Yeah, President Obama has all the evidence, there's no reason to delay cancelling this destructive and dangerous project... but delay he will, because that's what Obama does! The guy has no spine. He cannot be counted on for anything. And now we hear that, according to “telliottmbamsc”, Hillary Clinton has declared a willingness to approve the Keystone XlL. As always, our public servants are here to serve us, looking out for our best interests! (Not.) - AIW
Chuckle 8, I think any Facebook community would necessarily be much less relevant to the world of affairs than the genuine article, the blog itself on the website itself. Facebook groups, even "open" ones, are, by their very nature and design, exclusive and cliquish - and thus, not impacting the world as much as would a more public forum on a more public website.
Some people like that, however, it helps them to feel distinguished. They don't wanna deal with those filthy masses anyway.
2950-10K ~ Well said! I can hardly disagree. Seriously, what would happen if another Republican President got into office? Another Democrat? About the same thing the way I see it. Another war? Maybe WWIII? Oh yeah. Maybe another conservative supreme court judge? Woo Hoo! Big friggin deal. What difference would that make,? Really? We are all warred out; and, anticonstitutionally worn out.
In my humble opinion, a third party is the only rational alternative--even if it is just to send a message to the Democratic party to get their shit together. The only problem that I have is that we need to decide on which third party we are all going to follow. There are lot's of possibilities floating around there. There is the Democratic Socialist Party who is sponsoring Senator Bernie Sanders, there is the Independent Party, there is the Green Party, and there is also the Peace and Freedom Party but to name a few.
Personally, I like the Democratic Socialist Party. However, it would be so easy to change from that to almost any other party than the Republican or Democratic that I would not consider my vote cast in stone just yet. Might I suggest that instead of bickering as to whether or not it would be prudent to cast our votes for a third party candidate ,we might discuss exactly which third party candidate is worthy of our votes. It seems to me that is the best way to pack the most in our upcoming political punches.
It just occurred to me that if someone was in need of a job capable of supporting a family, these days without having to earn a degree from a reputable academy, one might try to get a job in law-enforcement. Granted, it may not be the most suitable job for everyone, just as are occupations such as doctor, lawyer and politician. But, without the necessary credentials, there aren't too many options left IN THIS COUNTRY.
It's possible, the police officer who shot Brown, might not have been well suited enough to cope with the kinds of stresses the job occasionally imposes, thus making him more apt to overreact to situations like the one he had on that notorious day. Add to that, more perceived threats to one's personal well-being by our news and entertainment media (so-called "terrorism", runaway Climate Change and diseases), popular music (Rap) & video games (Grand Theft Auto), the creators of which are mostly, only reacting to "what the public wants", so as to meet their $profit$ goals.
Unfortunately, those depictions to which we're exposed to DO leave lasting impressions on our perception of the "world around us", and subsequently how we behave within it, which, in turn, often affects how those around us react to our behavior.
I don't know.... maybe we're just witnessing another significant transition in the evolution of the human species. (;P)
Remember chuckle, when you launder money, you do it in small amounts and spread it around. Thousands of banks putting 2 million on the books adds up. And 2 million alone in 1970 is worth more now, especially in a mutual fund.

But one quick detour into something which formed when Shamrock, Disney, and Central Soya merged in 1985:

A holding entity shields the relationship of the Carlyle Group and the energy and pipeline companies from the public. Kinder Morgan's online asset map shows KM owned all the pipelines which were supposed to belong partly to Dynegy, Enron, and the banks which loaned Enron money.
Following 9/11, "Keystone Advance Planning" and "Holding Keystone" were incorporated. Following the February fund raiser at Richard Kinder's house, which our Florida Governor attended, the subsequent incorporation of "Empire Hotel Partners," "BDM Properties," and a Swiss Bank in Costa Rica makes me wonder if the Carlyle Group actually severed their relations with the bin Ladens. It would have been impossible for their entangled enterprises in hotels, realty, nursing homes, and major construction projects to have been severed so quickly and readily, considering the length of mortgage bonds.
Leighmf, I believe I am a member of at least one Thom Hartmann listeners Facebook communities. I have membership pending in another, "closed" group - has only 100, no doubt impeccably proper, card holders. Very exclusive, like a country club. We'll see if you let this "white trash" in. I dare say your popo is badder than ours.
