  • Is President Obama on the verge of handing Republicans yet another victory?   14 years 25 weeks ago

SSA is just a whipping boy for the real issues. We should recognize that what was at stake over the last 6 months, in the last election, and what republicants characterized as the "uncertainty" hanging over the economy [purportedly stifling investment], was in fact "cap and trade", not social security, not bailouts, and certainly not tax policy. Gas is still king.

Now that cap and trade is dead, the economy will suddenly heal; it will be a jobless recovery, but a recovery nonetheless. Yet politicians will demand other sacrifices from the people, social security may indeed be gutted, and all will be futile. There will be no new jobs. Any stimulus to business will be spent overseas. Obama will be defeated in 2012 for not having cut taxes enough. And yet the real issue will never be addressed, unless we take the law into our own hands, which is what Democracy is all about. How so, you ask?

The so-called crisis of unemployment has been a charade and a smoke screen for passing those changes to tax policy, estate taxes, and now, changes to social security. Surrounded by economic advisors for whom the revolving door of Washington politics was a way to polish up personal career success on Wall Street, Obama is trapped in a bubble, and only a severe defeat or a million people on Pennsylvania avenue, will awaken him to the lies. While well intentioned, he simply has been deluded by his advisors, and a mass demonstration of people power is needed to awaken him.

The real issue is the Malthusian dilemma, 100,000 new jobs per month are needed just to stay even with population growth. No one should doubt that this is only going to get worse. Iran, India, and China are all caught on the horns of this dilemma, and the US too.

One solution to the stranglehold of the banks on money is to develop a second economy, where the govt pays $30 cash per student per hour for credits earned in teaching unemployed workers new skills at community colleges, and those hour credits can also optionally be used to exchange for other hourly services, without taxation. Once launched, credits can also be generated by individuals who receive other services, a sort of work IOU, but having the federal govt involved, or a state municipality, will quickly build the needed critical mass to have liquid credits circulate and be honored by participating individuals and businesses. Others have demonstrated this "hour credit" can work, what is needed is a municipality or state to prime the pump by recognizing the credits as legal tender for certain kinds of debts and put a dollar equivalent value by making them exchangeable for cash.

We should recognize that sustained pressure on politicians can bring about good results, and that sustained apathy only generates more apathy. Can anyone suggest a means to get mass demonstrations on the nightly news, every night? An army on the shores of the Potomac! That's the one sure way to burst the Washington bubble effect.

Apparently, Manifest Destiny -- the implementation of American Exceptionalism -- is alive and well where it always was.

these CEO's win in so many ways with this.
They hire cheap labor, increase their profits, their corporations have more money to "invest" in candidates (with unlimited resources thanks to SCOTUS ruling), they kept the unemployment rate high, thus insuring the mid term election results (and maybe even 2012) and now have more of their "bought and paid for" stooges to do their bidding in congress; proof of which is in the continued tax giveaway to top 2%. They will continue to get tax breaks for off-shoring, use the unions as scapegoats and on and on we go until the top 2% has an even a bigger slice of the pie (at a record NOW since 1928) and eventually the middle class is completely gone.

One of the tragedies for the American Indians is that they were discredited by the European settlers as backwards . They were in my humble opinion anything but backwards. They got it . In the grand scheme of things if their lifestyle were embraced perhaps global warming, wasted management , and

widespread pollution would have been less severe. I'm not saying they didn't have their own problems,

or social inadequacies, they just didn't exploit them the way europeans did. From the Spanish in South

and Central America to the europeans in North America the indigenous tribes of the Americas really got screwed in the worst way.

This is a small step in the right direction for a great many native people that respected life, the land, each other and the oneness of all life with a greater reverence than those who stole their peace.. It is tragic that prejudice and bias still exist towards Native Americans. Fear and bigotry coupled with selfish greed is a lousy image to show the rest of America.

