Heaven forbid someone mistakenly on the no fly list would be prevented from buying an assualt weapon to hunt with! The NRA gun lobby wields far too much political influence for a ban on Al Qaeda purchases at gun shows to happen.
Just for everyones information our founders were referring to single shot and buck & ball black powder musketry in the second amendment, and don't try to tell me otherwise!...The bill was ratified Dec.15th 1791!
How about some attention on Article I Section 8.The Congress shall have Power To lay and COLLECT TAXES, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and GENERAL WELFARE of the United States......1787
The Republicans have selective attention issues with the Constitution much like they have with the Christian Bible!
What else is New? We spend Billions - Billions, On Homeland Security and other terrorist government agencies! We started 2 Wars that has now cost American Citizens cost Trillions! We demonize terrorists and want to kill them all!
YET! We simply don't care if the terrorists goes to a gun show (or pays a criminal type to go), to buy guns without even a background check! Over 200 people on the terror watch list have BOUGHT guns at gun shows! Legislation to close these loop-holes have either not even gotten out of Committee, or if they have, been voted down by NRA bought legislators!
There is NO logic here - none whatsoever! God forbid that a terrorist somehow gets guns at a gun show in this Country and then succeeds to kill a lot of innocent families. What will be the response of the gun toting folk? It will be ‘So be it - I do not want to give up my right to own Guns!’
Yet these same folk will vote to spend trillions to kill thousands - This is Insanity!
And now Al Queda is advocating that their followers buy guns to kill Americans! Hey, only in America, Right?
But how about the simple smart solution to fix the loopholes that would preclude this from happening? But what are the odds of that ever happening when some States are now trying to pass laws where grammar school kids can carry conceal weapons!
Corporatism is the combined actions of corporations: by definition, unnatural persons. Mostly, they don't die. Also, Milton Friedman rationalized the notion that corporations have no obligation to anyone except their shareholders. In real life the managers of corporations feel no loyalty to anybody except themselves: often the largest of the shareholders, or else, the very highly paid lackeys of the largest shareholders.
Labor fought hard for a place at the table to negotiate working conditions and a smidgen of authority. Never a majority of votes on any corporate board.
Government implies too many different entities to discuss in this limited forum. Sometimes it was municipalities: remember 1960s New Haven, inspiration for N.Y.C. Mayor John Lindsay? How to expand the cash flow in a big city to improve the standard of living and the attraction of business and industry to the city? Borrow, borrow, borrow. After, "Fun City" which did a great many good things: planted trees, supported development of block associations, made Central Park safe by putting Shakespeare and music in the Park, poor old Mayor Abe Beame confronted the bill for the interest payments for all the borrowed money. Fortunately, the block associations had taught New Yorkers how to pull together and do more to take care of themselves, like manage despite the ghastly trash removal crisis.
And New Yorkers started selling their belongings - displayed on blankets spread on the sidewalks - and rents began to rise until reaching the shocking heights they now have achieved. The reliable subways became dilapidated and lacked adequate money to pay sufficient employees and maintain the equipment. The city continued to pay on the exorbitant price that had been agreed to by corrupt officials back in the day when the privately run subway train companies were sold to the city despite their terrible financial status. The city could have seized them. But chose to take the money paid by the owners for the purchase price.
All that borrowing seemed like a really good idea at the time. The City got more liveable.
But, now, we have to ask whether the shareholders are Americans, feeling any loyalty to our beloved nation. Or are the government officials on the receiving end of huge amounts of cash and prestige provided by oil magnates - international oil magnates - and mine owners, and agri-business holders of patents on genetically modified plants that are bred to produce sterile seeds, whose pollen flies wherever the wind blows it, so besotted with the excessive money they demand or are offered, or both, that they lose the sense of connection with real people?
Corporatism is about the belief (NOT the fact, but they think it is) that corporations are the superior "persons" to manage the business of America. Real flesh and blood people - especially the ones who sweat and bleed and weep to carry out their work - can be sacrificed. All are, "soldiers,"but not the corporations, and those who act in and for the corporations.
