Jeanie,
I am an admirer of Nels and usually agree with most of what he says. Today, less so. I agreed with what you said, (unless it was about celsius!) Your comments regarding messaging were dead on in my opinion. Messaging is a science and an art. Emotion is the key in advertising. Short simple messages work best. The "Right" are experts at this. They manage to get about 1/3 of the voters to vote against their own self interest. They use emotion to pull off this trick. That shows how effective these techniques are.

But THOM, the use of the CarbonArgument to promote Nuke Fission Heat Reactor Plants (aka nukular energy) and clean coal and GMO crops no-till looks more suspicious all the time. Demonizing carbon isn't getting us ANYWHERE but a world filled with subsidized nuke plants, more coal, GMOs and the rich getting richer by playing a shell game with carbon bargaining chips! The CarbonArgument looks more like the distraction used by a pair of pickpockets: One guy bumps you (Look at the carbon!) while the other guy lifts your wallet (give us those taxpayer subsidies!).

Does it have to be this way and this way only?

Thomas Jode said..Founding Truth, I was serious. Are you saying you can’t pull up a link and look at the whole document yourself and give me the solid evidence? ( The Law of Life is God and exists in all living things, so God CAN’T take itself away.)>

The Constitution leaves matters of liberty to the states. Their writings prove they viewed killing the baby in the womb was murder.

DDay,

I phoned minority leader Mitch McConnell's office today to call him out on his insane global warming comments, explaining why the current snow storm is proof of global warming. I also said that Republicans are uneducated, stupid or lying. The staffer said global warming was a matter of OPINION. Exasperated, I said that she, too, was just as stupid! (Not nice, but I didn't care!)

@Jeanie, perhaps DDay and I do say similar things, I for one find a lot of his comments spot on. But yes I do like to challenge him, as well as several others to take it a few steps further.

So- double the celsius figure and add 32 degrees to estimate the difference from celsius to fahrenheit

If the east coast were suffering record cold, then the argument against global warming would sound right (still would be wrong). They are having record snowfalls not record low temperatures.

I feel as though I have an OBLIGATION to call out the liars and fools. I can no longer believe that anyone else (in our government) who SHOULD, WILL.

Listen Mr. Potty Mouth, it is bad enough that you use profanity in one language much less two! I suppose you think the Church Lady doesn't know Frog? And, what makes you so smart that you pass judgment on everything? If you ever pick on darling Nels again, I'll do more than rub your rhubarb! I bet you are a Frog! You certainly aren't anyone's prince. The Church Lady has a bar of soap for you!

Founding Truth:
First off, stop refering to me in the third person. Secondly, have you even READ the Constituion or the Declaration of Independence, because NO WHERE in those documents does it specifcally state that to kill a baby is wrong. These are documents of rights, not of morals. If you want morals, look to yourself for common sense and moral guidelines.

@Quark, Oh I think its coming. Here's my analogy why: Most people don't worry about disasters until the fire is burning up the hillside towards there home, or the mud is sliding down it, snow is falling hard enough to black out there neighborhood etc... my point is this. Some people are vigilant and prepare when the issue is not in there face (as you are doing now) but most do nothing until their way of life is endangered. As the chickens come home to roost more and more people are going to get active, sure some will join Tea Parties, others will create or join progressive movements, but the storm is coming. The Republicans are screwing the American people, and that can't remain hidden, their house of cards is going to fall. Soon you will have more compatriots then you can possibly imagine.

At least that's what I believe.

Well, I doubt Thom would reject the framers' words.

Nels (not verified) 16 years 9 weeks ago
#30

Quark, have you ever noticed that fascism appeared as Monarchies declined. Societies that are led by totalitarian means become unstable. Fascism will lurk in the background so long as there are corporations in existence, its their Gov't of choice after all. In some ways, I think fascism is the cancer that all countries should be wary of, and in some cases, yes I think some are still afflicted by it to some extent.

Nels (not verified) 16 years 9 weeks ago
#31

@Jeanie, there is nothing to wait for, its happening now. Where there's smoke there's fire. Don't think for a minute that the election of Obama and the 60+ seats in the Senate wasn' t the beginning of this. It will continue to grow, the recent race in Massachusetts is proof of it, people are dissatisfied with the status quo, and are aching for change. They aren't voting for Republicans or Democrats, they are voting for something different.... and if the Democratic Party doesn't realize this now, they will lose all sorts of seats in Nov. Change is wanted, its being demanded.

Jeanie (not verified) 16 years 9 weeks ago
#32

So we better make sure we work for actual change and not just say the words.

Quark (not verified) 16 years 9 weeks ago
#33

Nels,

Are there any models of which you are aware where fascist systems were mitigated? Those are what I would like to understand (how they did it, etc.) The only one I know of for sure was this country. Then we had a revolution.

