How To Turn Our Oligarchy Back Into Democracy?

After two Republican and two Democratic gun control bills failed to pass the Senate yesterday - one thing is abundantly clear. If we want real gun control - we need to get money out of politics.

Is the FBI Creating Terrorism? Progressive Roundtable

Sarah Badawi, Progressive Change Campaign Committee(PCCC) & Max Blumenthal, Alternet/The 51 Day War-Ruin and Resistance in Gaza both join Thom. new evidence shows that in 2013 when Mateen threatened a courthouse deputy by claiming that he could order Al Qaeda operatives to kill the deputy's family - the FBI responded by dispatching an informant to "lure Omar into some kind of act" The FBI informant couldn't convince Omar to take action in 2013 - and the attempted sting also didn't stop Mateen from killing 49 people l st weekend. Mateen is not an isolated case - according to Trevor Aaronson - author of "Terror Factory: Inside the FBI's Manufactured War on Terror" - nearly half of terror cases between September 11 2001 and 2010 involved informants - including some with criminal backgrounds. Former FBI agent Coleen Rowley told Alternet that "In the case of Mateen, since he already worked for a security contractor, he was either too savvy to bite on the pitch or he may have even become indignant that he was targeted in that fashion. These pitches and use of people can backfire.” And that should raise alarms. While the mainstream media has been focusing on the notion that Mateen may have been mentally ill - that he shouldn't have been able to buy a gun if he was on the no-fly list - that he may have been a gay-hating gay - this revelation shows another possibility. The FBI could, inadvertently, play a role in fostering radicalization with these failed undercover stings.

Will the Banksters Keep Warren Off the Ticket? Progressive Roundtable

Sarah Badawi, Progressive Change Campaign Committee(PCCC) & Max Blumenthal, Alternet/The 51 Day War-Ruin and Resistance in Gaza both join Thom. According to unnamed Democratic donors and source familiar - Big Wall Street donors want to make sure that Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts stays off the Democratic ballot come November. One top Democratic donor told Politico - "If Clinton picked Warren, her whole base on Wall Street would leave her. They would literally just say, 'We have no qualms with you moving left, we understand all the things you've had to do because of Bernie Sanders, but if you are going there with Warren, we just can't trust you, you've killed it." According to the Center for Responsive Politics - the securities and investment industry has already donated over 28 million dollars to the Clinton campaign so far. First - shouldn't this raise a whole lot of red flags about how beholden Hillary Clinton actually is to Wall Street? And second - is this a calculated risk that would be worth taking - to win progressive voters but lose the Wall Street money?

Is Trump the New Nixon?

Lamar Waldron, Watergate: The Hidden History: Nixon, The Mafia, and The CIA, joins Thom. the Republican establishment hasn't ruled out a convention revolt against "political outsider" Donald Trump. But the truth is Trump really isn't that different from Richard Nixon.

Could Basic Income Work?

Enno Schmidt, Basic Income Switzerland both join Thom. One of the unique features of democracy in Switzerland is the popular initiative system. It allows the Swiss people the chance to directly change their Constitution - as long as their proposal gets a minimum of 100,000 signatures of support. Once that happens - the plan goes up for a vote. This a powerful tool for activists because it gives them a chance to bring otherwise controversial ideas before the entire country. It doesn't guarantee victory - though - as supporters of universal basic income found out earlier this month. Their proposal to give each adult Swiss citizens a monthly income - perhaps as high as $2,500 - was voted down by a margin of 77 to 23 percent. That's a pretty brutal loss - but surprisingly - activists aren't giving up hope. In fact - they're downright bullish about the results.

Time To Get Rid Of the Second Amendment?

America’s gun violence problem has reached a breaking point, and while we can talk all we want about assault weapons bans, universal background checks, and terror watch lists, there’s only one real solution to this problem: We need to repeal the Second Amendment. That’s right -- we need to repeal the Second Amendment.
