  • Osama Bin Laden is dead - It’s time to end our wars   14 years 10 weeks ago

Speaking of money and Bin Laden, I wonder if anybody or corporation took
out a dead peasant insurance policy on Bin Laden or just a regular death
insurance policy? There was a high probability that he would die soon in 2001,
but it took 11 years to happen. Probably no insurance company would insure him
anyway. He inherited 80 million dollars from his dad when he was 13.
I wonder if he had that money invested with high returns somewhere?

  • Republican rule in America - Closer to Napoleon than the ideals of Jefferson   14 years 10 weeks ago

I live in my modest little home with a job that I don't really like much, living from pay check to pay check. There is no

way that I will ever assend to financial heights excepting the one in a billion chance of hittling the lotto jackpot. Why

can't most other Americans see this fact. You might as well face it that you will never be rich. So Reagonomics

is an illusion, always will be an illusion---period. Why would anybody in their wildest imagination ever, but ever vote

for a Repubican----they only represent rich people. They don't represent small business or working people---only

the filthy rich, the giant corporations here and overseas such as China. Its obvious to any thinking person that

Fox So-called News is working for the filthy rich. Rupert Murdock who ownes Fox lives in China, and is married to

a Chineese woman. No wonder he has no love for American workers and is using fox to pull the wool over all Americans.

We all must work together to take back our government from the domestic, and foriegn oppressors.

@Palindrometary, #13, I like your short but poignant comment.

The Republican Party’s DNA matches perfectly with Germany’s Nazi Party’s DNA. The Nazis infiltrated the universities with crazy college professors. The Anti-Christ is modeling herself after Nazi Germany. Now, our local police are being militarized to kill Americans who speak out in a non-violent way. We are the new Nazis. America is definitely The Anti-Christ that is seeking to ruin human souls all over our planet. The Anti-Christ has made a great start in ruining American souls first and now seeks other souls on our planet. The Anti-Christ embraces money, nuclear weaponry, and false prophets. American brains function closely like Numb Nuts. When a person has a Numb Nut brain, there is no way a person can assess and think clearly on important issues. Stupid does as stupid is. Satan’s disciples are more commonly known as KKKhristians.

History repeating itself. Are you a Communist, a Jew, or Homosexual?
Papers please!!!! History is repeating itself because the American people have

been dummied down in the last 30 years.

smivicus, Sorry this comment is way late, but I'll make it anyway! The exploitation of a desperate workforce anywhere on the planet is the act of only a singular motive known as GREED. You're not fooled, nor am I by lame justifications for shipping jobs to slave markets and at the same time destroying our economy. Great point!

When it comes to addressing the value of individuals like Stephen Hemsley ( United Health Care ) and the Koch Brothers , their ability to hide their celebrity from the public presents a problem that Corporate media fails to responsibly address .

We don't know who they are until someone like Thom steps in to fill us in and after that it's up to us to do what we can to elevate their celebrity to a level more appropriate to the power they have to manipulate society.

  • Will the Kochs get away with giving millions to universities to promote deregulation & friendly oil policies into curriculums?   14 years 10 weeks ago

I devoutly wish it were not so, but, unfortunately, the budget cuts in the states force the universities to take money anywhere they can get it.

  • The Koch Brothers have a plan for Recruiting Students for the Tea Party   14 years 10 weeks ago

I have long been concerned with the influence of large donors on University education. My experience handling travel and meetings has made me aware of some of the ways it works even to influencing how research is conducted and the results. But whenever I bring it up, people just don't get it. We are always into the quick fix without regard to the long term consequences. When you look at what is happening today, you can see the results. Aside from the obvious consequences of corporationsinfluencing what is taguht...and not taught we should be concerned about what our young people are learning about intellectual integrity.

  • Republicans in Florida are now privatizing their union-busting efforts...   14 years 10 weeks ago

How does one "excuse" Obama for those things? Because he is doing so many more good things to counteract his "bend over backwards to be fair to the Republicans" attitude. You'll have to excuse him if he is trying too hard to be the better man than Bush (or any Republican for that matter). I do.

