  • Is there still time to combat global climate change?   10 years 10 weeks ago

The internet is full of everything.

Using a survey to coax People into a false sense of hope about our ability to remedy the collapse of our global atmosphere's ability to support life in order to make the case that America can sustain the Presidency of an indisputably pro dirty energy Hillary Clinton is irresponsible.

Hillary and her husband's forte is monetizing public service for their own gain - period, nothing more, nothing less. If you hate cash in our democracy then it would be irrational for your to vote for a clinton.

I have not heard you discuss ageism in the workforce? the Information Technology job sector is a good example of this.

  • Bill O'Reilly's latest "white" dream...   10 years 10 weeks ago

Any psychologist will tell you that personal experience trumps all when it comes to perception. If someone is told one thing, but that doesn't match their personal experiences, then they are more likely to believe their experience, not what they are told.

Women and minorities can be told time and time again that they are being treated equally now. But just one personal experience with sexism or racism can trump all that they are told.

Similarly, we white guys can be told a million times not to pre-judge people. But then it just takes one bad experience with someone unlike yourself to your mind down that path or pre-judgement.

With that in mind, how many white guys do you think have been the victims of crimes or other bad experiences at the hands of non-white, non-guys?

If a woman tends to avoid men because she has had a bad experience with them in the past, such as being abused or raped, that is considered acceptable. We're supposed to "be understanding and compassionate" towards her.

Why not extend that towards white men who have bad experiences as well? If a white male tends to avoid people not like himself, because he has been a victim of something in the past, should we not also be "understanding and compasionate" towards him as well? Why is that considered unacceptable?

  • Bill O'Reilly's latest "white" dream...   10 years 10 weeks ago

After Barack Obama became president, blatant racism skyrocketed; the same will happen with sexism if Hillary Clinton becomes president. This is a very sad statement about the predominate mindset in this country.

How soon can I move to Mars?

  • Bill O'Reilly's latest "white" dream...   10 years 10 weeks ago

I agree that women in positions of authority are often mislabed as "bitchy" or whatever. This really needs to stop. Women have shown they are quite capable of handling the same political, corporate and other leadership positions just as well as men. And, as the "suppposed", and apparently former world leader of the relatively free nations of the world, I wonder why a women has not reached the pinacle of power in this country (and no I don't mean head of the CFR or Federal Reserve). Look at the nations who already have, like Germany, England, Israel, Iceland, Ireland, India and several more. Look too at how long it took us to put the first woman into space when compared to the Russians. I am no fan of Hillary, but her gender should not even indirectly be considered as a negative factor when running for office anymore than gender should be a factor in being a CEO

I think someone forgot and left off the "No" part of this poll. I think Congress should have been consulted.

  • Dear Police: Stop Treating Us Like We're Part Of ISIS   10 years 10 weeks ago

Here in Santa Cruz, CA a young man was executed by taser while incarcirated inside jail. We have the highest mortality rate while in jail in the state. If your in jail and denied health care it is the same as an execution. A 78 year old was jailed for smoking pot and denied health care. He died later. We built a new 12 million dollar prison and gave raises to every cop. Cops do not need more money. City police chiefs earn more then the president of the United States.

I support a new division of the US Marshall Service. A federal police force to police the police. Take over internal affairs and the investigation of police misconduct. End the military procedures to arrest. Using a military sniper to execute an American without due process is unconstitutional. Military chokeholds are illegal. We should not be afraid to call 911. No parent should to have to watch their child be executed like an animal.

We haven't built a new school in Santa Cruz in decades. A retired prison guard without a college education can earn more on retirement then a working teacher with a post graduate degree. A teacher with 15 years experience with a post graduate degree is still earning $60,000. To get the last raise she needed to add 2 more students of over 30. After the students leave they turn off the air conditioner. She has to continue working in the hot environment.

Join the national teachers movement starting in CA. We want a $10,000 raise for every teacher and a class size limit of 20. End the economic injustice. Get the health care ceo's out of our education budget. Let teachers buy into the medi-care system. The savings to the district to go directly to the teachers.

Good point anastasi. Robert Bates was a somewhat well-off guy, and he was volunteering. He sounded like he did this to play action hero with live ammo. It's just sickening that some people can't distinguish fun from situations with real consequences.

  • Dear Police: Stop Treating Us Like We're Part Of ISIS   10 years 10 weeks ago

I disagree with the theory that higher police pay will make them less thuggish. My state pays them very well, into the six figures after less than ten years on the force - and they make very good pensions based on the last years' salary PLUS OVERTIME. They routinely clock in for double the hours worked, and retire on double what they would otherwise make. Teachers, DPW workers don't get this option for their pensions.

There are still incidents of police brutality that have nothing to do with being frustrated and underpaid....

