I'd imagine that there is going to be much change in the study of economics over the coming years. I believe that if the working people ever find a leader who can organize and mobilize them, we will finally see the "super rich" as humanoid life forms. They appear to lack the same sense of reality that the greater part of humanity opperates within. They act, biologically speaking, like an incredibly effetive parasite that has effectively convinced it's host that the host must opperate for the benefit of the parasite and that this is in the host's best interest. This new economy for the 21st century will have to be one of local economies working for the benefit of neighbors in a new paradigm of co-operative economics; beyond barter. We will have to continue to educate ourselves on how to take control from the corporations without causing chaos and war. However, once anyone has studied even a little of the history of economics, the question becomes one of feasibility with respect to human "nature" as so well elaborated on by Adam Smith. We will have to evolve beyond the tendency to do what is best for the individual and learn to do what is best for the local community and, concomitantly, the world community.
Frankly, Thom, the days of robust economic growth are behind us. We have entered the post-growth era. Growth forecasts will continue to be trimmed. Some of the brightest financial minds are starting to write and talk about this - John Fullerton, Jeff Rubin, Paul B. Farrell and Jeremy Grantham come to mind. Read Richard Heinberg's book, The End of Growth.
Our goals and our metrics need to change. As you write, we want a healthy economy. Now, with the Earth full, a growing economy is not a healthy one. All along the laws of physics have told us perpetual economic growth on a finite planet was not in the cards. It's just hard to believe we are already at the limit. All the signs indicate we are.
So, while we need to have some healthy economic activity, it is going to be replacing dirty activities with clean, green activities, not adding MORE economic throughput. We need to stop looking for GDP growth. It's not a good indicator of living a good, meaningful life, anyway!

This is off the subject, but is anyone else, with a liberal view point, having trouble getting his/her comments posted on political or media sites on articles that slant toward Romney?
I have been trying all morning to post on the Baltimore Sun and LA Times.
I believe other sources will be checking and info will be available on the web and not be submerged. Still it's time this whole election juggling act was stopped entirely, that includes allowing 3rd parties. Those responsible need to go to their for-profit jails. Suppressing the peoples' voice..in my book...is not only a violation of civil and citizen rights, but attempts to subvert and undermine our system of government, our democracy, our way of life, and that equals treason!
All true, and not yet mentioning the Rove/Koch Machine that is dumping ballots in the millions, a clandestine war against the poor and minorities, leaving them "without no vote," as Woody Guthrie would have put it in "Mean Talking Blues."
One typo, here: "Why is it only Republicans are getting busted for election fraud."
It is actually the Republicans who should be getting busted for election fraud. Voter fraud is virtually non-existent. Election-rigging is rampant. But who is going to bust the Keystone Pipeline Kochs who lost their connections with Hugo Chavez? They are buying this faux-election.
But don't fear the Libertarian/John Birch/ Tea Party Kochs taking over and polluting our planet. They tell us that climate change is nothing to fear. We will adapt to the toxic planet. And global warming will help us grow more food.
And Hitler believed the universe was a block of ice and he was the messiah.

There was no debate. From my view, how can you debate a liar or liars? It’s impossible to list all those lies with counterpoint. Then to depend on recall of what was said or what was really meant or as Rush Limbaugh would say. Obama was really telling us “ @*7#! ”. No wonder the note taking. Who can Obama believe?
Romney was adjusted to the public and took the opportunity held open by the Moderator Jim Leher.Staring Quick Draw McGraw Romney the anthropomorphic Canary Island Dodo dimwitted loony tune billionaire. Now staring as presidential canidate as the oxy mormon of tax loopholes, severe conservative of money blackholes in secret bank accounts and bailout secrets. Watching some short interviews of billionares on cable I was totally turned off as to how ugly they really think, look and reason, how did those men attain billions leaves wonder me. Worse they those billionares are likely the follow up to America's new leadership. Yuke. My assumtion is if you like Romey those billionares are next in line. They know it and are rabidly foaming.
Romney is doing what I thought he would do in the final hours of the election, which is to embrace all of Obama’s key points. Those key points are successful so Romney needs to grab all he can in the final days. Lies are easy to generate. The media knows it. But the ultimate is that regardless of the lies deception and just plain made up stories the media still is leaning towards Romney as he picks away Obama key ideals. Obama’s camp knows that all topics brought forward will simply be stolen. So silence is golden.
If president Obama just walked around with his hands in his pocket, whistling “Singing in the Rain”, still, I would think he won, just by being there. :)
I agree futzin with the election is treason.. Then again so is starting a war based on lies. Subverting free elections is profoundly un-American.. Corporate money flooding into the all important swing states, and voter suppression targeting demographics likely to vote democratic, is transparently obviously election fraud.. The problem is corporate money has sabotaged the separation of powers, and took over the formerly free press, which are both important cornerstones in a free democracy.. So with no news in America, people don't know what's going on, and so there is no one to watch the lawmakers (should be the voters).. And somehow they got a lot of people to treat the GOP like a religion, and support everything they do (Because nothing the GOP does makes sense, unless you are the 1-percent). Even in nazi germany, the people supported hitler, even after they started gassing people by the millions. ill vote for Obama again, but I sure wish we had a real democrat to vote for (the last one was carter)..

