  • Did Democrats finally get the message?   10 years 23 weeks ago

Democrats and Republicans both cater to the same small group. They occasionally throw us a bone at selected times to keep us ever hopeful. It's getting old.

Now that it is safe, the Corpocrats do this. They know the Republicorps won't do it. The Corpocrats will give the illusion of doing something for the people but still keep their corporate masters happy.

Don't know if you figured it out or will read this--but Sinclair Lewis wrote "It Can't Happen Here". Of course, it is happening here.

"Although these ideas aren't likely to come to fruition while Republicans are in charge, many people are happy to see Democrats once again demonstrating how they're different from those on the Right." OH PULEEZ!!! "Many people" are not that stupid!

This is just demonstrating that Democrats are complicit in the charade that we might actually have a two party system. They "propose" legislation that is "different from those on the Right" when and only when they know that "these ideas aren't likely to come to fruition while Republicans are in charge."

HEY THom! Why are you aiding in the perpetuation of this myth? SHAME on you!!!

  • Did Democrats finally get the message?   10 years 23 weeks ago

that may be true my friend, but they all have been letting us down time and time again on both sides of the aisle but we the people are to blame for allowing them to get away with everything. We just dont vote, esp where it matters the most like the mid term where we were molly whopped by the republibons. i mean jeez everytime i even try to have a convo with people they get annoyed, dont know anything, or just are not interested in politics, which blows my mind. we all need to at minimum be aware of whats going on, and the majority of the people arent. its so sad, but we cant just give up i do know that, and we most def cant vote for anyone on the right.

  • Did Democrats finally get the message?   10 years 23 weeks ago

About time Democrats woke up and initiated progressive legislation. The DINOs need to get the message and stop voting for KXL pipeline, for weakening Dodd-Frank, stop being shills for big corporations, etc.

  • Did Democrats finally get the message?   10 years 23 weeks ago

Can't you see? This is all bogus theater. The Democrats always talk like progressives when campaigning then govern like Republicans after elected. They're suddenly fearless progressives now because Republicans are in charge and there's no chance of any of this passing - and upsetting their corporate sponsors.

Ralph Nader wrote in his book, Crashing the Party, that in the 2000 Presidential Election, when Al Gore was on TV saying, "I'm gonna fight for you against the big oil companies and big business...etc....." Joe Liebermann was on the phone to those same big oil companies and big businesses assuring them that Gore didn't mean any of it. It's all just to keep the pot boiling and maintain the fiction that there's any substantive difference between Republicans and Democrats.

  • Did Democrats finally get the message?   10 years 23 weeks ago

I'll wait and see. I've been burned too many times hoping the Dems would fearlessly embrace their values like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

The time to have embraced those values was before election day. Note that we won on virtually all progressive ballot issues including Minimum Wage, which no one ran on.

  • Did Democrats finally get the message?   10 years 23 weeks ago

    It's about time!!

We also need to discuss the reasons for the initial implimentation of the inheritance tax and how diminishing or eliminating it contributes so much to greater inequality.

Those who say taxes were already paid on that money ignore the fact that for most large fortunes any tax paid on them was at the much lower rate given capital gains. Workers pay a higher tax rate than passive investors. How does society benefit when those who work for an income pay taxes at a higher rate than those who live off interest or are lucky enough to be bequeathed a fortune?

  • Should Obama allow private corporations to rebuild our infrastructure?   10 years 23 weeks ago

Is this a trick question? I'm retired Teamsters and the contractor bid for the work did the work and was paid for the work. I'm just not sure what the question is. Nobody but the people should own the commons roads, water, air they belong to us

  • Did Democrats finally get the message?   10 years 23 weeks ago

Seriously?? Too little too late! Sorry, but the Dems have let down their constituencies too many times and only now, after they've been slammed, do they take on real tax reform?

  • Should Obama allow private corporations to rebuild our infrastructure?   10 years 23 weeks ago

Only as a secondary machine to complement rebuilding and updating. Corporations have shown America, that it can't bebtrusted to build our country into the future. Corruption would be outrageous. Look at the Iraq rebuilding of their infrastructure. Everyone got ripped, and there is now, no infrastructure.

Here's an idea: Term limits based on campaign expenditures. If the winner of an election is also the candidate that spent the most on that election, he's ineligible for a subsequent term.

Quote RichardofJeffer...:Maybe we could smoke some dope, hold hands and sing protest songs until all the bad karma is gone.

