Florida is a special place. They threw a hissy fit when Congress threatened to eliminate Medicare Advantage that provided gym memberships paid for by Medicare members who did not participate in the Advantage program. Then they applause laying off thousands of teachers, firemen, and police officers. Remember they are the ones who elected this Governor who was guilty of largest fraud scheme against Medicare in history. What a state.
IF we all get out there and keep telling with factual truth of what is happening --over & over & over again --we could have the same results as France. I know several right here in RED country that are angry and ready to make some big changes eliminating any who are blocking progress because of hearing the facts.
I know a way to fight Citizens United without a Constitutional Amendment. It's "Civiliter Mortuus" (Civil Death). It's the legal concept that allows States to prevent convicted felons from voting, or possessing firearms, or being lawyers, or working in certain professions. It allows the Federal government to prevent convicted felons from enjoying full Constitutional rights. Among the most important of those rights is that to can be taken from you is the right to life. The States and Feds can kill you if you're convicted of certain crimes.
Many corporations have been convicted of federal crimes. Many more would have been if the U.S. Dept. of Justice hadn't come up with the idea of "defered prosecution" that allows a felon corporation to escape conviction by paying a fine. That nonsense needs to stop! What the Justice Dept. could do is forbid corporate felons from spending money in political races (corporate free speach) or hiring lobbyists to enfluence legislation. Free speach is a constitutional right that can be taken from a convicted felon.
The Supreme Court said that corporations are persons. If they're persons they can be convicted of felonies and as convicted felons they can lose their right to free speach. How could the conservatives on the Court get around that stumbling block to the corporate theft of our democracy?
(An interesting aside is that the Colt arms corporation pled guilty to a felony over 30 years ago for cheating the Federal government. That created a problem because they couldn't legal possess firearms. Congress rushed through an exception to the federal firearms laws concerning concerning convicted felons--of course Colt got the exception. But any convicted felon can apply for the exception to the rule that prevents them from possessing firearms.)
I only heard part of the discussion by the person who decried the influx foreign nurses and suggested an across the board lower level of skills. I believe that the nursing profession has the normal bell shaped curve for competence across all cultural backgrounds. If you look at one end of the curve it is easy to see significant difference from the norm. I have not seen research that supports the notion that the Midwest has faster turnaround in the critical care units. I am a 30 year + west coast RN and am familiar with the research that says higher RN staffing levels (nursing hours per patient days [hours]) results in faster patient response/recovery. California does have the highest mandated nursing ratios codified in the regulations. I reject his notion that the cultural backgrounds of the nurses imply less competent nursing skills. I don’t know if this comes from the tendency of nurses to “eat their own” the horizontal attack of peers in an oppressed group. I worked as an evaluator who investigated tragic and untoward events in hospitals and other health facilities. Nurses from all backgrounds are involved in mistakes which result in significant morbidity and mortality which are great tragedies. I do believe that cultural backgrounds can influence the way in which nurses respond to authority and seem to be less likely to assume the mantle of autonomous function and to confront authority figures; doctors, administrators. Many of the Registered Nurses of my generation with professional training have been encouraged to be more assertive and to stand up for their own professional evaluations and knowledge base. I believe that many nurses train in paternalistic institutions which expect the nurses to do what they are told. Administrators and doctors love those who do what they are told without question.
How about flogging a woman in 2011 for "insulting" a male president in her blog???
"Somayeh Tohidlou, political activist and Tehran University Ph.D. student in Sociology, wrote in her blog yesterday that authorities at Evin Prison carried out her sentence of 50 lashes. The flogging took place at Evin Prison just as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took off for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly."
... and not one word in US press ----- silence. With Mr. A. himself in town.....
I'm Caucasian and my husband is Asian/Pacific Islander, and our son is exactly half of each. Yet when we have to choose a race on documents, what are we supposed to put? He's no more one race than another. When others fill out forms, they never put Caucasian for my son. I think it's inherently racist to assume that in order to be considered Caucasian/White you need to be 100% Caucasian because anything else taints the purity of the Whiteness.
