Judge: "What is a yoot?"

Dextrosinistrously ugly. For once, I don't have to look anything up, although "right-left" ugly seems meaningless. Perhaps it refers to interpartisan bickering.

  • Will "The Buffett Rule" be passed in the Senate today?   13 years 14 weeks ago

"The Buffett Rule" will not be passed, but it should. Unfortunintly WE have a shame in the Congress, and WE pay the fees. I know of none in the Republican Party that isn't in middle of the corporate mix, and very few Democrats that aren't beholding to the corportations. The People of these United States are nothing more than play-things for the emusement of the rich. But the sad part is, the majority of the People believe this is the way it is, and will continue to be. Hey! Only if YOU continue to think like that, and do not get involved in changing that mind set.

  • Will "The Buffett Rule" be passed in the Senate today?   13 years 14 weeks ago

No, I don't think it will, simply because the House is paid for by the wealthy Corporations with the GOP implementing the process, and the Senate with a filibuster. We need to change our reps and senators to dems who listen!

  • Will "The Buffett Rule" be passed in the Senate today?   13 years 14 weeks ago

They may not jump for it now, but watch them squirm when the Bush tax cuts for the weathy expire. Karma!

Oh please oh please, continue with your "Some people say...." reports Thom. Please don't take the high road and tell listeners its just somethings you're making up at the end of the segment. Start every show with a few "Some people say...." issues, and let the chips fall where they may.

If for no other reason then to hear you're right wing guests tell you off for doing so, and hemming and hawing when you point out that its a well known Fox technique (or just ignore it and try to continue condemning you seriously).

congress is bought and sold. it doesn't matter what side of the aisle they claim to be on, they won't rock the money boat. there are very few, a handful, that are not beholden to their corporate overlords. unfortunately, thatks not nearly enough to challange the ridiculous system of filibuster

  • The Buffett rule will get a vote in the Senate today...   13 years 14 weeks ago

People making more than 6 figures per year paying their fair share of taxes?? It'll happen along about the same time (you know where) freezes over!!!

Of course, with global climate change...I guess anything is possible!!

  • What are the Rules of Engagement on the streets of America?   13 years 14 weeks ago

Yeah we should just let the raping, street corner defecating, dirty, vandalizing, tent living, drug using, entitlement mentality, occupy wall street scum, who left piles of garbage in the streets run this country. That's much better than letting those middle aged hard working business people, tea-baggers, (who by the way pay for everything in this country, you probably didn't know that), who left every rally they had cleaner than when they got there, who just want to get back to the document that made this the greatest country in the world, run things. By the way when Europe goes down, Germany will follow. And I take all people with your dangerous mindset seriously.

  • The banksters are at it again – screwing over the poor   13 years 14 weeks ago

Your free to be whatever you want, we don't care. Thats what you liberals don't get. We just want to run our businesses and raise our families without progressive government intervention. It's funny but in the real world, the one in which you don't reside, liberals want to control others more than consrvatives. It comes down to people like you who think they are so much smarter than everyone else that you need to tell them how to live their lives. Hence the "even rednecks with the lowest education", comment. The government needs to get out of public education because the their "lowest education" is not education, it's indoctrination. So your for LIBERTY as long as other people live the way you deem necessary.

  • The increase of autism in the US is linked to high-fructose corn syrup   13 years 15 weeks ago

The new field of epigenetics shows that it is the factors that turn genes on and off that is responsible for the autism epidemic. NIH now funds the Epigenome Project. Folks need to educate themselves and come out of the cave. Someone spouting off a statement like "everyone knows autism is caused by genes" is misinformed. While children with the most severe form of autism known as Rett's Syndrome, is caused by a single gene, most other cases of autism are associated with specific factors that turn genes on and off. The new study that ties consumption of high fructose corn syrup with the autism epidemic in the U.S. is on target. You may access the results of this study at no charge at the following link. It is easy to read http://www.clinicalepigeneticsjournal.com/content/4/1/6/abstract

  • Giant Transnational Corporate Tax Dodgers are eating our towns   13 years 15 weeks ago

So what is wrong with the Dollar Store? They are not exactly Walmart...and you can buy a loaf of bread as well as everything else for...a dollar.

