An Appeal from Thom Hartmann

Dear Friend,

I’m writing you today because the network on which my show airs, Free Speech TV, is only a few days away from the end of its fiscal year.

They have to raise $65,000 in order to be in a solid financial position for the rest of 2015. This is a crucial time for them during the year because the funds they have heading into the new fiscal year will determine what documentaries, programs, and special events they are going to be able to bring to you over the next 12 months.

Free Speech TV has been a loyal partner of mine for some time now and I am an ardent supporter of their programming, and you should be too.

Their programming director, Alexander, is waiting to find out what their budget is going to be, and, Caroline, the documentary acquisitions manager is waiting to find out if she can buy the rights to air some of the most ground breaking documentaries of the year.

So, in these last few days of the fiscal year, please give what you can and help to ensure that an independent progressive television network has a leg up as we move into a critical election year.

Your support means that I get to stay on the air. It would mean that you get to continue to watching some of the other amazing programming that they air--such as Democracy Now!, Ring of Fire with Mike Papantonio, The Stephanie Miller Show, and a vast selection of incredible documentaries created by passionate independent filmmakers and producers.

If you give in the next 24 hours, a generous donor has offered to match your donation dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000.

Here is a message from our matching grantor:

It's time to stand up and be counted. Free Speech TV is accurate and real information. People need to be able to think critically about what 'we the people' need to do to change the present status quo. Free Speech TV is the stimulus for developing the think tank for the people who are not the status quo. If you are a critical thinker this is your time to make a difference. I am rising to make that difference by making a $5000 matching grant. Every dollar you donate will be officially doubled by this gift. It is my hope that this amount will be matched by you. Join me and get involved NOW in Free Speech TV!

So please, turn this $5,000 matching grant into a $10,000 boost for the network.

Yours sincerely,

Thom Hartmann

The Thom Hartmann Program

P.S. Thank you to everyone who called in and made donations to honor and share their heartfelt condolences to the staff of Free Speech TV as they mourn the tragic and unexpected death of Development Director, Jason McKain.

Thanks for the reminder Thom, just donated.

If you have time to actually read this...I called re. ACA today and there wasn't time to make my case and Shano didn't have a mic. For years, the LGBT community has looked at the law of civil marriage and the 14th amend. & felt denied of equal protection of the law. SCOTUS just ruled in our favor. With regard to a class of people, how do federal laws regarding civil marriage pertain to all LGBT people across the states whereas the laws pertaining to the ACA do not pertain to all poor people across the states under the equal protection clause, particularly when it specificly says; "no state shall deny equal protection of the laws"? My sister lives in NC and I can assure you she is denied equal protection! If Shano could explain this on a future program, it would be most helpful..thanks

Want more jobs? Think about this.
The tax code can change incentives. Tax codes are social engineering they encourage some things and discourage other things.

In many cases we raise taxes on things that we think are socially destructive (cigarettes and alcohol) and we remove taxes from things we think are good for society (churches and charitable organizations.) Jobs are good for society but we tax them heavily. We should try to remove all of the economic penalties (taxes) from labor.

On the other hand:

If a person does work, they and their employer pay several taxes. If a machine does the work it pays none. When a machine does the work of 10 people then it could be taxed at the same amount that 10 people would be taxed. That would be fair . . . right?

With this system The tax rate could be much lower and I don’t think we would be lacking for jobs. If we have enough "people jobs" available, then the discrepancy in income should be less and a minimum wage might not be necessary.

Workers were responsible for making these labor saving devices (machines).
These devices will replace workers forever. Shouldn't there be some compensation that the machines and their owners, pay back to the workers.

Wouldn't it be reasonable for the machines to at least pay the taxes that would have paid by the workers and employers.

I make a monthly contribution to FSTV - this is a good way to donate because it is a reliable income stream and diminishes the need to have fund raising segments as often. I encourage all Thom Hartmann fans to donate monthly for the special gift he gives on a daily basis!

From Screwed:
"I think many of us recognize that for all but the wealthiest, life in America is getting increasingly hard. Screwed explores why, showing how this is no accidental process, but rather the product of conscious political choices, choices we can change with enough courage and commitment. Like all of Thom’s great work, it helps show us the way forward."
Paul Loeb, author of Soul of a Citizen and The Impossible Will Take a Little While
From Cracking the Code:
"No one communicates more thoughtfully or effectively on the radio airwaves than Thom Hartmann. He gets inside the arguments and helps people to think them through—to understand how to respond when they’re talking about public issues with coworkers, neighbors, and friends. This book explores some of the key perspectives behind his approach, teaching us not just how to find the facts, but to talk about what they mean in a way that people will hear."