By the way, my 11 year old son says he's half Black since my husband's skin is so brown. So we're all mixed up.
I remember an episode of some 60's TV show (I could have sworn it was That Girl, but that can't be right) where the stewardesses on a flight notice a gun in a shoulder holster on one of the passengers. Since they're worried about the plane being hijacked to Cuba or something, they manage to lure him somewhere and tie him up. Then he explains that he's actually a U.S. Marshal there to protect people, and that he obviously needn't worry, with a flight crew like theirs around. The episode may have been written to counter a stereotype, but the stereotype was never actually mentioned. It's amazing that a show that actually aired over 40 years ago was less sexist than what we have now.
re: Republican women being more attractive on those emails:
They always show Democratic females, especially older ones who don't wear any or a lot of makeup or a woman making a face, while they show professional photos of a handful of attractive conservative women who are heavily made up and posed for a photo shoot.
Anyone who gets one of those emails should respond to the sender with a request to see the Fox chicks in the morning after they wake up and before the fake hair, eyelashes and makeup are applied.
This looks like a great time for my union pension fund to step up, hedge their bets, and finally make some money for a change. If only they would follow the banks investing strategies all of us members would benefit far more than we are now. I still cannot find out how all my monthly dues are distributed. Much information seems to be protected.
Thom, you fall into the trap that the right wing Christians set up regarding "the unborn". Right-wing Christian Republicans may claim to be "pro-life" and care so much for the unborn, which weirdly includes unfertilized eggs, but how many of these same people think that poor pregnant women and girls deserve pregnancy care? How many of these people are all for programs like WIC? It's the LIBERALS who care about the unborn and, more importantly, the already born babies, children and adults. At the same time, liberals don't believe in forcing people to do things with their bodies that they don't want to do and so are all for access to health care, access to birth control, and information about how to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Liberals are the ones are willing to spend tax dollars helping babies and children have decent lives; conservatives are not. They are merely pro-birth, not pro-life.
Sharon Angle, who considers herself so "pro-life" that she thinks little girls should be forced to have their daddy's rape babies, was appalled at the idea that she should pay into an insurance system in which preganant females received medical care since SHE was no longer going to ever get pregnant. Mike Huckabee, also rabidly anti-choice, was enraged and gave a speech denouncing "Obamacare" on the day that the provision that very sick children were eligible for health insurance without requiring their parents to go broke to get it. These are not people who care about the unborn or about actual children. If people really care about fetuses and embryos, they need to open their eyes about who they are supporting and what they really stand for.
That song goes a long way in describing what its like to make a median income or less. It talks about the oppression of the wealthy on the poor. One of my favorite lines in it is "There's room at the top they're telling you still, but first you must learn to smile while you kill". Obviously Lennon saw things as they were and are.
Having these hysterical liars on the show detracts from the quality of the show. They have most of the media to lie on, and when they insult Mr. Hartmann, I either turn off the show or turn the sound down. Please, we don't need to hear these people. Why do this to us? These guests will not be converted by appearing on the show.
Peter is losing it already, just a few minutes into his interview. Peter is calling Thom a liar? Where is his counter facts that can be looked up then?
Kind of a juvenile way to debate too, just call your opponent a liar, and scream it louder and louder. I find it hard to take anything Mr Ferrara says as having any value, though I can see why the right finds him good as gold.
Here in Kansas (Brownbackistan), we are seeing similar dynamics. Brownback is a fundamentalist/Catholic and close friend of Rick Perry, and you can see what kind of Republitopia they are building in Texas: a post-modern feudal state. They have a mindset that goes back to Madison and Hamilton, Machiavelli, and even Plato. Republicanism is about elite rule, and in America it has been about managed democracy, which became ever more managerial in the past thirty years as we behold the new corporate regime.
The bottom line is that republicanism is anti-populism. Any group like the tea party, working with Republican dogma, is being duped. Middle class people will always be squashed by right-wing policies, and if you give them too much rope they'll hang you while praising God.