National Socialism, (Nazis. fascists. NOT, democratic socialists).
GUNS Gays God & Abortion seem to run the GOP agenda & the Baggers Many seem not to be true Christians but self righteous phonies who love to dictate to others how to live.

""That’s because the gun lobby will see to it that enough of our lawmakers are bought off to ignore the threat just like lobbyists like Michael Chertoff saw to it that enough lawmakers were scared silly to hand out millions in contracts for Chertoff X-ray porno scanners at our airports."
don't you think using this BS "threat" to take away americans freedoms would be more like using the BS "threat" chertoff used to take away freedom?
Well Thom as far as I'm concered, I don't want to loose my American Freedoms because of fear. Americans are not a Fearful people. Well I can't say that today, all I see is fearful Americans. I was in Desert Storm, Desert Sentry, Bosnia, Macidonia, then finaly Operation Iraqi Freedom. I didnt join the service to see Americans give up there rights. I rather die by a gun purchaced here in the united States by an Al Qaeda member then loose my American Freedoms. We should be willing to die for the Freedoms that this country was given. I know I am. We all ready, out of fear, given the goverment the ability to regulate every aspect of our life, because we think it is good to have the Goverment to babysit us (the Nanny State). Our freedoms are disapearing, and they are not being taken away, we are giving them up. And really I'm sick of seeing American doing this. They say they love there soldiers, but they do not respect them, if they just give up, and do not even fight for there rights in the uS home frount.
I love your show, because usally you see the ignorance of what is happening all around as. But I will never belive in giving up freedoms in order to do it. Maybe if so many Americans are afraid of Al Qaeda buying wepons in the uS, they should go out and buy them too. Then we can do whatever it takes to protect our country.
Sure, disarm the people....just what the ruling elite would love. It worked for Hitler and for Stalin. This whole story sounds like just another propaganda scare tactic to make Americans further give up being able to protect themselves. Take away the guns from the law-abiding citizenry and only the criminals will have them. The police?? They are being laid off because the rich won't pay their fair share of the taxes...and they never really protected us anyway. They were much better at oppressing us and protecting the real big-time thieves who run our banks and corporations. So keep up the talk and scare stories about Al Qaida and "terrorists" and the ruling elite won't even have to engineer false flag operations like 911 anymore.
Just keep voting for the party that is going to screw you anyway...nothing is going to change in our favor. We'll end up just like the starving peons in any of the third world countries scared to say anything for fear of the right-wing death squads who got their power by weanies, who pretend to be Democrats, who are really working undercover for the ruling elite to ensure that people vote for one or the other faction of the "business" party. Good cop, bad cop for the ruling elite.
And to titillate our prudish/priggish quid nuncian sensibilities we can all be distracted by more on-line weiners or stained blue dresses. Speaking of which....ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? A picture of a lump in some men's underwear is worthy of any kind of attention? Come off it, people! When I first heard of the stories of Weiner's weener I figured it was hard core...duh!!! underwear? That's all??? And if the underwear were just a swimming trunks? Wouldn't it have been a little bit different? I don't know...maybe they got around to censoring the real picture but I couldn't get over that it was just underwear.
Ha! Ha! lol lol.......Sure, sure...I know...it's all about how dumb it was and how unfaithful he was and all of that rot! The French have to be splitting a gut about how priggish, not to mention hypocritical, Americans are. But then...alas, the prudes are everywhere!
I used to be a firm advocate of gun control, I am Canadian and it seems like a great freedom not to always have to wear a bullet proof vest and wear a holster and pistol but...the last 2.5 yrs of the Great Depression have perhaps completely changed my mind.Knowing that you could instantly kill yourself when times get tough is a real comfort. Also as a communist I realize that the elite and the institutionalized injustice system known as Kaputalism, can't share or be fair so armed revolution may be neccessary.I am not naive enough to beleive that if we simply ask for fairness we will get it.What I would live, kill and die for is social injustice. Also with major white collar crime being treated like a victimless crime perhaps people have a right to take matters into their own hands.
