I voted no because i am currently reading Howard Zinn's Peoples History and it is fresh in my mind how much the working class had to go through to effect change the last time we were in this situation. We're not even close.

I regretfully voted that they won't tax the oligarchs, though I strongly hope that they do. I want to be so wrong, so wrong it will be like a new dawn for our country.

It's more than disheartening to read your closing sentance, Thom. Hope is no longer in the cards - we need to make them understand with our actions. We need to hit the streets in massive numbers!!

Majority rejects Obama's jobs plan in Bloomberg poll

    Rick Moran

    September 14, 2011

// // By 51-40%, the American people don't think the president's "jobs plan" will bring down unemployment.

That's the result found in a Bloomberg poll that also showed significant erosion of the president's core support from 2008:

A majority of Americans don't believe President Barack Obama's $447 billion jobs plan will help lower the unemployment rate, skepticism he must overcome as he presses Congress for action and positions himself for re- election.

The downbeat assessment of the American Jobs Act reflects a growing and broad sense of dissatisfaction with the president. Americans disapprove of his handling of the economy by 62 percent to 33 percent, a Bloomberg National Poll conducted Sept. 9-12 shows. The disapproval number represents a nine point increase from six months ago.

The president's job approval rating also stands at the lowest of his presidency -- 45 percent. That rating is driven down in part by a majority of independents, 53 percent, who disapprove of his performance.

    [...]

Of the respondents who said they've supported Obama at one point since he launched his presidential campaign in 2007, fewer than half say they still support him as fervently. Thirty- seven percent say their support has waned and 19 percent say he lost their backing because they've grown disappointed or angry with his leadership.

Almost a third of Democrats and Democratic-leaning respondents say they'd like to see Obama face a primary challenge.

The job performance areas where Obama scores favorably are his handling of the situation in Libya and fighting terrorism. Another rare bright spot in the poll is his favorability rating, which stands at 50 percent and is better than all of his prospective Republican rivals. House Speaker John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, has a favorability rating of 33 percent compared to 38 percent who view him unfavorably, a ten point jump from June before the debt ceiling standoff in August.

There's a downside to his favorability rating as well; 47% do not have a favorable opinion of the president. That is an extremely high unfavorability number and it shows just how polarizing this president has become.

Does Ron Paul seriously think that any rise of people out of poverty has nothing to do with existing welfare programs?

His rhetorical plan here has to be that if something is right with the way things work, he'll just conveniently forget that there's a ~socialist~ program in place to cause just that, and use the outcome as evidence that there doesn't need to be such a program.

  • Why Republicans may throw their support behind the President’s job plan...   13 years 48 weeks ago

Yes I agree with you but I can say from my point of view that the any republican can support behind the president’s plan. But in this the main thing is that an economist is warning to the presidents. Now it has become a very ideological issue so it soon to be rectified.

There is a man on death row in Texas for the kidnaping and murder of a young woman. The evidence? He was seen talking to her in a college library the day she disappeared.

He was arrested and charged. Her body was found several weeks later in an area that had already been searched, and forensics determined that she had been dead for less than a week when found.

What's wrong with this picture? The defendant was in jail when the murder occurred.

Texas doesn't want to review the forensics. They have a guy all lined up to satisfy Gov. Perry's death jones.

When Social Security starts redeeming its treasury notes from the trust fund, the money will either be paid by current revenue - in which case the national debt goes down, or treasury will sell new treasury bills to fund it - in which case the national debt stays exactly the same since they will be swapping old debt for new.

The only way that it could occur that Treasury can't redeem Social Security's treasury notes is if we are already in default and can't sell any treasury bills - in which case our national debt is moot and the economy has been destroyed.

To the caller who was a victim of a crime and uses that as justification of the death penalty, I have to ask... how does putting you're attacker to death benefit you in any physical way? It doesn't take away your seizures, it doesn't get you out of a wheelchair, it doesn't give you your previous life back, it just doesn't. All it does is give you satisfaction that someone who did you wrong was punished as you desired them to be. But if violence is so horrid, then why is it OK for the government to kill? Why is it alright to kill prisoners and citizens of other countries when heads of government can't agree to get along?

