I was a bit disappointed to hear your dismissal of either the guest's, Mr. Gainor's, or another caller's statement about BMI being incredibly problematic.
I didn't agree with anything else he said, but he is right about that. BMI is bull--crap.
To quote Keith Devlin on NPR.org, BMI "is mathematical snake oil." His article breaking down why BMI is the wrong choice of indicators of people's health is located here:

Now, I'm not saying that as a license to eat everything in sight and never exercise. I'm saying the exact opposite. I've lost more weight, eaten healthier and gotten in better shape since forgetting about BMI. I just think the scientific and medical communities, as well as public health organizations, can find a far more accurate way to represent people's health.
Further, it fosters the exclusive focus on individuals' personal eating habits rather than turning a critical eye to conventional, chemical-based and factory farming, genetically modified organisms and big agri-business' stranglehold on the supply of food.

I have written here before about how the local orchard owners say that cannot even get one "native" to even apply for work, and after workplace raids, their only choice is either close or allow in a new batch of workers with perhaps questionable credentials. - constans1
Perhaps the problem is insufficient wages and awful working conditions?
One of the things Mayor Bloomberg has done right in NYC has been to have the calorie content of various food items be posted at restaurants/fast food sites that maintain a certain number of sites. It does steer me to save a couple of hundred calories by picking a similar but less caloric version of what I am interested in. Or, if none exists, I ask myself, if it is worth that many calories. -- It is amazing how many calories certain luncheon sandwiches have.
Worst food? These disgusting little white worms/eels(?) during a high school Spanish class dinner: traditional food that I forced myself to eat. The tripe was more bearable. I've never forgotten it/them -- high school is long behind me.
I was just trying to make a point. Look at all the pub KFC is getting. Looks like it worked.

I am sick and tired of the hypocrisy, and I think you are extremely naive about how the world works. This is all part and parcel of the myths that perpetuate hate. The "Is Lindsey Graham gay"... that's not really important. It's just like our country to want to pry into individual lives.
As for the Arizona Law on the governors desk:
It's very offensive!!! It's condoning racial profiling which is racism. I'm not an immigrant... nor in Arizona... nor of Hispanic descent but I am biracial (half black and half white) and have often been mistaken as other races. Even at 25 I know what it's like to have my identity questioned. I know what it's like to be followed in stores because the employees think minorities steal. How many people in Arizona are just from Mexican descent or are native americans?
And for the worst thing I've ate:
The worst thing I've had was natto (rotten beans curd) while I was in Japan. I had a few interesting things there (squid ice cream... potato ice cream... "mountain root"... whole horse mackerel bones and all... and pickled umes) and I'm not picking... but natto by far is pretty bad.
Though I'm wondering if really the genetically modified foods is also contributing to our weight gain. I personally don't eat fast food, pre-packaged foods, soda, and pre-made mixes. I also RARELY eat sweets (like ice cream) and if I do I make it myself. While I was in Japan I had exercise and was eating 3 meals a day. There I was dropping pounds like they were water. Here... I eat 1.5 meals a day (far lower than the recommended calorie count), exercise daily, and have gained some (not tons but enough for me to notice) and am just trying to maintain that. What if it's something going into the raising and force growing of the foods? As if there is a chemical there before it goes to the store?
The anti-immigrant tea-bagger excuse for "outing" Sen. Lindsey Graham is revolting and immoral -- i.e. that "queers," like undocumented aliens, are "them," not "us," so must be stopped. That position should be condemned in the strongest terms, as Thom did on his show this morning.
However, the hypocrisy rule of journalism still applies to Sen. Graham. He has been a vigorous anti-gay politician throughout his career, voting for repulsive laws like the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. In this case his own sexual orientation is a legitimate matter of public interest.
That's not outing; it's reporting.
I haven't asked my dad about that photo in years, or even what happened to it. It used to be at my grandfather's summer home in upstate NY..., back when a waiter (union) could own a summer home... My grandparents have been gone for a long time.
A dish that I used to enjoy at my grandparent's which we used to consider a delicacy, but most find well, questionable at best is cholent, a bean and fatty meat combo that was put into the oven before sundown on Friday, and served after the Sabbath ended the day after, in keeping with the Kosher dietary laws.
On the non-Kosher side, I'm fond of geoduck, (giant clam) but, have you seen one of those whole?

re; food: I tried to eat a "Hot Pocket" one time. There were little slabs of a food-like substance that were supposed to be ham,and a yellowish substance that was supposed to be cheese. But the bread crust tasted like it was full of sugar! WTF?
@Mark K - I'll betcha a week's pay that the SPLC also shows up on several lists of fanatical left-wing organization on numerous neocon sites.

A local restaurant (Salazars) has one of my favorite deep fried foods, deep fried Ice Cream, wrap your mind around that concept. Apparently its not specific to the restaurant, I can pick up 1/2 gallons of the flavor from Dreyers. Not as good as fresh though.
I assume ya'll have seen the Gov. Pataki "Paul Revere" ads on TV? the petition to repeal the health care act? I watch it with the sound off and yell out: "The Liberals are Coming! The Coloreds are Coming!" Its kind of funny that way.
Before I sign-off today, I think it should be pointed out the group "Americans For Legal Immigration"--whose website is a fascinating amalgamation of paranoid racist fantasies fueled by exaggerations and lies--is on the Southern Poverty Law Center's hatewatch list as a fanatical nativist organization.
