I felt this in my bones. They just seem to love bombs. This is a plan that been going on for a long time just waiting for the right moment. I have notice Obama always speaks up when it comes to war, watch his eyes. Love at first sight. Anyway He hardly ever screams to help here at home. Anyway, War is insane, they won't be happy until they make this planet barren and unlivable, just to watch their man made glory. Happiness will be when this planet explodes into millions of fragments so we can have a nova to watch in the heavens. Planets do explode which we call asteroids and meterorits. To die is almost effortless but to live takes effort.
There are safe levels of radiation. Radiation Hormesis is well known and widely accepted. If you raise a rat in a low-radiation environment they do more poorly than in a higher radiation environment.
An Introduction to Radiation Hormesis: "Despite the fact that high doses of ionizing radiation are detrimental, substantial data from both humans and experimental animals show that biologic functions are stimulated by low dose radiation (Luckey 1980)."
Radiation Hormesis (down at the bottom of section 5.5): "The BEIR (Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation) value is based on the concept that a single hit could cause a cell to become cancerous; it does not recognize four protective responses that the cell possesses:
1. The body may be stimulated to produce detoxifying agents reducing the damage done by the chemical reactions induced by the free radicals generated by ionizing radiation.
2. The body may be stimulated to initiate damage repair mechanisms.
.... Accounting for these repair mechanisms suggests the modification of the conservative linear hypothesis to a curve shown as curve 2 in Fig. 10 that is lower than the straight line hypothesis.
Another model suggests that the radiation damage at low radiation doses does not occur unless the radiation dose exceeds a certain threshold value..."
There are a LOT of studies that have confirmed radiation hormesis.

My understanding is that this is a police action, not a war. But if you want to call it a war, then you might check with history. We did declare a war on Libya some years back and I doubt they ever undeclared it. This is the ONE time that I disagree with Dennis Kuchinic. If we didn't stop him he would have continued to slaughter the people, and the people ASKED for International help. I just wish we would have done the same for Rowanda and Darphor. Imperialist America only does it when it is in our National or Monetary interest. :-(

I was caught on camera at the Hollywood March 19th Peace Rally supporting Wisconsin workers. I had a funny idea and I got a lot of attention for it. I made little flags of "Koch Sucker Scott Walker" and stuck them in piles of horse poop at the rally. I found 3 different piles and each time I started placing my flags I was surrounded by cameras and microphones. I knew someone would post them online.

There may be circumstances (like bacterial infection or cancer) where ionizing radiation may be beneficial because it kills the invader faster than the host, but ionizing radiation leaves a trail of chemical rearrangement that ends in a bushy cascade of destruction from secondary ionizing effects. Hormesis may be the reason that very low dose effects of radiation have remained unclear. In case of doubt, I prefer the precautionary principle. Especially when bioconcentration of elements makes the damage internal so that a seemingly low overall dose is all dumped into a single organ. Children are more vulnerable because they are still developing.
I must point out that a lack of measurement doesn't imply a lack of radiation. The nuclear power industry is both incompetent and disinclined to do careful monitoring. I doubt that the Dai-Ichi plant was well monitored to begin with and I am certain that the tsunami has wiped out any instrumentation near the shore. I have little doubt that there were large releases and most of them went out to sea. The US Navy has imposed a 100 nautical mile (115 mile) exclusion zone allowing only mission required entry. Twenty US Navy incidents have contaminated vehicles and given crewfolk a dose.
It seemed clear that the US officials were a little pissed off last week when setting their land exclusion zone at 50 miles and saying Japan was late to call the accident a level 5 : the Navy got mugged by the radioactive clouds from the explosions and fires at Dai-Ichi. All US dependents have been offered voluntary evacuation.
Another side of the low dose argument is in Killing Our Own. The neonatal mortality spike in Harrisburg in 1979 is striking but it is not an isolated effect. Stillbirths, neonatal mortality and childhood illness are all associated with low doses of radiation from the nuclear power cycle. I much prefer to see radiation contained, not explosively spread by a nuclear power plant - I will seek hormesis only through sunshine.

If we have to put up with the economic metaphor that a rising tide lifts all boats (which metaphor is far from true anyway), shouldn't we point out that a heavy rain will sink a shallow boat faster than a deep one?
I have heard "right-wingers" bring up the War Powers Act, to justify why Congress is not declaring war.
Do you have any perspective on that?
What war? do we have boots on the ground? This time slot for progressive radio is so self serving. If Tom would concentrate on educationing his listeners, as oppose to staring up hipe and assumptions, I wouldn't turn it off as I often do. Ask the question, "are we in another war?" and wait for a discussion. You guys are not always the smartest in the room. I would say less informed.
Average house size may indeed be twice the size these days, but how about lot size, seems to have reduced to me. When you buy a house, you don't just by the house but the lot it sits on.

Geez Thom, you've had a CAT scan, went through Radioactive rain in Germany around the time Chernobyl went haywire, probably have had several dental X-Ray's like most of us, I'm beginning to wonder if you have a slight glow when all the lights are off.
I've been a bit concerned about the whole radiation plume hitting the west coast too (live in So Cal). Been having the family stay inside as much as possible, I figure better safe than sorry. I don't trust the official line that it's safe, nothing to worry about. It's more beneficial for them to lie about it then to admit that Nuclear energy is ultimately to dangerous and expensive to have present in this day and age.

Atrocities and War go hand in hand. Mai Lai in Vietnam, Bataan Death March in WWI, the Holocaust, Armenian Genocide in Turkey WWI, German atrocities in Belgium WWI, Sherman's March through the South in the Civil War, etc, etc... These are only a mere handful of the atrocities in war that are known, and they are far outweighed by the unrecorded instances. From soldiers shooting any enemy with their hands up, or raping civilians as they pass through enemy territory. Its an unwritten rule of war, that in the war zone, there are no rules, do as you please against the enemy.
Prior to WWII we didn't have a standing army, nor the Pentagon. Since WWII we have neither declared war through congress, or removed the Pentagon or Standing Army... coincidence? We have been became a Militarized Nation in the 20th Century, there should be no surprise that we are guilty of atrocities.

Although I agree with all of the answers to the question, I will have to agree most with what MugsysRapSheet had to say because I do believe that Americans lost confidence or trust in our government even before "Citizens United." Most people can see the evidence of something that is happening before their eyes long before the actual damage is done. . . others need Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh to show them how to drop the lit match they're holding as they stand tied to their stakes in the middle of a gasoline soaked, ready to ignite bonfire beneath their feet.

Thom recently interviewed a journalist or economist named "Michael Hudson". There is another, older "Michael Hudson", an economist and historian who is a Professor at the University of Missouri, and director of the Institute for the Study of Long Term Economic Trends, and one that Thom would find much more exciting than the younger "Michael Hudson".
