Once people have had a taste of freedom and a decent life, they will not willingly revert to serfdom. if necessary, people will start another civil war, although I pray that will not be necessary.

No. We are waking up as a society to the injustices of our political and economic systems. This can indeed be seen by the Occupy Movements. We will fight for justice and equality rather then to become serfs and live in perpetual debt slavery. One way of defeating the banksters is to simply opt out. The system cannot run if we choose not to obey.

    Mr. Hartmann,

If I understand it correctly, JP Morgan is essentially bankrupt as of late 2011 so to kick his bankruptcy can down the street he steels form MF Global and since MF Global and JPM had brokered a massive deal together they knew MFG was also on the verge of its own bankruptcy. To make things worse before the MFG bankruptcy the Ceo Mr. Corzine ripped off the depositors that had restricted accounts. As we well know this is because I’m breaking this into sub-atomic particles this act is a single electron on the top of the mountain of bankster fraud recently executed on the world.

So my question is: Are there no other Attorney General’s like Eliot Spitzer (granted he had shortcomings) but he did his job! He prosecute many of the 1%er criminals known as the executives in the corporate scandals with tenacity beginning with Enron in 2001.

    Sincerely, Daryl Torres

    Thom,

A great clip that you played on your radio program today on Theodore Roosevelt’s 1913 speech for a Living Wage:

Teddy Roosevelt, 1913: We stand for a living wage

    http://www.bluestatepost.com/news_138.htm

Here is Theodore Roosevelt’s addressing all of the American Workers who can’t find a job, laid off American Workers; American Workers relegated to part-time employment for the lack of full-time employment, and discouraged American Worker who have given up looking for employment:

An excerpt from Theodore Roosevelt: The Rough Riders/An Autobiography:

"... his labor - was a perishable commodity; the labor of to-day - if not sold was a perishable commodity; the labor of to-day - if not sold to-day - was lost forever. Moreover, his labor was not like most commodities - a mere thing; it was part of a living, breathing human being."

The only thing "frightening and disgusting" is watching people who know nothing about science trying to gin up hysteria among the scientifically illiterate. It's like watching John Birchers shrieking about fluoride in the drinking water or bible-thumpers squaling about the HPV vaccine!

1:10 -Oh no! Not little bits of meat and fat removed from the bones! Anything but that! Where do these know-nothings think the other ground beef comes from?

1:27 -Yikes! The meat is removed by spinning it in a centifuge? This ignoramus probably doesn't know what a centrifuge is. The reason a centifuge is used to get those last shreds of meat off the bone is that the old-fashioned way was to try to cut them out with a knife -but that runs the risk of flaking off pieces of bone into the meat, which can be hazardous to someone eating a burger or meatloaf.

1:35 -Heaven forbid that ammonium hydroxide, a perfectly safe chemical in gas form be used to keep shredded meats from carrying e.coli -it's better to be poisoned with deadly bacteria than to use -GASP!- chemicals.

1:44 -The reason the boneless trimmings are more succeptible to e.coli is because each tiny piece of meat is exposed on all sides to the open air. A pound of these trimmings will have a vastly larger surface area (because it's made of smaller bits) than a pound of regular ground beef, which in turn has much more surface area than a 1-pound steak. That's why it's safe to eat a steak that's red in the middle (which is to say, rare) but not a hamburger or meatloaf.

1:49 -Ammonium hydroxide is not just like the household cleaner (ammonia) any more than hydrogen peroxide is just like water since both are composed of hydrogen and oxygen. Did this twit ever take basic chemistry in school?

It was bad enough when celebrity chef Jamie Oliver promoted this fraud, but watching Thom Hartmann jump on the bandwagon is pathetic. This video -featuring experts on microbiology and food science- debunks the pink slime hoax in detail:

What's next, joining Jenny McCarthy to spread lies about vaccines?

Don't forget to clean the 99% toilet screws with their toothbrushes, ya'll.

How about this- all contractors or day laborers on a residential property ask to use the bathroom at least once in the day. That way they will never know if the servants or work people are doing things with their tooth brushes.

Thank you mathboy, but one reaches a point where you have to accept as the truth, the right controls the agenda when they are IN power, as well as when they are NOT in power, as in majorities.

How many decades do we let the Dem leadership continue these behaviors, without demanding anything from them? They are participants in the same game guys. My heart breaks for my country, and for my grandchildrens' lives. Look at what we have wrought upon them. It is not helpful for progressives to ignore the participation in this broken government by the Democratic leadership. Rahm was right, " F the left, they'll always be there", but it's changing, it will take time, but ignoring the wrongs done by one side is not going to change the future.

It feels at once....more of the same ANNNNND tragically worse. I'm incredulous how this craziness can keep regurgitating throughout Washington. I'm not a Christian, but these people call themselves Christians?? Have they read ANYthing of Christ's teachings? Like that WONderful scene in Woody Allen's Annie Hall (I think) where Marshall McLuhan pops into a movie line and forcefully discredits some pompous jerk who's misquoting him, wouldn't it be cool if Christ could come back (awww c'mon, not for second coming reasons..) and just sit all the conservatives down and tell them what he realllly believes?

    Mathboy, who mentioned renting?

  • Daily Topics - Tuesday March 20th, 2012   13 years 18 weeks ago

Maxrot, the dream involves owning a home, rather than renting.

Oldcrone, the Democrats could stop leaning right if they had better PR. They need to learn how to get their message across to conservatives.