  • Republicans in Florida are now privatizing their union-busting efforts...   14 years 10 weeks ago

The solution to outsourcing and fair pay is NOT disbanding unions, which are the only outlet for many working class people to turn to to get a fair shake. If you think the salaries of policemen, firemen, teachers, and nurses are too high--you are sorely mistaken. In FL, last night on the news, they reported our average salary is $36,000., which is $10,000. less than other parts of the country. Teachers start at @ $31, 000. For police, FL is about 4% lower than comparable job markets. So, I don't think the unions are breaking the banks to get people outrageous salaries.

We can keep taking from the poor and giving to the rich, who are oursourcing America's jobs at our expense and we can keep letting them get away with it, or we can punish them for doing it (tax them). We can stop giving subsidies to oil companies who are making billions in profits, or keep giving these big earners money from the pockets of people who earn $7.50 an hour. If you wish to believe they are creating jobs with our money and won't be able to afford to hire the same people without our money--you have been indoctrinated into believing that by your Republican overlords. It is the only argument they have and it keeps working on the sheeple. But if you, really, examined the results of the Bush tax cuts over the 10 years they were enacted, they helped nobody but the wealthiest and corporations. Bush's dad even said trickle down ecomonics don't work. He called them, "voodoo economics." Look it up.

".....think of the 50s when we saw video of classrooms in Communist Russia where the children were being indoctrinated right from the beginning."

"I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America. And to the Republic, for which it stands, one nation, UNDER GOD????, etc. etc." Indoctrination alright...right here at home! That UNDER GOD comes during the right wing virulent anti communist era of McCarthyism. The ruling class had us all under their thumbs then as well as they do today....or perhaps, even worse. Oh, and that GOD was a capitalist one, of course.

  • The Koch Brothers have a plan for Recruiting Students for the Tea Party   14 years 10 weeks ago

So absolutely true! It makes me think of the 50s when we saw video of classrooms in Communist Russia where the children were being indoctrinated right from the beginning. What a great way to produce followers. But what will happen when this country needs leaders? There won't be a soul who can think for him/herself. What a sad day. Unfortunately, it seems that we are halfway there already. But that's what the far right wants. Do as they say and do not think!

I have been proctoring high school AP exams for the past couple of weeks and happened to thumb through one of the standard US History AP practice guides. The glossary of terms included "Conservative": one who believes in low taxes, small government and more responsibility. "Liberal": One who believes in high taxes, small military, and government intervention.

Thom Love you and y our show but... I disagree with you on this point : US had every right- moral and otherwise to kill Bin laden . Who are we to second guess the decision of our Brave Seals in a life or death situation ? Lets drop this and move on please. Keep up the good work Louise too Bravo to you both

Those are not the most academically rigorous institutions to begin with. Another reason not to go to a college or university with sports programs. Note to employers: do not hire grads from those schools.

  • The Koch Brothers have a plan for Recruiting Students for the Tea Party   14 years 10 weeks ago

It's not just the Kochs. John Allison, retired BB&T bank executive, is giving $2 million grants to any school that will make students read "Atlas Shrugged." He was on CNBC today, but unfortunately it was Joe Kernan handling the segment, and it didn't occur to him to ask Allison if selfishness is a virtue, the masses are parasitical or if altruism is some kind of vice, but it was pretty plain the guy doesn't appreciate the concept of social responsibility.

  • The Koch Brothers have a plan for Recruiting Students for the Tea Party   14 years 10 weeks ago

I'm shocked that these Universities would take the money under such an agreement. It's wrong, wrong and double wrong. Ridiculous especially when it's a PUBLIC University. If the Koch Brothers want to control someone's mind, let 'em open their own schools and see how many shallow-minded student they attract.

  • Will the Kochs get away with giving millions to universities to promote deregulation & friendly oil policies into curriculums?   14 years 10 weeks ago

Given the horrible financial state of colleges and universities today I fear they will be forced to take the money. The Tea Party has seen some success only with the uninformed voter so hopefully the kids getting out of college will use their brains to make the right (I mean left) decision.

  • The Koch Brothers have a plan for Recruiting Students for the Tea Party   14 years 10 weeks ago

Do I think they should be able to do this? Of course NOT. I am appalled about what's happening in this country. I have no respect for these people and am sick and tired of millionaires, billionaires and huge corporations taking over this country. It's being destroyed. I only wish I knew what to do about it. I'm hoping Dr. Batra is correct that there will be a "new golden age". Probably not in my lifetime -- I am 67.

