Agreed - it's much too easy for people with stable, well-paying jobs with benefits to say it's okay for people to support themselves with Wal-Mart's wages and that those people are "just happy to have a job."
If workers at Old Navy (and similar stores) are indeed "just happy to have a job," despite low pay and no benefits, it's only because Reaganomics and de-regulation have allowed companies to take what were formerly good-paying jobs with benefits overseas. If there were enough decent paying jobs with benefits for everyone who is willing and able to work, no one would be happy working for the low wages paid by Wal-Mart and other retailers.
If Wal-Mart is not a monopoly, how come it drives out smaller businesses? How come no one can compete with it? Stores like Costco aren't really the same as Wal-Mart. Costco sells large quantities of food and things. And I hope Ms. Lucas doesn't think that Wal-Mart has any kind of quality associated with its products. You get what you pay for.
(And what was her comparison of tvs made 20 years ago with tvs now supposed to prove, other than technology got better?)
That's typical of the libertarian right. They are generally completely displaced from reality. Case in point, she states (in so many words) that people are able to buy TVs for less now than in the 50s, because of big box retailers, and outsourcing of jobs. Really, Miss Lucas? Technological advancement had nothing to do with it? We only have Wal-Mart to thank for our ability to get cheap TVs? If all TVs were purchased from a local retailer, I'm sure the costs would not be markedly different, but the individuals purchasing the TVs would have much more money to do so. Lower prices also mean lower wages, Mrs. Lucas- on both sides of the deal.
Where did you find this Carrie Lukas person? The mall? Seems to me thats where all her opinions were formed. Walking through the mall (as a young teen-ager) forming all her ideas of how economics work. I'm all for consumerism, and it costs me less at the check out counter. Must be good for everyone!
It was Utah, not Minnesota. State workers released the private info for a large list of immigrants, most of whom were probably here illegally, but not all, to the media and law enforcement. The list included things like addresses and due dates for pregnant women.
Re: so insecure that they fear being separated from their firearms.
Laws are only for the law abiding. The lawless dismiss laws. It seems to me that the founding fathers knew that they would never have thrown off the tyranny of the British if it were not for their arms, and thus they preserved the right to bear arms. What is the first thing a tyranny does to overthrow it's population, but to disarm them. I think the founding fathers knew the nature of "man", and so they did not exempt the government they created from the corruption of men.
Not that I agree with those who "quoted" Jefferson, but to be honest; we need to keep in mind that our founding fathers overthrew a government. It seems to me that our founding fathers wished that we would be ever vigilant least we would eventually loose the freedom that they fought and died for.
It strikes me as ironic that the same fundamentalist Christians who claim 'In God we trust' are so insecure that they fear being separated from their firearms.
Unless your a devout Christian, then you insinuate that Americans are to be dominated cowards.
Such notions are odious and devoid of rationality, that such religious leaders are not laughed out of the spot light only reveals the sheepole that permeate our society now.

Maxrot, I was just thinking that as I was walking into work (after listening to Stephanie Miller about this same issue). I must be channeling you. Stop controlling my mind!
When a person or persons lose a loved one, words are difficult to say in trying to ease a person's loss.
The Capuchin Missions in Detroit had this prayer card that may be of some help.
We Shall Meet Again
If I should leave this world without a warning, and not even whisper a fond farewell, grieve not for one more message from the lips that God has stilled. But just remember me with love and prayers for my soul’s journey to that fair land beyond life’s tears. For I have believed with all my heart in its existence, and I know that God is good, for He has come to me through the life of Him whose very garment I have sought to touch. It may be lonely, and I hope you miss me just a little, because I have loved so deeply my own family and faithful friends.
Forgive me if I have ever hurt you and remember me for what I longed to be. Have faith that I am nearer than your dreams and fondest longings. For the God of love shall keep all kindred spirits close together, though the misty vale between this world and that to come, keep us from each other’s sight, for a few precious moments. Whisper softly that you love me and it shall linger on within my soul until you come. Say not goodbye, for on some bright tomorrow we shall meet again!
People have heard me say the United States of Hell but there are other names that are appropriate for our country. Here are the other names – the United States of Numb Nuts, the United States of Sodom and Gomorrah, the United States of Where Shit Rises to the Top, and the United States of Satan’s Disciples.
@nora, Obama is a weak leader. He is a firm believer in "to get along you go a long." He would do the Democratic Party a great favor by not seeking re-election. Obama is the Grand Experiment that has failed.
@Inspiraven, Thom is an equal opportunity host for the dummying down of certain guests on his show.

Thom, I need to correct you. The word is not Christianists; the correct word is KKKhristians. This word encompasses racists and Christians.

ugh.
Cary Lucas is just a silly-dilly. Big Business drives out small business and cuts wages, so the workers can't afford a decent living.
Ms. Lucas has a nice job and is divorced from reality.

Freedom of Religion does not mean you're only free to choose the Christian Church of your choice.
