Nicely presented. I will look for your comments.

The End of Big Media? I wish! These people won't roll over and play dead, they have too much money yet to use to buy politicians. It will not be easy to unclinch their fingers from around our necks. I sure hope the answer is a big "yes" however.

I was looking over the comments for a book titled, "Democracy Incorporated: Managed Democracy and the Specter of Inverted Totalitarianism" and thought one was especially interesting. Compared to totalitarianism, in which everyone rallies around a leader and a cause (whether or not they want to), inverted totalitarianism encourages us to be distracted ("...go shopping") and to be politically disengaged by claiming government is the enemy ("The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help"). These ideas are not at all compatible with democracy. Big media gives us both distractions and reinforcement for the corporate message of government being bad. In the past couple of years lower courts have made many good decisions, only to have them overturned by a corporate friendly judge.

    Supreme court=corporate friendly judges

We will continue to experience the reshaping of America of, by, and for the will of the 5 right wing Supreme Courtesans. I will bet $1M these 5 courtesans will re-instate the FCC rule, and that their reasoning will lack common sense - as have most of the rulings by the Roberts court. Any takers?

Meanwhile, no matter what Obama does during the next 1+ years, it is imperative he be re-elected in 2012, lest anyone care to see a Michelle Bachmann or Sarah Palin on the court or in the White House!

  • Is wealth inequality in America hurdling our nation toward civil unrest - as Zbigniew Brezinski has warned?   14 years 5 weeks ago

Dr. Brezinski is absolutely correct. The veneer of civilization is thinner than most people realize and the Republicans are working hard at making it even thinner.

The point of my statement was about how the people could vote in and then vote out something. I'm quite certain, that that could and would be done with any other legislation deemed undesirable by the people, and the case of the 18th admendment was my example of it.

Interesting little video but be sure to click on the "OUR FOUNDATION" button to get a better idea of what this all is really about.....maybe before you watch the video.."

    example:

"At last, here’s an easy way for you to help out in the fight against socialism, tyranny and the welfare state"

I'm all against tyranny but not necessarily against moderate socialism or the moderate welfare state but I think the "free market" needs to be heavily regulated...yes...by government. Some web sites, in my opinion, are all about treating a free market as the god we all have to follow....which is why we are all in such a mess today. That, and the brainless adherence to any god myth...especially the ones you can't see...unless you are off your meds or on them or imbibing shrooms...then you have bigger problems.

Just more to confuse the "little people" into acting as useful idiots for those rapaceous wolves who want all your money....or don't want to pay you a fare wage...they are all into making lots of money and want everyone else to believe that "it's all the fault of Welfare Queens" and ignore the real mega-Welfare Queens of corporations who get out of paying their fair share of taxes and continually steal from the people....and their commons....to amass great personal wealth and let the rest starve and die off of treatable diseases they can no longer afford to have taken care of. The greedmeisters are tricksters and will get you working against your best interests with fanciful tales and conspiracies that will confuse you.

I believe there are partial truths in many "conspiracy theories" ...some more so than others. but the bottom line is....look a little further to see just who it is putting out these conspiracy theories and what do they stand to gain....are they just trying to trick you out of your best interests..your money...life savings? Look for the clues....look at all the people on these web sites ...who they are...what they do....and do you get the impression that they would represent your best interests.....or do they just want your money? Do they want to sell you on risking your hard earned money on their schemes because they have convinced you that they will protect you from the wolves (when the reality may be that "THEY" ARE THE WOLVE$)? The Bernie Madofs of this world are alive and well and still in business....he was just the tip of the iceberg!

As I am writing this, Pelosi has said nix to any cuts.

When I watched a Republican Senator this morning who was questioned yesterday by Al Sharpton about taxing the rich, the Senator seemed as if he were in a trance. Even when questioned about how the trickle-down fantasy failed, he chanted the mantra: "Give them tax breaks. They pay too much. We must allow them to create jobs..."

This is a Machiavellian meme on the Right today that calls up images of right-wing Germany as it was gliding under the spell of Hitler.

Why does Obama capitulate? Because he has to have the corporate money to survive, like all the rest of them. Before we hit another economic depression and riots, we need to have a real Boston Tea Party that throws the monopoly tea in the harbor. We now have taxation without representation again. Our representatives work for somebody else, not the taxpaying citizens. And the corporate persons they work for don't even pay taxes. It's amazing.

Not a stretch at all....I believe that the ruling class uses both parties as a tool to get what they want and to oppress the rest of us. It is a bad cop...good cop ploy. The bad cop...the Republicans are used to badger and bludgeon us for immediate results...then when the people are so ticked off and want to rebel....along comes the "good cop"....the Democrats who pretend to be less rapaceous, and maybe even on our side once in a while, sell us hope and want us to believe that they are the only alternative. The result is that the "cops" get what they want and we the people get raped silly and left dismayed and confused....again...and again...and again. Would the Republicans have been able to have bailed out the banksters with the $700 billion bailout if McCain had won in 2008? Obama was the slick and lugubrious "hope we could believe in" that ended up screwing us all in the end. Voting Democrat will only get us a temporary pretend reprive which ends up only slightly slowing down the goals that the ruling elite have in turning us all into paupers and slaves and results in retarding any edge we might have in any meaningful rebellion using means that will make a difference. We need to do something really drastic to break that pretend democracy that has only become the tool of the rich against the poor. We need to get really, really, mad and tell them that "we won't take it anymore".