I try to be patient with people who honestly disagree with us. It's when they're patently dishonest that I lose patience - and even then I usually feel bad about it. This is, however, a place for us to let it all hang down. I certainly don't have problem with someone calling the Koch brothers the "Cock brothers".
I've been part of many online communities and the complaint that the debate gets too acrimonious is ALWAYS present and always proclaimed to be the activator of the impending doom and destruction of the community. Sometimes it's true and other times I think the claim is a bit gratuitous or exagerated. I think some people may have a need to self righteously and priggishly sniff, cast their noses skyward and reject the community, exiting post haste to to preserve their proprietary purity.
I've had it...... I'm voting for the Green Party from here on out!!!..... Hawkins for NY Gov.! The other day Thom mentioned something about Cuomo being a Conservative Dem. He's far worse than that, he's an austerity politics, anti union, anti public service jobs, Teabagger. He still buys into the fairy tale of trickle down.
I've said it before, we need to nationalize the energy sector. Energy is far too important to be left in the hands of unhinged Carbon Lords like the Kochs. If we can seize the assets of Drug Lords, we can surely seize the assets of the Carbon Lords as well. Science warns us that these out of control individuals are destroying the planet. That said, our representative government is now mandated by our constituition to step up and stop the crazy people before it's too late. I pretty sure promotion of the general welfare includes not destroying the god damn planet. If our government refuses, we need to end it, and replace it with one that will represent the vast majority.
leighmf -- Who is kitty carlyle? Is that another name for the Carlyle group?
Very interesting information, thanks.
I blamed the 2008 crash on the Commodities Modernization Act. It sounds like other factors may have been at work.
Larry Beinhart has correlated a weakrening in the economy due to cut of the top tax rate by Kennedy/Johnson.
$2,000,000 doesn't sound like much when American corporations have $2,000,000,000,000 sitting on the sidelines.
As Bernie and Thom keep saying the best weapon against all that wealth would be public financing of elections. That is, let us have an amendment that says money is not speech. With that amendment in place, we might be able to get a president to hyperbolically enforce the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.
Keystone reminds me so much of the crisis with GMO's--both are being sold to the public as panaceas: tar sands will give us energy independence (even though most oil will be exported), cheaper gas, and JOBS!! GMO's, their supporters tell us, comprise a critical element in feeding a hungry and ever-expanding population. Yet a closer look instantly reveals that extracting, transporting, and refining 'bitumen' is an energy sink hole fraught with danger at every step of the nefarious process. It has already destroyed hundreds of thousands of acres of boreal forests--the lungs of the earth and critial habitat for numerous species--and replaced them with devastated, lifeless landscapes. Prolific pollution poisons water sources for native peoples and wildlife. Why aren't the Canadians more up in arms? A few billionaires reap (unearned) fortunes, while they "socialize" or externalize the environmental costs onto the rest of us--including a huge increase in the planet-warming greenhouse gases, threats of pipeline spills, and the landscape destruction at the extraction site. "If they build it we will come!!"
Similarly GMO's benefit only Monsanto, Syngenta, and a few other mega-corporations, without increasing the food supply one whit. What biotech touts as a miracle of genetic wizzardry turns out to be mainly two induced traits--resistance to Round-up and an insinuated pesticide (Bt) that expresses itself in every cell of every plant--without knowledge of "unintended consequences." Rapidly mutating insects, "weeds", and diseases are rendering both traits increasingly ineffective as the immense monocrop landscapes provide perfect habitat for proliferation. Meanwhile our industrial agriculture behemoths flood the world with cheap (subsidized) exports, displacing masses of rural peasants from Haiti to Central america and Mexico, emptying out the countryside and flooding the cities with young men and women without job prospects--enter our criminally foolish "war on drugs" to create the "jobs" and the brutal gangs producing the torrent of hopeless refugees seeking better lives here. It's all connected. It all benefits the 1% at the expense of social and ecological health--time for radical changes.
The single most effective tool we have to stop Keystone is to switch from internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicles. It is counter-productive to complain about the horrible things the oil industry does, then drive to a gas station, fill your tank, and give them your money. As long as you demand their product, they will find a way to deliver it to you. They will kill your mother for money, so your whining about the environment falls on completely deaf ears.
