Hartmann - Fox News Doesn't Know Jack about Economics or Food Stamps

It's time to stop taking advice from Gretchen Carlson - Brian Kilmeade - and "Socialist-obsession" Eric Bolling over at Fox so-called News - and start taking our economic advice from lessons learned in history. Lessons learned from the Great Depression when Franklin Roosevelt helped poor people get back on their feet again by stimulating the economy and took unemployment from over 25 percent to just 14 percent in only three short years. We need to kick the supply-side economics hucksters out of Congress - and out of the media - and get back to the basics of economics - making sure people have enough money to spend to meet their basic needs - and not making sure billionaires have enough money in their Swiss Bank Accounts.

Hartmann - The latest slap in the face to 9/11 first responders

John Devlin & Ken George, 9/11 first responders. Next month - our nation will honor the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Like previous years - there will be a special ceremony at Ground Zero in New York City - but this time - some people are not invited - the 9/11 first responders. This week - Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office confirmed that 9/11 first responders are not invited to the ceremony - and that the ceremony is specifically for the families of victims of 9/11. The statement from the mayor's office read, "While we are again focused on accommodating victims' family members, given the space constraints, we're working to find ways to recognize and honor first responders, and other groups, at different places and times." John Feal - the founder of an advocacy group for 9/11 first responders reacted to the Mayor's statement saying, "The best of the best that this country offered 10 years ago are being neglected and denied their rightful place." Of course - this is just the latest slap in the face to 9/11 first responders. At the end of last year - Republicans finally dropped their filibuster against the James Zadroga Act which gave medical care 9/11 first responders who are now dying from the toxic debris they inhaled while working for months at ground zero recovering bodies at the site. Yet - just last month - the responders discovered a catch in the bill - that disqualifies them from receiving any medical care assistance for cancer cases - since ...

Hartmann - Geeky Science - The Ultimate Spy tool

The journal Science is reporting this week that a super thin electronic patch that sticks to the skin like a temporary tattoo could transform medical sensing, computer gaming and even spy operations. The micro-electronics technology - called an epidermal electronic system or EES - was developed by an international team of researchers from the United States, China and Singapore. One of the creators - Professor John Rogers from the University of Illinois has said that EES eliminates the "distinction between electronics and biology" because it "integrates with the skin in a way that is mechanically and physiologically invisible to the user." In test studies the patch was used instead of bulky electrodes to monitor brain, heart and muscle tissue activity and users who had it on their throat operated a voice-activated video game with more than 90 percent accuracy. The wireless device is nearly weightless and requires so little power it can fuel itself with miniature solar collectors or by picking up electromagnetic radiation. Less than 50-microns thick - the device is thinner than a human hair and as soft as human skin and it can stick to the skin without any glue or sticky material. In fact - EES uses a molecular force known as "van der Waals interactions" to create adhesion between the patch and human skin on the molecular level. Scientists have spent six years developing this technology and they believe that EES might find future medical uses in patients with sleep apnea ...

Hartmann - What happened to "compassionate" conservatism?

Erikka Knuti, Democratic Strategist joins Thom Hartmann. There's a disturbing increase in the number of children living in poverty in America while at the same time Republicans are working feverishing to CUT programs aimed to helping those very same needy children! So what happened to so-called "compassionate" conservativism?

Hartmann - Caught? Fake conservative identities re-writing the web?

Lee Fang, Think Progress joins Thom Hartmann. Thom noticed for years that people have been going into his message boards - particularly around the time of elections - and posting right-wing propaganda - and one guy ADMITTED that he's being paid by Conservative organizations to do this. But it appears that the Chamber of Commerce may be up to something much more nefarious using fake internet identities. Earlier this year - ThinkProgress obtained hacked emails from the defense contractor HB Gary Federal - that suggest that - with the help of other security firms - HBGF was working with the Chamber of Commerce to sabotage Progressive organizations like ThinkProgress and the union SEIU. It appears their strategy was to use fake online personas - complete with fake Twitter - Facebook - and Linked-in accounts - to infiltrate and gather private data and intimidate people who work for organizations critical of the Chamber of Commerce. For example - meet Holly Weber - born in 1984 - attended Reynold High School - worked for Lockheed Martin - served time in the Air Forice and...is completely made up. Holly Weber is not real - she's one of the fake online personas created by HB Gary Federal. And it looks like the guy who created so-called Holly Weber - an executive at Gary Federal - Aaron Barr - apparently drew his inspiration from Maxim magainze - and this model whose name IS ACTUALLY Holly Weber - and WAS ACTUALLY born in 1984. So...what is going on here?

Hartmann - The cover-up of high crimes on Wall Street?

Lee Fang, Think Progress joins Thom Hartmann. Wondering why no banksters have gone to jail yet for their 2008 crimes on Wall Street? Maybe it's because the regulators in charge of policing Wall Street are busy shredding the evidence.

Hartmann - Prof. Richard Wolff Lashes out at the Haves & Have Mores

Prof. Richard Wolff, New School University NYC joins Thom. It's been one hell of a roller coaster ride on Wall Street! Wary of the shakiness in the US and European economies - investors are pulling their cash causing the markets to plummet up and down! So is there any hope for the market stabilizing?

Full Show - 8/17/11. Republican Candidates...Playing the Field

Thom discusses the recent crazy antics of the Republican presidential candidates, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney. Later in the program, he debates Rick Perry's fate in the run for the White House with his conservative guest panelists in the "Lone Liberal" rumble.

Hartmann: Does big tobacco have the RIGHT to lie?

Imagine there's an industry that sells a product that kills 1200 people every single day. And that's not because 1200 people misuse the product - but because the product ACTUALLY causes death when it's used as directed. Now imagine this industry has been given free reign to sell their product for decades - killing more people around the nation every decade than have died in all our wars from the Revolutionary War in 1776 to World War II to Vietnam and Afghanistan - combined. There's a lot of risk just in that. But then they doubled down - when Congress asked the CEOs of the corporations that make this industry to testify about just how destructive their product is - they lie right through their teeth. You see, corporate law has evolved over the years to the point where there's virtually no risk to CEOs or stockholders, even when their company or product kills people - and even when they lie about it. Of course! Corporations are people - and as people, they have the First Amendment right to free speech! Move to Amend.org - and supporting a constitutional amendment that once and for all says - corporations are NOT people. Let's let ACTUAL people decide what products are safe - and not Big Tobacco CEOs.

Hartmann - Fukushima...is this the China Syndrome?

Paul Gunter, Beyond Nuclear joins Thom Hartmann. Meanwhile, Japan is not out of the danger zone...in fact the nuclear crisis is getting worse and worse! We've recently learned from Japan that the amount of radiation released was more than 20 times that from the Hiroshima bomb, and now it looks they may be experiencing the early stages of a total China Syndrome meltdown. And is the United States in danger too?
