Invest in Infrastructure. It's a simple cure to what ails us and a kick start that has worked over and over. Freeways, Bridges, Rail Systems, Ports, National Parks, Airports and other public works (solar and wind programs) would do amazing things to curb future costs of a failing infrastructure. It would put people to work, ignite private production and allow us all to be proud again of our American industriousness and ingenuity.
This is what happens when the Democratic party in controll lets an extremely small minority like the Tea Party freshmen take the reins and dictate policy. Sadly to say I think our President, who we put so much faith in bringing about the "Change" we so desperatly needed has turned out to be the Neville Chamberlin of the movement. A capitulator in Chief. He still hasen't learned the the GOP plays dirty, and does not give a rats pituey about the people, it is only Corporate power and profits for them.

You are right, it IS a no-brainer, and I am certain we will eventually get around to doing what needs to be done. I remember in the not too distant past, this being part of Obama's stimulus plan.
I came across a recent interview with candidate Gary Johnson. He said he would not vote for raising the debt ceiling because "We haven't had the fire sale yet." He actually said this. No mistake, there is an all-or-nothing effort to take this country into default and worse. The vultures must be Fed (pun intended).

It's clear that the Repub aim is to block Obama in every way and convince the people that his administration is a failure. At the same time Obama seems to be answering to secret masters in making decisions that are shockingly opposite to what he told us he would try to do.
It appears he's being told how he will handle Bush's war, and is obliging whoever is telling him what to do. And at the same time, he's being blocked to a drastic degree in domestic matters. This makes me wonder if war for oil and starve the beast domestic intransigence are coordinated. If, as there is good reason to believe, explosives were used to destroy WCT 1,2, and 7---IF they did that, then they would certainly do this in conjunction.
It seems we're in a cold civil war in this country. What are Obama's options and limitations? His decisions appear to reflect deference to people in our government who can tell him what to do.
People in my hometown of Vancouver, BC would shudder at the idea of "LA-style freeways". One day a retired LA freeway engineer (now living in BC) offered his view. The freeways (he wrote) are the life blood of southern Calif. Transit moves people but it does little, if anything, for goods and freight! When the freeways are clogged at the worst of times, this usually leaves the surface streets almost empty. He said he could drive his granddaughter to school on surface streets not worrying about the traffic, even at the height of rush hour. So, yes, freeways and transit are the lifeblood of our cities and our nation!

I just mentioned Mr. Eisenhower to one of my rebumblican associates. Their rebute? "Oh, thats bull." I beleive we are at the precipice of sheer ignorance in our culture and tragically it might just have something to do with our system of education or lack of quality therein. I'm just sayin' yaknow!hey by the way while most things about world war 2 sucked didn't the audobon come out of it I know at one point in time its cited that it put some 100,000 otherwise destitue 99'ers back to work. heck if i could get a job running a loader i'd be there in a hot second!
Here's a possible scenario for this faux debt crisis. There are several possible scenarios, but nothing changes that fact that this entire debate in our government is a farce - everyone knows it, but not everyone will admit it.
Suppose Obama does apply the 14th Amendment to the US debt debate. It seems like a reasonable response considering the wording of this amendment. The Republicans will then likely file a suite against Obama claiming that he has violated the Constitution by circumventing the House of Representatives which has control over the purse strings. However, I can guarantee that the current US Supreme court will rule in favor of Obama. What this will do is take power away from the US congress and give it to the President. So, the most representative body of our government, the House or Representatives, will lose it's primary source of power and the Imperial Presidency will put one more nail in the coffin of our democracy.
Obama will come away a hero to the left for saving medicare and social security and to progressives, as well as to the right, for saving our credit rating and our economy, and he will also have appeased deficit hawks because he has offered more conservative spending plans than any Republican to date. What will appear as a win for democrats will truly be a loss for the people all because of the insanity of the Tea Party.
This all seems to good to be true. We'll soon see.

It goes without saying that none of the gruesome, disordered events decribed in Exodus ever took place. All religion is a belief in a belief that has no actual fact or evidence to back it up. All religions are man made. Ethics and morality are quite independant of religion and are not derived from it. Religion, because of its special devine exemption is both amoral and immoral. Supernatural beings that are the basis for religion should not be tolerated in any school curriculum unless they're taught as purely mythological. I believe that any man should be free to worship any faith he chooses unless it harms children or other men who believe differently.. There were hundreds of gods that men believed in before the gods that are more familiar today.

Thom, have you noticed how similar the debate over whether or not disaster will strike if we don't raise the Debt Ceiling sounds like the "debate" over Global Warming?
In both cases, the opponents are STRIKINGLY ill-informed, basing their oppinions upon false information, made up "facts", supposed "common knowledge", and outright nonsense based on nothing more than their "gut feeling"?
In both cases, this ignorant minority's stubborn adherence to their ideology is jeopardizing the safety & security of the rest of the world.
As a recovered GOP voter. I find GOP / Baggers to be devious liars who suck up to corps -billionaires, and kiss Rush's & Grover's Ring aka A$$ day after day. Its Sickening . re: 2950 10K Soup lines...........sorry, but the teabaggers (maybe not sharp enough to figure it out) will be thinking that the soup line they're standing in is a social welfare handout (whether public or privately cooked), and they'll be bitchin' that the soup needs salt or the bread is stale, and it's all the progressive's fault.
There is so much power in someone like the Limbaughs being paid to "spellbind", and they are very, very good at it, and make huge money doing it. We may see right thru it, but the sheeple, well......
The saddest thing is: I'll be in the soupline with those folks, listening to their same drivel, and being scared to speak up, because they may stone me to death.
