I think Thom spent the first hour apologizing for Obama. He should be outraged instead!

What about the 2% payroll tax decease? The first attack on Social Security funding by the Republican Conservatives!! (PSY-'CHOP-ATY = the control of all institutions by psychopaths, whether CEOs, the Secretary of the Navy (formerly Cheney; involved in psycho-sadistic marine mammal bursting of eyes, bursting of ears, bursting of lungs by utilization of sonar), or dictators of countries.
The Left is NOT irrational. PSYCHOPATHS are irrational. Earth-destroying Capitalists are irrational.
Mr. Hartmann repeated himself, somewhat like a windbag today. And Thom never criticizes Israel, or displays empathy for the Palestinians, I think --- but I am not positive.
IDEA: Obama gets on his bully pulpit, and demonstrates some principled backbone for once.
HE DRAWS A LINE IN THE SAND, AS SENATOR BERNIE SANDERS SAID HE WOULD DO ON THOM'S SHOW!
Let the Bush tax cuts expire.
Let the Republicans shut down the governemnt, as they did during the Clinton administration.
They then have to change and give in, as they did then, and will be excoriated.
Then make the Unemployment Insurance extension retroactive.

Thom is just too confident and STUBBORN about his views today, and lacks principled backbone.

As much as I hate the idea of fear-mongering in Wal-Mart, we probably shouldn't make such a big deal out of it because after about two weeks everyone will ignore the video anyway. If they really wanted people ot pay attention, they need to use Lady Ga-Ga or Paris Hilton--not Janet Napolitano.
In Ohio, we have one of each senator. The retiring Republican has confirmed he will not vote for the bill. Interesting how Republicans develop a conscience on the way out the door.

The President’s “Compromise” with the Republicans is unsound.
Do not negotiate with economic terrorists. Please work fervently to squelch this exercise in extremely poor judgment. The long-term will exponentially out weigh any short-term benefit. The Republicans made it perfectly clear that they were happy to deny >>> 100% <<< of Americans any tax relief in their mindless pursuit of America’s economic ruin. It would be better to let all deficit enhancing ‘tax-cuts’ expire and excoriate the Republicans for destroying the unemployed during the holiday season.
I implore you to use any and all means at your disposal to keep this travesty from occurring.

re: Walmart and Homeland Security: If you remember, just recently Homeland Security intervened on behalf of unnamed corporations by shutting down websites which either released copyrighted material or had links to other sites which performed that activity. Now we see a link of tax-supported Homeland Security to Walmart. Does anyone seriously believe that the public is being told to report "suspicious" i.e. terroristic activities - or is this an admonition to report shoplifters??? Walmart has mewled like a mashed cat for years about its losses to theft. My thinking is that we are funding yet another benefit for this giant corporation...I seriously doubt that "terrorists" are going into Walmart to do their Christmas shopping and then go out and commit terrorist acts.

Yes, I'll feel much happier knowing that the every want to be patriot hero who is an ignorant, paranoid, secret vigilante citizen is watching out for (if not just watching) me.
Perhaps, just perhaps we should remove the boot heel of our country from other country's necks, that might be a bit more of a wise tact to take then trying to enlist every citizen to anonymously finger fellow citizens as being suspicious.

Yesterday, I called every Democrat who voted for extending the Bush tax cuts as weel as the White house and Lieberman. I, also, called Nancy Pelosi's office to thank her for working for the people.
At this point, I don't know if it makes sense to vote. If the voting softwear is not fixed to favor Republicans, many Democrats and the President vote like Republicans. What's the difference? Maybe the people of this country need to experience the total control of the conservatives and their corporate buddies. I say let 'em have their way. Only problem is, we all have to suffer for their inability to form thoughts without the influence of Faux News and all those corporate tv ads.
I agree. The magnitude of Obama's passive aggressive betrayal is the elephant in the room. I think the left can usefully confront Obama, can call him out, call him to account. This should have been done long ago, during the Health Care sellout for instance. And Afghanistan. And all the rest.
Thom - you keep mentioning Roosevelt and Eisenhower . . . . Does anyone remember that today is Pearl Harbor Day? Will 911 also be relegated to ho-hum status in 60 years?
Thom, I think your statement that Obama hasn't had a bad guy to deal with yet acts more to condemn his lack of leadership--his passive aggressive, ambivalent behavior that has unraveled almost all progressive hopes. It would be one thing for him to have done combat with an evil demon and lost; but not to have had an antagonist as a foil simply means that he is all the more to blame.
I appreciate your kindness in looking past his accumulated failures (maybe next year w Boehner's help he will be strong!), but this line of argument is distractive and off the mark.