There must be other examples and other means of change. ?

Nels (not verified) 16 years 9 weeks ago
#34

@Quark, well that's a harder one to answer. As I mentioned fascism is a more or less recent form of Government. But fascism is for all intents and purposes, a totalitarian Government. If you want a good model of how fascism was defeated internally, then look at FDR's administration, our country was teetering on the edge then, look to see what FDR did to avoid it.

Capitalism is joined at the hip with Fascism though, those that promote one are promoting the other by default.

@Jeanie, absolutely correct. Agitate, agitate and when in doubt agitate; its the only way to clean this mess up.

The FDR example is one that comes to my mind, too. Sadly, there are no FDRs around. Only citizens (with tea bags and pitch forks.) That could be very messy.

Hmmm...'Sounds familiar --- citizens with tea bags and pitch forks. Will we have a Bastille, too? Then a Napoleon or two? (Or did I skip too many steps?)

How will we deal with our economic "royalists" ?

Nels (not verified) 16 years 9 weeks ago
#39

Sure there are FDR's around, Howard Dean and Dennis Kucinich come to mind right off. I'm quite certain there are others too. FDR, JFK, Lincoln, Washington... the list goes on, aren't aberrations or anomalies, they were in the right place at the right time.

As for your last line, yes the Reign of Terror (French Revolution) does come to mind. I wholeheartedly believe change is coming, I don't know how it will come, I'm hoping for FDR style, over Robespierre.

Quark (not verified) 16 years 9 weeks ago

'Just a thought. Political parties will no longer matter once there is a complete transition to the corporatocracy.

Quark (not verified) 16 years 9 weeks ago
#41

Nels,

I guess what I meant is that there is no one IN PLACE (as FDR was as president) to do what he did. Dean and Kucinich are great, but have no power or in positions to wield any power.

Quark (not verified) 16 years 9 weeks ago
#42

Nels,

Remember the previous Dem. Prez. debates where Kucinich wasn't even allowed to participate in later debates per corporate media decree?

Nels (not verified) 16 years 9 weeks ago
#43

How do we deal with our economic royalists? Well for there sake they better hope for a FDR to come and save them from themselves. I don't really hole animosity for them, in truth I don't know if I would act different if I were in there shoes. Heck I like to sit in hot tubs, drive luxury cars, have obscene amounts of money. I can't say that I would willfully give it up, and I don't know anyone else in my circle of associates would. However, I don't have lots of money, I don't even have health insurance, so I'm pissed, and I may act irrationally because of it, as may many others. I pray for a FDR, Obama could be that type of leader, he may be on the road to it. FDR wasn't the same President on his first day, as he was on the his last. He adapted to the times and needs, I hope Obama follows that path too.

Quark, we're all subject to the whims of the media, me you, Dean and Kucinich. Continue pointing out the lies, speak truth to power, exercise your right to free speech, its one of the most powerful gifts our founders got for us. Yes the corporations hate it and are trying to take it over, but no matter how much money the have, they can tell you to shut up all they want, but they can never make you do so.

If you're losing faith in American ideology, just look how well it has taken root back in Europe. We are only a couple a hundred of years out of the dark ages, and we've come a long way. Take these stumbling blocks that corporations challenge us with as opportunities to hone our freedoms. Freedom is appreciated a heck of a lot more, when one realizes that it may no longer be there.

Thom's Blog Is On the Move

Hello All

Thom's blog in this space and moving to a new home.

Please follow us across to hartmannreport.com - this will be the only place going forward to read Thom's blog posts and articles.

From Screwed:
"Hartmann speaks with the straight talking clarity and brilliance of a modern day Tom Paine as he exposes the intentional and systematic destruction of America’s middle class by an alliance of political con artists and outlines a program to restore it. This is Hartmann at his best. Essential reading for those interested in restoring the institution that made America the envy of the world."
David C. Korten, author of The Great Turning and When Corporations Rule the World
From The Thom Hartmann Reader:
"With the ever-growing influence of corporate CEOs and their right-wing allies in all aspects of American life, Hartmann’s work is more relevant than ever. Throughout his career, Hartmann has spoken compellingly about the value of people-centered democracy and the challenges that millions of ordinary Americans face today as a result of a dogma dedicated to putting profit above all else. This collection is a rousing call for Americans to work together and put people first again."
Richard Trumka, President, AFL-CIO
From The Thom Hartmann Reader:
"Thom Hartmann channels the best of the American Founders with voice and pen. His deep attachment to a democratic civil society is just the medicine America needs."
Tom Hayden, author of The Long Sixties and director, Peace and Justice Resource Center.
