  • Economists Demand Universal Health Care   10 years 16 weeks ago

I wouldn't call Obamacare a "great" start since it leaves far too much power with the insurance companies, but it is a start. Sadly, when dealing with a majority party that has lost its mind, logic is the last thing it will listen to.

Return to the income tax rates before Saint Raygun and we would be alright. I heard this morning that that pissant judge judy is making $47,000,000 a year. That is obscene.

I am hoping that We the People push for a jubilee, debt forgiveness, for the young & not so young people that are struggling under the bondage of their student loans. The boost this would give to America's real economy and the middle class would be phenomenal. As John Lennon once sang, "You may think that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one".

  • The Conservative Attempt to Re-Write Our Progressive History   10 years 16 weeks ago

You are correct. Over 90% of Ivy League college professors are progressives. Over 97% of all scientists who won a Nobel prize are (were) progressives. Over 99% of our countries founding fathers (and mothers) were progressives. In this case, I am so glad to be in the 90-99%.

But least ye dispare, there is hope-- 99% of the people who voted against the 14th, 15th, and 19th ammendments were conservatives. I wirte this so you can be happy being in the 99%. Yup, ya got's lots to be proud of.

Chuckles, there is quite a bit you don’t know.

Here are some facts about Singapore:
    • Singapore is a sovereign country with the second highest population density in the world.
    • According to the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions World Happiness Report (2013), Singapore ranks 30th among 156 countries, and is number 4 in Asia.
    • In terms of GDP per capita, Singapore is the 3 richest country in the world.
    • In terms of life expectancy, Singapore is ranked number 4 by the World Health Organization.
    • In terms of corruption, Singapore remains 5th least corrupt country in the Corruption Perceptions Index released by Transparency International.

Speaking for myself that sounds like a great place to live.

  • The U.S. Economy After Reaganomics...   10 years 16 weeks ago

Thank you! I am sharing this, and asking others to share it because I think it is a very articulate and easy to understand synopsis of what direction our country is going. Thom Hartmann and Bernie Sanders keep me on track when I do begin to feel despair about what is happening in this country -- especially when we have slid so far into an abyss since 2010 that it frightens me to think where we might be in 2020 if the people in this country do not find a way out of the blanket of stupor that we have allowed the Republicans//conservatives to shroud us in.

Additional confirmation of the ever present Oligarchy re-establishing control over our society by, among other things, limiting access to a higher education by significantly raising the cost. Prior to Wold War II a college education was exclusively reserved for those families in the upper economic strata, the same family dynasties who had come through the Great Depression with their economic status virtually untouched. The G.I. Bill that provided a virtually free college education to Veterans returning from the war was seen by the wealthy as just another welfare program for the middle and low end riff raft that would be flooding into their previously exclusive temples of class ! The most visible evidence of this ongoing dismantling by the wealthy is the elimination of the Middle Class, an action that has rewarded them with the return of obscene levels of profit while young Americans are increasingly losing all hope of ever seeing what their grand parents had accumulated just four decades ago ! Are we now looking at a situation in this country like that of Greece where a large percentage of the young Greeks have left the country seeking living wage employment thus ending any chance that Greece has for a future restoration ?

Separate the Universities and Colleges from their lucrative sports franchises and demand that tenured professors, not over worked graduate students and retired part time presenters, be returned to their former positions developing and presenting the courses that their lifetime of experience has prepared them to deliver.

Congress could always have a 25% cut in "defense" spending, which would still make America the highest "defense" spending country in the Universe, then use that money to make all state colleges free and subsidizes private colleges tuition as well, but that's just rational governing practices.

there is greed and power hungry people in every corner of this earth. Stay close to JESUS for this world is about to end. Remember Sodom & Gamorah: Those that kept their eyes on God lived. Even Lot's wife wanted to go back to her worldly life of riches; she perished.

All public universities and community colleges must have no tuition. When I attended City College of San Francisco in 1954 there was no tuition. Then I attended and was graduated from UC Berkeley in 1959. Again there was no tuition only a $70 fee, My brother and I both were graduated from UC Berkeley. We wouldn't have gone to college if there was tuition because our parents couldn't afford it. Our father was a mail carrier and mother worked part time in a school cafeteria. I don't think student loans were available then. Both myself and my brother have had great, and very successful, careers as civil and electrical engineers respectively.

President Obama is on the right track with his push for no tuition. The neotards on the other hand are completely off their rockers. They want to let people set aside money, tax free, to pay for college. This is typical neotard thinking. What about promising students from the 47% who do not make enough money to even pay their bills. How the hell are they going to be able to afford to set aside money for their children's college. The neotards suggested the same thing for health care. They wanted to let people set aside money for health care. This stupid idea again leaves the 47% without health care.

When are these selfish bastards going to wake up. They must be the result of home schooling in pseudo-christian families or else their parents were second grade dropouts.

Let's clean house in 2016 and sweep them all out of office. If that doesn't work then I don't have much hope for the future of this country. I am just glad that I am 79 and won't be around much longer to put up with crap from these unAmerican, selfish, arrogant, ignorant morons.

My ancestors from my mother's family immigrated from Germany in the early 1800's. I now wish they had remained in Germany. They are gracious enough to provide free college tuition for all citizens and even provide free tuition for foreign students. that's my kind of country.

Could this be described as mercenary?

It certainly appears to me that god will find it hard to bless america because it is unwilling to care for its' own

UK seems to be following your depraved greed in our educational system also

That is no coincidence I believe

Looks like it's a family affair

    Very, very sad!

Chi Matt -- One could also vote for democrats. If we had a majority of dems in the house and 67 dem senators, that student loan debt would be paid by all Americans. This seems just, since Americans, and not the students, will benefit the most from that strengthing of our intellectual infrastructure.

  • Would You Like Some Crippling Debt with that Degree?   10 years 16 weeks ago

You can't get rid of student loan debt in bankruptcy either. I don't know about private student loans, but if you do Federal loans, like most people do, they can and will garnish your wages, just like they would for back taxes or child support. The only way to get out of student loan debt is to pay them off, or die.

I am all for checks and balances, But when our government plays games (Obama's veto) with a major environmental issue like the KXL that only keeps Congress from going around the State Dept. tells me that they have another alternative? And the State Dept. needs to still vote against the KXL? Give me a break! All our government structure is now controlled by big money, including Obama.

Yes, we need to keep the grassroots movements moving, but I won't expect a presidential veto to have much of an effect.

The reason the .558mm armor-piercing (AP) bullet issue came up is that AP bullets aren't allowed in pistols. Originally, these bullets worked only in rifles, but a few years ago, someone started making pistols that can fit them, thus requiring a review by the ATF. So the gun industry has gotten itself into this situation where a product might be shifted into a banned category.

If "state" can't mean the nation (like it does in the phrase "enemy of the state"), then people in DC, PR, VI, MP, GU, & AS can't qualify for ObamaCare subsidies no matter what.

I missed most of what Ian Millhiser said. I'm sure he's insightful, but I keep getting distracted by his pronunciation of "law" as /lawl/, like when Michele Bachmann says "Unined States". Maybe it's just a velar /l/, and not a plain dental /l/, but it's very noticeable. If it were part of a whole accent, maybe I could ignore it.

Sadly, it is my understanding that Enbridge will simply transport the same tar sands oil through the Flannagan South pipeline, which was just built across Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Illinois - connecting to Canadian systems through existing terminals.