I remember when they pinched Noriega how odd it seemed to be going into another country and arresting their leader (Dictator notwithstanding). The jokes of 'Spam in a Can' made the rounds, but it was the strange charge of supposedly finding Kiddie Porn in the basement of one of his homes that put the fingerprints of a certain Government agency on the situation.
As far as the Tax debate... once the deal is struck.. the Clock starts. The R's have killed their deficit arguments with this tax giveaway, but have hung their fortunes on 'Job Creating'.
Now the public will have a target.

What about the captial gains tax increase, the payroll tax holiday; and health care incentive taxe break. The reality is politics suck and people get squashed in the "sausage making". Obama has gotten some concessions. During the midterm elections people didnt go out and vote for the politicians that would maintain the gains or further the gains of pregressive ideas. You bitch all you want about how money influences elections but it is the people who vote.
As one of the 99ers and middle class I was willing to lose out on benefits in order to get our country back on track. As usual the President has caved in to the GOP. He no longer has my support or my vote in 2012

it is very difficult to not just throw up hands and disengage from normal political discourse of calling, rallies, debate amongst friends and go start some radical stuff. however, i know that the anger and disillusionment needs to be channeled productively. so redoubling our efforts to fight the "corporateocracy" and misguided efforts of the religious right to accelerate their version of what the end times are going to be is a must.
i appreciate all of you that really care about people, this country, and actually those in other parts of the world. justice will prevail at some point...
I don't understand why we don't hold those 2% wealthy Americans to the fire, we could give them the tax break individually IF they produce jobs. Isn't that the dogmatic rant of the Republicans that without the tax break they can't produce jobs?. For the last 8 years they have had the tax breaks and they haven't produced any jobs so why would we suppose it would suddenly work now? Sure the GOP says employers are on the fence to see if taxes will go up, before they start expansion and job creation. If we give them the two year extention they will still use that bogus excuse again. Here's a solution: let them "earn" the right to the tax extension. Give them the tax break during the first "trial" year, during that time they have to create enough jobs to form new taxpayers to cover their tax reductions. If they create the jobs, the tax break will be extended for another year, if the jobs don't materialize, then we revert back to the older tax rates..Fair Enough? From this point on every idea must have a built in "measuring stick" that holds them responsible and creates a motivating factor. The idea that the richest 2% can't understand the economic dire straits of the American people and help out is absolutely selfish beyond understanding. When will American people become outraged enough to take to the streets and voice an opinion? Mexican illegals have more backbone than Americans who will suffer inordinately before they voice an opinion.
The emperor has no clothes. People should have seen that it is the Republicans who were holding the middle class hostage--not the Democrats. I really don't understand what has happened to President Obama. The people who voted for the Republicans during the mid-terms will NEVER under any circumstances vote for President Obama. Those people will always vote against their best interest. In order to get their respect and to get more done he should have held out. Tax cuts for the rich means a higher deficit for the nation, decreased funds for public education, police and fire protection services, public health, Medicare. It will take a miracle now. The Republicans will NEVER have any respect for him. This isn't what I voted for.

Meanwhile, the long term answer to building a world with more AUTHENTIC Freedom, Fairness, and an ecologically sustainable Future...is to adopt Earthnomics...or Earthrights Democracy. Such a system would gradually remove all taxes (yes, even on the rich) and place user fees on the Consumption of the Earth...including mineral extraction, destruction of mountains, carbon pollution, and -- most significantly - the monopoly of space. The revenues raised would be used to pay for essential community services, wildlife habitat protection, and a safety-net dividend to everyone. Most poor and middle class would come out ahead financially. But, most importantly, we will be saving our planet for our grand children.