Aaron is right, you cannot change anything by pretending/ignoring one side of the same coin Thom. People are screaming for you to stop being as one sided as Cluster Fux is. It is not helpful to shut up those saying this is not one sided. The Dem party will NEVER stop their leaning to the right on every issue. Please, we KNOW what the GOP is doing, but they wouldn't be doing it without the Dems steppiing aside, and the POTUS cutting deals whereby we the people lose.

Obama just put through three more trade deals, but Thom did not mention one of them. Come on Thom.

Valetudinariously ugly. A valetudinarian is either someone that is very sick or someone too concerned with his health.

Progressives commentators commit malpractice every time they let anyone mention Social Security and, to a lesser extent, Medicare in the same breath with budget deficit. If SS were repealed tomorrow, it would make zero difference in the federal deficit because SS is fully funded by the FICA tax which would disappear with the program. Similarly, 60% of medicare funding comes from premiums paid by recipients and by dedicate taxes that would disappear if the program were repealed. The cost of Medicare to the general fund is actually less than the interest on the national debt!

Any attempt ot balance the budget by cutting back these programs is a blatent attempt to steal the trust funds which contain over-payments to these systems that were paid in over the last 30 years. Essentially a default on a debt our country owes to it's own citizens.

For a real look at the causes of the deficit, take 11 minutes to view this video: http://youtu.be/z3zB7uezBZ0

Perhaps the American Dream is having a home, education etc... But I think that's what the dream was interpreted to be by time of the New Deal. I think the real American Dream, the foundation of it is iterated in the Declaration of Independence with the line Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. On top of that, I believe that that Dream wasn't meant to be a Dream for America only, but for all people across the world.

I can see how having a home and a job could seem like the Dream, but that's only a Dream when you're reality is a Nightmare of impoverishment. Having a home shouldn't be a Dream, it should be a given in a free society. If you're dreaming of obtaining a home, I think you have that dream as a result of living in a Capitalist reality in which having anything is a trade off of either working slavishly or figuring out a way to con others out of money, maybe both. Something about it seems wrong to me, not sure what, but somehow it shouldn't be considered communism or socialism to provide for the least of us Water, Food and Shelter.

If we need to pay for necessities we may as well justify paying a charge to breathe air. I find it ironic that if one steals a product they will be provided shelter, food and water; however if you abide by the law, but don't have a job, you can live out on the street and hope you can find something to eat.

I think the Nov election will just decide how quickly we descend to serfdom; if one of the rethugs wins, it'll happen like a bullet through cheese.

Just finished watching some of Adam Curtis' documentaries. If anyone here wants to see how some of those in power have come to exercise their power over the last century I highly recommend looking them up on You Tube: The Living Dead; The Century of the Self; The Power of Nightmares; The Trap. These series span many of the policies and policy makers from the the time of WWI to present day. All are well worth the time to watch, and after watching them you can understand how Ryan can make the proposals he's making and believes he can get them through. The leaders of both the Left and Right have been playing a game of manipulating the masses for their gain, and as a result have done more to make a rigid social structure that is making upward social movement near impossible. Ryan's policies are more of a naked display of this arrogance masquerading as a way to improve the common man's life.

I just wanted to thank you, Thom!

I got a long distance call letting me know that you read part of my Mudflats blog piece on the air: http://www.themudflats.net/2012/03/19/will-alaska-be-at-risk-for-a-trayvon-martin-shooting/

While our "stand your ground" bill, HB 80 is still in committee, there is a ton of pressure being exerted by the NRA to get it through. They have been contacting their Alaska members, feeding them talking points and many of them have been emailing their legislators while The rest of us didn't even know about this particular bill (even those of us activist types because we've been focusing on the bills that are starving our schools, etc...) until an Anchorage prosecutor bucked his boss and testified at a AK Senate Judiciary hearing. That made the news.

My heart bleeds for Trayvon Martin's family. My14-yr-old daughter curled up next to me on couch last night and told me the whole thing made her want to cry...and then she told me how scared the bill made her (she's black) though the bigger danger up here would be victims of "Walking While Native." All I could do is tell her that it scared me too and I was going to do everything I could to let everyone know how bad this could be.

In many ways, the death of Trayvon Martin could end up saving the lives of many other minority youth and folks in general who would be out-fire-powered in a disagreement.

Thanks again, Thom, for calling attention to our issues in Alaska!

Linda Kellen Biegel (Oh, and it's pronounced "Beegal" like the dog! :-) )

P.S. The reason it took a long-distance call to let me know about this is because we no longer get your show in Alaska. The only Progressive Radio show we have left up here is Shannyn Moore and I sure hope we don't lose her!

Randi Rhodes is saying that the Florida law simply requires that you claim that you were afraid of the person you killed. And that encourages you to kill all witnesses too, since they might be able to claim that you weren't acting afraid. She also says that it has been used successfully to defend gang violence in court.

The Stand Your Ground Law needs to be repealed immediately.

I just tuned in and Thom is discussing the Florida gun bill. Thom just said he remembered a time when this was unthinkable.

I feel the same way about the POTUS taking the mantle of assassin of US citizens.

And it was unthinkable before Obama, wasn't it?

Is it progressive to accept the POTUS asasassinating his own people?

I think it is unthinkable right now.

The 1% have all the smallpox vaccine cornered...just in case.

But it's probably a moot point, since the climate is going to spin out of control sooner than most expect. At least the redneck deep south will get clobbered before it get us farther north. It's just God's way of saying how much he loves all you fundamentalist yahoos.

Yes. We're a nation of codependents with "Daddy issues" ... and just LOVE to be lied to. There's no other way to explain Fox News and Sarah Palin.
