I'm sorry but to me Columbus Day is another way for those who like to celebrate the "Theft & Colonization" by ancient Europeans. No wonder why many around the world, Love people from the U.S. or other caucasian lands, but Hate the governments that encourage such "Theft & Tyranny" of such lands.

Free gold Information kit, as advertised, in order to purchase space to publish an opinion contrary to an assumption that one can simply purchase a healthy environment. A strange situation in strange days.

Columbus is kind of like Santa Claus' evil twin, bringing slavery and disease to all the good little native boys and girls.

  • The Movement Marches on & so do the Banksters...   13 years 45 weeks ago

I wonder, how many banksters would have lost their homes if we allowed them to fail? Answer, many! So why are so many Americans being foreclosed on?

  • Happy Genocide Day!   13 years 45 weeks ago

    Thanks Thom,

For calling Columbus Day what it is - celebration of a genocide. I love giving my people time off the job but this is one holiday we won't celebrate. Make it a movement. Time people understand that re-casting villains as heros doesn't make them less villains. Coumbus murdered a race of people who welcomed him initially. May he rot in hell.

The truth must out. Thanks for your efforts.

I have done the first 2 and can do the third happy CD I agree with Thom

Parti: I identify all categories of Americanswho are genuinley suffering in our current economy. It turns out that there are 200 million of them

PartII: Identify $5.3Trillion in saves and REVENUES (without touching entitlement Programs)to help these 200 million by creating jobs, improving our infrasturcture, education, etc.

Partiii: Organize a tremoundeous groundswellof suport, lead by the very best amongst us, so that Amercia’s relevant legislatonwill be passed by congress or those who oppose it will be voted out of office

Okay.... I can't be the only one to see the irony of an arguably righteous rant on Columbus' 'psychopathic hunt for treasure' with directions to this blog right over "Free Gold Information Kit".

    I'm just sayin'......

Let me attempt to explain the mortgage crisis to you. Freddie and Fannie decided to "give" billions of dollars in mortgages to people without the means to pay them back. Mortgages were written, funding needed to be found for them. These mortgages (I'll call turds) were sent to Wall Street to sell. Wall Street had two choices, polish up these turds and sell them, or kick the new home owners out of their homes. Now Freddie and Fannie said Wall Street could not kick folks out of there homes. Wall Street had to sell the turds. Buyers of mortgages, given a choice of prime mortgages, (I'll call steak) and a polished turd, would always chose to buy the steak. No matter how hard the traders worked at polishing the turds, they wouldn't sell. Someone came up with the idea of making hamburger, mixing the steak with the polished turds. Only a small amount of the polished turd would be added to the steak, so no one will notice. Billions of dollars of this "hamburger" was sold. In 2008, the world wide economy began a correction, which occurs from time to time. This correction caused the number of turds mixed with the steak to increase incrementally. People with good mortgages were pulled down with the bad. The number of turds continued to grow, and would have collapsed the whole system without intervention. So you see, if Freddied and Fannie had not insisted on "giving" mortgages to those who couldn't pay, none of what followed would have occured. As far as hedge fund managers betting against the turd laced hamburger, that's what hedge fund managers do, try to limit risk.

Is all of this right, probably not. Freddie and Fannie shouldn't have forced Wall Street to sell the turds. When the turds didn't sell, it was wrong to mix the turds with the prime loans. However, Wall Street did it with a wink and nod from Freddie and Fannie, who pretended not to notice.

Hindsight is always 20-20. Mistakes were made, and yes people need to stand trial, especially those in the government who created this mess. Do I think this will happen? No. So what choice do we have but move forward. The system works.

  • Should Columbus Day be a federal holiday?   13 years 45 weeks ago

No, it should be replaced with a National Day of Atonement.

OK, Rich. I copied your website link and put it out on face book with a nice note to support one of the 99%.

I can empathize with you although I am not in your unfortunate position at this time, but I did lose a longtime job which was a culmination of mergers due to the trucking deregulation of the late 1970's, 1978 I think. I found myself in my mid 50's having to start over at 1/2 the pay I was used to. I almost lost my house, but again It was at least at a time when real estate was doing good in the 1990's. I did look at your website and would recommend that you put a facebook, twitter, etc. links on it so that people can easily recommend it. If it's not possible, since I have no idea how to do that myself, I wish you the best of luck. Welcome to the new world, although since you signed off with namaste, I would suspect that you know that better times are coming.