  • Dear Police: Stop Treating Us Like We're Part Of ISIS   10 years 10 weeks ago

Holy crap, Alice, chill the hell out. You are the angriest pothead I've ever heard of and I know one who's a gun nut.

In the radio show, on which I like to comment on that day's post, Thom gave an interpretation of that part of Genesis, and I have an alternative theory. I just wanted to put it out there and see what people thought. I left out something important though. In Gen 1, God creates people both male and female and tells them to be fruitful and multiply. In Gen 2, he makes Adam out of existing material, eventually makes Eve, then after the original sin, they're finally fruitful. So my interpretation is that those earlier people were "everybody else" besides the Israelites. This also gets rid of the idea that people were incredibly incestuous for the first 10 generations or so.

  • Dear Police: Stop Treating Us Like We're Part Of ISIS   10 years 10 weeks ago

As more and more police are called out on felonious behavior, I worry that our 'federal' powers will use it as an excuse to take over all police departments. This would be a most horrible position. Having a national police system would take power out of the local and state hands and give it to "them."

I have never had a reason to call the police. I doubt I ever will. For friends who have tried to call them, they don't show up or, when they do, it's hours later, or they do nothing. (So far, no one has been shot or killed that did the calling.)

I truly believe it's We, the People, who need to start taking back our power. Not only with protecting our property and selves, but with our politicians. WE have let everyone else take care of us and it needs to stop.

  • Dear Police: Stop Treating Us Like We're Part Of ISIS   10 years 10 weeks ago

The police are a cult. Simple as that. And like any cult... you're either in, or you're out.

  • Dear Police: Stop Treating Us Like We're Part Of ISIS   10 years 10 weeks ago

Mathboy, what the hell does the Bible, or nomads versus farmers, have to do with another unarmed black man getting slaughtered by a goddam cop?!

10K’s post is the only one with the remotest relevance to the topic Thom brought up. HELLO. But I guess I shouldn’t expect more than that from a majority of my WHITE counterparts. Cheers! - AIW

  • Is Congress wrong to undermine President Obama on the Iran deal?   10 years 10 weeks ago

This deal isn't just with President Obama its also with China Russia France Britain and Germany. We've had enough of warmongers, if the GOP wants war, give them weapons and send them to fight it instead of brainwashing young minds!

  • Dear Police: Stop Treating Us Like We're Part Of ISIS   10 years 10 weeks ago

10K Those teachers deserve every year the received. Any teacher who doesn't demand and receive the best from his students don't belong in the profession. I applaud Judge Baxter. I hope more follow his example.

  • Dear Police: Stop Treating Us Like We're Part Of ISIS   10 years 10 weeks ago

I'm kind of surprised I haven't heard anything about the political orientations of the recent gun tote'n white cops killing unarmed black men. Progressive Democrats?.....probably not! I have a strong feeling these guys soak up all the Fox TV propaganda they have time for. Their actions are very likely inspired by big money sponsored hate speech.....as well is the severe sentencing handed down today by Fulton County Judge Jerry Baxter for the Atlanta schools cheating scandal. Baxter is a racist plain and simple, and I'm sure he has his pompous ass firmly planted in front of Fox News tonight.

Big money control of the media is no less a roadblock to liberty than Citizens United is...both enslave and undermine the will of the people, while simultaneously promoting an extreme and immoral enrichment of the few.

  • Dear Police: Stop Treating Us Like We're Part Of ISIS   10 years 10 weeks ago

Genesis 3 is not best interpreted as being about all humanity. It's an explanation of the difference between farmers and nomads, Us and Them.

A child asks, "Dad, why do we have to work on the farm all the time? Those nomads don't farm, and they have plenty of food." (In recent history the circus takes the place of nomads.) The father responds, "Well, you can run off and join the nomads if you want, but they don't have morality. They'll kill you or steal your stuff as soon as look at you."

In Genesis, Adam and Eve eat the fruit of Knowledge of Good and Evil, then are forced out of the garden. Actual societal development took the reverse course; as people settled down to farm, they had to develop morals against theft and murder because the society couldn't survive otherwise. But since no one would have written down or told stories of how this came to pass, a religious story was made up after the fact.

  • 2016 is the Race Against Austerity.   10 years 10 weeks ago

Austerity for the 99% has equalled unprecedented prosperity and extreme concentration of wealth for the 1%. This wealth transfer has been achieved by the big money overthrow of our representative democracy.....the most secret and discreet takeover of a government in world history. It has been done by controlling the message with massive misinformation via the corpse media. Things won't change unless we find a way to communicate the truth to the masses before 2016.

Overcoming the big money weapons of mass misinformation, the resultant apathy, hopelessness, upside down world, all fomented by media lies....that in my opinion is the very heart of the problem and where we need to focus all of our efforts between now and 2016....I know easier said than done. Failure will only lead to blood in the streets, no other option, that I'm certain of.....how can we completely ignore history?