EVs are affordable for all but the poorest of the poor. Used LEAFs and Volts can be bought for under $15K, and the cost of operating them is 20% that of ICE vehicles.
When you make the switch, you'll stop polluting the environment, you'll stop creating a need to fight wars over oil, and you'll stop funding your enemies.
Since the modern era of EVs started 3.5 years ago, over 220,000 plug-in cars have been sold. The growth rate surpasses that of hybrids. But we need to adopt this technology at a much faster rate. Those of you who believe in Thom Hartmann's message should be the first to stop buying oil products. Do it now!
I absolutely agree that the Keystone Pipeline would be an environmental disaster that should be denied on the basis of the findings of the Environmental Impact Studies that were completed. I also believe that the President should void all state granted powers of eminent domain for crude oil pipelines that cross state lines because these interstate commercial material conveyance systems are not public utilities in any sense and conflict with even President Bush's Executive Order 13406 of June, 23, 2006. I also suggest that every state in which a pipeline easement is granted a financial security should be required for the removal of the pipeline when it is finally abandoned and the easements subsequently vacated.
Then let's at least go back to 1968- once RFK was out of the loop Apartheid fluorished, Krupp was made into a privately held corporation, and the wheels of Bank Holding Company legislation ran us over.
I provide these details from personal experience, corporate records, bank charters, and genealogy, but references also seem to back up my "connections."
From Wiki- "From 1960 to 1983, 3.5 million non-white South Africans were removed from their homes, and forced into segregated neighbourhoods, in one of the largest mass removals in modern history.[8] Non-white political representation was abolished in 1970, and starting in that year black people were deprived of their citizenship, legally becoming citizens of one of ten tribally based self-governing homelands called bantustans, four of which became nominally independent states. The government segregated education, medical care, beaches, and other public services, and provided black people with services that were often inferior to those of white people.[9]""
In 1969 many banks were illegally invested in corporations of their directors and other banks. Example, from California, Bank of America sold stock in Continental Illinois (the Marshall Field/Sears Roebuck bank) in Chicago, secured by homestead real estate. Is that a mortgage?
Because we don't look past Reagan, it is not picked up that Bank of America and Continental Illinois were the same mob controlled bank. Specifically, Continental is now Bank of America.
This wreaked havoc in many New Deal investment portfolios. Lawyers had a field day with heirs who didn't have millions of dollars and half a lifetime to fight what happened. This allowed a major shift of wealth to the 1% who work inside the government, from those who inherited New Deal government securities.
Lawyers had for years been trying to undo the restrictions of the Investment and Securities Act of 1940. This they finally got around to with multi-bank holding company legislation which passed in 1970. Bingo, Penn-Central went bankrupt, then the biggest bankruptcy in US history while stockholders in the Florida East Coast RY who had been waiting 38 years for a settlement received $.30 on the dollar.
Penn-Central was also the biggest government bailout up to the day and it turns out the bailout money disappeared into Liechtenstein where it was out of U.S. jurisdiction. This dough became fodder for the BCCI scandal and the failure of First American Bank in Washington DC. NOW we are in the Reagan years.
When multi-bank holding company legislation was passed in 1970 banks all over the country were able to merge their illegal branches into holding companies. This included insurance funds, REITs, travel agencies, bank building companies, agricultural and industrial assets that were shuffled in the deck and redistributed through mergers into multi-banks under a top holder. It was a real sneak around the law, and as well banks were able to add a secret $2,000,000 to their bottom line unseen by anyone but those who read Annual Decisions of the Comptroller along with the actual authorized stock on the books of the corporation.
The rollback point is 1970 when Freddie Mac was created following Pres. Johnson's sale of Federal National Mortgage Securities (mostly purchased during the New Deal) to private parties.
Tell me that 1970 didn't come back on us in 2008.....
Now 45 investment years have passed since the big Penn-Central Bank clean-up. This is why there is a small class so far ahead of the world that they control commerce. Rolling back to the 1980's will not change the facts or who controls Kitty Carlyle.
leighmf -- I do not think most of us think it started with Reagan. I think we realize that Reagan brought us back to what the New Deal and the Great Society saved us from.
