  • Should free public college be available to wealthy Americans?   9 years 35 weeks ago

Keep in mind that, in blighty, the public schools are the good ones and the private are for upper class twits who cannot get into public school. Requiring a low income for free education adds a layer of bureaucracy that will devour any possible savings. And it gives too much control over their offspring to wealthy parents.

For Thom, or anyone else that can't watch CNN on their TV but has Comcast, http://my.xfinity.com/tt/?cid=myaccount has a section in the lower right called "Watch Live TV Online" and CNN is in the list under "Always On". I didn't have to sign in on that specifically (I keep myself signed in to my account, because I use the site to check e-mail).

Am told by a friend at Sandia National labs that the politics of

competing for research money is ruthless.

So much for all scientists as noble seekers of truth.

Imagine what goes on in institutions with less funding.

Thom keeps talking about evolution as if it has goals. It doesn't, any more than gravity tries to form orbits. An orbit is the result of what happens moment by moment, but we see a pattern in it. Likewise, the differentiation of species and the demise of some along the way is not chosen (except maybe by us at this point), it's the result of random occurrences and momentum of action.

The best concise definition of evolution that I've ever read is this: Evolution is the non-random selection of randomly varying traits.

According to Wikipedia ; "In April 1934, as a result of lobbying by the Knights of Columbus and New York City Italian leader Generoso Pope, Congress and FDR proclaimed October 12 a Federal Holiday under the name Columbus Day". A questionable action by Washington given the precipitous rise of fascism in Italy under the leadership of Benito Mussolini, a close colleague of Adolph Hitler, during that same period. Since 1970, the holiday has been fixed to the second Monday in October."

Yet another annual fleecing of taxpayers who have to pony up the dough to pay holiday benefits to federal employees. This long standing Federal Holiday was also extended to the U.S. banking industry based solely on the government's oversight role via the FDIC that was created a year before the holiday was established !

  • Should Columbus Day be renamed Indigenous Peoples Day?   9 years 36 weeks ago

I am of African Decent, when I began reading books on how my Ancestor's were treated, I had to stop reading them, because it filled me with so much HATE and ANGER, and I wanted to do something; but my good sense got the better of me, and I've learned to live with this pain for the past 40+ years!

Learning that Native Indians were treated equally as horrible as my African Ancestor's, I could not listen to Thom's conversation, bringing us all up to date, on this horror, for all it did was make me relive the pain my Ancestor's suffered, and still today, my Black Brother's and Sister's, caught up in White man's racist games, whereby getting themselves killed or imprisoned, because WE ARE TARGETED!

I often wonder why Blacks cannot create and grown our own businesses, but a stark reminder stabs me in my heart, in remembrance of what happened to Black Wall Street, here in Tulsa OK! These White owned and controlled Racist White Society, will NOT TOLERATE, Blacks becoming financially Independent on their own; sure they will allow for a FEW, but a whole state, and or Community becoming Financially Independent, they would think nothing of, dropping MORE BOMBS into our Black Neighborhoods, as they did on 9/11, to trick the American People into believing, it was Saddam whom caused the disaster on 9/11, to INVADE IRAQ, to take control over the ND largest Crude Fields on this Planet!

NOW OBSERVE, WHAT THEY HAVE DONE TO AMERICA and the MIDDLE EAST, I truly believe, we are living in our last days, because I firmly believe, before these White Evil Doer's loose control, they would not have ND thoughts, of DESTROYING the whole Planet! THIS IS HOW EVIL, I BELIEVE these WHITE RACIST'S ARE!

I love the irony that every year, people who rail against child sexual abuse, honor the memory of a man that profited from, and engaged in, child sexual abuse and slavery.

    The epitome of religious hypocrisy.

I live in Albuquerque, but didn't notice any difference in how they celebrate today. Maybe they begain it in the public schools or on reservations. However, I agree. The lie is finished, and the original natives of this country need to be celebrated. Thanks for the heads up.

Just today I had the same thought. Why honor a European invader who enslaved and mutilated a race of friendly natives? If they did not bring him gold, he amputated their hands. A perusal of the first chapter of Howard Zinn's "Peoples' History of the United States" tells a tale far different from the one we learned in school. Let the truth be told, and let's give Columbus day a rest. He doesn't deserve a "day".

  • We Shouldn't Honor Genocidal Colonialists-End Columbus Day Now   9 years 36 weeks ago

You got that right, Howard. God does not exist in the form beleived by so many billions. If there is a god he sure as hell does not protect the innocent and does not to this day. Jesus is an example, he was crucified for his beleif and millions others have been murdered under the same illogic of doing god's will. Genocide continues today, there is no good god, only belief driven by fear of death that seeks relief in fantasy. Definitely ready to take Columbus day off the calendar and make it Indiginous People's day to honor all those natives that were murdered in order to take their land.

Tom's blog paints a brutally realistic account in contrast to the fairy taie

    we were taught in school.

Lets hope Columbus day quickly gets a new name and a new theme.

However, there is a bigger pattern at play here.

Were not many tribes in the America's engaged in bloody warfare and a slave trade

for centuries just as went on in Europe?

If not for the rifle who would be telling fairy tales to their children?

Same pattern seems to be at play in the tribal wars of today.

What are children taught about Columbus? I think the first thing we need to do is make sure our kids are told the truth and the history of the Columbus story along with all the evidence. By the way, did you read Kamal Abdul-Jabbar's article in the Oct. 5h issue of Time. It should be must reading for all.

  • We Shouldn't Honor Genocidal Colonialists-End Columbus Day Now   9 years 36 weeks ago

There's been much discussion about creating a holiday for Election Day (The Tuesday following the first Monday in November). Maybe Columbus Day could be deleted in favor of this new holiday. It would serve to increase voter participation in national, state and local elections (something the right would hate, of course) plus end the stupidity of celebrating a documented sociopath, slave trader and murderer every year.

Your comments on Thomas Jefferson are overlooking some facts. Check out a new book published 10/1/2015 titled American Slave Coast, a history of the slave-breeding industry. Thomas Jefferson was raping his sister-in-law, Sally Hennings, who was his wife's half sister. Also he was trying to expand the slave-breeding industry in his state in competition with South Carolina's slave importing business. Jefferson was no American hero, periiod.

A caller has a weird timeline in her head. For the record:

Pangaea broke up 225 million years ago. There must have been monkeys back then, because there are Old World monkeys and New World monkeys, but no great apes yet, because all the great apes (including humans) existed only in the Old World until humans came to America.

Archeological evidence has the New World first being inhabited by humans about 19,000 years ago (or maybe it's 29,000).

The cities of Sumeria go back no more than about 5,000 years, so any contemporary cities in Peru have no bearing on how or when South America became populated.

It's also been pointed out that with the Bering Strait freezing over every year, even after the end of the Ice Age, that immigration route is entirely plausible. However, that doesn't mean there wasn't also some other immigration from, say, Asia or Polynesia.
