The business class has WAY too much power over our lives and destinies. I think a guaranteed income -- with single payer -- would have a wonderfully transformative effect on society as well as the lives of its citizens.

If it were enough to survive on, I'd gladly quit my job and do something meaningful and fulfilling with my life. Unfortunately, bad labor laws have screwed me out of 14 weeks of vacation time and therefore I can't even catch up on basic stuff at home.

Geez, I wonder what a national poll on guaranteed basic income would look like?.....99% in favor, 1% oppposed......the 1% including billionaires like the Waltons, and fast food franchise owners.

    Thomas Paine says, yeah!

Thom, I would highly recommend this NYT article for your reading. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/07/us/politics/hillary-clintons-team-is-wary-as-bernie-sanders-finds-footing-in-iowa.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=photo-spot-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=0

Who would I like to see in Hillary Clinton's cabinet should she steal the Democratic nomination away from Senator Bernie Sanders? Any corporate management who also hates to see waste and fraud among its worker bees. More specifically, I would like to see someone from Walmart, Hewlett Packard, Disney Corp, etc. in Hillary's cabinet, in any position as Secretary or Under-secretary. Someone who knows how to suppress wages but talks a good game about worker concerns; able to strategically outsource every middle-class job if the Transpacific Partnership trade rules fall short in Congress; hires more foreign nationals that got the benefit of an American ivy league education; uses identity politics as a conduit to pass corporate personhood more effectively; and anyone else who would understand the real value of being greedy--not just on Wall Street--but within our commons and our community recreational centers. Corporate statehood would be the backbone of our 21st Century.

Bucky Fuller said pretty much the same in the 60's. Give everyone on the planet an income and let them do what they love to do. Humans are designed to be problem-solvers for the earth.

  • Bernie Sanders Could be the Next FDR   9 years 50 weeks ago

Mr. Hartmann: I just have to thank you for introducing me to Bernie Sanders. I used to listen to you in the Seattle area before we lost our progressive stations. Every Friday you would have Mr. Sanders on "Brunch with Bernie," and I used to ask myself, "who is this guy? He's wonderful. Let's get him for president." That has to be at least 8-9 years ago. Since then, I'd occasionally hear about Mr. Sanders in the news, but not much. Plus I lost track of where I could get your programs.

Now, I cannot be more excited about someone running for president. I'm almost 68 years old and I don't I have EVER voted for a candidate I was really excited about. This man has my heart, my soul, my vote, and so far, some of my very limited money. And you, in large part are responsible for that because I got hear his ideas and beliefs on your show. So thank you very, very much for that.

By the way, I live in a rural area with no TV or internet, other than the horrible satellite system that we have (internet only; limited and agonizingly slow bandwidth). However, again thanks to your web site, I was able to see that the local station in our town is carrying you from 9-12 every weekday. So, now I can return to the fold. Makes me very happy. --Sincerely, Cathrynm47

Hey Thom ! and friends! I barely limped into Social Security as a Union Building Trades Commercial Plumber and was relieved when I started getting my checks from SS after I turned 67. I couldn't have stood any more pain if I had to work any more years so raising the retirement age is something I can't believe any politician could believe would be OK but I remember my sense of relief when I realized I didn't have to maintain unemployment anymore BECAUSE I COULD ALWAYS PAY MY RENT!

I thought! WOW WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT IF EVERYBODY COULD ALWAYS PAY THEIR RENT ! Without having to be in pain or work slave hours or all the other compromises' that families have to make in minimum wage America.

Salt Lake City has found that if they give Drug addicts, Drunks, and other assorted "street people" free HOUSING, they stop being Drunks, Addicts and they go to WORK! This will really piss off the Christians,

its almost like that pain in the Ass Liberal was talking about on the service on the Mount

And you "dont want to forget about your Native American brothers to" Thom? well they did it to. Native Americans had black slaves and fought for the confederacy. They had southern-like plantations with black slaves.

This same experiment was done in Canada, the results were the same. Homelessness almost completely dissappeared, unemployment fell, standard do everyone's living improved, and the economy was elevated. Unfortunately, the conservative base here, makes too much money ripping off our govt., and conning the public, with occupations, of other countries, and terrorism.

  • Will Bernie Sanders be our next President?   9 years 50 weeks ago

Bernie Sanders just might be a "New FDR", but as the original once said, "presidents are choosen not elected". The power brokers who control who gets elected will never allow anyone who is serious about change to get anywhere never the levers of powers unless they absolutely can and do control him (or her). Remember----we are an oligarchy now. Not a democratic republic. The American People gave away their govenment while they were busy watching so-called "reality TV", playing videos games and most recently, arguing about Confederate flags, statues, and tombstones.

