Thom Hartman owns this blog, and can run as he sees fit. I like the changes. It may encourage creative thinking and new ideas. Anything to get a way for the name calling and blaming that has become so prevalent here.

frosty46 -- Very well put. Now for the hard part, how do we fix it?

I think the way to do it is to read the powell memo, and whatever it says do the opposite.

I think the most powerful tool would be to enforce the Sherman Antitrust law vigorously. Break up the media companies into very small pieces; then, put all colluders in jail.

Frosty, I couldn't have said it better.

WOW! We stupid Americans are ranked thirty something in healthcare stats and thirty first in internet speed yet pay insane prices for both----how's that for really stupid? Rightwing Republicans have kept our sick nation screwed for many decades and the citizens have been so cooperative all along the way. By means of ignorant religious views, dumb political views and just plain ol FEAR, the America people are so easy to game it's unbelieveable to the rest of the civilized world. I have been amazed by the ease with which the Rightwing controls it's US media outlets and through them the populous of stupids for many decades.

  • Will suing Obama help the GOP in November?   10 years 37 weeks ago

The GOP is trying way to hard to appeal the 10% of its most ideologically committed followers. They are quickly becoming a cult of true believers.

  • Another Unarmed Black Teen Shot by Militarized Police   10 years 37 weeks ago

There should never be a reason to shoot someone face down on the pavement like that if they are unarmed. Most of these beatings and murders by the cops are done while several cops have the suspect pinned down. It's just plain murder!!!

ginico55: But, actually Congress, both Dems (with a few exceptions) and Republicans, when they question people like the head of the NSA, they do so about as effectively as talking heads and reporters. Abby Martin had on her Russia Today, repeated again today from a previous show on June 4, 2014, two previous NSA whistleblowers, William Binney and Kirk Weibe. One of them, I believe it was William Binney, made the comment that when these people (like the head of the NSA) are questioned in Congress...they word their questions such that it gives the questionee the ability to evade actually answering the question. The questionee will say something like: "No, we do not spy on the American people in such and such program". The Congress person doesn't pin the questionee down with more specifics...they just let it slide. They could ask "Well, do you have any programs where you spy on the American people?" And then continue hammering them until they perjure themselves. Not that it would matter anyway because they have already shown that these people can outright lie and get away with it without punishment. So, what we see on the talking head shows we also see in Congress. It's all meant to put on a big show to make it look like these blowhards are doing something but what they are doing is evading the truth. And I think a lot of people just don't want to know the truth.

Just think, AIW, depending upon what options beyond basic you were paying for you saved a heck of a lot of money. I've been paying about $80/month for my Dish Network (with some extra movie channels) and I could have saved almost $7,000. I was visiting someone just this evening who had on some really stupid show on where they alternated between the interactions of customers in a pawn shop owned by a couple of Neanderthal Goobers that had the goofiest "duh" looks on their faces most of the time with something totally different (so dumb I can't even remember what it was). I probably get the same show but just always skipped over that kind of nonsense. I guess some people just eat it up. Yup, nothing more exciting than watching a couple of goobs, jaws wide open mouth-breathers and their elephantine witches of Eastwick employees haggling with some rabid escapees from some insane asylum. Many "customers" had to be picked up by this Giant "security guard" and thrown out of the store....they were so demanding and abusive. Instead of those so-called reality shows I prefer watching leftist news shows that challenge the current fascist regime.

The NAZIs used to just shoot people in the streets if they got flack from anyone..or they'd send them to the gas-chambers...we are part way there for sure.

Cold blooded murder pure and simple!

  • Should the Internet Be Like The Public Library?   10 years 37 weeks ago

    Yeah Thom, I'm hoping.

Frankly, I find this infuriating. Between five and ten times a day, our Frontier "high-speed" internet service gets so flaky that we have to shut down Safari and reboot the goddam "airport". So tiresome! You bet I'm hoping Rockport, Maine is starting a new trend; something in our best interests for a change!

Like I've said many times, everything we depend on that ends up in corporate hands just turns to shit. So what's next; the post office? Our water system? The fire department? Are those gonna be privatized too? What a load of shit. Hey, look what those hacks did to our healthcare system!! - Aliceinplunderland

After twenty-plus years of wanting to throw a brick through the TV, "ginico", I shit-canned cable. That was seven years ago. I've suffered no pangs of withdrawal and am rather proud to have kicked the habit. Everytime I catch a glimpse of TV in someone else's home, I can see I haven't missed a thing. Same old airbrushed pundits giving us the same old corporate fucking crap. Same old stupid, mindless game shows. Same old commercials advertising the same old toxic medications and processed "food", along with a menagerie of useless products. Hey, not on MY nickle! So "ginico", if you hardly watch it anymore, why not do likewise? Just fire the bastards. Look at all the money you'll save, not paying for the "privilege" of being lied to and annoyed on a daily basis!!