  • Daily Topics - Wednesday December 29th, 2010   14 years 25 weeks ago

Two topics of interest today that I caught intermittently. As a Turtle Mtn Band tribal member I hope that some mention was made of Leonard Peltier during your broadcast. Peltier's imprisonment has resulted in Amnesty International stating "there is concern about the fairness of the proceedings leading to his conviction and it is believed that political factors may have influenced the way the case was prosecuted." Secondly, I'm a School Psychologist and, over the course of my career, have heard teachers, parents and advocates call for diagnosing children under DSM (all editions) criteria, often with a resultant pressure to medicate. As I state, we qualify student's for SPED services under "educational" criteria and it has been my experience that often children with a presentation of (in particular) attentional difficulties may have some area(s) of processing difficulties that contribute to that presentation as well as affect ability to access instruction and curriculum. I met you a couple of years ago in Reno at the meeting sponsored by the Washoe Dems. I told you my reluctance to support a diagnosis of ADHD by other agencies that then expect the schools to immediately qualify a student for SPED services. I didn't get the impression that you thought too much of my point of view. I do cite your "Hunter in a Farmer's World" fairly often.

I'm guessing that the Republicans would be hoping that the Hopi Indian prophecy is nothing but a fantasy. However it has come true right up to the last item- which is still outstanding.

It would be interesting to know how Thom fits with his material from "The Prophet's Way'. The two prophecies seem to dovetail uncomfortably well to me- and both fit in very well with the natural outworking of karma. Unfortuantely the karma of the US nation is like the curates egg "good in parts".

Its about time the indiginous people of this country get something for us taking their land and killing their people. This part of American history is blot upon this nation.

    Normalcy Bias

Americans in the United States of Mortal Sin suffer from what is called – normalcy bias. Americans have never had to really suffer as other citizens in other countries. We will never or we can never learn. We will not listen. It may be naivete, ignorance, or outright arrogance. Americans tend to believe that nothing bad can happen to them. America’s collapse and destruction will be of epic proportions. Let us make no mistake that our manifest destiny is to die as a people and as a country.

I read somewhere, unfortunately I have no idea what book it was, that there are no longer any "Indians not taxed". So that provision of the Constitution is moot now.

darn, somebody beat me to the 'peed on' comment, and isn't that what trickle down is all about? as my Dad used to say don't piss in my ear and tell me it's rainin'!

@Dr. Noren, I agree with your comments completely and see no reason why Thom would delete them...I've worked with doctors on the business side of health care for over 15 years and can tell the same stories over and over...Medicare for ALL works pretty well in Canada and it takes the weight of health care OFF of business large and small while also putting EVERYONE in the same risk pool to keep costs down, plus they're not afraid to go get a better job or start abusiness for fear of not having health insurance...also as a semi-frequent visitor to Canuckistan I can say anecdotally that they appear NOT to have near the problems of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, etc. that Americans do...it's a matter of putting the power back into people's hands and out of corporate whores. In Denmark they have a GREAT standard of living with health care for all, paid vacation, paid education (because they VALUE it!) so young people don't start out in HUGE debt to banks, etc.

    http://ida.dk/english/comeworkandliveindenmark/livingindenmark/Sider/livingindenmark.aspx

The Danish welfare system is characterized by economic growth and a high standard of living due to the relatively equal distribution of income. This means that citizens enjoy extensive financial security. They are supported in times of sickness, unemployment and old age. Supplementary services include help with rent payment and with expenses on children. Furthermore, citizens are offered services such as day-care centres, health care and home care.

Contrary to most other EU member states, social benefits in Denmark only to a very limited degree depend on employer contributions and direct contributions, and peoples right to benefits depends only to a limited extent on their former activity on the labour market. The principle behind the Danish welfare society, often known as “the Scandinavian welfare model”, is that all citizens have access to social benefits regardless of their social or ethnic background. This means that foreigners living in Denmark benefit from the Danish welfare system on an equally with Danes and may benefit from the public (partly self financed) childcare system, the public educational system and the free public health service.