President Obama would have had a far better and more productive First Term, had those wonderful, patriotic, elected people across the aisle (You know... the ones whose salaries, insurances, and pensions we cover with our hard-earned tax dollars, even if WE cannot afford to have medical insurance for our own families?!) agreed to step-up and let him be their President, too! And yet, our President has managed to do a great many good things for America, without them.
Now the culprits of anonymous holds, filibusters, and deceit will stoop to anything - even to disenfranchising legal voters, including some of the ones who are serving in the military and disabled in hospitals - to tip the votes to reflect a lie, because it might get their puppet elected. It's shameful; it's criminal; and this is why we must all demand our right to cast a vote, regardless of our chosen Party.
If President Obama is NOT elected for a 2nd Term, mark my words: We will find ourselves in another reckless war in Western Asia and the Middle East, which could lead to never seeing Peace again in the lifetimes of those of us who are old and wise enough to know better. Pity the young men and women whose lives will be lost during the next 20 years, and their grieving families, for they will be the ones who will suffer and die along with those who are just now beginning High School or Middle School. Only this time - in the next war - America won't be so lucky as to fight it only abroad... A 'just' war is one thing; a war fought for oil, pride, and to put more people back to work quickly for slave labor wages, will not be without terror and bloodshed at home.
Your show today gave me more insight in the mess we are in...also gave me hop. I was born in 1935,close to the 80 years cycle beginning. No polling eliminates another control looked for in othher countries when we were fair.
No Global, that's the lie. Obama's is not at all a failed presidency but last Wednesday's was truly a failed debate on his part. All he had to do was open his mouth and he would've easily trounced Romney. Romney was so facilly telling such glib and patent lies that ANYBODY could've just called him on it and it would've been all over for him.
You would've had to have knowledge on the issues to be able to recognize the lies, however, so only people like listeners to Thom's program would catch them. Most people in the U.S.don't have that kind of knowledge and, therefore, uncritically accept the lies as fact.
The President, for some reason, wasn't calling Romney on any of it. He did AFTER the debate but for some reason he wouldn't during the debate.
Both parties are committing Election fraud daily by engaging in Propaganda.
We now have our own online independent "media" sources, and exit polling provides essential check-data.
Futzin with elections should be the equivalent of Treason -- a capital offense. But will the Dems or Government hold anyone seriously accountable? Heads should roll. Think they will? LOL Fat chance. Both parties want their kick at the cat when they get their chance. It's one big happy circle-jerk with us suckers paying the tab.
My contention is to be a true patriot, is to inspire, encourage, and validate every citizen to cast their vote. Accept the outcome of a fair election, and to support the election results as a responsible citizen.
In regard to president Obama- I have been guilty of not supporting the president as well as I should have. I have come to realize the complexity of the job and further have come to the conclusion that I am proud of our president and all his efforts. I support him and recognize the enourmity of this assignment. One cannot expect change "Yes We Can " instantly in one term given the obstacles
to be overcome. I am proud of the job this really great man has done and I'm proud of our president.
We in America do not appreciate the gift we have been given with this man who has a heart and compassion for his people. It takes a good moral man before you can become a good president. We already know this about President Obama. What do we know about Mitt Romney. I rest my case. The outcome a a debate in which one republican candiate makes a mockery of the process with lies is not an indication of a debat. President Obama appeared pissed and I don't blame him.
How does one debate a chronic lier ?
True the vote members should be prosecuted for their illegal actions. I would love to see them go to jail to discourage others from stealing the vote of legitimate voters. They have so little support for their ideas that they see the only way they can win is to steal votes. What sick puppies they are.
Global, how can you call Obama a failed presidency, when he turned an economy from losing 700K jobs a month to one gaining 100K jobs a month. That statistic is even more amazing when you considers the record number of filibusters the obstructive strategy of the repugs?
There's an anti-Obama ad showing here in Colorado, which can be identified by the photo of Obama and Pelosi at the beginning and end, that says to read a "non-partisan report" on a certain website. But it says that the report is from the American Enterprise Institute, which is a right-wing think tank.
Is there any relation between the 19 states not having exit polling and the use of voting machines, or swing states?
No mystery, Obama has had a total failed presidency. It is hard to put a positive spin on that And it makes it very difficult to win a debate when you no positive material. His hope and change and divide act is tired and old.
Surprise, it's October!
Remember the day before the debate when Karl Rove and the Republicans were already gloating about winning it? They were saying that after the following night it'll be all over. Romney will have bounded right over Obama and pulled way ahead of him. He will be gone, we won't be able to touch him anymore. The election will be in his pocket.
We all thought they were crazy and sorry assed. Now I wonder what they knew that everybody else didn't. When we got to the debate the moderator was fudging everything for Romney and Obama was taking a dive.
First, I thought some of John Perkins' friends, the "economic hit men", might have paid Barack Obama a visit. Then, I thought it must've been a mental health issue. I thought Obama was pushed past his limit and was quitting. I thought we might have the fir suicide in the White House.
Now I think Karl Rove's got it fixed.
One thing's for sure, though. Obama was throwing away his presidential career that night. The only question is "why?".
He did it on many occasions. In the Republican Congress just after 9/11 an "economic stimulus" package waspassed and signed by W that gave tax breaks to corporations for their overseas operations. There are tax credits given to a corporation that operates overseas where they can deduct from their U.S. tax liability any taxes`they paid to a foreign government. There some other such breaks as well.
I haven't heard anyone in the news catch that Romney admitted to shipping jobs to China. When Obama mentioned that corporations can get a tax break for moving their opperations overseas, Romney gave a doubtful look and said that he has done a alot of business and never got a tax break for moving factories out of the US.