  • Bernie Sanders Could be the Next FDR   9 years 50 weeks ago

This post, written by Alan McLemore, follows an article from Truthdig: The Fight Over Obamacare Was A Giant Political Charade; July 2, 2015. It was so damn good, I just had to re-post it here. It starts with him responding to a comment from another blogger.

Great comment, except for this: "You will need a lawyer, to get treatment approved even if you have coverage."

Bad news. I am a lawyer, and one of the things I have seen happen steadily since Reagan was elected has been the non-stop cutting back of the rights people have to sue corporations and, in particular, medical corporations. They did it by using corporatist media to tell lies, like the infamous million-dollar McDonald's hot-coffee case:

    https://www.ttla.com/index.cfm...

I used to practice medical-malpractice law, but quit after the cases dried up--because under present law, a lawyer must spend $50,000 or more to get the requisite expert witnesses, medical records, and other things necessary to prepare and try the case. This is true even if the case is "open and shut", which many are. This means that, in Texas (and now in most states), you are very unlikely to find a lawyer to help you unless you have at least a half-million dollars in damages. And now that pain-and-suffering sorts of "consequential" damages are very limited, that means an extremely serious injury--with tons of medical bills--is required. How serious? If you come in and tell me you lost half the fingers on your right hand, or lost half the sight in one eye or the hearing in one ear, I'll tell you "Sorry, not enough damages, good luck with your next doctor".

And in cases where medical-malpractice isn't involved: More and more, the "terms of service" you unthinkingly agree to in a transaction require you to "arbitrate" disputes. What this means is that you have to "try" your case before a panel of corporate lawyers who pass as "arbitrators". It's not cheap--and less than 5% of claimants prevail even if you spend the money.

It's an awful situation. All the more reason for BERNIE IN '16.

Yeah no shit. Literally do-or-die, folks.

  • Bill O’Reilly and America Need to Be De-Programmed   9 years 50 weeks ago

Thom I like your show but you are framing this debate all wrong. I was a white racist when I was a teenager in the 1970s. I had that Confederate battle flag hung up on my wall in my bedroom. I was taught to be that way because of family and church. I was trained to be that way. it wasn't until I had the strength and realized that the church was led by a racist and was teaching False teachings for political gain of the Republican Party of basically Fox News. this is before Fox News even existed. I changed because of conscience of right and wrong before I could prove the church was a wrong racist political paramilitary death cult. It took me years of study to breakdown the Greek to English translations of the scriptures and how what I discovered was different than the death cults intentional mistranslation
. The death cults Greek to english translations wasn't really Greek to english. It was Greek to Fox news mistranslation summarized by an extremely well trained in Greek racist neoconservative. (And submit unquestioningly to your leader because you dont know greek was the common understood advise) He was a retired US Air Force colonel"pastor" who had earned his master's degree from Dallas Theological Seminary. I was so full of this cult indoctrinationI that when I was 14 my fantasy was to be dropped from an airplane into russia with only machine gun and hand grenades and kill as many commies as I could before they killed me. Looking back now the intense indoctrination two or three Bible tapes a day each an hour long was so self destructive psychologically and socially that I cut off ties with my friends. and I think after time I became so alone there's a need to do something to get a great amount of attention. something I could be remembered for because I felt so alone . these thoughts were not on the surface they were deep in my psychology because the words of the intense indoctrination was constantly in conflict withwhat I thought of right and wrong ,thinking for myself. anyhow I decided that this was not for me I change my mind and took control of my life at age 15 and I caught pure hell from my family and the church cult.

Also the plans for attacking the Middle East all Muslim countries Iraq Syria Iran we're up on the screen behind the pulpit and this is 1972 3 & 4. it is also notable that Barbara Bush and Dan Quayle had attended this "church" in Houston Post Oak Galleria area. Robert E Lee was idolized. Martin Luther King was demonized. You never said anything against the leader of this paramilitary church cult without being punished somehow. Green berets, Army Rangers, Navy seals were in the audience and they were idolized. The leader carried a .45 under the pulpit.

So I know what a neo conservative white supremacist racist is.

So as I said I turned on them and caught hell for doing so. College money was taken away and I was told to leave because my mother didn't want discipline from God because of her "guilt by association" with me. I slept in my car and painted houses to pay for my first semester at Texas A&M. I took 2 bottles of gallon water and went into the woods and showered. I got it done. No one was the wiser.

I did what it took to get it done. I didn't ask for handout because I was mistreated by white supremacists. It was tough but I did it.

So I'm not a racist but I am proud of being white and of my ancestors as black people should be proud of being black and thier ancestry.

So when Thom says white people need to get over there "whiteness" then Thom needs to be fair and say black people need to get over their blackness. otherwise Thom doing the same thing that the white supremacist do white people this time attacking people based on the color of thier skin. and that's b*******. you might as well say humans need to get over there humaness. blacks murder blacks blacks enslaved blacks and murder whites. We are talking about human nature and that murderous nature is equal and has nothing to do with skin color. I'm for equal rights not blacks having more rights than white people and not for black people taking revenge on white people for what happened in the past.

