    Bust those trusts!

Health care provided by greedy for-profit corporations??? Maybe there's a better way.

Anytime there is a monopoly, there is greed and everything else... right on down to deliberate waste. Shoot, look at Congress. Talk about waste... We pay their salaries and they take time off. We pay their medical, and they don't want the rest of us to ever be able to afford healthcare. We put their children through college, and they tell us not everyone needs to have a higher education. Does any of that make sense to any of you?

Thank you, AIW! Much appreciated. I occasionally watch Stephanie Miller. Didn't she used to be a right-wing radio host before she became a left-wing host?

I hear that Miller slammed Fiorina on birth control a couple of days ago...I missed it. In order to watch it on several of the known liberal web sites I would have to ok a number of scripts to run on my computer which I am not familiar with...many are just snoops or ads. So I tried finding the show on youtube and there seems to be a bit of trickery there in that if you search on Stephanie Miller Carly Fiorina there are a couple of videos that pretend to be what I'm looking for but what it is instead is a CNN talk show, without Stephanie Miller, and they are interviewing Carly Fiorina.

In the early 80's I was in a blues rock band with a guitarist who worked at a local organic food restaurant/co-op. It was the first time I'd ever heard of a worker cooperative, a business owned and managed by the workers. I was very impressed when he described the conditions etc. I often wonder why these worker co-ops haven't exploded across the country as push back to the Teapublican supported monopoly capitalism movement. It would no doubt make it harder for vulchers like Mitt to bogart all the hard earned wealth.

Henry Ford welcomed and enjoyed competition in the auto industry per haps because he was so good at it. Today even the auto industry is narrowing the field of competition by manufacturers mergers and acquisitions. It' just a matter of time until the big three become the only three worldwide

Excellent points, guys. I don't think there's much I can add that hasn't already been said. So I'll just say this sucks and it's dangerous, and leave it at that.

The only positive thing I can throw into the discussion is that my hubby and I have used just two of the many products Thom mentioned: Tide detergent and (much less frequently) Ivory soap. We all could eliminate processed food, sodas and cosmetics without suffering life-altering consequences. In fact, I'll even go so far as to say that eliminating that shit actually improves life. Just think of all the medical and dental bills you wouldn't have to pay! And all the money you'd save, not buying that crap.

This past January I completed an online course with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and became a certified health coach. And in Joshua Rosenthal's book is a marvelous quote by someone named Zemach Zohar who said: "Most people now begin realizing that they live in the matrix. What most people don't realize is that the matrix lives in them. Whenever we permit sodas, candy bars, junk food and cigarettes to enter our body, we're letting the energies and vibes of corporations, factories, offices, CEOs and executives into our very being. These are the active ingredients of the matrix." That pretty much says it all. - Aliceinwonderland

  • Does the Economy Serve Us or Them?   10 years 44 weeks ago

We need prohibit and break-up monopolies and the structural concentration of individual ownership that makes possible the same wealthy ownership class to acquire virtually all FUTURE wealth-creating, income-producing capital asset ownership. Three are ONLY TWO CHOICES: either OWN or Be Owned!!

Americans need to WAKE UP and support and rally for a peaceful and more just Second American Revolution to unite all Americans, based on a moral recognition that freedom and political democracy must be based on a foundation of universal principles of economic justice and economic empowerment.

The JUST Third Way is a radical overhaul of the economic system (i.e., the Federal tax system, Federal Reserve policy, inheritance law, welfare and entitlement system, etc.) that will achieve genuine economic democracy, based on the Platform of the Unite America Party and its links and the proposed Capital Homestead Act. Our Platform is a call for a vision of political economy that can unite the left and the right, based on Louis Kelso's ownership-based paradigm. Now is the time to cure America's political cancer (Crony Capitalism) and restore America to again becoming a model for global citizens in all countries.

I remember working briefly for Fleischmann's margarine in the late 80's. That company manufactured everything from Imperial Margarine to Blue Bonnet. I counted about 6 brands in all. All from the same machines and made with the same ingredients. As I remember almost every brand in the store. Then the factory mysteriously closed. I can only imagine that they got bought out by some bigger investor.

If you shop brand conscious you waste your money. I suggest buying the cheapest 'brand'. All you are really paying for is the package; and, you're going to throw that away anyway.