After the Civil War the Republican members of Congress were called Radical Republicans because they changed the power of state governments and the federal government in radical ways. The current Republican party needs to be called the Regressive Republicans because they want the nation to regress to times before the New Deal, Medicare, a Progressive Income Tax, and labor rights. For example their concept of health savings accounts is identical to the "health program" by grandparents had. My grandparents paid medical expenses with the money they saved. Most Americans did not receive much medical care in the past under this savings program and women died in childbirth like my wife's grandmother.
Americans are not happy because of the wealth disparity. The vast majority of us will likely not be able to live the American Dream, that we have been told that if we work hard enough we will be able to achieve. Well apparently since production has gone up and wages remain stagnant this just simply is not true. I believe that government should run many things, that taxes on the rich should be proportional to their percentage of the wealth they have (are you in the top 1%, well then enjoy your 99% tax)... capitalism if it is to survive, if so many of us are clinging on to it like it is some infallable system, then it must be heavily regulated and not just by the government but by the people. Replace the legislative branch with an internet voting system, you can not buy out 300 million voters, and if the system is good enough for the financial transactions then it is good enough for voting (I get this argument all the time from people, but yet they are willing to send their credit card info over the net, but oh no note a single boolean for a vote.
Wonderful!!! But, it is too bad that most Americans do not read the Holy Bible. If they do read God's Love Letter to you and me, they do not understand what is written in the Holy Bible.
@Power Corrupts, thank you for the comment! Thom has issues with Reagan as do I. But, when Reagan was president the Democrats gave him what he wanted. The Conservative Crazies would not permit a Democratic president to have what he wanted. We have one party in this hell-hole country and it's the Money Party.
I was listening to Thom's show today, and he was espousing ideas, similar to the ideas in the article. He was adamant in saying that the way to create jobs was to put money into the hands of the unemployed, the lower classes, and that they will then consume, thus stimulating the economy and creating jobs.
While this may sound rational, this type of stimulus is a banker's/capitalists'/big crooked corporations' dream come true! When you put money into week hands, it's soon removed by the big corporations, the medical monopolies, and the big banks. Giving out spending money, to promote consumerism is a horrible idea, and Thom was very sincere in stating that this was the way to bring the economy back.
What we have is monetary dis-equilibrium. When you put money into the hands of "consumers" they will most certainly consume, using interest bearing credit. Since the big corporations, who manufacture all their goods overseas will be the beneficiary of this "stimulus", it won't do the middle, or lower classes any good, beyond giving them some new baubles, or trinkets to clutter their apartment with.
The caller he was talking to had a better idea, in the proposal to promote small businesses through tax incentives. Thom didn't like this at all! He likened it to giving money to "Fat Cats". Thom is associating small businesses with multi-national corporations. What Thom should first consider is that big corporations, such as Obama's favorite, GE don't pay ANY TAX, while taking full advantage of the commons and the government services that make their business much more profitable. The multi-nationals are also "in the market" for cheap labor, and more "efficient" regulations, which means they will go to the country with the lowest prevailing wages, and the least amount of environmental and worker protection regulations.
Since the "Fat Cats" already don't pay any taxes, and the lowest prices on wages, there has to be some effort to give the little businesses a chance to compete. The robber barrons are here, they just stay in the shadows, and like Nelson Rockefeller said..."competition is a sin" amongst the big politically connected corporations. So putting money into the hands of mindless, jobless "consumers", while great for banks and big corporations, won't do anything to raise the living standards of the lower and middle classes.
The only way to really give the lower and middle classes a real chance to improve their lives is to give them a stake in the system. Facilitate a business environment that allows small business to employ people, at a decent wage, in a job that is meaningful. That means eliminating the massive red-tape and government regulations that stiffle free enterprise. It means leveling the playing field and putting up some common sense tarrifs on goods imported from places that have much lower living standards.
