The super-rich can completely change the course of this national debt. Just raising taxes on the top 1% by only 2 percentage points resulted in an estimated federal revenue increase of OVER $800 BILLION over 10 years. Now, do the math for what raising it to pre-Regan levels would be...instead of 2 percentage point increase, we are now talking about a 35 percentage point increase (from about 35% to 70%). That is about 12.5 times MORE REVENUE. What is 12.5 x $800 BILLION? It is $10 TRILLION!!! Now that would put a dent in our national debt, wouldn't it?
Oh? You're concerned about the terrible pain that would inflict on the super rich? Let's see, right now they are, as a group, paying only 17% in taxes on their over $10 MILLION dollars of income per year (because of all the loop-holes they can afford to hire tax attorneys to find). That leaves them with, $8,700,000 PER YEAR to play with. So now, if they REALLY pay 70%, then they get to play with $3,000,000 per year. OH NO! ONLY $3,000,000 / year to LIVE ON! OMG!! HOW COMPLETELY HORRIBLE!!!
Right. Quite whining you greedy capitalistic pigs!
Oh, and at one point, their tax rate was actually at 90%, back when we had a strong economy and the middle class was doing the best ever. So much for trickle-down economics. I think it was a wolf in sheeps clothing - actually implemented trickle-up wealth building!
And Puerto Rico (yes, Puerto Rico) had tornados and hail on Saturday. St. Croix had 10 inches of rain since Wednesday and it is still raining. We normally don't have this kind of rain in May.
Note, this may end up as a double post. My first save did not appear as a reply.
Maybe we should force these non-believers to build their bunkers within their nuke plants or on their deep-water drilling rigs, hehe. Then they can suffer when they create the disasters.
Not only is the rain affecting the Mississippi watershed. Here in Vermont, it has just been reported today that we have exceeded the alltime record spring rainfall. And that is before the end of May. Lake Champlain is at an alltime record high level and flooding many homes and camps on its shore.
Maybe Mother Nature will come up with bunker-buster storms to get back at those who were most responsible for maximizing their short term gains by maximizing world pollution....like Mega tornadoes that drill down and extract the Koch-roaches from their lairs. Or maybe massive storms that emulate what happened in Japan...but only thousands of times worse..(we nearly had a storm related nuke catastrophe in the South-eastern US recently).
The half-life of radioactive plutonium is hundreds of thousands of years....even the wealthy elite Koch-roaches would not be able to last long. When their "shelters" became prisons they would be sorry they thought that amassing wealth by any means was better than being beneficent to their fellow citizens. Of course, unfortunately, under such cataclysms, all life on earth would cease to exist.
We'll all end up paying dearly for what a few selfish people are doing. The wealthy elite bunker survivalists still have the "duck and cover" mentality that was drilled in to us all by Walt Disney's "Duck and Cover" propaganda films of the 50s and 60s. Fact is if anything so disastrous as a nuclear holocaust (by war or by accidents), or world-wide destruction by massive weather changes, or even a complete economic breakdown such that people are dying off from starvation and disease then life would not be worth living anyway. When that happens, even the wealthy ruling elite would no longer find that their much cherished status is worth anything. There would be no one to serve them. And the viral diseases that would develop would not be stopped for long by a bunker.
But then again..hoping that something terrible would happen to make the wealthy pay for their crimes is just about as ridiculous as believing in "rich men going to heaven when they can pass through the eye of a needle"...and that the poor will get their rewards after they get to heaven. The wealthy love that kind of thinking because it lets them get away with everything.

Thom, I'm growing quite tired of your now-consistent knee-jerk dismissals of anything anyone finds some way to call a "conspiracy theory." Super-effective ops such as the Strauss-Kahn set-up have this very much in mind going in.. they surely concluded with great certainty beforehand that even if this guy eventually clears his name fully, their intended effect has gone in place.
It's not just Sarkozy that would have motive. What is it with your pattern of phrasing it "okay.. so this is THE conspiracy theory.." there are scads of possibilities, and the evidence is quite flimsy, so many of them should be considered:

I said, ‘Oh, my God, I have really been misled at a very deep level.’ And the same is true for Dennis Ross and the other neo-imperial elites. I said, ‘I have been thoroughly misled, all this populist language is just a facade. I was under the impression that he might bring in the voices of brother Joseph Stiglitz and brother Paul Krugman. I figured, OK, given the structure of constraints of the capitalist democratic procedure that’s probably the best he could do. But at least he would have some voices concerned about working people, dealing with issues of jobs and downsizing and banks, some semblance of democratic accountability for Wall Street oligarchs and corporate plutocrats who are just running amuck. Colonialism provides access to young "exotic" (from a Euro-centric perspective) girls (and boys).
What we call greed is very often, in actuality, a realted sin: lust. The failure of contemporary marriage, of contemporary economics, of contemporary society as a whole can, in part, be traced to the insufferably destructive urge to immerse oneself in the blind, ego-driven selfishness of lust.... which leads to the dead opposite of a healthy, respectful, creative sexual culture.

