Wish Thom would start adding to his riff on equal pay that this inequality follows women into their retirement to the grave because their Social Security is based on their earnings.
Interestingly, here in Colorado, the streets surrounding the capitol are Lincoln, Sherman, Grant and Colfax (the last being Grant's VP). And there's a statue on the west side that's all about the Civil War. This was a little weird to discover, knowing that Colorado became a state 11 years after the war ended (though while Grant was President). But it's much better than if we'd been on the other side of it.
Why should American Taxpayers be forced to support those who breed uncontrollably while they lack the basic ability to take care of just themselves. This may have been an acceptable practice 100 years ago when we still had a large Agrarian economy and thousands of individual family farms where every family member was required to contribute to the success of the enterprise ! Now were facing a similar situation with the ongoing export of former living wage manufacturing jobs leaving a large group of American families to barely survive on minimum wage service sector jobs ! If you want to help these people improve their financial condition and dignity, provide them with a job rebuilding their state's, and the country's, decaying infrastructure instead of a handout ! The New Deal remains a valid model for the country to follow when difficult economic times prevail !
The correct answer is "Yes". Most of what the activist unions of old fought for is now law, though much of it has been circumvented. The new overlords of America---the 1% and the superbanks---still need unions. They need them to appease the workers when they have to take paycuts or when benefits are cuts or when jobs are sent overseas. The role of unions today seems to be more about keeping the workers on the assemby lines and off the picket lines.
People are more concerned about their own financial hide these days. There is much less interest in the collective. That's the idea. To discourage people from working together to build a stronger work force; those people are deemed "troublemakers" and usually forced out. We are also being pitted against workers in second and third tier countries with their high unemployment who work for pennies a day and no benefits and are glad to get it; who are prohibited from forming unions.
If Democrats were so good for the unions and working class, there wouldn't be a Republican one in office. The fact is, there is only surface "sound bite" differences between the two parties. Both are bought and paid for by their corporate masters. Elections have become an illusion of choice. We MUST stop accepting their pick of puppets.

I'm not much of a history buff, and '56 is well before my time, but I thought Republican -- pre civil rights -- was where the progressives dwelled. (Lincoln, a Rep, was an abolishionist, etc.) So it's not so much that the party took a hard right turn and pulled everyone with them -- as the article indicates -- but that party affiliation just flip-flopped.
Is the former not correct and hence the latter would be a more accurate statement? If so, then we need to look not at R's and D's, but at liberal and conservative viewpoints and how they've changed and/or been accepted/rejected in the mainstream.
I've seen it alleged that no documentation has been found to support the claim that Ted Cruz's mother was born in the U.S. I did dig around a bit and found no refutation of the claim. I'm concerned that this may be another birtherism effort. Anyone have any light to shed? Since his mother's citizenship is the basis for Cruz's claim of citizenship this seems to be a legitimate question.
My {ancient} generation’s Poli-sci’s theory-re-Parties includes how Party structures-n-processes can function toward keeping such a horrid person from being nominated. Virtually ALL aspects of this are currently absent from especially-the-Repugnantans.
We must also give Bernie a progressive Democratic congress. All seats in the House are up, and we can take back the Senate! But we must not forget the Governors and state legislators either. Remember, even a bad Democrat is better than any Republican!
And this year is not the time to waste a vote on the Greens, when Bernie needs us.
she's not going to change her "spots." By now if you don't have an accurate impression of what Bill and Hillary are about you're nucking futs! As the middle class went broke, her and bill spent their time building their fortune by monetizing public office.
Nope. She's just desperate and saying whatever she thinks people want to hear.
Until Bernie gets elected it's a nice dream. While we're dreaming we can think about changing the focus of our transportation infrastructure to more efficient mass transit, pedestrian, and my favorite bicycle.
Sadly Thom US gov't seems NOT to have the will to do much for we the people I paid my IRS bill IN FULL 2 months ago.. However IRS is still dunning me for MORE cash + Penalty !! Multiple calls get different answers. I am 72 lower income and have been caring for m y daughter & grand child since my daughter had a serious stroke. She recently was able to get a low paying part time JOB - but still on Disability . When I call IRS Their message says' We are experiencing higher than normal call volumn '! NO wonder Many people must be trying to work out mistakes that were made. Worse in jan 2009 GOP anti middle class pro wealth Congress swore ' do all they could to make Obama fail - Cause his Waterloo ' That is vile & anti American ... I will never vote GOP again as long as these crooks are in office. ps I voted for Obama twice. McCain / Palen were incompetent .
ChiMatt -- You did not answer my question. My question was would you change your position if I could show you that stricter gun controls could lower the homicide rate and not guaranteeing that 600,000 weapons could be collected.
You just said that the Australian example would not convince you. Actually you said the Australian example would have to have caveats.
mjoinir -- In how many of those household burglaries was the homeowner able to use a weapon to prevent bodily harm? Was it 0.01%? How many times was the owner's weapon used to cause bodily harm to the owner? Isn't it like a 100 times more likely that the latter occurs?

Please discontinue “Rumble” panelist Charles Sauer. He detracts from useful discussions.
ct, I don't think any child should be punished for being the third born. And Singapore is a fascist police state.

By all means give public service announcements on TV about assistnace for low income families.
Provide free community college or trade school for the first two children in any family.
But also make it clear that the any child after the first two will have to be paid for out ot the parents pocket.
Read about this approach in Singapore, so its a tried and tested approach.

There needs to be public announcement on radio and TV to expand awareness of TANF and any other benefits that poor people are eligible for.

Getting rid of depletion allowances might be a place to start.
