arrests issued for owing on credit cards... is not a legal procedure i have ever heard of and owing on a credit card is not a violation of law as far as i know.
Hobbies, First of all, please use spell check, Second, where do you get Clinton's net worth? He is worth about $35~$38m depending on where you get your information, Nothing spectacular in this day and age. Think in terms of sports or entertainment personalities. I am speaking for myself, no one else. I don't get where you are coming from. I ilke Bernie Sanders, who do you like? What do you think of Republicans? Surely Decomrats aren't the only rats in the trap. I support Democrats, with varying degrees of enthusiasm. I can't support any Republicans, especially the newer Tea Party types. Like it or not, we have a choice of two parties with a chance of winning public office. Neither perfect, both corrupt to varying degrees. Ralph Nader is not a viable option, Debate him for what practical purpose? Who provides the best foundation to build on? For the average person, the Democratic party is built on the bedrock of Social Security, Medicare, worker's and civil rights. The Republicans are built on a foundation of quicksand. Hop on with them and you are going down fast.
I was surprised to see 27% in the poll thought Americans would wake up and stop this... With all the corporate money out there "controlling" elections, I dont think it matters much what the people think..
Russell your argument is almost has dishonest has Thoms survey. People are not being arrested for for their depts they are being arrested for not showing up for court. Which probably explains why most of these people didn't pay their bills in the first place. If you beleive in the rule of law and you are a responsible person You show up for your court dates period. Next to clintons wealth during the 2008 primaries when Clinton finally released his tax records it was report by all the major news agencies that he had earned over $100,000,000.00 dollars since leaving the white house. Let me get this strate someone that claims to be socially progressive (support for Sanders PS Sanders is not a democrat) thinks that we should compare a former president with entertainers) please explain. My point is that if you look at Clinton's record he was more right wing then Eisenhower or Nixon(even the man you follow blindly Thom has mentioned this repeatedly) but to sheep that follow blindly I guess it doen't matter what the people you follow do it only matters that they tell you their on your side (sounds tribal to me "BA,BA"). Sir has for who do I follow? I'm no republican and anyone who read my posting can clearly see I am no sheep I question thouse that say they are progressive just has hard if not harder then the opposition. Following blindly is how we got where we are today. The democrats have had has a party platform for years that universal medicare was there gole, well were is it. Thats OK though because people like you will continue to follow blindly. Has to your question who do I support? I support no one blindly and when I do support someone in an election I expect them to follow through on their promises and if they don't my supports stops and I look for someone else. To your point that we have a two party sytem and it can't be changed I feel for you man that your immagination is so weak. If new parties can be created in parliamentary countries like Canada and Australia and you know our system was started with no parties it's easier to start a third party in America then just about anywhere else this argument that you cannot have a third party is just another way to force you to vote for corporate interest or get you not to vote at all. I refuse to be beaten so easily I guess you don't have the stomach for true reform and you must be happy with the way things have been going the last thirty years. True change will take more then one election but I guess your looking for instant solutions hows that working out for you? By the way I have noticed that when people don't have have good responses during debates or arguments they often go on tangents where they either look to attack the person rather then the idea. This seems to be what your doing with your attack on my spelling(most messages I have seen here have errors and I am new at using this service and looked for the spell check, I was not able to find it so instead of taking cheap shots let me know were I can find it) and trying to bring in the Tee party A bunch of right sheep that lack the ability to understand they are fighting against their own best interest(I feel sorry for them almost has much has I do for you and others on the left that don't get that staying with the democrats has the same effect). Has to your point about we have the democratic party to thank for SSN and Medicare you are partly write only. I thank the people more then a political party and over the last thirty years only a democrat has reduced payroll taxes thereby helping to destroy it quicker. Just Like glass segal could only be gotten rid of by a democrat only social security can be destroyed by a democrat. The reasons should be self evident but incase you don't get it think of it this way. The most dangerous enemy is not the one you think is your enemy but the one you think is your friend. Has for workers writes where are the democrats and this president when it come to supporting workers in Wisconson and Michigan has well has other state where workers are under attack. The president during the election said if he saw workers right under attack he would march with them. Well where is he and the rest of the party leadership nowhere. Again say one thing do the opposite. I did not leave the democrats they left me, they sold out and will do worse damage to progressive progress in this country then the republicans could ever do because we know the GOP is the enemy and will fight them But with followers like you this party will have no resistance to putting corporate interest ahead of the peoples interest. The only way to go down faster then supporting the GOP is supporting the Democrats. I for one will continue to fight for progressive progress in this country but I will not waiste my time money or energy on a party that betrays us everytime.
I think Donald Slump should be thrown into a debtor's prison .In 1991, unable to pay a $3.5 billion loan, he declared business bankruptcy. He also came close to filing personal ruin. At the time, his personal debt was estimated to be around $900 million. Due to the bankruptcy, banks and bondholders lost millions. They came to a compromise with Donald Trump. The banks gave him lower interest rates and a longer time frame to repay the debt and Donald Trump gave the investors half the ownership of the Taj Mahal. In mere months the casino was back in business.
Not even a year later, Trump Plaza Hotel folded and Donald had to declare bankruptcy. Again, he worked out a deal where he’d give up 49 percent of the hotel to Citibank and the other lenders and he’d get more time to pay the loan back. It took him two years to repay most of his debt with many sacrifices. He had to give up the Trump Shuttle.
The bankruptcy saga didn’t stop there. In 2004, Donald filed for bankruptcy protection and restructured his debt. He reduced his ownership of Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts to 27 percent and gave bondholders stocks to help lower his debt and then stepped down as CEO. In 2005, things settled down and Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts came out of bankruptcy with a new name, Trump Entertainment Resort Holdings.
