Hard to answer this one--they are both true.
That is true in the current term. Next year, with both the House and the Senate probably in Republican hands, will be a different matter. They may not have veto-proof majorities then, but it's quite possible that they will dragoon enough Blue Dogs or just plain craven Democrats into siding with them.
If the local police or the local deputized sherif's minion, or the State Police or thr Governor's National Guard won't do it, they can always hire the Mafia or Blackwater to do it. They've done all those thing in our history before, including George Washington's leadin the militia to put down the protests against the bankers during his administration.
In this country, the republicans, in their wisdom; have allowed us peons to retain our weapons. So we won't be using machetes. But the time is coming.
They've did it before and with R & R possible it could/more than likely would happen again as we would loose all the gains we've made!
I doubt that we are. The UN should take action, and South Africa should be condemned. I doubt that would do much good but we should at least push them front and center.
Ditto re: Kent State. I was an undergraduate at Ohio Wesleyan Univ. when that happened, and I remember my English teacher, a very sweet older lady, breaking down as she tried to talk about it with the class. Then, since we were only about 80 mi. from Kent State, we absorbed several hundred of the kids when they closed Kent State after the student murders. Hearing and trying to support those poor folks who had actually seen the killings or, worse, had lost someone close to them, are what jump-started my lifelong dedication to political activism.
If the RomRy team gets in I doubt they would feel any compunction about having their minions shoot down anyone opposing them and their insane greed to "own it all". If they are already willing to rule out most Americans from health care, they are already willingly consigning untold thousands, if not millions, to preventable deaths and years of suffering. On a bright note, they ARE willing, as Ayn Rand avowed "Sefishists", to use their mothers, too, to gain their own ends. Or, was that, "They love their mothers, at least"?
I will never forget seeing the kids cut down at Kent State on the television. I was sick for days and wondered what kind of society would do this to their children. Unfortunately, over time, I forgot the lesson, because I wanted to believe that all we needed was love.
Having moved several months ago to the Great Northwest after over 30 years in Texas I was thrilled to find the progreesive station here, AM 1090, and hear thoughts, such as yours, that mirrored those I had thought for decades but rarely heard voiced. I love Texas, but there are a heck of a lot of bigotted, big mouthed idiots like Romney, who feel that they are entitled to whatever they want, no matter what it does to anyone else. Perry (hate to give him the title of governor) is such a marvelous example of this mind set and what years of hair dye and self admiring glances into mirroring surfaces can do to stultify brain processing, compassion, and clear thought. Thank God! that another GW is NOT being sent to D.C. by Texans who cared only that a Texan was going to be president.

If the US criminal elite manages to get Assange, Wikileaks will still live on, and Assange will be a Martyr for truth, honest and open news media, and keeping our leaders honest. Get Assange, and many others across the world will take his place. But let's not give up on Assange. Assange has put much of the other news media to shame. He had/has the balls to stands up for truth while most of the rest of the news media are wimps that will sell out truth for profit. I suspect that if "they" get Assange that several groups around the world, like Anonymous, will make life hell for any of the major organizations/corporations/government on the internet that have been proponents of "getting Assange". I suspect that many people in these major organizations will be moved to become "leakers" themselves and will reveal the criminal activities of these organizations. I suspect that leaders of these major organizations will have lots of things they have done, that they would not want anyone else to know about, will be exposed to the world.
It is going to take personal courage from each of us to thwart this if we want a world where honest people have rights and man is free to rise to greater heights than what is dictated to us by those with their hands on the guns that control us.