By the way, TV used to be free. I hate paying for anything that used to be free!

Palin, Marc- The distance between the lowest time stamp and the bottom of the page is such that I can see one OR the other; not both. And when I place my arrow over the time stamp, nothing happens except that it turns from blue to red; soon as I remove it, the stamp goes blue again. I’ve done EVERYTHING you’ve told me to do, and I get NOTHING. My husband says it’s because I’m using a different system; Mac laptop and Safari. This laptop is only a year & a half old; if that’s all it takes to be out of date, then OH WELL. Can’t afford a new computer every year!

That aside, all I need is a simple number identifying each post: #1, #2, #3… #14, #15, #16… etc. What in the hell am I supposed to do with something like “cdn3.thomhartmann.com/sites/default/files/IMG_0208_0.JPG” blah-blah-blah?!!! Even six-digit numbers are of no use to me; especially if they’re not in any kind of numerical order.

Sorry for being so bitchy. I know you guys are only trying to help, and I appreciate it. Really. But this new system just plain sucks.

Thanks so much for that link, Marc! This evening when I’ve got more time, I intend to make good use of it. - AIW

P.S. I don’t know why I should even bother hitting the “reply” button any more, since this crappy new format fails to identify what I’m replying to anyway!

  • Advice for Meet the Press   10 years 37 weeks ago

One only needs to read the comments on FB after the show to prove that you are right on. I think all of us have been ready to throw a brick at the TV when Gregory thinks that he is asking tough questions, that have already been answered and are now moot. I hardly watch it anymore.

  • It's Time for Big Business to show a little 'Economic Patriotism'   10 years 37 weeks ago

Aliceinwonderland ~ You have a reply from Nigel. He says that post numbers are on his "wish list" and they will get to them along with a long list of "other stuff." He also replied that--and I'm paraphrasing--that the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" rule was broken it was a necessary evil. We never would have made it out of the stone age without constantly upgrading stuff.

(He could have easily added that fixing things that aren't broken is the major part of his job. Now, he has lots of stuff to fix that is indeed broken. I believe he said "a gazillion things." At least, it all works out well for Nigel. Talk about job security!)

I barely get 30 MB/s from cox for 69$ a month. I would triple my speeds with no extra cost under Rockport's plan.

The internet should be open to everyone because it benefits everyone. The more people on the internet, the more commerce increases, and the more streamlined and efficient commerce becomes. It's a win-win. No monopoly should profit from strangling connection speeds as it now stands.

catman306 ~ Thanks for the heads up on that story. Unarmed and shot multiple times in the back while lying face down? You have got to be kidding me. This warrants a federal investigation. I'm tired of the rats guarding the cheese. I just don't trust a Police Chief or a District Attorney to investigate crimes occurring under their own jurisdiction. It's simply too damn likely that the orders to commit these crimes originated in one or both of these offices. I say, let the FBI take over this investigation and let the US Justice Department review and rule in it.

  • Should the Internet Be Like The Public Library?   10 years 37 weeks ago

I get just 2.43 Mbps for $44/mo. ATT can't even provide me with the 3.0 I think I'm paying for.

Competitionless crooks run America. And LOL, my spellchecker doesn't even recognize the word! Kind of like finding the word 'fascist' (lower case) in a main stream American publication during the Reagan years.

The LA Times, among many others, has a headline saying that Murdock has given up on buying Time-Warner. I think that means that Bill Maher is safe.

I'm not sure why Tim Russert get's the hagiographic, auld lang syne treatment by those who respect the 4th estate. The only follow-up questions I ever heard from him were "so you're really really NOT running for President in the fall?" and "who do you like in the Super Bowl?" That show has never been worth a squat.

  • It's Time for Big Business to show a little 'Economic Patriotism'   10 years 37 weeks ago

Aliceinwonderland ~ The double post problem is also an issue being discussed on the community thread. From what you've described I imagine that the issue is with your OS, platform, browser, or screen resolution. Not to worry. Like you've already suggested the little black box and the information contained within simply isn't worth the effort to see anyway. That information is relatively useless to you. Also, there are other ways to try to see it that I'm not even going to waste our time with.

All we can hope for is to put the pressure on Nigel on that comment blog that I see you've found. Bravo! These changes can take some time but I'm sure they will happen because after all we are not asking for the moon. We are only asking for the basic format conveniences that we've already grown accustomed to.

I notice you've said, "If it ain't broke don't fix it." A wise axiom that I get a lot in my own career. Well said, Alice! Well said! Inevitably, that course of action always leads to multiple new problems every single time.

Ohhh GREAT. With the old system, when I hit the "Save" button to post something, the button turned blue, which is how I knew it was working! Just now when I saw no visible response, I hit the button again and got two identical posts! Swell.
