Suicide
As a Catholic I have been taught that to commit suicide is a mortal sin and the soul is damned for eternity. This teaching is clear and concise. There should be no problem with the issue of suicide.
An American soldier committed suicide because he refused to torture Iraqi prisoners. As a human being I would not damn this soldier’s soul for all eternity. I am not God and I will have no say in this soldier’s soul and the destiny of his soul. The American soldier in my opinion with his refusal to torture Iraqi prisoners was practicing the Golden Rule and he was obeying the Eleventh Commandment. I look upon this soldier as a true Christian.
The judgment of his soul is in God’s hands.
We have many issues before us that are not clear and concise. There are many issues that have factors, situations, and variables to make our judgment of another person very difficult.

The American right are socialists in one area. Yes, the conservatives are really socialists.

Re: Suicide
A Minister friend of mine to me the story of when a member of the congregation approached him, and told him that another lady told her that her son was burning in hell because he committed suicide. He asked her if, given the choice, would she condemn her Son to hell for committing suicide? She replied, Oh No! My son was depressed and despondent! My minister friend then told her, then why do you think that God would be less compassionate?
Do we humans have more compassion than God? If so, then what does that have to say about your God? Perhaps the Catholic God is less compassionate. On the other hand, My God is very compassionate!

We should all be Anti-Colonial Kenyans!
Think about it you Newt...If you don't identify with an anti-colonial Kenyan world view, you must support the converse. So apparently Newt is an advocate for the precepts of the British colonial adventure in Kenya. Which, by the by, systematically disempowered Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and arguably parts of Somalia and Ethiopia, by undermining their agricultural productivity, deforesting the landscape to relocate resources to enrich England, promoted the subversion of cultural and religious beliefs that pre-date Christanity, and led an entire race of people to question their self worth.
What Newt and others like him fail to understand is summed up by Kenyan author Ngugi wa Thinong'o in his text, Writers in Politics:
"It is time we realized that the European bourgeois experience of history as reflected in their art and literature is not the universal experience of history. Moreover, their history has largely been one of exploitation, oppression and elimination of other peoples" (31).
Newt's "knowledge" of the system is also at play in the process of exploiting the working class, Ngugi writes,
"Racism and racist theories have been effectively used by the ruling Euro-American minority to divide the working majority - Afro-American, Euro-American, Asio-American - by bribing the Euro-American working class with comfortable tidbits of the loot cruelly robbed from the Afto-American workers, and also feeding the Euro-American worker with spurious fascist notions of racial superiority, and the Afro-American worker with equally spurious notions of racial inferiority" (39).
Newt is playing the same old game of divide and conquer.

@DRichards, my God is a compassionate God. I brought out the issue on suicide for discussion. On Thom's blog for September 17, 2010 I brought out issues on masturbtion for discussion. I also mentioned obesity. Judgment in the end will depend on God. I pray for a merciful God to judge me. Let me also say that I have seen major changes in Catholic teaching since my K-12 Catholic education. A Mass is now permitted for persons who have committed suicide. Christine O'Donnell is hoping to win political office on the wedge issue of masturbation. My hope was to challenge her nonsense on the issue of masturbation as a clear and concise wedge issue.

We should pray for Newt.
Newt, and other western "intellectuals" like him are victims of the grand narrative...the lie that all positive "evolutionary" inovation in human civilization originated in Europe.
In Writers in Politics, Ngugi continues to explain that the concept that Europe is the center of the universe is really,
"cultural imperialism, a very powerful insturment of oppression since it distorts a people's vision of their place in history and of the reality of the world around them. These distorted literary reflections, often reinforced by religious images of a White God the Father, a White God, the Son and Saviour, and a White God, the Holy Spirit, with a band of white angels singing in heaven while black devils writhe in hell literally paying for their black sins, were meant to lead us, and especially the educated and the christianized along paths of self-doubt and self-hatred to indecisive postures before our enemies" (30-31).
Newt is similarly a victim of the history of western cultural imperialism, and is in a way much like Ngugi as a child, living under a colonial empire set on undermining his entire existance. In his Decolonizing the Mind, Ngugi explains,
"African children who encountered literature in colonial schools and universities were thus experienceing the world as defined and reflected in the European experience of history. Their entire way of looking at the world, even the world of the immediate environment, was Eurocentric. Europe was the centre of the universe. The earth moved around the European intellectual scholarly axis. The images children encountered in literature were reinforced by their study of geography and history, science and technology where Europe was, once again, the centre" (93).
So, you see, Newt is a victim with a child's mind, intellectaully incapable of recognizing the fasle notions to which he bears witness in the public arena.

For the record...
Even in the era of the twit, spelling matters...with names at least:
Ngugi wa Thiong'o
Re: My God is a compassionate God
Gerald
My apologies if I was not clear; I was not saying this was "your" God, but was using "your" in a general sense. Perhaps I should have said "our". It seemed clear to me that you were referring to the Catholic God, in light of their teaching.
God may not change, but man made religion does. Fortunately, in this case (suicide) for the better (in view of a more compassionate God).
Since it seems as though that most independent and republican voters can only handle simple messages. So what I don’t understand is why the campaigns are not pointing out and framing the debate more simply. The republicans are threatening to shut down government. So why are these people running for office not running around screaming that republicans want to starve grandma, and throw you’re unemployed neighbors out of their houses and make them homeless which will intern drive down home prices. Which all are true! Why can’t we get aggressive? Our future as a nation depends on it!

Just seeing if this still works.

It does!!! Wow I look GREAT!!!!

To deny all morality is to be moral
To deny all morality is to be moral, for the accepted morality is the morality of respectability, and I'm afraid we all crave to be respected - which is to be recognised as good citizens in a rotten society. Respectability is very profitable and ensures you a good job and a steady income. The accepted morality of greed, envy and hate is the way of the establishment. When you totally deny all this, not with your lips but with your heart, then you are really moral. For this morality springs out of love and not out of any motive of profit, of achievement, of place in the hierarchy. There cannot be this love if you belong to a society in which you want to find fame, recognition, a position. Since there is no love in this, its morality is immorality. When you deny all this from the very bottom of your heart, then there is a virtue that is encompassed by love. --- J. Krishnamurti
