  • Show live from Green 960, San Francisco.
  • Article: "Spontaneous Uprising? Corporate Lobbyists Helping To Orchestrate Radical Anti-Obama Tea Party Protests by Lee Fang.
  • The crazies are out. House members are on vacation. The same organization as behind the "tea parties", Americans for Prosperity, and Freedom Works, right wing groups funded by corporations issuing memos about how to disrupt town halls. Dick Armey's groups.
  • Guest: Economist/Author/Columnist John Lott, Ph.D.. It is disingenuous for groups with purely economic interest to do this sort of thing on health care. America is below Cuba in infant mortality. He said there were a lot of legitimate concerns, but an ABC/Kaiser poll said lots of people were happy with their health care, compare with Canada, similar. New York Times/CBS poll asked if people wanted a public option, 50% said yes, that rose to 80% if it was explained. He said the problem with the New York Times/CBS poll was that it had twice as many who voted for Obama than McCain. Similar Bush v Kerry, people say they voted for the winner. How could he justify the industry manipulating him? He said the biggest health businesses want the Obama plan, the paperwork is often contracted out. There are 5 bills so far.

  • Is racism a psychosis? Do they construct an alternate reality? It goes a step beyond that. They have a real reality which is that they're not getting good health care right now, they're worried about that. If they lose their job, they are one pay check away from disaster. They are one serious illness away from disaster. They all understand that. They think somehow, they are being told that the Democrats are going to make it worse. What we saw in Germany in the '30s, what we've seen in nationalist movements all over the world, in America in the 1960s with race, is that when people are insecure, people are nervous, demagogues will come along and say it's a 'them' out there who is responsible for your problems. Whether the 'them' is African Americans or Jews or liberals, this is how the right wing talk radio has made their chops for the last 20 years. There's a 'them' out there; it's liberals. And the promotion of the 'them' is what creates that mass hysteria which is the flare-ups of racism.

'Have you noticed that healthcare reform is being promoted by a black guy who is president?' - the birther movement. 'Oh my God, he wants to give it to the illegal aliens who have brown skin!" - the Lou Dobbs message. It's not just all about race. Race is the symptom of the insecurity, the fear that people are feeling in the United States justifiably. They just don't realize that it's 30 years of Reaganomics that has destroyed the economic structure of this country, and so they are looking for some 'them' to blame. And now you've got these guys coming along saying, 'yeah, we'll give you a 'them'. The 'them' is Congress, go yell at them. In fact, here's how to yell at them' They are even organizing buses to take people to these Congressional meetings. They are meeting before the meetings to plan strategies. That's how organized this is.

Single payer will save us a fortune.

  • IS IT MURDER WHEN RELIGION REPLACES MEDICINE FOR MINOR CHILDREN?
  • Article: "Wis. jury: Father guilty in prayer death case By Robert Imrie.
  • Article: "Judge rules family can't refuse chemo for boy (AP).
  • Article: "Mom acquitted, father guilty on one charge in faith-healing case By Matthew Graham.
  • Article: "Refusing a C-Section, Losing Custody of a Baby By Lisa Belkin.
  • Guest: Chief/Dr. Phillip Cloudpiler Landis, elected Principle Medicine Chief of the Nemenhah Band and Native American Traditional Organization, discusses religion as medicine instead of modern medicine with Thom. The band does not have a policy about individual use of medicine, and the family did not ask the opinion of the band, and went to a doctor. The doctors pulled Danny off his first chemo early because it was killing him with blood clotting, and it happened again when he was ordered by judge to take it. Should the state have the right? He does not believe in doing the most harmful thing first. Danny's tumors were shrinking anyway. The Portland cases crossed the line. God helps the doctors. The slippery slope is who is the 'we' to help them recalibrate their religion. How far will they go? Vaccinations. In court doctors could not agree on how treatable it was.
  • Article: With Insurance Policy Comes Membership: Unbeknown to Some, Those Signing Up With Firm Are Joining Conservative Group By Jonathan Weisman, July 23, 2006.
"In 2001, Jennifer B. Chace heard an insurance broker's pitch for a new insurance company marketing tax-free medical savings accounts. She jumped at the offer, but first, the broker told her, she would have to sign an application -- already filled out -- that would entitle her to a low group rate.

With that signature, Chace, a Florida dentist in the market for health insurance, unwittingly joined one of Washington's most prominent conservative organizations, Citizens for a Sound Economy, she would later testify. ...

Citizens for a Sound Economy -- now called FreedomWorks and headed by former House majority leader Richard K. Armey (R-Tex.) -- has netted more than $638,000 and about 16,000 members through the sale of insurance policies.

  • OBAMA'S DOCTOR AND HIS HEALTH CARE PLAN
  • Guest: Dr. David Scheiner, Obama’s doctor from 1987 until he entered the White House, gives us his diagnosis. He's a member of Physicians for a National Health Program. Thom was speaker at a PNHP conference years ago in San Francisco. It was a tactical error giving directions to Congress, they are influenced. It preserves private insurance as the main payer, they cannot be controlled, their motive is not quality care. The profit motive. They will find other ways to scam the system, paperwork will not be abated, it is a no-brainer. Malpractice insurance was 25% of his practice's costs. Nobody is going into primary care. In the White House the president gets a career military doctor full time. He has not talked with Obama about it. Quentin Young was his partner for years. PNHP are trying to get the message out. They have 16,000 physicians. If primary care physicians got organized they would have power. Medicaid: most physicians are paid poorly and late. Medicare works, Medicaid does not, because of funding. • WILL A PUBLIC OPTION LEAD TO SINGLE-PAYER HEALTHCARE?
  • Martha Kuhl, Vice President of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, and an Oakland CA Registered Nurse specializing in pediatric oncology, discusses anniversary of medicare and the need for healthcare reform...single payer system. Thy are putting much of their hope on Dennis Kucinich's ERISA state amendment, he was on the show. Is that the best we can do? Obama and Congress have refused to consider Medicare for all. Twice California put forward single payer, vetoed by the governor, if not vetoed may have fallen foul of ERISA. Transcript.
  • Thom may be on Bill O'Reilly's show tonight.
  • Arlen Specter's town hall. Thom has never seen anything this organized. "try to rattle him, not have an actual debate". Page 21/22 risk capitalized. The "Please cut the crap" rebuttal should be at the top of whitehoue.gov and they should out the people pushing these lies.
  • Article: "Deconstructing the Right Wing Lies on the Health Insurance Bill Please Cut the Crap.
  • Bumper Music: Democracy is coming to the USA, Leonard Cohen.
  • Victoria Jones of Talk Radio News. Politicians bushwhacked by right wingers. Robert McGuffy memo, his site. How will it be reported during August? Telling seniors Obama health care plan means death. Tea parties. One senator was chased by a crowd. Populism exploding because of the economy. Cash for clunkers, Gibbs confident of renewal, but they may take it up later in week, the money is running out now, no guarantee it will get through Senate. Some say they will filibuster. They would have to get the house back, or delay until September. Given the town halls, they may be happy to come back.