It's time to bring back the word DUMPING! For those new to the term, it's the act of exporting goods at prices (or in China's case artificially low currency values) that undercut the competition where they are sold to the point that all their competitors go out of business. It's what Wal-Mart has done to all the small town Main Streets. The term "Dumping" went out of style because it's been lobbied out of the lexicon by US-based corporations dumping Chinese made goods with brands we all recognize. China's strategy is long-term. They can afford to dump things here for a very long time. Long enough to put us all out of work. Dumping is a term with power and history behind it and that's why we need to bring it back.

I enjoyed you redoing your yearly rant on the actions of Chistropher Columbus. I agree with you. I think we should recant the holiday and get all the public workers that have the day off back to work. Given a choice I wonder if said workers could

    1. Go to work and reflect on the cruelty of Columbus over 500 years ago.

    or

    2. Stay home with pay and go to the mall

    Hummmmm

No one said that the "job" of Wall Street investors is to create jobs. No one says that they shouldn't make money. The inherent problem is that the system is set up so that they don't care if the stocks/ commodities that are OUR investment make money or not. i.e. the housing crisis started because bad mortgages were bundled together in attempt to guarantee their failure so that Wall Street could bet on them going belly up and making a profit. They devastated millions of lives to make a couple of bucks. There were no ramifications. No jail time, no loss of their job or house. They took a smaller bonus one year and then made it up in the years since with record profits which they have either sat on or rewarded companies that laid off workers or outsourced.. Then turn around and say that unless they get to keep their loopholes so that they can pocket more of the money they will invest even less. That unless they get less regulations they will continue to sit on their money. (the lack of which being the very thing that got us here in the first place). The only thing they DO invest in is politicians that will endorse their agenda. And as far as me and the rest of us creating jobs, I spend 98% of my total income in my local businesses. I'd like to see one of the major hedge fund managers do the same.

    See

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_Mutiny_of_1783 on why the Constitution allowed the creation of a capital district.

I can't defend any particular actions of Christopher Columbus, but the reason he (rather than Leif Erikson, for example) gets credit for discovering the New World, is simply that he was responsible for making Europe aware of it, although that point itself is probably debatable.

With reference to boycotting, or in some way standing up to, the consumption orgy of the Holidays... a discussion about this on my NPR talk show in 2001 led us to create the annual Abundance Swap, which averts yet more consumption while preserving the gifting element of the Holidays that a lot of us value. On Dec 11 we'll hold the 10th Annnual Abundance Swap in Ashland, Oregon. One great thing is that the idea has caught on in quite a few other communities across the country. We created a web page with very simple guidlines for starting the Swap in any community: www.abundanceswap.org.  Why not get with a few friends and start an A.S. in yours?

    Hi Thom,

I am just 1 in the crowd of people who love what you say, and I thank you for educating me. I lost my job of 25 years working with the mentally ill. Now three months past being a 99er. Now on food stamps. It is kind of funny to me that if you are on unemployment, you make too much money to qualify for food stamps. I don't have a Masters or Marriage Family Therapist License so do not qualify for any mental health jobs despite 25 years experience.. trying to start my own business doing wood work and stained glass but in NO WAY would I be eligible for a loan. Not even a small loan for this: www.artisanwoodandglass.com if you have a spare moment to take a look. I am fortunate to have a loving girlfriend who helps me out...

That is just my 2 cents.. Thank you again for your articulate education.. I would like to read one of your books and wondering if you can recommend one. I know you are very busy so if you can't then I will just google reviews and choose one that would be most applicable for my situation... How funny.. I am still listening to your show and you just mentioned 'STAR' wars, my dad worked on that many years ago @ Rockadine/Rockwell...

Anyway, sorry for babbling...if you get a spare moment to recommend a book of yours richsapf@gmail.com

At the Port Townsend Film Festival this year there was a movie called "Better This World" about two kids from Midlan TX who's small group got infiltrated by a so-called revolutionary, an FBI informant, who entrapped them during the 2008 Republican National Convention. He convinced them to build some homemade bombs, which they had no intension of using, then turned them in. One of the young men is still in prison as a terrorist! I was shocked at the level of riot police present at the convention.

Good on you, Thom, for airing the real Christopher Columbus and for your article on that subject! Even though I had heard of some of these things before...it is still rather shocking to hear, or read, about it. It needs to be repeated over and over again so those who honor psychopaths and criminals who steal, rape, and murder cannot make heroes and saints of them.