Prior to the progressive Woodrow Wilson, the U.S.A. enjoyed 100 years of economic growth, funding the government entirely through import duties on business and corporations, and excise taxes, fully apportioned and consistent with the taxing power granted to the government in the Constitution. Then, in a revolutionary move, the big banksters, working with the Wilson administration changed everything in favor of the big monopolies by funding the government through personal income taxes on the working class! Giving the corporation the biggest tax break in HISTORY!
Our country was not founded as a Capitalist nation. The vast majority of us are not capitalists. A Capitalist is a banker, or someone endowed with the privilege of creating credit out of book entries. The ability to engage in fractional reserve banking, making money out of nothing, and earning interest on it. Our Nation was founded on the ideal of "free enterprise" and limited government. Capitalism is an elitist control mechanism, the modern version of fuedalism, where the endentured servant fastens his own chains, and maintains his own prison, giving all of his labors to the bankers. We are merely units of capital, on the capitalist's ledgers.
Thom, I agree with you in principal, but I believe your practical solutions will actually make things alot worse for the average american. Think: taxing imports, not handing out borrowed money to consumers. Think "Made in America", not "Paid in America, Made In China".
Our biggest problem by far is the fact that as a nation, we don't manufacture our own goods. The second, or equally as big a problem is the privileges the government grants to certain individuals and corporations to create credit (which is money, it spends the same) out of nothing, and earns interest on it. Fractional Reserve Banking is the most elitist system of neofeudalism ever created.
THE WASHINGTON POST : Facing widespread criticism for its handling of the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, the Japanese government on Tuesday announced its intention to create an independent nuclear agency, breaking up the ministry that both promotes and regulates atomic energy.
The decision to separate the regulator (the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, or NISA) from the promoter (the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, or METI) came as part of a government report that calls for several major overhauls in the way Japan operates its nuclear plants and provides information about the ongoing crisis. Previously, NISA was a subdivision of METI , an arrangement that critics say contributed to lax oversight of nuclear safety in Japan.
The report, to be submitted this month to the International Atomic Energy Agency, also serves as a reminder of the persisting challenges at the disaster-stricken facility. In it, Japan cites the “possibility” that melted fuel has penetrated the reactor pressure vessels in units 1, 2 and 3 and dropped onto the floors of the primary containment vessel. That acknowledgment came a day after the government doubled its estimate of the radiation released so far during the crisis.
The report is at once a pointed self-critique and a pledge to learn from mistakes. Many of its admissions are familiar, echoing assessments by international agencies and outside experts. They include acknowledgments that Fukushima Daiichi was unprepared for a tsunami and that the government was too slow to provide information on radiation to people in the disaster zone.
Let me give you something to think about. If a corporation is attracted to a state with low or no taxes, the state wins. The corporation (a single entity) may not pay taxes, but the hunderds or thousands of employess working for the corporation do pay taxes. Plus, if they were receiving unemployment from the state, that expense will stop. It's hard for me to understand why everyone gets so upset because one corporation doesn't pay taxes, but all the employees do. Some one explain that to me.
Your last caller, a right-wing talk show host, who commented about lowering or zeroing out taxes for corporations to attract them to his state as a good thing to get jobs is simply wrong. First of all look to Ireland, this is what they did in Europe. Just before the "crash" they were the new "shining star" over there and where are they now? Further I used to work in a Corporate Trust Department in a Bank in a State that did just what this caller suggests. Getting these low rates is much more than what you think (isn't it always)? Think about it. These corporations are already paying zero or negative in taxes right? So what would lowering or zeroing out their taxes actually do? I'll tell you. It all has to do with Bonds. These companies can take huge amounts of money (hundreds of millions) and issue bonds to THEMSELVES (of course under one of their subsidiary names). The interest on these bonds is HUGE, way above market value. Now remember the State has given them tax-free status so these corporations are getting this all tax free. They now take this tax-free bi-annual artificial mega profit and reinvest it in these bonds. As you can imagine it is in no time that these corporations are worth hundreds of billions to trillions all created with these artificial monetary tax-free instruments. This is the problem with having low to no taxes on the corporations and very rich. They pull their money OUT of their business and speculate driving up huge artificial amounts of imaginary money (a pyramid or ponzi scheme) which is exactly what Reaganomics or trickle-down is. By raising the tax rate to 50% or higher on corporations and the very rich they wont PAY but they WILL keep their money in their business investing in Jobs and R & D (which is EXACTLY what this country needs) as well as keeping them from creating all this artificial cash excess in the form of speculation which causes these crashes. Maybe not Econ 101 but Econ 202. Education is the savior of a civilization.