  • 2016 is the Race Against Austerity.   10 years 10 weeks ago

No, the Democrats since Clinton have caused tremendous hardships for poor women, as you surely know, and targetted the disabled as well. I do understand that those in the middle class usually lack knowledge about the tremendously complex factors concerning poverty and women. What the (Clinton) Democrats did was to look at families that were barely balancing high on a tightwire, and turned a fire hose on them. The Democrats enacted a range of policies that not only pushed poor women deeper into poverty, but that cut the rungs off the ladder back out.

Finally, Obama was elected, and he restored Social Security. But the Dems in Congress promptly began cutting again. The last I heard, they are either considering, or have already agreed to, cuts that are far deeper than those made by B. Clinton. The majority pof those who will suffer are women. IF H. Clinton were elected, we have no doubt that she would pick up where B. Clinton left off, "reforming" Social Security out of existence.

  • 2016 is the Race Against Austerity.   10 years 10 weeks ago

One correction: It is the Democrats, not the Republicans, who imposed the austerity agenda on the poor, with the support of the middle class. It was Bill Clinton who ended actual welfare aid for the very poor, and took the first steps to similarly "reform" Social Security, targeting the disabled. By 2000, the disabled had become the fastest-growing group of homeless Americans (they did quite poorly on the streets). Finally, President Obama was elected and restored Social Security, but the Dems in Congress promptly resumed cutting again. The last I heard, the Democrats were considering, or had already agreed to, cuts in disability aid that are twice as deep as those made by Clinton. We already know this will cost lives. The goal of the Clinton wing remains that of dismantling the New Deal.

  • 2016 is the Race Against Austerity.   10 years 10 weeks ago

America took a much smarter, more gradual approach to implementing the austerity agenda, from the bottom up. The success of this plan required re-educating the general public (starting by the early 1980s) to pit the middle class against the poor, workers against the jobless. This was successfully achieved. Right now, we're watching as the rich do to the middle class what the middle class already did to the poor, and there's nothing we can do about it.

    Concerning Hillary:

I knew Obama by his economic advisors -- a catastrophe!

    Same test for Hillary.

Second test -- where will she position re TPP?

She must take a stand against NOW or she's only marginally better than the Republican candidate.

Social issues must be matched by progressive economic positions or the plutocrats win.

  • Will misogyny against Hillary be worse than racism against Obama?   10 years 10 weeks ago

You don't get it Mr. Hartmann.

People wanted something different after GW Bush. They wanted to vote for somebody that clearly offered a fundamental departure from that which was suggested by the traits of past presidents. So they voted to change the President's race.

Now, after Obama has proven he is just as influenced by money, money, money as GW Bush, the People again find themselves unfullfilled and are seeking to identify something fundamentally different in their next President,... so they are going to vote to change the gender of the President and see if that doesn't do the trick. And ya know what? IT WON'T CHANGE ANYTHING, NADDA, JACKSHIT, ZIP....

If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times: Cash is a bigger determinant of the behavior exhibited by a sitting President than anything he or she says on the campaign trail or that which might be suggested by that Presidents race or gender. Let me repeat that, Cash is a bigger determinant of the behavior exhibited by a sitting President than anything he or she says on the campaign trail or that which might be suggested by that Presidents race or gender. Hillary - if she (the collasal parasite that she is) wins - will perpetuate the status quo of the 99% taking a back seat to money, money, money.

So, “misogyny” and “racism”?! Would you believe Obama and soon hillary’s performance may have played a role in it first? I know this probably isn’t obvious given where you sit in America’s the socio-economic landscape, but when Obama’s and soon (I fear) Hillary’s performance toward the People fail, People will get angry and when some People get angry they may turn toward THE RESPONSIBLE PARTY’s race and gender as a lightning rod for their anger. (People say shit that they shouldn't when their angry - which isn't to say that there are real misognists and racists out their that would cling to these ugly values no matter how much Hillary or Obama treated them like the powerful, heavily moneyed lobbyists that they fawn all over on a daily basis at the expense of the American People)

Yes, believe it or not, Obama and soon Hillary’s performance played a role in it – these Presidents of the Democratic Party failed the 99% more often than the 1% (just ask the lobbyists to the TPP). But, your needs are met Mr. Hartmann, you don’t see or experience Obama’s and soon Hillary’s failure toward the 99% quite the same way same way as the millions of American who’ve dropped out of the middle class and/or forced to scrimp by while the relatively rich appear unaffected.

I agree with Thom that the Republican program of austerity is a recipie for disaster, especially for the "have nots", also the world as a whole. However I doubt we would be any better off with Hillary. I urge all patriotic Americans who care to support Bernie Sanders. He seems the only voice of reason out there. I hope he runs, and as an Independent, or that he starts a new party. My suggestion for a party name is Patriotic Progressive Peoples Party.