Leighmf -- I need to read your blogs more carefully (the blog, not the bloggers, very interesting)
I often see the bloggers ignoring Thom's (or whoever's) introductory paragraphs about the 10th comment.
For the very senior citizens amongst us who do not use facebook much, It would be interesting for you to bring summaries of what is happening on facebook to this blog.
UNC -- Let's take the UZI's and AK-47's out of the bank robber's hands. Vote democratic; especially, for those candidates who the NRA give 20% or less rating.
leighmf: Thanks for that link. Looks like something I would be very interested in reading! There is a whole history of the US that most people just don't realize happened. And, perhaps, they would be shocked. (maybe not) But for cognitive dissonance, they might have a totally new understanding of who they are and what our authorities have done to us.
Holy zits, Batman let's go for a ride in your Bat Mobile! Zowie, Zonk, Splat! @#!&* ouchie, I stubbed my toe. (Theory of Everything) By the way, there's a good movie called The Theory of Everything, about Stephen Hawkings coming out in our theaters soon.
Quote chuckle8:...our mission on the left is to make something happen when the pendulum is only at 7%.
Good luck with that! The unemployment rate in Ferguson is something like 25%. And while the Black population in Ferguson is something like 75%. I wonder what the unemployment rate of Blacks in Ferguson compared to whites in Ferguson is?
In Pre-revolutionary France, the Aristocracy refused to pay their taxes putting the burden over on people who had very little to give. I think that a comparison could be made with the US right now. It certainly is not as bad here as it was there and then. It was even worse than what we experienced in the US in the 20s and 30s and 40s. Actually, it went back to the later 19th century where people were barely squeezing out a living and working enough hours to kill them. I believe that it will eventually get much worse here. And when it does, there will be a hell of a lot of unrest in the US. Ferguson is just the beginning.
Since EPB Fiber is located at 10 W. M L King Blvd, right in the heart of Chattanooga, I suppose they would be servicing only the ones in the downtown zip code areas of 37402, 37403, 37404, and 37408 to begin with. Man, I'm envious! 1 Gbps at $24.99/ month! Drooling! Drooling!
Thank you, Alice and Mark, for explaining the Thom Hartmann Blog in such detail. I get it now. Now I know what to expect, and you have refreshed my knowledge of human nature. And I wouldn't dream of asking anyone to change their behavior- I'm not the PoPo. You can swear and blaspheme 24/7 and beat the King's English to a bloody pulp, jump all over people you don't know, whatever. You ARE doing a good job and pretty soon you'll have the place to yourselves.
What the Blog-controllers want is a monoculture, and by natural law, monocultures eventually collapse.
1. Some people will, at the Host's (TH) expense, jump out of their own blog window to try and scare away those who may take up space in the blog that they want for themselves .
2. Others decide to sit in judgment of who is a shill or a troll or a spy and institute their own enforcement tactics, like vigilantes.
3. Others put on the "tough cookie" routine and bring out their bullying tactics.
You have really put the Fear of God into me (oops) and taught me a good lesson.

John -- You do know that money was created for one purpose. That purpose was to collect taxes to pay for the commons.
The New Deal and the Great Society built the greatest economy the world has ever known. They created policies that worked in a capatilistic society.
The Lewis Powell memo shows how they destroyed that economy. It did not have much to do with cash.
leighmf -- I do not think most of us think it started with Reagan. I think we realize that Reagan brought us back to what the New Deal and the Great Society saved us from.
Thank you for the details of the global 1%.
Mark S -- I save more of your blogs on my local disc (in word format) than anyone else's. Thanks again.
With regards to typos, isn't that ability to edit an already posted blogs new?
Leighmf -- I need to read your blogs more carefully (the blog, not the bloggers, very interesting)
I often see the bloggers ignoring Thom's (or whoever's) introductory paragraphs about the 10th comment.
For the very senior citizens amongst us who do not use facebook much, It would be interesting for you to bring summaries of what is happening on facebook to this blog.
UNC -- Let's take the UZI's and AK-47's out of the bank robber's hands. Vote democratic; especially, for those candidates who the NRA give 20% or less rating.
canceled because of a double entry
leighmf: Thanks for that link.
Napoleon was really dynamite wasn't he? ;-}
Since EPB Fiber is located at 10 W.
Namaste