RichardofJeffer... ~ Sure we could! it won't help now any more than it did in the 60's; but, it sure will take the edge off while the world crumbles around us. "Kumbaya my Lord, Kumbaya!"

  • DC should be a little more like CA!   10 years 23 weeks ago

I think the Bullet Train is a great idea! A long time coming. Not only will it benefit the environment, businesses all across California will benefit from the convenience and speed offered by the train. It is an investment that will pay for itself several times over in the decades to follow. In short time, Californians will wonder how they ever existed without it. Here in the Bay Area, BART (The Bay Area Rapid Transit train system) was an equally ambitious project when I was a kid. There was much doubt that it would ever be a success. Now, thousands of Bay Area residents rely on the infrastructure on a daily bases. Yet, it is safe to say that BART has indirectly affected the lives of all Bay Area residents. BART has affected the value of homes as well as where people have chosen to live and work. Whenever it goes down, everyone on the road sufferers from the increase in traffic. When it is available, everyone benefits from the decrease in traffic. I have every confidence that in the same way the Bullet Train will be a huge success; and, as a Californian, I personally cannot wait till the day the ribbon is cut.

The US as a nation state is but an illusion.

    Behold the "corporate enterprise zone".

---jobs are exported, small towns die

---illegals flood the country, employers buy their labor

---work visas for Indian programmers, our grads live at home

---a mercenary army, we hang out at the mall

---lawless CEOs pay a fine, shoplifters do time

---banks are bailed, upside down home owners onto the streets

---corporations are legal persons, money is their speech

---over 40 and unemployed, then do the cost effective thing: die

Forget the national anthem, just sing "its all about the bottom line".

It's nothing less than legalized bribery. "Campaign contributions.," "Money is speech." What a horrible joke. If these laws existed in 1907, and not in 2007, it just goes to show that we are going backwards as a nation. Reverse evolution. What a disgrace! We should be ashamed of ourselves. Imagine what the rest of the civilized educated world thinks of us.

A good start would be to significantly reduce the term of Supreme Court Judges, back when a life time term was established the average lifetime was somewhere around fifty to sixty years. Most members appointed to the court by George W. Bush could still be in office in the forth decade of this century !

Actually this should also apply to members of the Congress. If we can term limit the Executive, who is elected by a majority of all the citizens in this country, then why not term limit members of Congress who are elected to office by a majority of voters in their relatively tiny home districts ?

The point here is that no one should be allowed to stay in national elected office until they become firmly entrenched !

This all comes from corporations are people and money is free speach, which you can thank the scotus for. SCOTUS is heavely republican and republicans are heavely for the rich and corporations. They also put Bush in as President. I so wish President Obama would do as FDR did, Judicial Procedures Reform Bill of 1937. President Obama needs to flood the judicial system with more Supreme Court judges that will be less republican and more for the people and the constituition.

  • Time To Lock Up The Lobbyists   10 years 23 weeks ago

That would be awesome to get rid of a supreme court judge for trustworthyness.

Is that even possible and has it been done before.

    If not it should be.

  • Is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) good for the U.S. economy?   10 years 23 weeks ago

The TPP is a disaster waiting to happen. As I understand it, all our environmental laws are negated to foreign investors. Should we file suit against a foreign investor on environmental grounds (coal fired plants, for instance, should China build one here), that foreign owner can sue our government for lost revenues. This can result in billions and billions of dollars our government would have to pay to the foreign entity.

Rather than hoping that we can pass a US Constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's "Citizens United" decision, it would be far more appropriate to simply IMPEACH the five Republican "Justices" who LIED BLATANTLY in order to "justify" that so-called "ruling" which fundamentally amended the US Constituion without going through the amendment process which the US Constitution requires. There is presently NOTHING in the US Constitution that comes even close to justifying their claim that "corporations are people" as far as constitutional rights are concerned. The US Constitution has NOT been so amended. Their ruling was a BOLD-FACED LIE!

Those five "Justices" should be IMPEACHED and removed from office for violating BOTH of the Oaths of Office that they swore to uphold in order to become a Supreme Court Justice! Then the remaining Supreme Court Justices can repair the IMMENSE DAMAGE which those five dishonorable Republican Supreme Court "Justices" have inflicted on the American people.

Great article as usual. Spoilt only an image of Thom "Trying out my brother's .40 cal".

Hardly an appropriate image for someone so opposed to the US's liberal gun laws.

Legend -- Global warming means the entrapment of the energy from the sun. What that energy does can be very unpredictable. Based on what we have seen in that extra energy's intoxication of the polar vortex, it could be that global warming would create a glacier on Chicago.