By the way... in addition to something I mentioned in previous posts about that company in New York that had about $750,000 stolen out of their bank account by hackers...and the recent court ruling that the bank was not at fault and could not be held liable for it....there is yet another ridiculous banking "scandal" that I believe was mentioned in today's show. A man was mistakenly arrested and thrown in jail because the Chase bank believed the man was trying to pass a bad check (written by Chase Bank). He lost his job and his car..and the bank, a year later, still has not even said "I'm sorry!"...according to this article....

That's an amendment, not a law, Maxrot. The Supreme Court couldn't have repealed that.

The marriage between Religion and Capitalism or said another way Theocracy and Corporatism produces Fascism. Although Benito Mussolini was a bright fellow it was Pope Benedict XV (1914-1922) who gave to him the fully developed doctrine of Fascism. Mussolini sold the doctrine to Franco (Catholic Spain). And Hitler adopted and adapted the doctrine substituting himself as the Godhead. That's a bit different I think than what you said on your radio show today. Peace

Well some people are preparing for conflict. A great Mother Jones issue last year detailed the many miltia groups and we've seen right wing extremists shoot up churches, fly into abuilding in Fl and shoot Rep Giffords. These guys love guns too.

And since fact and reason are frowned upon on the far right, we could have ourselves a buncha real crazies to contend with.

  • Could this be the end of "Big Media"?   14 years 5 weeks ago

If the far right have taken over the republican party, is it too much of a stretch of the imagination to suggest that they have taken over the democratic party as well?

  • Daily Topics - Friday July 8th, 2011   14 years 5 weeks ago

Well a good example of an admendment that congress passed then repealed would have been the 18th. It was put into effect because of popular demand, and removed because of popular demand. The constitutionality of it though I doubt was ever in serious question. But that happened pretty fast, less than 20 years.

It seems to me that if the Supreme Court is deciding what is and isn't constitutional, then ultimately government is in their hands. If the people are deciding what is and isn't constitutional, then ultimately government is in their hands (especially if we eliminated the Senate). So I guess we should take a look at the Constitution to see what we should do.

I forget, does the US Constitution start with The Supreme Court of The United States of America in order to form a more perfect union.... or does it begin with We The People....?

I always thought it was the duty of the courts to interpet the meaning of a law and apply it appropriately, not decide if a law is or is not appropriate. Perhaps that is why the founding fathers gave the court judges lifetime seats, because they assumed that they would have the most limited power, but would be made up of people with ever increasing experience with interpeting laws.

I also still wonder why we need the executive branch of Government. I'd be happy with the dismantling of the Senate, limiting of the Supreme Court power, and just letting the Speaker of the House be the one who assumes the duties and powers of the current Executive branch. I think that our founding fathers were too used to having a titular head when they created the Executive branch.

The Republicrook goal has always been to convert the US to a Feudal Society. They attack education because they must not allow people to be educated enough to understand their diabolical goals, and the treasonous methods they have used since the advent of Reaganomics! The President has consistantly betrayed those of US who elected him, hoping he would oppose the Facist Republicrook plunder of America! Instead he has bowed to his masters at every turn, I fear our once Proud Nation has been conquered by the New World Order!

  • Is wealth inequality in America hurdling our nation toward civil unrest?   14 years 5 weeks ago

I remember reading an editorial years ago that violence is often the only tool left for those who have no other source of power. If the Democrats and the President won't stand up for the other 98%, then we have virtually no one left on our side. The attitude of Obama and Co. seems to be, "If you don't like it tough! You have no other choices. We are the lesser of two evils." How ironic that Obama can't stop kissing the GOP's rear and pathetically begging them to be his friend. Our only hope is what is happening in Wisconsin. I am not advocating violence but can see that it might be the only option left to those who have no other ones left.

Name one law that could have been overturned faster judicially than legislatively? All of them. When has the legislature ever repealed an Unconstitutional law before the judiciary got to it?

If reversing unconstitutional laws through the legislature were faster, you'd be able to give us examples, Thom.

  • Thom Hartmann: Republicans ran up the debt & now they don't want to pay the bill   14 years 5 weeks ago

One of your BEST presentations yet, Thom! I agree...if Obama and the Dems said that one clear message...

"Republicans ran up the debt and now they don't want to pay the bill"

...and elaborated on that message before the media and in meetings 24/7, they could turn this mess around. The fact they are not doing this begs the question: whose side are the Dems on?

Many thanks to you, Thom. I am very grateful for you and your outstanding work!