The problem with a lot of small-scale "merchants" is that many all vote Republican and believe that Democrats are leaches who don't want to pay anything but expect everything in return while the merchant "slaves" away and "earns" everything they "work" for..no matter how many people they cheat and steal from along the way.

They expect nice big houses, yearly vacations, medical insurance, and nice cars and nice everything else and if they don't get it...they rag on the competition and on the customers who patronize those businesses who can provide the same products at cheaper prices. And on top of that, they all believe that they should pay lower taxes than those who make less than they do....and find and use loopholes and hide their money that lets them do just that....push the tax burden down the food chain. That's the real "trickle down"....it's really "trickle down taxes" where the tax burden is push down to those who can least afford to pay them.

When you don't have a lot of money you have to buy the cheapest. If you have a lot of money, you can afford to be picky and avoid paying the cheaper prices...in order to make a political statement against corporatism, or be patriotic, I suppose.

So, those small-scale merchants, in useful-idiot lock-step with the ruling elite who voted Republican, or Blue-Dog Democrat, can now reap what they sowed....a monopolistic, too-big-to-fail, economy whose major customer base can no longer afford to pay the prices of those small-scale merchants who still expect to live in big, expensive, houses and drive nice expensive cars.

I, for one, have given up on the hope that America will survive it's own stupidity and idiocy and expect it to become just another third-world country. "Hope" is for dummies and suckers!

I expect most of us will be forced to learn Chinese in order to keep from starving to death in the future. And what the heck does it really matter if we are controlled and ruled by the Chinese ruling elite or our own ruling elite. We are obviously not going to get one crumb more from our own ruling elite anyway...especially since the ruling elite is profiting from having those crumbs manufactured in Asia. And they do not care a whit about us either.

So, to hell with patriotism, and silly-assed flags, because it is all stupid bullshit to play the world's populations off against each other until we all kill one another in order to satiate the meglomaniacal whims of those who managed to steal their way to the top. We've all been had! The only way to change things around is to stop playing their games. Stop joining the military under the guise of fighting for your country...that's total crap! Most people know it by now.

Nobody will boycott the places that have the lowest prices because they are stuck. But, all those right-wing merchants need to wake up and change their ideology in favor of more progressive and liberal views and massively vote for and change the system so that we all can afford to pay their higher prices.

Henry Ford had the right idea but lots of businesses and merchants have lost touch with that idea. For the last 30, or so years, they have done nothing but screw their workers by reduced wages, reduced benefits, and even giving their jobs to low paid workers overseas. And this has not been just a higher corporate practice...the "screw-the-worker" mentality has trickled down to the lowly merchants as well.

So, keep buying at WalMart or the Dollar Stores or any way you can to avoid paying more than you have to...THEY ALL DO..(pay the cheapest they can get away with...wages...interest...etc)...so why shouldn't we?

  • Will we ever see a revitalization of unique, local, small businesses in towns & communities across America?   13 years 15 weeks ago

I voted "yes," though I hasten to add, simply because it may be obvious that there exists an imperative for change does not inevitably create conditions and actions that effect change. Only by taking personal responsibility will we alter the existing paradigm to one more agreeable to those of us less empowered by our relative lack of wealth. Without the dedication and motivation to take persuasive action in concert with others, even while suffering personal discomfort and inconvenience, nothing will change and corporations will continue to dominate the economy and our lives.

  • Giant Transnational Corporate Tax Dodgers are eating our towns   13 years 15 weeks ago

The only way change will come is when members of a community are willing to pay $2.00 for a loaf of locally baked bread made in a local bakery owned by local people, rather than $1.00 for a loaf of bread made by some other. This will only happen after people decide that it is better to spend the cable bill money on such things rather than tune into coporate adverising. Spread the word -- education is the only answer.

  • Giant Transnational Corporate Tax Dodgers are eating our towns   13 years 15 weeks ago

Small businesses are at a disadvantage with respect to percentage income tax paid, per capita health care cost, shipping costs for FEDEX and UPS while they are much more likely to need to charge sales tax.

Teddy Roosevelt must be turning over in his grave. Can we continue to suppress the golden goose that creates jobs?
