Barnicle is simply making a valid point that a profession comes with inherent responsibilities unique to that job. I don't see that as being unsympathetic. In fact, there are plenty of Barnicle's coverage that is absolutely sympathetic and in tune with the facts of the community.
I have no idea why a decent guy like Joe Biden will even bother running given the political zeitgeist we living in.
I still cannot agree with Bernie Sanders defining himself as "socialist" or "democratic socialist". Both definitions a/ not accurate ( after all, Socialism , by definition, is government MONOPOLY, which Bernie opposes ) and b/ tainted by negative connotations ( too many dictators fancied themselves as "socialists" ).
When I'm explaining Bernie's platform to my Republican and Conservative friends ( and even to one Monarchist among them.... ) , I use the definition which certainly catches their attention and opens their minds :
" Social Democracy as a political system and Free Market as an economic system".
I.e. the leaders of the country are to be elected by the democratic voting while the country's economy is to be free of monopoly and free of preferential treatments of corporations, so every business plays by the same rules. I.e. no "too big to fail" and no "too big to compete with".
( I'd say that the whole idea of "incorporating" / relieving business owners of liability for their actions should be outlawed , but I yet to see if any candidate comes with this point in his platform .
So far not even those who are not after corporate money are not likely to think about it, though for different reasons. (Mr Trump is exploiting corporate laws himself , after all )
Anyway, the platform offered by Senator Sanders is designed to create truly free market economy , friendly for small businesses and start-ups , with banks broken into small ones and barred from speculation - so funding businesses will be , again, their main source of profit. Which will encourage creation of new businesses - be it private ones ( for conservative -minded people ) or co-ops ( for democratically - minded folks ) .
Which , combined with social reforms of Bernie's platform , can only be accurately described as "FREE-MARKET Socialism".

However, I have to register my deep resentment about your guest during your last show of this past week on Tuesday. And I called in to contest some of his assertions but the only call you took was with someone who agreed with Max Blumenthal's beliefs. Max Blumenthal is probably a very fine reporter, but to refer to Israel as an Apartheid State because it is the Jewish homeland is disgusting. Arabs are not being subjugated. Arabs in Israel can vote, they have a party in the Knesset. Arabs in the West Bank, who I think Max was referring to, do not have the right to vote because they are not part of greater Israel and will never be. His book should be called the 10 year war. He's completely OFF in stating, as he did that Israel invaded last year and then Hamas began firing off rockets into Israel. Tom, I know you know that those rockets began flying into Israel the day after Israel unilaterally left Gaza in 2005. And they have continued since then, not the day after Israel invaded last year–having had enough of a growing number of rockets AND attacks from the myriad of secret tunnels. And comparing Gaza to the Warsaw Ghetto, my word what an inappropriate, inaccurate and ghastly comparison. The Israelis are waiting for a Palestinian partner to make peace with. The Palestinians have had at least two peace offers that included part of Jerusalem for their new state. Turned down twice! Why? They don't want part of the land that is Israel, they don't want peace; they want all of what we know as Israel and Max confirmed that by asking why Israel won't allow the return of all the Palestinians who voluntarily left their properties in 1948 so surrounding Arab countries could come in and smash the Israelis. Thankfully, from my perspective, that did not happen.Nor did the surrounding Arab armies have success in 1967, 1973 or afterward. Two years ago, Abbas said publicly, "How much longer must we be punished for the mistake we made in 1948?" The Israelis don't have a death wish for the country--they are not going to allow the Arabs to outnumber the Israelis--which is why they don't want the West Bank. Tom, I don't like PM Netanyahu for many of the same reasons that you don't and I especially do't like his disdain for a peace process or the new UN representative who is an avowed opponent of two states. So, I do see Israel for its good and bad. If the Palestinians want a two-state solution, they should force Israel's hand by agreeing to sit and negotiate without preconditions. The Israeli public WILL vote out any government that does not seize the opportunity to make peace--and that's not at all the case with either Hamas or Fatah. I respect your program, on reasons being that it takes guts for any American media to dispute Israeli positions, but the absurd propositions of Max Blumenthal were outrageous and needed to be contested. Aggression is a hysteric fit.It might be caused by frustration, of course, but the point is - hysteria expresses itself through human behavior depending of what hormones are available. Uncontrollable crying fits happen in estrogen-rich bodies, while testosterone causes the same hysteria to express itself in uncontrollable aggression fits. And, of course, we have all seen infantile type hysteria expression in juvenile tantrums.
Now, as we all know (and what modern PC prohibits us to admit) that the only way to effectively deal with hysteric fits is - physical impact, which is something totally unacceptable outside this particular condition. I cannot imagine slapping or spanking a human being under any other circumstances , let alone hitting hard - that is, unless in self-defense . Though, there's one more case to use physical force - that is, in defense of someone else. Which is exactly the case of hysteric fits - the person has to be defended against his/her own self.
Therefore, qualified mental healthcare professional will know better than trying to reason with a person during hysterica fit, it doesn't work this way. First and foremost the fit has to be STOPPED and only after that comes every other form of treatment. Like analysis, reasoning, medications and consolations/negotiations. ( "No, you cannot have this expensive toy, and if you don't get up from the floor, Mother never will go shopping with you again " , or " No, you cannot alter grown man's upbringing, get a divorce lawyer" or " No , folks , you cannot convert everyone to Islam and you cannot have your caliphate on your neighbor country land , get over it."
Recently, Thom Hartmann paralleled the condition of African American population in USA to a person suffering PTSD, saying that they are understandably not to be held responsible for their uncontrollable anger after suffering for 3 centuries. (Strangely, Thom somehow fails to cut the same PTSD slack to people practicing Judaism, which folks have been persecuted for millenniums, blaming them for defending themselves. Go figure.)
Anyway, if we follow Thom's logic, ISIS must be venting frustration of being defeated in the end of 17th century in the neighborhood of Vienna by the army of Jan III Sobieski and been stopped from conquering Europe , i.e. they are having typical hysteric fit of masculine/testosterone type. While our leaders are trying to appease them instead of STOPPING the fit in the first place.
I thought we should demand that our politicians are obligated to take gynecology course ASAP before exposing depth of their ignorance trying to interfere with women's health issues, but it looks like they'd better take mental health 101 course first, before it's too late to stop this world-threatening hysterical fit of Islamists.