There are lots of unsavoury groups stalking our campuses from religious fundamentalism, hate groups to astro turf movements. The Kochs and the Waltons are a real example of why some folks have too much money. The former have too many homes and waste too much money on propaganda whilst the latter wasted $188 million on an 8 lane undergrond bunker.Me-I can't even afford enough to buy all of my own food anymore-they should just give us all cyanide capsules so we can end our useless, miserable unproductive lives.

It's called the "Hunter School" in New Hampshire

My son went there in 1998; I think he was the first boarding student there from outside the state. His stay was short as we lived in St. Louis, MO and it was so far away from home for an eleven year old to be. The experience was extremely positive for him. Between finding Thom’s books and then the Hunter School our approach to ADD was transformed from a negative view to a positive view. Eventually, we homeschooled and he finished Culinary School, with an AA and “highest honors”. He is a talented and passionate chef and works with a local celebrity chef who had her own TV cooking show.

A short overview: The lady at the park said of my very active 4 year old – “you know, I just want to help, my daughter’s child was like yours and he has been prescribed Ritalin and he is so much easier now. You might want to look into it.” I smiled and said I would think about it. But I was angry. There was nothing wrong with him, he was just active and liked to do lots of different things for short periods of time and didn’t put things away. But his activity wasn’t a problem for me; it was exhausting for others to watch. I didn’t mind because he was just like me and I was what everyone at the time said was “hyper” (and doing lots of different things like commercial fishing, the Navy, and changing majors several times in college). As his mom, I had enough energy to keep up with him – though it did make me think enough to wait 5 years to have my next child.

After many episodes of being late while my son, I was angrily accusing him of again holding us up. I didn’t understand why he couldn’t just get dressed or find his shoes at age 8. He said to me, now crying, “I just get so distracted”. It stopped me cold and I thought about it. A few weeks later I was in a children’s store and a book’s title jumped out at me – “Driven to Distraction” by Edward Hallowell. I started reading it and to my surprise the stories were about adults. I kept saying this is me! Then my husband read it and he said the same thing (about himself). From there I found Thom Hartman’s books and totally understood his Farmer vs. Hunter theory. I didn’t have to accept it, I knew it, I lived it.

My son had been already in and out of schools as I tried new schools and would homeschool when they didn’t work. I even moved to a more homeschool-friendly state. To give me more legal strength to attempt alternative education, including homeschooling, I decided to allow my son to be tested for ADD. Something I strongly opposed up until then because I did not want him to be labeled or drugged. I insisted that his father and I also be tested. We received the expected diagnosis for my son, but we were also told that his father was ‘Extreme ADD’ (years later we learned the ‘extreme’ part was actually PTSD) and I was a rare older (40’s) female with ADHD (Hyperactive). I was still against drugs, but after my son flipped his bed over instead of cleaning his room I tried them – all of us. The results: My house got clean, the bookkeeping got done, I lost weight, my husband finished his college classes, and my son’s room was clean.

Sound good? Not really, the price was my son went from answering questions using advanced vocabulary and deep, thoughtful answers to simplistic quick and easy responses. My bookkeeping was getting caught up, but I just couldn’t remember where that rule in the tax code was (I am a CPA who thrives on research and innovation, but hates to sort, file or input) and my husband found that he had to be on Ritalin to take a test if he was on the drug when he learned the material. So we stopped the drugs and it was during this time that we read Thom Hartman’s books and found his Hunter School along with Camp Kodiak in Canada for the summer.

Fast forward, we quit the corporate life, moved to a farm – where we never planted anything – we raise organic grassfed animals-10 different species-have a commercial kitchen, traveling restaurant, create fiber arts, teach cooking and foods, do a zillion other different things and homeschool. (I am considering offering a summer farm/ranch adventure for ADD kids that utilize ‘hunter’ attributes over farmer.) My children and I have become very active in the food and dairy industry’s control over our food and milk supply, pricing, and restricted access to real food bought directly from real small family farms.

I am very thankful that I found Thom’s books and the Hunter School and never realized the new radio show I had been listening to was the same person. My children, as independent as ever, were protesting and sleeping in the Capital at Madison and I was searching the internet to stay up on what was happening. I found the Ed Schultz show because he was in Madison and Thom Hartman follows him on Madison’s ‘The MIC 92.1’. I can’t call in, as Thom’s show airs after his live show is over. So I can only comment here. I have been telling everyone how informed and well-researched The Thom Hartman show is before I ever knew he was the same author!
