There's no way China can beat us in the sea. They need that energy. Not much to worry about unless Russia and China go even farther in developing ties (including energy) which will take a while. Until then, overlapping business interests will frustrate any drive to war. If it happens it would be after things blow up in the Middle East or Ukraine. Though even then China gives diplomatic support to Russia and sometimes Iran but isn't interested in military actions overseas.
So, for now other people want our lifestyle (for some reason) and since the nations in that area don't have any particular inclination towards China the real question is what is the popular will regarding the free-trade deal in those places. What I want to know is whether the average citizen in places like Indonesia recognizes the impact to their future it would have. The anti-democratic provisions of free-trade agreements usually are enforced most rigorously on "developing" countries. But hey, the WTO will provide you a free lawyer if you need one.
Maritime law is not so simple as to be relegated to a body like ASEAN. Maybe the U.N. but basically its a multilateral diplomatic thing where really nobody has absolute sovereignty very far from their coast. Which is a good thing. And which is why China is building those islands. Well, they can build them but if the issue escalates there will be a lot of diplomacy before anything happens. A lot of those countries that use that route are not hostile to the U.S. and not necessarilly interested in China having unilateral authority there. Japan comes to mind for example. Also the Phillipines.
karagirl -- Don't forget to mention the rebate part of the carbon tax.
UNC Tarheels -- For Pearl Harbor we were not prepared. For 9/11 we had a overwhelming amount of intelligence telling us it was going to happen. Just ask Rand Paul. As Thom has pointed out, W on a trip to Italy prior to 9/11 stayed on board an A/C carrier because he knew of a plan to fly an airplane into a tall building. Richard Clarke was running around the White House a month before 9/11 telling everyone it was going to happen.
Chi Matt -- You would think there would be more important things to think about. Are you aware that prior to the republican convention, police broke into homes that were planning to protest. That sounds to me like the people on this blog should be concerned.
The NSA could not provide an example to the congress of a single instance where the bulk data collection provided any worthwhile intelligence.
Data mining certainly means they can go after any annoying protest they don't like. They can use the data mining algorithms without effecting their other activities.

In reference to free trade......had our elected officials respected the will of the rabble instead of the royals, in other words, the vast majority instead of the lilliputian minority, we wouldn't be trapped in this free trade national security malfunction.
I shake my head everytime I think about it, there are multi millions of us, and only a relative handful of them......WTF? We need to outlaw monopoly capitalism/extreme wealth, and thus the arbitrary power that comes with it.
Of course. China also is the largest single owner of U.S. treasuries with 1.2 trillion dollars of the or about 7.2% of the entire debt. If it were to try to cell the debt wholesale interest rates throughout the U.S. would rise taking the U.S. economy and probably bringing China along with it. I personally have about as much difficulty as China being essential to U.S. business as say Germany, but it is abject incompetence to give this sort of power especially for military components to a single foreign country if true.
I remember back in the '70's there was a theory that if China and the United States were to go to war, China could win by simply surrendering - the US could never manage or control a country the size of China.
Now, apparently, they can win the war before it even happens.
This is progress???
Of course our lawyer-filled Congress screwed us in trade with China by letting them enact barriers to entry as well as currency devaluation, resulting in a trade deficit which represents welfare to China at our expense. Our computers are made in China, so what's the liklihood of a weapons system working against them? Chinese political leaders are scientists & military; they took our lawyers to the cleaners.
The TPP debate reminds me of what NAFTA did in the last decade. I remember the 2005 JibJab - Big Box Mart https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKv6RcXa2UI video explaining the whole sad situation.

People are gouged not only on drugs for cancer, but on everyday drugs like insulin and related supplies. A relative was on insulin for years and the price kept going up for it and even the testing supplies. The companies know Medicare will pay it so they are gouging all of us. Likewise another relative has to take an expensive drug weekly for MS. Same drug 20 years ago cost about $300/ week, now it's $3,000. She has a good insurance plan, it pays everything, so drug companies say why not charge more. The sky's the limit.
Our only chance is to unite with Bernie Sanders. That is if he doesn't have a small aircraft crash. Third world status sounds like an awful way to live.
If Bernie approached public TV in a state with a Republican candidate with an offer to debate said candidate, that would be an irresistible offer to the benefit of the station and would be a put up or shut up to the Republicans. Cross party debate is a brilliant idea which can break Bernie out of the corporate media imposed straight jacket.

Leaf is removed from oil after the INfusion process. By volume, combine SEA SALT and the oily leaf, pack into a tub and pour 1/4 cup any combination of fine quality oils over it. Easy way is half organic sesame (soaks into skin) and half organic OLIVE oil (coats skin, keeps moisture in body). Let sit a few weeks in dark cool place, this is called cold infusion. Thick coating oils will not work well, such as canola, corn oil, peanut oil etc. Molecules are too large to enter skin surface. They don't even DIGEST completely....which is what causes the "great brownie - KNOCKED ME RIGHT OUT " events reported after using the leaf in butter / margarine process. Wouldn't most people prefer to be awake with digestion working instead of "greasy spoon indigestion" and comatose / prolonged sleep / drugged feeling.
Use salt scrub techniques, loose open hands smoothly polishing the entire body with palms, not gripping with finger tips. Best to start with the back and elbows and backs of thighs where skin is thickest. Massaging is not the object, as massaging may make raw spots by removing more than two layers of skin cells. Best done standing on sheet of plastic or newspaper to avoid getting plant leaf material into bathtub drain. Allow oil/salt/leaf to stay on skin for 10-20 minutes. Wipe all leaf material off the body, then briefly rinse skin clean in mild warm water (no soap or cleansers). Wrap in warm towel, stay in warm room until waves of heartfelt loving delight calm down. Called Agape, Heart Flooding, GLOWING, Inverse Orgasm, Body & MIND POLISH ....... but by any name, the feelings are not genital, but may open memories of blissful moments in youth, and most sensations fade within a few hours. Today I called my congresswoman Zoe Lofgren of CA., in DC, I asked the girl I was talking to, how she stood on TPA. I was told by that girl. She was not authorized to talk to me about the TPA Vote.and that no one in the office was authorized to talk about it. So I called she office in San Jose. and got the same line. I gave them my name, phone#, address and a ear full.
Mainstream media is evil...no ethics or values - but do they do a job selling themselves.