Racism does exist and it always will. It's actually the "Democracy of skin color". If you go to San Angelo Tx. You will see 75% Hispanics and reverse racism happens everyday.

But attacking the white race and "you lost" is not how the cult is deprogrammed. And you certainly wont convince borderline radical rascists to listen to your show because you will just strengthen thier resolve to be a radical rascist. . I think your jumping on a band wagon because of South Carolina. The cult is deprogrammed basically in two ways. 1) by head on collapse. When the cult members see death or destruction before thier eyes the fleeting lies of the cult are forgotten. When the immediate survival instincts of "now destruction" kick in then the previous twisted "survival instincts" programmed by whatever cult then thosr lies are kicked to the curb. 2) Questions. By producing facts based on proveable evidence which run contradictory to the cults rhetorical falsehoods. This causes the cult member to use thier own brain to question the cult thier involved with. You ask questions for th initially but ultimately they have to question for themselves or they won't leave.

Chances are the shooter in South Carolina was lonely guy, but somewhere somebody trained him to be a killer. That's who needs to be found out and gone after and debunked. Whether it's parents church etc...

    God bless the 9 souls

But 10300 people?! That's nearly TWICE as much as Hillary had in New York! Where's all the footage? I'll tell you where it is, only in places like this who publicize what a disaster corporations and Wall Street have been to America! ...Media is corporatized! They aren't going to give Bernie Sanders ANY air time or bandwidth if they can possibly help it.... Do yourselves all a big favor, DUMP your TV sets - "The Revolution Will NOT Be Telivised!"

  • Bill O’Reilly and America Need to Be De-Programmed   9 years 50 weeks ago

And since we are talking of the democracy of skin cilor then it's only logical that there will be racial strife until everyone has the same skin color in a thousand years or so. And? Then it will be something else that the banksters will use to divide us. Maybe heighth? Fatness? Etc all to make a buck. And racism or "Democracy of skin" occurred in the North and still does. 4 slave states did not secede from the union.

I understand Thom is running an entertainment show and he ruffles feathers for attention but Thom needs to quit pretending that the North were a bunch of moral do good nice liberals fighting and dying to free slaves. That wasn't why the Civil war started. Lincoln only used the slaves after 2 years of losing battle after battle with unstoppable Robert E Lee. Lincoln used slaves manpower to help the North and take that manpower from the South. Lincoln favored deporting the blacks even in the North to Africa. It's true the South does have racist as do all races black white etc... but to conflate racism with a death cult is false and absurd. Most white racist will benigningly sit in a lazy boy complain about affirmative action but would never actually get a gun and do unnecessarily what Roof did. White racism is not a death cult. Thom is wrong to conflate the two. The death cult then as it is today are the banksters of the South who used turned racism into radical racism a death cult. That's how the banksters made money in the South and in 4 slave states in the North .
Lincoln and Malcolm X both believed in seperation of blacks and whites. And it was not just the South who had Jim Crow laws. As a matter of fact California ( Union state) had more Jim Crow laws than any southern state. O'Reilly would have been more accurate to say there are no more Jim Crow laws against blacks anymore. There was/is a black president in the white house for 8 years.Blacks have the best chance they've ever had to work and be a responsible successful citizen than ecer before.

Also the evidence does support Mark Saulys' post #8 reply to Thom "...NEVER did I ever know or even hear of ANYBODY who believed Hitler was Jesus Christ or his reincarnation. You really hurt your credibility - and our movements - when you embellish like that. If you keep doing that you'll be known as "that crazy lefty on the radio" and "lefty" will become synonymous with "crazy"..."

Hitler did manipulate protestant Christianity through the Greek scriptures through his protestant "theologians". And the Catholic Church also made a deal the the devil Hitler.

    http://www.verfolgte-schueler.org/1933-45.htm

Doktor Gerhard Kittle, of Kittle's Theological Dictionary, was one of Hitler's theologians. Doktor Kittle was imprisoned after WWII by the allies. The allies went straight to the university where Doktor Kittle taught and arrested him. Kittle was imprisoned for 17 months? The NIV Bible today is based the Kittle's TDNT Greek to english mistranslations. The current h cult I was forced to attend also used TDNT for support of its false mistranslations. Are mistranslations insignificant? No way. Kittle tried stripping the humanity of Jesus by attacking the Greek to english translation of the blood of Jesus. The result was attacking the humanity of the Jew Jesus. And later used by neoconservative churches to attack the humanity of MLK and all humsn loving liberals.

    Also https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&ei=nJiWVeXlMIGnsQXCyYHI...

