Rumble: The Sugar Industry Paid Scientists To Lie About Sugar & Heart Disease

Scott Greer, The Daily Caller & Sarah Badawi, Progressive Change Campaign Committee(PCCC) & Charles Sauer, The Market Institute joins Thom. According to a new report JAMA Internal Medicine published on Monday by ressearchers at the University of California, San Francisco the sugar industry paid scientists in the 1960s to play down links between sugar and heart disease - and to blame saturated fat instead. That report suggests that 50 years of research into the role of nutrition and heart disease have been heavily influenced by the sugar industry. The documents show that the Sugar Research Foundation - today known as the Sugar Association - paid three Harvard scientists the equivalent of about $50,000 to publish a review on sugar - fat and heart disease - using sources that the sugar industry had handpicked. Isn't it time that we require public policy to be shaped by research funded by the public - rather than research funded by trade groups with clear incentives that fly in the face of public interests?

Rumble: How Will Trump’s Paid Maternity Plan Sit w/The GOP?

Scott Greer, The Daily Caller & Sarah Badawi, Progressive Change Campaign Committee(PCCC) & Charles Sauer, The Market Institute joins Thom. Trump unrolled his plan for paid maternity leave during a campaign stop in Pennsylvania with his daughter Ivanka. And much like Ivanka's speech at the RNC in July - Trump's rhetoric sounded an awful lot like a Democrat’s. The main part of the plan is a change to the tax code that would allow families to deduct childcare expenses - and to allow mothers to receive unemployment benefits for six weeks paid for by "eliminating fraud in unemployment insurance" But is this plan for paid maternity leave going to sit with rank and file Republicans - or will Republicans rally behind this plan because it robs from unemployment insurance to help push women out of the workforce?

Bryan Pruitt, RedState & Mike Lux, Democracy Partners/The Progressive Revolution: How The Best In America Came To Be & Nathan Leamer, R Street Institute joins Thom. Politics Panel - The Dakota Access Pipeline - The Impact Of $21.4 Million Cars

Bryan Pruitt, RedState & Mike Lux, Democracy Partners/The Progressive Revolution: How The Best In America Came To Be & Nathan Leamer, R Street Institute joins Thom. The Obama administration may have temporarily halted construction on part of the Dakota Access pipeline - but the fight against the entire project is far from over. Today - rallies were held across the world to demand an end to the entire $3.8 billion project. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders even joined in on the action and spoke at a rally here in Washington, DC. The Dakota Access pipeline would have the same impact on the planet as $21.4 million cars. It would also pose a serious threat to the water supply along its entire 1170 mile route, not just on Standing Rock Sioux land. In what possible world is it a good idea?

How Does It Help America to Vilify Russia?

A fragile ceasefire is now in effect in Syria - where hundreds of thousands have died since a brutal civil war began in 2011. If this ceasefire leads to an end to that civil war - could it also lead to a thaw in US-Russia relations and prevent a new Cold War? More on that with the Nation's Katrina Vanden Heuvel.

Will “Basket of Deplorables” Haunt Hillary? Progressive Roundtable

Adele Stan, AlterNet & Joe Madison, The Joe Madison Show/SiriusXM Urban View join Thom. Clinton was in hot water over the weekend after she made these comments during a fundraiser Friday night. First of all - is this going to hurt her? The media has been comparing this to Mitt Romney's "47%" remark in 2012 - but are these really comparable statements? And aside from that - isn't this a pretty accurate assessment of Trump's supporters?

Is the NFL Moving Us To A New Form Of Patriotism? Progressive Roundtable

Adele Stan, AlterNet & Joe Madison, The Joe Madison Show/SiriusXM Urban View join Thom. The opening Sunday of the NFL season saw the protest movement started by San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick grow even bigger. Dozens of players around the league participated - some by refusing to stand during the national anthem - others b n e ing while it was being played - and still others by raising their fists in solidarity. The NFL is a pretty reactionary place - is the fact that this movement only appears to be growing a sign that our society is transforming in a pretty important way? Is it helping us move towards a new form of patriotism?

How Higher Education Is Being Folded Into the Libertarian Movement

Alex Kotch PhD, AlterNet, joins Thom. Since the 1980s - Charles Koch of the Koch brothers has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to colleges and universities all across the country. Between 2005 and 2014 alone he gave $108 million to almost 400 schools. The stated purpose of Koch's foray into the world of higher education - of course - is to promote free market ideas and policies. And while that's defensible enough - the apparent real purpose of this million dollar is a lot more sinister. Charles Koch and his right-wing oligarch allies - it seems - don't just want to promote their extremist ideology - they want to systematically transform American higher education into an arm of the libertarian movement. My next guest has dug deep into this story - and what he's found is terrifying.