  • Does the Economy Serve Us or Them?   10 years 44 weeks ago

This is so ridiculous, Tom. This is basic stuff we learned in high school social studies, at least I did. The trouble is most people are too caught up in every day life to see what has been happening, and you don't see the media covering this. And the greedy politicians, all they do is ask for money -- they're even going out to the average citizen now since the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, and more recently McCutcheon. But as you pointed out, this has been going on for more than 30 years and I was as blind as most of the others out there. Is there anything we can do besides write and talk about it, because I don't think that's enough. And don't tell me to support different candidates because if they do go any place up the ladder, they are going to be bought and sold, and I don't care who they are, because that's how the current system works.

Probably the only way to make change, the kind of change that will matter and turn over the oligarchy, unfortunately, is revolution. But I see no charismatic leaders out there to lead one, and if one arises, you know they aren't be around very long.

  • Will it take more public outrage to get money out of politics?   10 years 44 weeks ago

Actually, my answer is no, this isn't going to happen. This isn't going to change. We were having this same discussion back when I was in school in the early 1970s. My grandfather participated in this same discussion back in the 1930s. What can we do about it? Demand change? Get really, really mad? Sign multiple petitions? No one is DC is listening because their careers depend on this system, which has worked so well for them.

  • Will it take more public outrage to get money out of politics?   10 years 44 weeks ago

Some of my past metaphoric comment rants about MoveToAmend :

... Government ideally would require right business behavior across the board. While we attack four or five single issues [leaves on the 'Bush of Evil'], the root is untouched and many more leaves are budding. MoveToAmend to amputate from the government the love of money, which is the root of all evil.

... [1] Save Biodiversity must be your aim and all efforts are tributary; you will need the government as your ally so [2] MOVEtoAMEND[.org] to make our many problems solvable; conservatives would rather Sell the Future so [3] vote Progressive and flush them.

... we might make our many problems solvable. [global warming even, and erosion, war profiteering, pollution, fossil fuel subsidy, job export and race to the bottom globalization, etc] Money is not speech, limit and reform campaigns, artificial entities must have Zero political activity. Then we the people own the government by majorities in each decision.

... "Therefore MOVEtoAMEND, and so make our many problems fixable. Until then there is a millionaire behind every smokestack and bad subsidy, war profiteers and wage thieves poisoning us and so on. Money is not speech [it is property]. Fictional entities [corporations, unions, businesses, Trade Associations, other] must have zero political activity; their human members have plenty. Free Speech for People etc., and One vote per person."

All single issues wait on this Amendment. Meanwhile there is a millionaire behind each smokestack. Examples come to mind : HVHF Fracking and Global Warming [fossil fuel is poisoned candy], wars for profit, petroleum/cotton/corn subsidies that ruin also poor countries [Indian farmer suicides pondered with _Nero's Guests_]], Monsanto and privatizing genomes and killing our Soil, farm antibiotic overuse, expensive campaigns and millionaire Senators, all-or-nothing non-proportional "Two-Party" scam]

And if there *is* Truth then shame on us generally for endless disagreement.

  • Is the mainstream media to blame for the do-nothing Congress?   10 years 44 weeks ago

I answered yes but "do nothing Congress " is not an accurate framing and anyone that uses the phrase contributes to the continuance of the malaise. Some will argue intransigence on the part of democrats but when I look at positions for which the congressional progressive caucus as well as many other dems dig in, the issues are about the betterment of the majority, jobs, health-care, compensation for work, the environment, etc yet we the majority continue to loose ground. We continue to loose ground because of framing, which influences participation in the democratic process, the framing "do nothing Congress" is just one example.

Yes Congress is failing to conduct the business of governance in our names but accurately Congress is unable to conduct governance due completely to the intransigence of the political wing of the uber class, the 1%ers. While they the so-called republicans would find it troublesome to act directly in the interest of the uber class, they remain largely successful by the misdirection of blocking and charging dems with unwillingness to compromise, nothing gets done. Then, as people with a voice continue to pronounce it "do nothing,", said enough it gains substance despite being factually inaccurate. An additional impact of voluntary disenfranchisement on the belief that one's institutions of governance are corrupt, or broken, or have nothing to do with me, which is the first step in a minority gaining hegemony under democracy, I.e., limit/reduce the pool of those who would participate meaning-vote.

  • Could John McCain be Responsible for the Next 9/11?   10 years 44 weeks ago

In fact, I believe that the seeds of 9/11 was even planned in 1962...it was called Operation Northwoods where the Joints Chiefs of Staff conjured up plans to crash a military plane, painted to look like an passenger airliner, into a tall building. This was meant to shock US citizens into being favorable to invading Cuba (which JFK wouldn't go along with...so he was terminated). Obviously, they didn't go through with that one. But it could very well have been that they finally went through with that idea on 9/11.