really, you don't know why that is? somehow i don't believe you. me thinks you are playing devils advocate, so i'll bite in order to flush you out:
its simple really, in general liberals (democrats) are people who share and who are compassionate and therefore they are compromisers; whereas conservatives (republicans) are greedy, arrogant, power hungry jerks who refuse to compromise with anyone, especially those who hope to help the less fortunate in our society. keeping that truth in mind, its easy to see how when a republican is president he can get things done with a democratically controlled congress and when a democrat is in office he faces opposition regardless of which party is in control of congress because the republicans will use whatever means necessary to block an agenda which is for the betterment of society as opposed to the betterment of their and their corporate sponsors wallets. case in point, Obama's first two years in office. you're right; he had majorities in both houses. unfortunately, dems didn't have a super majority (60 votes) in the senate to avoid a filibuster and the republicans shattered all records for the amount of times the filibuster was used. in fact, republicans are still blocking Obama's nominations so our gov't isn't really working properly. its crazy really. republicans have one thing in mind: make Obama look bad so they can blame him for their mistakes and take back control in 2012. forget about getting out of the recession; they want to prolong the recession so they can call it Obama's recession as opposed to Bush's....which we all know it is...
now that i've taken your bait and stepped in your proverbial $h1t, I await your partisan, baloney response....
So since we can all agree that "it’s now just about corporate profits." What makes you think that electing the right people will change anything? Nothing changes without movements. And we have no movements because not enough people are hurting enough. We also have the largest disparity of wealth at a time when it takes millions of dollars to win an election.
Liberal or conservative, it makes no difference. Barack Obama serves corporate interests as assiduously as did George W. Bush. So to place our faith in any party or established institution as a mechanism for reform is to be entranced by the celluloid shadows on the wall of Plato’s cave.
As far as Anthony's Wiener goes, I don't care. But I do wonder was it all one sided, I mean were these women reciprocating with photos to him... and who initiated what. After all think about it, Wiener is a Celebrity (pseudo, but Celebrity nonetheless) and since he's in the public light he's going to attract people. So perhaps being flattered with flirtation he lost his head. I wonder too how much this was a bad decision based on temptation and how much it is a character flaw, and how much it was just stupidly not realizing the compromising position he was putting himself in. That being said, I don't see it relating to his job, so I see no reason for him to resign.
Ummm can't you get private insurance in Canada if you want to pay for it? I mean if Seton doesn't want Government Health Care if America had it, then he can go buy it from Blue Cross, or Kaiser, or HealthNet, or... whatever, and those of us who can't afford premium private health care can still get adequate health care instead of none. I'm sick and tired of listening to privileged a**holes who don't want their pampered high cost insurance messed with, as though they have more right to health care because they have the money to pay for it.
Another impediment to destroy public education!!! Here are other impediments – charter schools, private schools, parochial schools, religious schools, and home schools.
When my wife and I were driving to the hospital for my procedure, there was a sign on the road that gave a telephone number for information and possible free tuition to enter the Virtual School program.
The Little Old Lady
The little old lady was on an elevator in mid-town Detroit. Two very attractive women came upon the elevator and they talked on various subjects. The one area was the cost of perfume. One woman said she paid $150 per ounce for her perfume and the other woman said she paid $130 per ounce for her perfume. The little old lady arrived at her floor. Before leaving the elevator she was at the doorway and turned sideways; she bent over and farted; and she said to the attractive women, “Broccoli, 59 cents a pound!”

What about "Operation Fast and Furious"?
It's an operation by the US Government to arm Mexican Drug Gangs!
We always arm our enemies then wonder why they kill us!

Civil Public Protests are all we have left.....
