  • Republican trickle-down austerity is crippling public sector employees. Is this an attempt to crush what's left of our unions?   13 years 16 weeks ago

It's not just union busting they're doing. A few years ago my uncle, who had worked his whole life for good ol' Standard/Chevron oil, had his pension just taken away. They decided to just change the rules to suit their need for greed. Sadly, they really are completely out of touch with the common man and out of touch with their responsibility to humanity. How many thousands, hundreds of thousands, have paid a price for their greed and need for power. How many lives are lost, or put at risk for oil; how many family farms lost to corporate agri-business; how many homes lost to preditory banking practices? We keep repeating the same mistakes of history. It's time, this time, to perhaps do some major trust-busting on too big to fail, and make wall street rules stiffer, tougher and unchangeable. One thing we can do is get behind, support progressive congressional candidates and throw out the gridlock party. Another might be to send an onslot of posts to the Obama/whitehouse web to let the Bush tax cuts expire. Don't even give the republicans an inch on that 1. Keep up the good work - pushing back against money driven advertising and propaganda.

Nationwide Community Colleges have waiting lists to get onto a waiting list to get into a training program while the wealthy are getting tax cuts.

It is tiring fighting for your sanity against the constant bombardment of propaganda. It would be easier to zone out and take the blue pill. But we took the red pile and see reality for what it is. Keep the faith that the long arc of history bends towards justice! Take part in bending that arc. I also suggest listening to "Tire Me" from Rage Against the Machine. It’s uplifting when you get tired of all the BS.

I was fortunate to earn and receive my B.S. Degree from the Detroit College of Business in 1971 through the G.I. Bill of Rights. I served in the U.S. Army Security Agency in the mid 1960’s and subsequently attended college to further my education. I could not have afforded my college education alone without the benefit of the United States Government. We need to support our American youth to receive free education like the rest of the world's democracies. An educated American work force is the key to the growth with prosperity, and security of our United States of America.

  • Is the boycott of all companies that give money to ALEC working?   13 years 16 weeks ago

I do hope that we have more to our defense against the predator class than say..the Monarch Butterflies...that most predators know how badly they taste...very bitter, I'm told..that they avoid eating them. Could be that the predator class may have created something that may very well blow back on them. Violence is increasing....and no police to deal with it in many cities. Oakland had so many 911 calls in the last couple of days that they couldn't respond to many of them. The police wanted victims to just file an on-line report. I think I'll hang on to my peace of mind that speaks louder than words for a little while longer. We cannot rely on the police to protect us. And that may very well be "in bad taste" but it works for the Monarch Butterflies. Where's my hoodie!

An American news reporter arrogantly asked a N. Korean authority "Is launching a rocket more important than food?" I thought, what damn hypocrites to pose such a question...it may well be true...but it is many times truer of American authorities who squander much more on their war crimes against innocent people while their own population goes without healthcare. What bloody hypocrites!!! Main stream news media is so ridiculous...but I guess many American Zombies nod their heads in agreement with the arrogant twerps holding the microphones.

In comment #9, I had forgotten what Nullification was, and I caught half the conversation, so I got a little mixed up. I was just talking about the federal courts' power to strike down laws, not the states' (unestablished) power to do so.

I am SO tired of living in fear of what these modern day Republican reactionaires are doing and what they are capable of doing. I am just sick of it....I know despair is not an option....but man it's tough sometimes just not giving up hope...it really is

I need to express my amazement once again that Christians celebrate Easter so much more than Good Friday. After all, Good Friday is when Jesus did his job of dying for others' salvation. Easter is when he reneged on the deal by ceasing to be dead after a mere 36 hours.

It's as if Christians care less about Jesus' message and purpose than their claim that he's divine.

I agree with you about unions..and what they gain helps not only union members but trickles over to all workers...

I am very sad about the attack on public education...

As someone who works in this field, the cuts have been difficult to manage, forcing many programs to serve less and cut staff. The Workforce Investment Act hasn't been reauthorized since 2003 - so helping job seekers and employers doesn't seem to be a priority to Congress, even during these hard economic times. Next time you have Senator Sanders on your show, would love to have you bring up what the Senate is doing to stop the Republican dismantling of the federal workforce system. By the way, more money goes back into the economy, when people who use the system, return to work than what we spend - in my area its about $3.50 to one. Please keep this system on your radar and for success stories visit the National Association of Workforce Board website. Thank you

    Hey Thom,

Got a great idea - Give EVERY American Citizen $2,000,000.00 tax free if they have AGI of less than $750,000.00. That is less than $600,000,000.00. Take 1,000,000.00 of the 2 mill and put it in trust for all citizens under 22 years old or let them apply it to college. What the heck, we spend trillions on the poor and disenfranchised....give them all the money, then all are part of the 1%. By the way, washington elected officials get nothing....Talk about spuring an economy!!!!

Eliminating money for job training is consistent with Republican ideology: We should HOME SCHOOL for the new jobs!

    See, problem solved.

If every American youth graduated high school and then joined the military to pay for higher education (as it seems some suggest) could the government pay for all of those troops let alone their higher education desires? It seems to me that it would be very expensive to begin to enroll every 18 year old into the military since the military would be obligated to pay for housing and food.