Vengeance seems to be an adequate justification to people, but what if I felt that someone personally wronged me, maybe a boss that fired me without cause and then my wife and family left me, that certainly doesn't justify me as a typical citizen to do violence to my ex-boss. There are alternatives to violent reprisals, even if those alternatives don't fulfill one's personal sense of justice.

I really don't believe that Obama will not compromise on his Jobs Bill, in fact I assume he will accept more tax cuts and give up on the other aspects of the bill. I don't know if he's planned it all along, or is just naive enough still to think he's going to get support from the majority of voting Americans when he does do it, but either way I completely expect he that he will compromise to his detriment. I seriously doubt he's going to get much campaign donations from Wall Street this time round either, but who knows, the banksters have been doing awfully well under him.

Buying USA is a MAJOR security issue. The last time I checked, a few years ago, one couldn't even buy a computer that was completely made from parts manufacturered in the USA! In fact, I believe that almost all of the moniitors that are currently being used are made in Taiwan.

These hardcore right-wing tea-partiers (the ones who called for the hypothetical coma victim to die and cheered when Rick Perry's execution record was announced) are the same people who bought and sold the "death panel" lie when Obama Care was under consideration...no?

    Tired of hypocrisy.

  • Transcript: Thom Hartmann: The Big Picture: Exposed... Phil Gramm's & Rick Perry's looming mega crisis. 15 August '11   13 years 49 weeks ago

You say, quite rightly, that most people won't know who Phil Gramm is. So why is it that 24 hour news networks spend 3 weeks talking about Britney Spears buttcrack, but don't spend 3 minutes on the architect of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression? Congress isn't the only institution which is short-changing America. The press is doing a lousy job keeping Americans informed.

Democrats provide a good distraction to ever corporate-state usefully prevent necessary systemic changes from occurring; Democrats are good at being devious; Democrats are good deceivers; Democrats are good liars; Democrats are good at gathering corporate campaign contributions; Democrat voters are most particularly good at self-delusion, self-gratification and their wholly undeserved self-congratulation... but there are no good Democrats.

The self-obsessed narcissistic Boomer liberals unrelentingly proudly display their self-contentment in their having life-long (D) supported reforms (new paint over old rot) to prevent any and every needed systemic change that might have possibly inconvenienced them. Their decades of corporate party (D) faction wrongly directly change prevention activism is why all our children now face a futureless future.

The Democrat faction of the corporate party ensured that there would be no viable political alternative to oppose their corporate-state militarist expansionism, their ruthless global economic exploitation, and their unsustainable ever increasing extraction based consumer culture.

There are no good Democrats. There never were any good Democrats.

Facism is more closely related to social democracy, since both are corporatist. It seems to me, that the "tea party" would be the opposite of corporatist.

One out of six currently living in poverty. Hey Rick, Mitt, is this mission accomplished or just a bunch of healthy, young, but lazy people looking for a free ride? I think I already know what's in your little heads.

Hardly a word mentioned by the mainstream media about the republicans blocking disaster relief funds. I wonder how this would play if the democrats were doing the blocking?

I have to run now...still have one of those rare things called a job!

What is the basis for our reticence in calling Republicans fascists? I can see avoiding the word Nazi. But why avoid fascist? These people are, demonstrably, fascists in their political and economic goals.

So, barring terms that are not available to us for historical reasons, what should we call this group of sadistic fascists? Funny how the terms run hand in hand, sadistic fascist; each begats the other.

If our country is headed for a coup then so be it. We could, in that way, advance our history in a few short months to that which might otherwise take years of slow change. It would be interesting to see and hear the reactions of those who had previously supported the military upon finding that the military had risen to wrest political control from their beloved tea party. It would be an exercise of the right against the right. The loyal opposition, us, would win simply by doing nothing beyond handing out bandaids.

Infighting is like inbreeding. All we have to do is wait it out.
