CNN which is Somewhat fair and balanced compared to Fox will be owned by one of the most conservative company in the USA. Guess what direction it will go.
Hi Thom, When is Bernie coming back to your show? I miss brunch with Bernie. can he come in for a hour or two before the elction and give us his take on what is going on. Since he is no longer in the running for President he should be free to talk and come on your show and take calls.
keep up the great work Thom.

My concern is, what about microbs and minerals? Aren't we still talking about malnutrition with all you can eat?
Love it. Very impressive. Revealing.
wondering 2: Thom was talking about public school teachers who are forced to opt out of the payroll deduction for Social Security, and instead are forced into the "tender mercies" of the wall street banksters.
My unrelated question is: How does Chuck Todd get away with spending half a show with Republicans beating up on Hillary about her one time support for the TPP? How could the hypocrisy of the republicans he was interviewing not occur to him? Why didn't he state...wait a minute, your party as a whole is in favor of the TPP, Hillary and the Dems as a whole are not? Lets keep the voters confused Chuck....way to go man!
Sadly america buys its inovation
All them folk in the mericas can't think like them in Oz... whoooo!
wonering2 - rest assured we are getting screwed... very sadly!
Can anyone tell me the specifics or references of the first story Thom spoke about today concerning privatizing social security and the states that don't have it and thus force people into 403b's (?) that skim billions off the top? I was driving distracted and missed the details... Thanks!
Some 10,000 years ago humans slowly transitioned from gathering food plants to growing them.
These new Aeroponic farms initially developed by NASA are of the same historical impact!
While not a solution to over population, they will allow humans the freedom to live under the harshest conditions anywhere on or off the planet.

Bobcix -- You need to listen to Thom more. Balancing the budget will destroy the economy (just ask Andrew Jackson). You could also ask FDR who tried to balance the budget in 1936(?) and did serious damage to the New Deal. Maybe you could ask Reagan who tripled the national debt and "everybody" loved him.
Your plan would increase the RPM of the revolving door.
The thing you are missing is that the US govt is one of the best investors around. To understand how this works you need to look at debt the way economists do. It is the ratio of what you call the debt to the GDP.
KCRuger -- My stat classes were 50 years ago. Any number above the 50% level has zero effect on the median.
All the focus on overtly narcissistic men like Donald Trump feels dangerous for women to me. Most people aren't aware (I wasn't until this month) that not every man with NPD is as unable to disguise his sociopathy as is Trump. I don't like Trump, but at least we can see him coming, and for that, I'm grateful. I think that's why I have so much more anger towards Bill Clinton than I do towards Trump. Clinton represents himself as a man who cares about the vulnerable and other people's feelings. Covert Narcissists like Bill Clinton are scarier, because they are charming and better at putting forward a public image that makes people trust them. They can fake empathy, but they can't feel it, so, they hurt people, and they do it without any guilt. They don't have a conscience but they are able to convince others that they do, which is what makes them toxic. It causes more damage, especially for those who are trusting and empathetic, as women tend more often to be in a patriarchal culture.
People need to realize that economic despair is an industry in America, so don't get buried in bad news.
I'm an independent financial aid analyst from Western Washington State, and I'm in my fourth year of publishing a free website targeted at "Pell Kids", the children of middle and lower income American families. My purpose is to help them find colleges they can really afford using freely accessible tools on the Net.
Excessive college costs and loans are no longer necessary - Congress gave us the tool to avoid those problems in 2008. And, if we parents help our kids through this process, the results can be amazing. The news can be great. But it's really up to us - the Mom's, the Dad's, and the student's other close relatives and helpers - because American high school counselors are typically way behind the times on this.
Becoming a modern American financial aid resource for your family only takes an hour or two, and it can easily save you and your child $100,000 in college costs and loans. Here's the URL for my website:

@chuckle8: My stats classes were 30 years ago, but I do remember that the median simply means 50% are above & 50% are below that number, so yes, it is affected by the large numbers at the right end of the spectrum, just not to the extent that the avg. or per-capita is.
The 1% owns the majority of the House and Senate. They get what they want.
As I've stated before, in order to balance the budget and make the House of Representatives and Senate more responsible, we should do the following:1. Repeal the 27th Amendment. Modify the clause stating that member so Congress shall be paid a salary from the US Treasury by removing the period at the end of the sentence and adding the following: ", except the members of Congress will not be paid from indebtedness and when it becomes necessary that the Congress must authorize and appropriate more expenditures than receipts, the members of Congress shall be provided with lodging and food at the same rat as the lowest paid members of the armed forces. Salaries shall be apportioned to the time actually spent in chambers, either registered into the House of Representatives or the Senate Chambers or the respective Committee chambers during actual hearings proceedings. Expenses during periods of US Treasury indebtedness shall not be allowed to the members of Congress. Any salary or expenses allowed to the members of Congress that have not been paid at the end of the respective Congressional period shall be null and void at the next election date."
This would require a balanced budget depending on receipts to the treasury equally on exceeding the authorized and appropriated expenditures. This is the usual understanding of a "balanced budget" experienced by the ordinary citizenry of the U.S.
js121 -- Are you aware of Greg Palast's work? Do you read Brad's blog?
KCRuger -- Just a mathematics thing. The median is used because it is not effected by any large numbers above the 50% level. Average or per capita numbers are quoted by the right wing to cover up the huge ill-gotten gains of the 1% (more like the 0.01%).
DHBranski: As I'm sure you already know, government owned and manipulated by money and power foments the poverty you so much want to end.
Self serving Teabaggers like Paul Ryan, the type Thomas Paine warned us about, need to exit government employment for poverty to lesson in this country.
Guys like Trump own guys like Paul Ryan....that's a fact.
The Fascists/capitalists love a low income society. To make ends meet, citizens have to take on extra work which tightens the job market, and that in turn keeps wages low. It's a time tested strategy to keep all new income growth flowing to the top.
At least with Trump we have had a glimpse of the inner workings of a typical Fascist/capitalist. ...unregulated and totally out of control.
So what is the current median income after said $2800 gain? I suspect it is below $60K. Well, it was $58K in 1999! This stat obviously includes all the ill-gotten gains of the 1%; that needs to be eliminated from the conversation to get a true picture. Then there is the time value of money thing; adjusted for inflation, we are nowhere near recovered.
The GOP has become a terrorist organization. They spread fear and doubt as a political objective, ie. Caucus Room in 2009,leading to the TP; but now they believe it. It's personal so it's emotional.
I love the blog. Great post. It is very true, people must learn how to learn before they can learn. lol i know it sounds funny but its very true. . .

Over the last ten years, those on Social Security Disability only received a couple of COLA increases.
Some years ago, the elderly poor and the disabled on Socuial Security were enrolled in food stamps. Congress kicked off 2015 with virtually ending food stamps, cutting those benefits from $115 per month, down to $10.