apparently you didn't read by comment. Again, if you didn't know already, the "settlements" were began under Rabin, and promoted by Sharon. Natanyahu, as I already said, would like to be a full-fledged neo-Liberal, but there are too many other elements in the country that won't let him, yes including the not so right wing religious parties that support social programs that cover "all the citizens of the nation", inclucing the Palestinian Arab minority. In fact, if you haven't read about how Palestinian Arabs in Jerusalem are opting for Israeli citizenship so they can get those benefits, a trend, and how many I can't say.
Fact is that one of the reasons that the PLO is not talking is on account of Natanyahu's talks with Hamas, as well as other Arab nations in the region, The other day, on Israeli pol said something about it, and Abu Mazen is upset that Hamas actually "is talking". Yeah, just another example of how "together" national leadership of the Palestinian Arab movement is.
the Israeli PM does what is good for Israel, maybe not for the States, but why would you explect him to do otherwise. Heck, Jordan and Israel seem to be working together on the Syrian front. and if you didn't know, Palestinian Arab tycoons invest in Israeli companies, and other curiousities that might complicate your version of the situation.
Ah! if you looked up some things that your arch enemy Jabotinsky wrote--during the Mandatroy period he suggested a bi-national state where Jews and Arabs might share the governance. You see, the British were tough on Jewish immigration, but Arabs from the region came to live and work in the Mandate without much trouble since the "Zionist enterprises" were doing well enough to need workers in the cities and outlying regions. You din't hear about that, either.
Don't worry, the more you learn the more you realize the Middle East is more complicated a place than you imagine, Currintly, it looks like the enemies of the enemies have are becoming friends vis a vis Iran. Whether there will be war, I can't say. There is a commonality of interests, my friend. I don't understand it, but that seems to be happening, so . .. whatever you thought you knew, changes.
Kend, we can afford Bernie's policies, we just have to have a more equitable sharing of the wealth. We've done it before we can do it again.

I wish I could fill in for Thom during this week and a half to do a specialized show about how the U.S. Constitution could be improved. It'd be a great way to teach people about civics, the principles of constitutional frameworks, and the pragmatic side of political mechanics.
If you think of it as a strategy, it seems brilliant to have Hillary Clinton up front taking all the Republicans' flak, so that Bernie can come in and sweep up when she bows out at too late a date for the Republicans to figure out how to bring him down. Just like Trump is taking most of the Democrats' flak, and that party doesn't seem to be worrying about Walker.