There was something, a pod(s), attached to the bottom of the planes that hit the WTC towers that are not normally on passenger airliners. Eyewitnesses testified to this and can also be seen in photos taken from the videos. Similar pods are, however, put onto military planes.

And there was also a strange flash near the nose when the planes hit the buildings. The nose of airliners are made of laminated fiber which can't explain why there was a bright flash as soon as the nose touched the buildings. It's a mystery. One likely cause is that it set off a charge that had been previously planted in the buildings. I can't say that this video evidence of a pod was attached to the underside of these planes or of the flash when the nose entered the buildings is any kind of hard evidence but they are anomalies that need to be investigated.

The whole 9/11 atrocity needs to be investigated by truly unbiased panels that aren't afraid of soiling their careers or threats of losing contracts and of people who can understand physics and science...not the right-wing clowns ilk of Popular Mechanics propaganda ill-repute.

The vertical beam angle cuts are shown and talked about at 28:00 minutes into the film.

And the video shows the scenes where Building 7 was being reported by both CNN and BBC to have already collapsed when it had not actually collapsed until about 20 minutes later. So, the cover story that had been released to the reporters about the WTC7, the Solomon Building, had been released too soon by people who knew the building was going to collapse (20 minutes or more before it did). In fact, you can see the building still standing when they reported that it had collapsed. OOPS! This is at about 32 minutes into the video.

And why is the FBI not allowing over 80 videos of the 9/11 attacks to be viewed by the American Public even to this day? They claim it is because of National Security. Yeah, right!

Here's a story about one of the major contractors in Iraq, Halliburton, who got paid to transport 82,000 gallons of fuel, using 10 trucks, for a distance of about 300 miles. In the US, a contractor said that they would charge about $3000. But if they were doing it for the government they would charge about 2 or 3 times that amount...lets say they charged $10,000. Halliburton charged the government $27.5 million to transport that fuel 300 miles in Iraq. What a taxpayer ripoff!!! And that is merely one example.

  • What West Virginia can learn from Sarah Palin   10 years 44 weeks ago

There is a great divide about what is fair for the citizens of States, and those who control the land by Ownership thereof, or the Ownership of large corporations which - as the Supreme Court has said - are people.

No one who already has money and power is going to be willing to share wealth with the poor of those States - the ones who are the walking dead due to bad Laws, bad representation, and bad work conditions.

It's so sad to me that those who have everything they could ever want to raise their own families, look at the working poor and the desperate, unemployed, and uneducated as a probable drain on their incomes. Many of those sacrificial lambs and sheep could be just as smart and just as well educated as those who Lord over their politics, their healthcare opportunities, and their well-being. But those people are also naive. They are kept naive purposely, because they are easier to manage. If they're told that voting for someone who could possibly make their living conditions better, then they're also told that it's all just an election time lie... and if they vote outside the box, they can lose their benefits or their jobs. The poor of West Virginia (for the most part) have no idea how long they have been purposely kept down. I'm not sure they would ever believe the truth, even if it was explained to them. If they had any idea of how much they're being controlled, they wouldn't be allowing their mountains to be leveled, and they would have demanded repariations after the coal ash made their drinking water unsafe for several weeks. They grumbled, they complained, but the coal ash is still being released into their streams, and they have to drink what's available.

I feel so sorry for those people. But until they get legislators who fight for THEIR right to be treated better, it isn't likely to happen.

  • Is the mainstream media to blame for the do-nothing Congress?   10 years 44 weeks ago

No, Boehner had declared when Obama was elected that the Republicans would focus on making Obama a "one-term president." When Obama was re-elected, this was updated to a vow to focus ONLY on obstructing everything that Obama tried to achieve -- and then blame Obama for it. For once, they kept their word. They have done this to the exclusion of doing the work that is vitally important toward addressing both our poverty crisis and repairing our damaged international relations. As for media, it's necessary to remember that they are corporate entities, and as such, reflect only the corporate point of view. I think I'm more concerned about the rightward drift of "progressive" media since Clinton, especially on socioeconomic issues (which define the quality of life in the US).

Why is Thom mentioning Ms Palin? She was 12 years old when Alaska's "Permanent Fund" became law.

Maybe I'm missing something but how does this policy help reduce global warming? By providing a cash incentive to the populace that votes on fracking, drilling in the wilderness, mining coal...it seems like this will increase the displacement of carbon from the ground to the atmosphere.
