AnnofArk, You have most of your history straight, however, prior to the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, world maps designated that little strip of land on the Med as Palestine. Not all, but the majority of Palestine's population were ethnic Arabs. After 1948 Palestine was divided into two states, Israel and Palestine. So, the logical deduction is that they are or were, in 1948, Palestinians, and in 1967, and in 1969 when Arafat took over the PLO or Fatah. What should they be called?

Don't toss all of the U.S. into the anti-Semitic "pot" please. Questioning the moralilty and legality of policy and actions is the norm among concerned people. My concern, seriously: justification for bulldozing of Arab/Palestinian homes in occupied territory? The territories presently controlled by Israel as a result of the Six Day War of '67 were designated "occupied" territory by an international court.

Bernie is suggesting topic specific debates. This would require more than a bumper sticker level of response. The threat of this kind of exposure might well clear the fools from the race and encourage more knowledgeable candidates well versed in the issues of the position. Climate is a must have topic.

Suggest for all persons who dare to think "outside the envelope" read the Atlantic magazine feature article on front of bright orange cover:

"Better Watch What You Say" about the colleges going uptight with political correctness like none before. It is a scandal were the root causes exposed which I propose traces to #KochBrothers buying into private colleges and donors $$$ with strings attached to others. Started with 1980 and renewed in 2000 (Reagan then Bush-Cheney). In my opinion it is #Totalitarianism in action, no different than WWII Nazi Germany except the killing part not applcable. Irony is students going into huge loan debt while being emotionally made totally screwed up. If Higher Education is treated as #Bernie2016 proposes, free to public colleges this problem described would start letting go the strangle-hold grip on students psychology caused by these #Totalitarians. This is an early warning shot I am putting out here. Just joined today here at Thom Hartmann. What I am suggesting is we have a authoritarianism problem on top of our racial problem, and it could well relate to the attacks on O'Malley then Bernie Sanders twice by - I propose - a "Swiftboat" of Bernie Sanders like GOP doing a fake protest organization with a commendable name. Well, "Citizens United" sounded good also? Was a #KochBrothers case they got through SCOTUS that has given them the keys for a Totalitarian Take-over in 2016 - if Bernie does NOT win.

The crucial difference with BLM is that much of the violence directed toward Blacks is systematically state financed. Note that all violence is not physical.

  • Dom Arotzarena, Who's responsible for the Oakland violence - the police or the mayor?   9 years 42 weeks ago

Arotzarena is a cover artist. Thom you should have ask why he wasn't there? He was the president of the OPOA at the time, the protest was planned, officers from around Northern California were called into help with crowd control (including CHP). Why wasn't Arotzarena there in support of his associates?

The fact of the matter is Arotzarena was more than willing engaged in white coller misconduct after the physical misconduct of his fellow officers. How could he? Well he worked in the Homicide Division which was responsible for investigating "use of force" incidents (UOF Level 1). People get arrested for a petty crime but beat to unconsciousness. Where did they end up? Arotzarena's holding cell.... So he could investigate a non-homicide? Probably not. So he could cook the books more like it...

OPD is structured the same way now as it was then.

  • "Unequal Protection: How Corporations Became People."   9 years 42 weeks ago

Thank you Mark. I just tuned in and am reminded of my trip to Israel in '97. When the issue of the Palestinian "apratheid" and the Gaza issue came up, there was always double talk and avoidance of the issue by our Isralei military officer guide.

Apartheid was my bottom line for a discription of what we encountered, the same bottom line as Jimmy Carter came to.

As long as Bibi can keep his ultra right wing fear tactics going, Israel can continue to cast themselves as victims. You are right; for some reasons, yours among them, most of Israels Jews do not want peace; they want it all and they want the United State to fight a war for them while they "hold our coats". Is it any wonder the hawks of the U.S. do not want peace in the mid East any more than they do. McCain/Graham/Boehner/Bibi et al do not want a peace agreement with Iran.

This is EXACTLY why it is necessary to have GMO and other labelling on all of our food. BUT, as was mentioned here, these companies have so much money, that employ strong lobbyists that are the greater voice...as does happen in other third world countries. This should be really frightening to EVERYONE!