What we are seeing now is the rise of governor-dictators. They aren't above cheating in elections -- the ends justify the means -- and they have no concern for science, "social justice," or government. They just want to privatize everything, which means make a profit off of you. And Bush showed us that the American dream is now world conquest by hook or crook. And here come the fundamentalists-in-tow, hoping the GOP will "obey God." Maybe they will...in the same way Hitler did.
My extensive collection of scientific, historical and genealogical data illustrates this wicked generation under discussion was spawned of occult heresies, employment of vile witchcrafts, unnatural rites and practices, lengthy journeys into mysticisms for obtaining powers, insider thievery of the Treasury, massive networked patent and trademark lies, and the spilling of innocent blood.

In fact, someone should see if there is still a skull inside Grant's tomb.
"Psychopath" is too soft a word for their case. It is called Scottish Rite, whereby our "subjects" evolved into a functionally insane faction of the cult.
The insane faction has existed here in the financial community since at least 1890:
1890: Commenced business in U.S.: Caledonian Insurance Co of Edinburgh, U.S. Branch, 555 Asylum Street, Hartford, CT
1890: The Lincoln National Bank, Washington, DC chartered
The Pre-scott Bush State produced the Scott Walker hybrid. As for Rick Scott, he's just another Dick.
As a clinical psychologist who teaches about such matters, I must respectfully disagree with Thom's characterization of the cheering Republican audience as psychopathic.
As Thom stated, there is indeed some evidence that Wall Street is populated by a disproportionate number of persons who could be characterized as psychopathic (as defined by Robert Hare, the psychologist who pioneered the study of psychopathy). Just yesterday ThinkProgress reported on a stock trader who dreams longingly of another recession as an opportunity to make money, utterly indifferent to its social consequences.
That Republican audience is better understood as exemplifying the authoritarian personality style, as studied by Canadian psychologist Robert Altemeyer. (His work was cited extensively in John Dean's book, "Conservatives Without Conscience.")
Authoritarian followers do not meet the criteria for psychopathology. Their apparent lack of compassion for others -- be these deathrow inmates, persons without health insurance, or gay soldiers -- stems not from the biological incapacity for empathy characteristic of psychopaths, but rather from the harsh, rigid value judgments that distinguish between "us" (those who conform to the accepted norm) and "them" (those who differ in some respect).
Unlike the indifferent lack of concern for others displayed by true psychopaths, these authoritarian followers are actually very passionate. (It's very doubtful that a true psychopath ever would shout out the way we observed during the debates.)
Frankly, inasmuch as the evidence suggests that a neurological deficit underlies psychopathy, the callous disregard for others displayed by authoritarians is perhaps more egregious.
I suggest that Messrs. Santorum and Perry consider a much more DIRECT method of ridding society of the "predators" or "takers" - or whatever pejorative the comfortable choose to condemn the needy - the homeless, those unable to function and earn a living, the lame, etc. Take a page from Vlad Dracula - 15th Century inspiration for the entertainment version.
He decided to round up all the beggars he could find - the lame, the halt and the homeless - and invited them to a grand feast. Once they were good and drunk (and had eaten a lovely meal), he set fire to the hall, immolating every last one of them.
We're not very far away from VLAD when people will APPLAUD at the notion of letting someone die who doesn't have health insurance, or being put to death on death row.
Maybe Ayn Rand and Atlas Shrugged has been dumped in favor of more effective methods a la VLAD.
I'm thinking of Perry and these "Tea Baggers" as THE AMERICAN TALIBAN--political/religious extremists bent on taking over our society and government. Yahoo had an article by Morgan Freeman calling the Tea Party "rascists". They're more than that: Their war against the poor, the middle class and the social/physical infrastructure that supports that society and the Marketplace they seem to worship make them downright un-American. Thom used the term "sociopaths" on the radio show this morning; I think its the same kind of group insanity that grips people in various dictatorships that cheer The Leader and participate in atrocities. It's that rascist anti-social mentality that seems to lurk just below the surface of the Conservative viewpoint.
