Jennifer Farmer, Advancement Project joins Thom. It's not just voter suppression ID laws that are threatening to block minority voters from casting votes - it's the polling lines themselves. A new report from the Center for Political and Economic Studies used data from the Cooperative Congressional Election Study to figure out which races of people have the longest average wait-times at polls. The report showed unsurprisingly that black voters aren't just being targeted with stringent voter ID laws that focus exclusively on the type of IDs that black Americans are less likely to have - they're waiting in line nearly twice as long as white voters at the polling places. But what factors are leading to such a disparity in terms of wait times at polling places?

Tim Mentz, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe joins Thom. After more than 1500 people joined with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline construction under the Missouri River - North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple issued an emergency declaration for southwest and south central North Dakota late last week. Dave Archambault II - who is Chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe responded with disappointment - writing in response that: "Tribal leaders are committed to non-violence and peaceful prayer as the guiding principle of Cannon Ball River camps. …. This is an opportunity to work together in a spirit of cooperation, and we should take advantage of that opportunity. But with all due respect, the Governor's declaration of emergency was unfortunate." And on Monday - North Dakota's homeland security director ordered that state-owned trailers and water tanks be removed from the protest campsite citing the risk of damage and reports of "unlawful activity." Those tanks have been the main drinking water supply for the protestors.

On Monday Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe moved to restore the individual voting rights of around 13,000 convicted felons. The move came after a Supreme Court ruling blocked an earlier order by McAulliffe that would have restored the voting rights of almost 200,000 felons - the majority of whom were African American and done their duty do society by serving out their sentences.

Aetna - which is the nation's third largest health insurance company joined United Healthcare and Humana in scaling back from the Obamacare state exchanges -when they announced on Monday that they would be withdrawing from 11 state health insurance exchanges. That same day - the Department of Justice blocked Aetna's request to merge with Humana - which seemed like more than a coincidence. And it was Huffington Post reporters uncovered a letter from July in which Aetna's CEO Mark Bertolini basically threatened the Justice Department, writing: "We believe it is very likely that we would need to leave the public exchange business entirely and plan for additional business efficiencies should our deal ultimately be blocked." Isn't this another argument for why we need to take the profit motive out of health care and offer a public option? Isn't this another aspect of the commons - like fire insurance and health care - that a government accountable to the people should manage?