  • "Unequal Protection: How Corporations Became People."   9 years 42 weeks ago

RFL Bob et al., don't play the disingenuous victim card (Reminds of a time when the Clinton Administration tried to mediate the conflict and Israeli negotiators objected to their approach complaining, "No, no, no! We must be the victims!") . Max Blumenthal didn't call Israel an apartheid state because it was Jewish. Pleeeze, don't play that card! He called it that because apartheid is what is practiced there, especially in the West Bank to accomodate illegal settlements built in contravention to UN agreements and basic principles of human rights. In fact, Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, Nobel Peace Prize winning, non violent anti apartheid leader called it "worse than apartheid". (Did you know that Israel, according to a report on Democracy Now! of several years ago, during the BDS movement on South Africa in the early '90s, used to help South Africa circumvent the sanctions by importing South African goods, stamping "Made in Israel" on them and exporting them, then, to their original destination - brothers and comrades in apartheid, how touching?)

Israelis routinely murder Palestinian leaders and negotiators or violate a sacred Muslim site like Ariel Sharon at the Temple Mount or willfully do something else that can't but provoke Palestinians whenever peace negotiations seem to be approaching fruition. They even invaded Yassar Arafat's compound when he publicly accepted the two state solution after decades of he wanting to "push Israel into the sea".

The fact is, Israelis don't want peace. Not only do their actions leave no doubt about it but their motives are plain too. Bottom line is there is a finite amount of land and water in the region and Israel has to make room for any Jew in the world who wants to move there so there SURE ain't no room for any Palestinians.

Israel is a colonial settler state, the "A land without a people for a people without a land" business is an inhuman, genocidal cannard. The parallel between the Palestinians and Native Americans was made long before Max Blumenthal. The land was already very crowded but the indigenous people there were not European so they didn't matter.

Israel can't continue to play the helpless, hapless, homeless victim of the Jew in diaspora anymore. Israel is a major world power - in alliance with most other world powers - and, like other world powers, it abuses defenseless people (Palestinian homemade rockets are hardly more effectual than the rocks the youths throw and, besides, they are the resistance) whose concerns and survival are inconvenient for it.

I was part of an Eastern European exile community of WW II refugees in Chicago, growing up, and I was of the only small handful of its members who openly, publicly and strongly opposed the anti semitism within it - and took a lot of heat for it - and I will oppose anyone's ethnic cleansing and naziism, Jewish or otherwise (I am also of the opinion that much of the Eastern European mind, imported into Israel from Jewish communities in Eastern Europe, accounts for much of Israeli thinking and sentiment on the issues. There are a lot of "authoritarian personalities" there). I accept NO double standard!

By the way, the Israeli media has reported that the Israeli Army used the same methods to put down the Intifada as were used to suppress the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising - and if you don't think Gaza's a ghetto I don't know what universe you are from.

As another South African anti apartheid leader once said, "Those who think of themselves as victims soon become victimizers of others." No amount of previous victimization entitles anyone to victimize others.

I gree most economic discussions and teachings are B.S.. Do you recall when Greenspan's public representation of his policies were that he was working to stem inflation but then was caught on a recording saying he was actually trying to do the opposite but none of the talking head economists ever suggested his policies were backwards.

Refering to high speed trading as,"..getting a look in.." I find very irritating. It is no different than past posting at a race track. Who couldn't be a billionaire if they are allowed to place their bet after the race is run. That is why billions(?) where spent on a faster cable across the Atlantic to save micro seconds in trade time.

As usual, the dark side portion of your panel had the loudest voices. The discusision became a cacophanous microcosm of our macrocosm world in the 21st century. I think it would be more productive if members of future panels have an allotted time to make their points, and no one can interrupt them until their time is up. That way facts can speak louder than words.

Just for Thom....why do people do things when "no one is making money"?

But something strange DID happen this week....the DJIA has been leading the

DJIA futures for a very long time.......and this is not normal for any forward trading

contracts........this week, this spread flip flopped.......by roughly 200 pts.

But Thom, the CRASH....happened, long ago........we now have a managed CRASH.

If the Mellenials turn up like it looks they will be according to the age of te crowds attending Bernie's rallies, they will not only be voting for Presidents, but for their congress members too correct? What would be the point of going out to vote and not bothering to vote for their reps in Congress? ... i agree thi must be made clear to them, but will we not have a damn good chance to eliminating the ppressive Republican majoriy in both Senate and House if the Mellenials turn out to vote? How many seats in Congress are up for reelection in 2016? That's what's important.

  • Are Obama supporters flocking to the Bernie Sanders' campaign?   9 years 43 weeks ago

EXACTLY! That's what I'm talking to potential voters about; with an obstructionist Congress, every Presidential goal is faced with almost insurmountable odds. We MUST push for Democratic majorities in Congress, or Bernie couldn't accomplish anything, and Hillary could accomplish little. When talking with others in the 99% who might be persuaded, make sure your conversation includes Congress as well as the presidency!
