You can carry a concealed weapon without bothering to obtain a permit, and you can do this in restaurants (not sure about bars) in Arizona. What do you say to people who say that "law abiding citizens" deserve to have their 2nd amendment rights upheld (and I love that history that Thom gave of the 2nd amendment)? And why doesn't anyone mention the history of the 2nd amendment besides the clause "the right to bear arms"? Shouldn't those constitutional "originalists" get on the bandwagon?

@Quark: you said "Let's run that up the pole". Hey! No Polish jokes!

re: guitar guy. Well, if there was no case, his stash was in his guitar, somebody stole it and he got it back. Yes, with the shotgun.

    Robert S.,

Re: One of the frustrating things about Thom's show...

I agree. I get frustrated with Thom's "tutorial" conversations with right wingers. I lose hope when I hear their idiotic and prefabricated responses. I would rather hear more progressives and use the listening community meetings as rallying forums (or "fora.") I would find it more useful as an activist jumping-off point.

Why would we have to boycott Coldstone? My little boy loves the cotton candy with gummy bears combo. And if I must boycott, does it count if I boycott myself but my son and husband still partake?

A@Robert S.: I have been reamed by the Blog Gods for passionately expressing my feelings about the trash that spews forth from the radio when Dan Gainor is pontificating and confusing the human-sounds with the individual generating them. I have to concur with the Blog Gods. Just because Mr. Gainor continuously prattles vile tripe, it does not mean that he himself is vile or trash . . . It means that the sounds I hear makes my soul curdle.

Perhaps I am overly sensitive to what I perceive to be insane, overtly and intentional sociopath ranting . . . Just because I perceive it to be so, does not mean that the individual espousing at I perceive to be insane, overtly and intentional sociopath ranting IS actually insane or sociopathic . . . It is after all Mr. Gainor’s employment to generate this jabberwocky.

Let us face it. If we do not prosecute those who lead us into war on fabrications, if we do not prosecute those who facilitate and commit torture, if we continue to turn our heads and pretend that US foreign policy does not directly lead to acts of terror against us and massive displacement of populations, we are continuing to lead to our own destruction. The Az law, flawed and racist as it is, is only a symptom. US hegemony, and exceptionalism must be repudiated before we find can any solutions.

Our children are being taught, through history, through current militarism, through video games and media entertainment, that violence is the answer. Our budget reveals our priorities. We cannot claim to seek peace when we insist on military superiorty. When we say "everything is on the table," we are threatening a possible nuclear response. The world knows this. How is it we do not?

    Harry,

Maybe, but why the gun? (Or do you think that's how he got his possessions back?)

  • Daily Topics - Wednesday - April 28th 2010   15 years 3 weeks ago

OK OK, I'm not for this carrying guns into bars law, however, this may just be Darwins' theory playing itself out. I can see it now, 12 people killed in gun shootings at Al's bar and grill last night, thus bringing the local Tea party number down to 5 members after taking into account the last eight meetings they had at various bars in town in which even greater numbers were gunned down. I'm just saying, perhaps this is evidence of God, and he's playing his hand now.

    Harry Ashburn,

Re: was the guitar in a case?

No, it was strapped on, loose.

  • Daily Topics - Wednesday - April 28th 2010   15 years 3 weeks ago

@Quark: if there was no guitar case, obviously somebody had stolen his guitar, and he just got it back. If there was a case, obviously somebody had stolen his stash and he just got it back.

I didn't think to ask her. We were just trying to get more info. about him before we did anything.

    re Dan Gainor

Quark is right, Thom and Gainor are friends. Thom has defended Gainor by saying that some "conservatives" who make guest appearances on radio and TV shows are just espousing (that's spousing en Espanol) those views for the money, but Gainor is a great guy because he actually believes the anti-human, anti-environment immoral positions he spouses (Oh Thommy, you got some splainin" to do!)

Thom finds him and his conservative ilk usefull so he can model for us how to conduct civil conversations with conservatives. He thinks he's helping us win the water cooler wars, even though the water coolers have been relocated to China, India and the Philippines and Thom's conservative fencing buddies never change their opinions through their civil conversations.

    Doh!

Would someone point out to that caller who didn't mind people in bars with guns, that not every "law abiding citizen" can shoot straight. Why do you think Andy only gave Barney one bullet? It wasn't due to Mayberry budget cuts. :) Not every law abiding citizen can stay calm in a panic situation (which is why you have to get training and a licence for stuff like operating cars and planes). How about some good old fashioned common sense? It stands to reason if we are all fine with the idea of proper training to get a drivers or pilots license and we can understand the reason for automotive and airplane inspections, then why for goodness' sake can't we wrap our gun-loving brains around the concept of licensing gun use and safety inspections of firearms? I don't know about anyone else, but the last place I want to be is between someone unbalanced enought to start shooting in public and the person (people) who think it is their duty to "bring him down".

    RE: Gun Ownership

It seems to me that our founding fathers having just thrown off the tyranny of the British, clearly meant the right to bear arms as a deterrent for tyrannical government.

@rladlof, is that a typo, should it read 'he may be a kind of animal'? (now I feel like I've insulted all of the animal kingdom :-( )

I would like to go on record now as stating that I can find not evidence that President Obama can or does play either checkers or chess. Additionally, throwing baseballs and tossing bowling balls appears to outside his bailiwick. On the other hand, our President does seem to ‘got Game’ on the basketball court.

As for governing (the job we are actually paying him for), President Obama appears to be the most able Reagan Republican presently holding Federal Office at this time.

    @ rladlof

There is no actual evidence that Dan Gainor IS an “incredible douchey ass hat.” The ideas he regularly and consistently expresses are sound “incredibly douchey” and have the definite flavor of “asshatery.”

Are you familiar with English Prime? General Semantics by Alfred Korzybski?

If people can be Drunk and openly carry a gun, then I want the right to shoot them on sight on the basis of self defense.

Let's run that up the pole and see who salutes.

    @Quark,

One of the frustrating things about Thom's show is that he feels he can hold up the left end of the spectrum, and gives the right-wing shills time to debate him. He rarely puts on folks farther to the left of him, although he does mention his putting an old CPUSA fellow on once...

I would echo the call to put Richard Wolff on sometime (thanks LeMoyne.) There is much to be said about the Socialist agenda that is blooming in the Southern Hemishere, and we could collectively learn more from that quarter...far more than from all the Dan Gainor's (and that woman from whatever organization that I religiously tune out) put together. If you enjoy overtime, 8 hour days, vacations, etc., thank a Socialist.

Did Thom even mention the Cochabomba Climate Summit?

Yellowbird7 meet rladlof, rladlof meet Yellowbird7, you two might just find a lot to talk about, both of you seem to be singing the same tune. (Not knocking your point-of-views in the least by the way).