Thus the logic being if you can remove Jesus' humanity and your normal judgement of right and wrong through Greek mistranslations then you've destroyed the neoconservative christians own judgement of right and wrong thereby allowing all kinds of Fox propaganda internalized into the neoconservative Christian's psyche without thier own judgement. You can pass off as prejudice lies etc... as "spiritual christianity".

And the humanity of Jesus is removed through mistranslations then you get to go to heaven and don't need to be that pesky human to human to one another. You can make millions and send people to thier deaths in false wars for profit. And not have to worry about having a conscience. You could be Adolf Hitler and still go to heaven.

  • Mike Huckabee Wants to Keep the Poor Poor!   9 years 50 weeks ago

Huckabee he is a Zealot Aristocrat nut! He is a person who is fanatical and uncompromising in pursuit of their religious, political, or other ideals, if you follow his agenda is concept of government is to make Americans a little less free, which is the Republican party concept of government, his ideas are tyrannical.

Huckabee believes that we are a Christian nation. In Matthew 25: 31-46 basic message is whatever you been to the least of my brethren, you have done it on to me. The Lord will gather nations together and separate the goats from the sheep. “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Picture this; United States Congress has gathered together for joint session, Democrats on the left, and Republicans on the right, Gov. Huckabee is standing with the Republicans on the right side of the chamber. Then you hear a voice saying, “Mr. Speaker, the Lord Jesus Christ”. The chamber stands and their eyes turned to the door; you hear a roar of cheers praising the Lord as he walks in shaking hands with the members of Congress as the Lord walks up to the podium. The Lord Jesus Christ turns around to address a joint session of Congress, then at that time the Republicans, Conservatives and the tea partiers have just noticed they are on the left hand of the Lord, that they are goats.

  • Bernie Sanders Could be the Next FDR   9 years 50 weeks ago

Reply to RFord’s post #5 where he says: “Bernie’s more of what a Christian should be like than they are and he’s Jewish!”… Jesus was more of what a Christian should be like and he was Jewish too! (Sorry, couldn’t resist.) And some of the least religious people I know have also been more what a Christian should be like than many Christians… that is, if empathy and compassion figure into the equation more than superficially!

Instant-RunOff, much as it pains me to say this, since our nasty little scuffle over nuclear power I’ve noticed there’s a lot more we seem to agree on than disagree. Just surfin’ the threads made this pretty obvious. I guess weirder things have been known to occur…

Getting back on topic, I keep hearing and reading how great Bernie’s campaign is going, how the number of people showing up at his events keeps swelling… without any endorsement from corporate media!!! Makes me giddy. Gives me hope that once people catch onto what a real statesman looks and sounds like, there'll be no turning back. These corporate-owned clowns will become obsolete as voters turn a deaf ear to their empty rhetoric. Bernie speaks truth to power as he always has, and his passion is contagious. After hearing the real thing, people might find it glaringly obvious just how hollow the corporate schtick is and how amazing the contrast. With things this desperate and expected to get worse, this is our time of need without a doubt. Bernie offers just the kind of leadership it takes to launch a real political revolution in this country. My husband and I will keep contributing to his campaign whenever we can… and buying his tee shirts! I reckon I’ll end up with a whole wardrobe of Bernie Sanders tee shirts by the time the election is over.

Failure is not an option, folks. We have to win this. The stakes are enormous. Not only must we put Bernie in the White House; we’ve gotta clean up Congress too. When Bernie is president, he’ll need a Congress he can work with, who won’t be hellbent on obstructing everything Bernie sets out to accomplish. No more empty-suit deadbeats taking up space in the Senate and House!

  • Unregulated Capitalism is Destroying the Planet   9 years 50 weeks ago

Part of the problem is evident in the title of your article. When you say UNREGULATED capitalism is destroying the planet, you are implying that we just haven't found the right regulations yet, and the fundamental principles of capitalism itself are just fine. I cannot disagree more with that statement. There are major problems INHERENT in capitalism, that cannot be solved through regulation. Here are the biggest and simplest three that I know about. (1) ALIENATION. The American dream is that you keep your stuff in your house, I keep my stuff in my house, I don't need to care about you, and I can't afford to care about you. Obviously that leads to problems, as long as we're not simply sharing everything. (2) INEQUALITY. Every market transaction gives greater benefit to the trader in the stronger bargaining position, thus making that trader stronger still, and increasing inequality. Thus, plutocracy is inevitable as long as we have markets -- i.e., as long as we're not simply sharing everything. (3) EXTERNALITIES. A market transaction negotiated between you and me does not take into account the costs that are borne by some third party; such costs -- war, poverty, ecocide, etc. -- are unmeasured and are not reflected in the market price. That's unavoidable, as long as we have markets. The solution to all these problems is sharing, but that's hard for anyone in our present culture to imagine. Hence John Lennon's lyrics: "Imagine no possessions -- I wonder if you can."