Unfortunately the reemergence didn’t last long. On February 17th 2009, Donald Trump filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with a debt ratio of $50 million in assets to his $500 million in debt. This filing made the third bankruptcy for Trump Enterprises.
Hobby, I don't see anywhere in my writing that indicates I blindly follow the Democrats. Bernie Sanders is an Independent who caucuses with the Democrats. It is the philosophy I am trying to convey to you. Look at the Tea Party. In twenty years, they are going to be a blip on the screen of history. The average citizen today never heard of the "Bull Moose" party. Think Ross Perot. Think John Anderson. Here is an analogy: You don't like your car. It's not trustworthy and you keep putting money in it and not getting the dependability you want. Your solution is to build a new car from scratch. It can be done, but requires a huge number of talented people and resources. After all that, you still might not get the car you want. Wouldn't it be better to work from within and rebuild what you have to your specifications? In the Democrats you have a good foundation. Sherrod Brown, Russ Feingold, Anthony Weiner, Al Franken, Nancy Pelosi, and scores of others. That is a great foundation to begin with. If you want to start a third party, who would you begin with that have better credentials than the above? One major thing you have to consider. Real lefties are really only about 20% of the population. You need another 31% or 40% in the Senate to get programs through Congress . Even if you can build an ultra left coalition, it would be impossible to get a 50%~60% plurality. I don't know how old you are or where you are from. I'm an old Vietnam Vet and have been around a long time. If you don't like my advice now, print it out and save it. Bring it out twenty years from now and see where we are as a country. BTW: I'm sorry, your grammar and spelling make your writings difficult to read. Maybe you can type in a word processor and paste it in here.
I'd like to chime in here. We must also keep in mind that the prison-industrial complex has blossomed and will continue to do so for as long as we allow. In CA where I currently reside, the news is that spending on prisons vs. education favors the former. Reasonable people disagree as to what the exact percentages are, but no matter.
The point is that there are those who would prefer to see prison populations rise; those people view the people living in this country not as citizens or human beings, but as a commodity with a correlative profit margin. These powerful people are going to continue to flex their economic and political muscle until somebody figures out a strategy for defeating them. I don't have a good answer.
Some ideas:
1. Ensure that those selected to enforce regulations are committed to justice at all costs. This includes especially those in the DOJ and SEC, the US Attorneys, and local prosecutors. Only when they have the guts to fight the monsters will we begin to get anywhere.
2. Use whatever tools we have as a People to punish our elected officials, such as recalls, impeachments, ethics and/or rules violations, etc. For example, many of them are attorneys and have taken professional oaths and can and should suffer the consequences of breaking those oaths. Perfect cases in point are Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas who refused to recuse themselves when it was clear that they should have, and both Clintons and any number of misdeeds committed.
3. Boycotts, uprisings, sit-ins, non-violent protests, marches, gatherings, educate-a-neighbor activities and the like can at least help us move in the right direction. But it's gonna take MILLIONS of us all together at one time. It won't be easy and not everybody will be on the same page politically, ideologically, religiously, or socially, but we'll have to set that stuff aside and come together against a common enemy in the form of plutocrats.
This stuff is just off the top of my head so feel free to jump in and support/challenge these ideas.
I also just now went and checked which Senators voted for the bailout on 10/1/2008. I don't know why I had not previously checked, but the lions share of the blame falls on Democrats: 40 'yea' votes compared to the Republican's 33 votes.
I was hopeful at the beginning of Obama's tenure. Now I occasionally find myself wishing he WOULD be impeached for any number of reasons.
When are we going to get together and march en masse on Wall Street? How many millions do we need and what is the date?
The first Federal Bankruptcy law was passed in 1800 as a bailout to Robert Morris, who had been part of a massive swindle in New York State which had basically defrauded patriotic American militia and Continental Soldiers of land promised them and then tried to sell it at a profit -- generating a real estate bubble which collapsed and sent him to debtors prison. The first sources I read said that he was let out of jail because of that law. Now I'm reading another one that says he died in prison in 1806. He was a scoundrel and belonged in prison for his crimes, although he also was a signer of the declaration of independence and created a giant pirate navy that fought off the British (for profit of course). The more I read about Robert Morris, Govourneur Morris, and the other scoundrels and patriots of that time the less I'm convinced that either our Constitution or our form of government are sacred documents that might not stand some tweeking.
Republicans will never wake up to what the George W. Bush administration did to this country, because 98% of the "news" is owned by right wing corporations and right wing multi-millionaires. And, the GOP will never look back at what their beloved Ronald Reagan did to start this ball rolling, out of control. So, how can we expect any die-hard Republicans to look any further than Fox Noise for their "news"?
"Thom Hartmann is a creative thinker and committed small-d democrat. He has dealt with a wide range of topics throughout his life, and this book provides an excellent cross section. The Thom Hartmann Reader will make people both angry and motivated to act."
—Dean Baker, economist and author of Plunder and Blunder, False Profits, and Taking Economics Seriously
From The Thom Hartmann Reader:
"Right through the worst of the Bush years and into the present, Thom Hartmann has been one of the very few voices constantly willing to tell the truth. Rank him up there with Jon Stewart, Bill Moyers, and Paul Krugman for having the sheer persistent courage of his convictions."
—Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth
From The Thom Hartmann Reader:
"Thom Hartmann is a literary descendent of Ben Franklin and Tom Paine. His unflinching observations and deep passion inspire us to explore contemporary culture, politics, and economics; challenge us to face the facts of the societies we are creating; and empower us to demand a better world for our children and grandchildren."
—John Perkins, author of the New York Times bestselling book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man
Thom are going to take up the challenge or do you know you don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to the democRATs.
It's OK jsut through in the towel you know theres no hope for these RATS. Join us in taking over the Greens we could really use your help.