Yes Thom and the sad thing is, we are financing the takeover. You see, it is one thing to give oil subsidies in the Bush Cheney energy plan. But the kicker in the Bush Cheney energy plan was that the CEOs of the gas industry are now subservient to Wall Street, no matter what they do as a Corp., or an industry they cannot stabilize their market they cannot control their market, volatility is mandatory and Wall Street is going get there. 30% cut, and the taxpayer is on the hook they have had to borrow every dime paid to the oil lobby and pay interest on it for over seven years. We do not want these guys privatizing social security and Medicare. These guys break things and want credit for fixing them. They are self-serving destructive insurgent forces and our economy.
Their plan is to re-write history. The Koch brothers as well as many of the higher affluent have realized the place to start making your mark is at the University level. They are even going back to private High Schools in full form. I returned to the University of WA.in my later years to finish my degree. I was actually quite amazed how many young students fresh out of what one can presume to be some private high school completely disagreed with the Global Health professors who talked about Climate Change. They were set in their ideology long before attending the University. I sat next to one student in particular who whispered to me after the Professor had been talking about the receding glaciers and ocean current changes (this student had vocally disagreed). She leaned over to me and said "my dad told me that I would be going to a liberal school and that I should not believe a word". In my opinion, the conservative 'Neo-Liberalism' Ideolgies are driven in before it even hits the University. But just in case, the extremely wealthy want to cross their T's and want to be the ones who change history. Wasn't it European history books that talked about how the soliders in this country gave the indians small pox in peace blankets in order to advance and take over. I am not sure that was in any of our American history books growing up. They are rewriting history as we know it....and to what end?
Just a reminder, Thom, as I've heard you say this MANY times. When I attended the University of California at Irvine 1971-1975, my tuition was $636 per year. When my brother graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1965, the tuition was around $220 per year. When my mother graduated from UCLA in 1940, the fees (this was pre-tuition) were around $35 annually. I do believe that when my grandmother graduated from UC Berkeley in 1901, tuition was free. It's now over $11,000 per year. So when you say the UC was free - it was for my grandmother and her 10 siblings, all Cal Bears, but not for subsequent generations. The difference, however, between $636 35 years ago and more than $11,000 now with respect to the ability of a student to put him or herself through college is enormous, and those figures do not include living expenses! We graduated debt-free. That is a much steeper hill to climb for UC students today.
The point of state univerities and colleges was always that anyone who qualified would be admitted. Now the provisos must be added that the student may not get into the campus of choice, and may face onerous debt upon completion of hir or her undergraduate education.
Stop being unrealistic. Think for a moment in your life. If there really was god as you believe, why would he or she allow for the huge inequalities exist in the world, or why would he or she make us so full of bad qualities that makes us exploit each other? why? why? why? Start with questioning, then you will find revelation. Don't look for it in some set of legends and fairy-tails.

Maybe we should force these non-believers to build their bunkers within their nuke plants or on their deep-water drilling rigs, hehe. Then they can suffer when they create the disasters.
On where to put said bunkers: a short list
1. Permissible in the exclusion zones of a nuclear power plant.
2. Permissible anywhere along the Mighty Mississippi lowlands in Cancer Alley
3. Permissible in any city center so long as marked as such with the name and phone number of the owner.
4. Greater industrial Detroit, Hammond Ind, etc. for those with a fondness for true desolation
5. Any place you can get one to fit where the sun don't shine...
Not only is the rain affecting the Mississippi watershed. Here in Vermont, it has just been reported today that we have exceeded the alltime record spring rainfall. And that is before the end of May. Lake Champlain is at an alltime record high level and flooding many homes and camps on its shore.

Sex as the point of Power
.....
I think the great unspoken truth about what drives men (mostly) to acquire excessive wealth and power is access to unlimited sex and unlimited sexual submissives. For this purpose, a private island in Dubai serves very well. The "Family Man" image is misinterpreted even by us, the close observers. It was never meant to imply male loyalty. It is meant to indicate complete male control of the "breeder female", demonstrate her obedience, her guarantee of fidelity, thereby assuring the "purity" of "The Family Man's" stock.
Among barbarians, the powerful man is expected to exhibit an enhanced libido and extravagant sexual tastes as proof of his prowess as a leader of Men. About empowering women
Hi Thom,
We have a mutual friend, Anne Perrah. You wrote about her in your book The Edison Gene, see: http://www.preciouschild.net/excerpt.html
Anne is involved in a new project promoting the empowerment of women. She is part of a traveling stage presentation called "We Did It For You -- Women's Journey Through History"
I'm always amazed at how most young women take our rights for granted have no appreciation of the struggles our foremothers went through. In a time when people in power are trying to reverse our progress and re-write history, what's better than show that entertains and teaches real history?
The women involved in this project want to bring their presentation to Washington D.C. If you know anyone who can help them achieve this goal please contact Anne or Thea Iberall, playwrite of "We Did It For You." I'm sending their contact information in a separate email to you.