No country for authors? For the homeless words are all we have left. To write is to be. Despair is not an option. Your postive affirmations are worth the walk from our homeless camps to the coffee shop to plug in. We walk the woods and stay awake at night. The starry skies and animal eyes singe your mind. Just have to keep walking. Be a hunter or be hunted. You need skills to melt into the trees or be tazed and your tent and sleeping bag taken away. Fear is not an option. What's the worry? We have friends like Tom and Bernie!

We are getting real good in joining in boycotts. Newman's Own products are much better then Kraft. Focus on what you do consume. Buy locally. Think organic. Make water a human right owned by the state and not private owners. Bring democracy back to our country. End the rule by the ruling upper class power elite. We want a 4 day work week and an alternate 3 day shift with a liveable wage. We want affordable housing for all. There is no liberty without life. You cannot have life without healthcare. Healthcare is a basic human right. The job our forefathers began is not done. We must continue the work.

Job training is important, but expanding the job pools is imperative. A jobless recovery isn't a recovery, its a bubble waiting to burst.

    Freelyb, welcome from another Coloradan.

To find books on the "interplay of quantum dynamics and human thought/potential", I'll give you a hint. They won't be in the science section of the bookstore. You'll want to look for New Age in the religion section. Even though quantum mechanics obviously has something to do with the chemical reactions in the brain, that also applies to all matter, and so far nothing scientific has found an indication that human thought is special in QM terms. Sentience is so far an inexplicable emergent property.

  • The Unemployment rate is 8.2%, the lowest level in over 3 years. Do you think the economy is turning around?   13 years 16 weeks ago

These are difficult times.........this goes without saying; however we have the right man in the President's office. He needs more support from Congress and the best way to accomplish this is at the polls in November!!!!!!! If there are folks who think the Republican party is the answer, one better think again!!!!! The later wants to mess up social security, medi-care, oil subsidies, issues with woman, degrading the middle class, tax breaks for the wealthy, large corporations!!!!!! The list seems to have no end!!!!! People, please educate yourself as to what are the best alterantives for our nation. I would also strongly suggest we "pray for the President!" Allow me to share something I carry with me in my car: "God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can and the Wisdom to know the difference!!"

  • The Unemployment rate is 8.2%, the lowest level in over 3 years. Do you think the economy is turning around?   13 years 16 weeks ago

Remember when Bush said, "that the economy was fundamentally strong"? That was nonsense then and it is still untrue. With our unsound tax and trade policies there will not be a real recovery for the middle class. 25% of the economy is the financial services sector. What do they create other than debt? We haven't replaced the good jobs from the 50,000 closed U.S. factories. The standard of living has been decimated for millions and only the wealthiest are prospering. This process has been coming for 30 years and is only getting worse. The tax code allows the wealthiest corporations to not only pay no tax but loot the treasury with their corporate welfare. Until our government is taken back by the people from the corporations, America's future is not bright.

  • The banksters and technocrats, pushing austerity in Greece, now have blood on their hands   13 years 16 weeks ago

Back to the title of the piece...banksters and technocrats...This evil is beyond the blue or red. They OWN the blue AND the red. They do what they always do. And they will do it to the US if we dont recognize this evil, and stop being divided and pointing fingers and cheering on "our" side of the professional wrestling match. JFK and Lincoln would both agree that we are wasting time arguing with one another. These two tried to truely do what was best for the people. If we join to fight a mutual enemy, THE mutual enemy...the Federal Reserve, we can resume discussions of philosophy afterwards. I do not think you can even have a philosophical discussion about politics, systems of governance when our system is so corrupt. Its a looting of the people. I've spent days at OWS and Tea party rallies as well. I'm for THE PEOPLE. And when EITHER get marginalized by Washington or the media as being {insert grossly negligent generalization description here} with propoganda, im there to try to defend. Im no fan of progressivism, not here, not now, no way. If you had a few more Kucinich's...maybe it would be worth at least a little discussion. But they wanted his ass out. Sad. I just want to say...dont always look for a solution within the party. By even declaring that you subscribe to a party gives them power over you, your mind, what you "should" be thinking. Dont buy into it.

  • Is the boycott of all companies that give money to ALEC working?   13 years 16 weeks ago

It is so easy to boycott and not support these company,s ,just by buying natural ,organic life sustaining products that are earth kind would do ,and buy them from small new start up company's ,its better for your health ,better for the planet and makes a huge difference for local decentralized communities.

We do not have to be dependent on manufacturers, corporations, energy suppliers, politicians, they just keep us in bondage in this consumer culture. In fact the Achilles heal of humanity is dependency.

Lets get back to localized economies ,we can be self sufficient and no longer dependent on our basic needs from distant sources, this in turn would produce greater freedom and a higher quality of life.

This is called taking responsibility for our collective future and not intrusting this to corporations that do not care about the PRIME VALUE OF LIFE., and that,s why you have not got an economy that,s based on nature and is in harmony with the natural world if it was most products would be made from the planets no 1 plant HEMP ,anything that you can make from ANCIENT SUNLIGHT(OIL)you can make from hemp and is sustainable.

Raising the collective consciousness of the planet is the only way to change consciousness of the planet, what do you think Thom is doing-its not just for himself its for all of us ,i am so in awe of his efforts and his determination to raise awareness of whats really going on .

    Tag we are it !!!!
