Democrats Should Steal Trump's Thunder on Trade

It's time to run bigger, better and harder on trade policies.

There's an old saying that even a broken clock is right twice a day. In that spirit, Donald Trump and his advisors are at least partly right about trade and tariffs.

Ironically, he's totally defying the entire Republican Party, as well as the Bill Clinton-corporate wing of the Democratic Party, and running with policies that progressive Democrats have been pushing for a century.

While most progressive politicians will admit Trump is right on trade (and several have on my radio/TV show), there aren't a lot of Democrats these days willing to enthusiastically acknowledge Trump might be right about anything so they're not much popping up on network or cable TV.

Which is unfortunate: the Democratic Party should return to its progressive/protectionist/union roots and steal this issue right from Trump's teeth, saying that he's not doing it well enough or fast enough. They should run hard in 2020 on Bernie's suggestion that we use protectionist policies to end our trade deficits and bring back home our jobs.

The disastrous trade deficits we've been running since the Reagan era are damaging to the future of America for a variety of reasons, from national security to where the profits from American companies end up, to the flattening of American working wages and benefits.

All you guys can come up with is that you don't like Trump the person. Well, join the club. But so what? As I had a Trump voter tell me before the election, he was voting for a president, not a pope,

Is the economy good or bad? Has he started any new armed conflicts? Has there been massive layoffs and unemployment? For all his bluster about immigration, have there been mass deportations of illegals? How is Silicon Valley, and the tech sector, doing?

Come on...tell us how the country is now worse off. Specifics and actuals please, and this does not require a google search.

Lets see, we have been jockeying back and forth with Iran since the 50's. The national debt has been piling up for at least the last 18 years, if not longer. Thanks Bush and Obama.

If you don't like his judicial or cabinet picks, then the solution is very simple. The democrats should nominate someone who can win the presidency. They did not do that in 2016. And frankly, I'm not sure who will emerge in 2020 that has a chance of winning at this point. An identity politics idealogue will fare no better in 2020 than Hillary.

On topic again....One hundred comments or so back I tried to point out that support for better trade policies starts by voting for the party that will actually implement them. Sure there are misguided Dems, but voting for the Koch Party equates to a zero percent chance of reversing free trade policies.

This is one of many issues where Kochpublican propaganda has hoodwinked the populous into voting against their own best interests time and time again. To say you're against free trade on this blog and then turn around and vote for the party of free trade is just ludicrous.

For example anti -american McConnell filibustered bills introduced by Dems that would have ended tax breaks for companies shipping jobs overseas. Until Joe and Jill voter hear this over and over again , we lose the battle.

It sure would be nice to stop filling all those swimming pools in La...Hollywood...and Silicone Valley with our water while we put out signs every year saying if it's yellow it mellow if it's brown flush it down. SF wasted more water with broken main pipes than we could save by counting every drop. We live on wells so when they go empty we have to buy water in tank trunks. We cut back on Showers while So. ca. fills there pools, and we are the rainforest of Ca. All politics of course.

Off topic: Now and then I hear Thom downplay Russiagate. I understand his feelings and actually agree with him about the danger of hype and distraction from bigger problems facing us.

There is another side to this that is extremely dangerous and that most are unaware of. I'll do my best to explain..... First of all, we still don't know how much the Republican Party was involved with the Russians in this. Even if the collusion was minimal and didn't impact the election to a great extent, the real danger is in getting away with it. Doesn't the reaction from the party that benefited from this foreign intervention horrify you? Look what the Koch GOP house investigation just came out with. In addition the polls show that Republican voters care very little about what Putin/Russians did.

If they get away with it this time, it will only get worse, and the Republicans will walk away blameless every election despite how obvious the meddling is. Hey it wasn't us...it was those damn Russians. We allowed it this time with Trump illegit as hell based on all kinds of election engineering, and now look where we're headed.

Putin hates democracy and denies it to his own people much like Trump and the Kochs will here if they can get away with it. I love the Russian people but hate the way they're being treated by Putin's regime.

Do they think the Russians elected President Trump?

Did the Russians hate Hillary Clinton more than the American public?

Should America have good relations with Russia or not?

My final answer on this because dealing with someone who is so stubborn makes this very difficult and a waste of both of our times.

From what I understand,

SS is funded by working people with income up to a about $128,000 taxed at 6.2% matched by 6.2% from your employer. Beyond that number only Medicare taxes are still taken out forever regardless of income. An individual has their payout benefits capped at a about $2800/mo. at full retirement depending on earnings.

Leftie/socialists keep harping on the fact SS should continue to be withdrawn from paychecks regardless of income. I actually understand that.

Leftie/socialists forget to mention that action would result in much higher SS payouts to those "rich" come their retirement, so instead of $28000/mo it would be possible for one to receive $28,000/mo. or in some extreme cases maybe $280,000/mo. depending on earnings.

In my world this is an equal pay in, equal pay out program.

Now I expect your typical leftie/socialist to just say screw them and cap them at $2800/mo. regardless and make them continue to pay in at the 12.4% rate without any increase in benefits.

To that I say fuck you!! In fact make that, FUCK YOU twice, only louder the second time

but,

Don't believe me, listen to your experts like Thom and Bernie who repeatedly spout,, "SS is doing just fine thank you very much and it's backed by the full faith and credit of the United States of America."
