Nice comments on Fox, but I seriously doubt that Fox would ever voluntarily change its misleading "News" title, or any of its other odious practices. Corporate accountability is not an issue with Fox, in fact they are in every sense possible opposed to accountability being applied to the conservative meme.

I don't know about the "Fairness Doctrine" being necessary, but indeed there needs to be a consideration of the legality of bare propaganda and lying allowed by media outlets. You can't bare false witness in a court of law, its known as perjury, however, its perfectly legal to lie in print, on the radio, and TV. There is no legal ramifications for it. Hell I could be arrested for going into a crowed public place and yelling "FIRE", but I can go on TV and say the Government wants to kill your grandmother, and I can actually hope to be elected to public office for it?!! Which statement does more harm to society though?

Freedom of speech is not a license to lie, but you'd be hard pressed to find evidence of that.

Regarding Glenn Beck and advertisers: Thom said that the CEO of the Tides Foundation is calling on advertisers to boycott Fox News. I hope that is exactly what he's doing, because I just read that Glenn Beck's show, while having very high ratings, has very few advertisers and that's apparently ok with Fox. If advertisers were pressured to not give Fox any money for any of their shows, that would have an effect. They're so rich that they don't care about losing advertising dollars for a popular show, and we know they have no ethics.

A Mortal Sin country has two objectives - to enslave the world population and to take-over the world's natural resources and one goal - world domination.

There has been more talk of our eternal wars. Americans are now conditioned to live with ongoing warfare.

Anybody know about what Naomi Klein said about Mr. O's presidency today? I just heard a little of it. It sounded like it was really harsh. They showed a picture of her and then a picture of a 60's activist or someone that looked like one. Anyone?

    War and Our Youth

On October 16, 2010 I heard a homily at Mass. It was on prayer. Prayer must be focused and pointed. Prayer is a communication with God. We are to pray and not lose heart. “Ask and it will be given to you, everyone who asks receives” is a statement of faith. I pray every day for justice and peace. The odds for justice and peace are not good because the United States of Mortal Sin is the most evil, vile, and wicked nation on earth. Our country is involved in a one hundred year war and that means we will always be at war. Our children will never know justice and peace in their lifetime. Our children will grow to love war and embrace it. War and the love of war is part of the American psyche. We are a nation of misfits.

Even though our prayers for justice and peace will not be answered, I find the words of wife and cousin sustaining me, such as “in ten years it will not really matter anymore” and we came in at the right time and we are leaving at the right time.”

My God, my God, what have our American government and the American people been doing to our children? Americans will only despair and be relegated to a life of programmed zombies.

The 2010 midterms will see an epic slaughter of the Democratic Party. Obama will be a one term president. He has totally dismantled the the Democratic Party. The Grand Experiment has failed.

I think a lack of education is why so many of us don't take to the streets for anything these days. This is education by both schools and the media.

Thom, If the Democrats and progressives in America want to move forward they need to be much more aggressive in Congress. Milk Toast Harry Reed looks like a Quaker in the middle of a war zone, he is completely and grossly ineffective in leading the Senate.

Every time we get a Republican President or Congress, they play hard ball and ram through legislation like their last tax cut and their appointment of radical judges to the Supreme Court like Roberts and Alito. I can't even remember the last time that the Democrats used the filibuster in the Senate.

Last time I checked Homosexuals were't very good at procreation and there seems to be reasonable abundance of technology for birth control to meet the needs of less controversial sexual orientation. This does not please Wall Street however. The more mouths to feed the higher the demand for goods and services $$$$$$$ plain and simple. Screw em. They can stand in line for a can a beans along with the rest of us.

Material to ponder on this "anything goes" Friday

Yes, by all means, register to vote; vote, weed out spineless candidates but Work to Create the Condition that Genuinely Makes Your Vote Count

Simply put, votes that are not counted in the final tally don’t count in the election. And today, elections can be designed to change and thereby eliminate your thoughtful vote and then use it as a vote for your political opponent. Clearly the best way of circumventing the malignity of fraud by voting machines, is just not to use voting machines; instead, “publicly monitored and publicly counted paper ballots” should be the voting method in order to realize clean and healthy elections.

Here find videos from Princeton University and UCSB that show the tamper-ease afforded by voting machines and the manifold probabilities of rigging elections; please view them and then, in any humanistic way that you can, work to eliminate voting machines and support, instead, the use of the simple and reliable monitor-friendly paper ballot.

Apparently, without an honest vote count, greedy corporate tricksters have eliminated the people’s say in government. The result is the USA becoming a corporatocracy/oligarchy of United Slaves and Aristocrats. The catch 22 is: how do you change from this cyber status quo? You can’t very well have a voters’ referendum to change from voting machines to paper ballots if rigged voting machines are used in the referendum. The Videos follow:

    Complete Princeton presentation: http://citp.princeton.edu/voting/advantage/video.html

    Overview and dramatization

UCSB next: How your vote can be compromised.

The mysterious tamper-friendly (apparently designed for deceit and quick modification) voting machines are just too tempting for vote stealers to steal votes in many known and possibly yet unknown ways. The People want paper ballots counted and verified in an open public place. The rules should not be made by those who would break the rules. Shouldn’t everyone in the United States want fair elections? In light of the above studies, it appears that anyone advocating voting machines should be suspect as one who condones cheating or who at least can be persuaded when a highly influential person or corporation tells him or her not to worry but to “go ahead and run for office; and if you really want to help our mutual cause – be it religion or corporate exclusivity – we will guarantee that you win the election. Come on it’ll be fun!”

These opportunists with high buck personal agendas and their high tech stumbling-block machines - designed to create a loss of footing for political opponents - may be anywhere on the political scaffold that is advantageous to them, pervasive or intermittent on various levels. So eliminate cross-party Corporatocracy-aiding voting machines; they can be fixed and they appear to be costing taxpayers elections and big big bucks much better used elsewhere.

  • The hottest political show in the US finds a new home on TV   14 years 35 weeks ago

    Thom,

I am tagged and it and am trying to share progressive ideas with my fox news brainwashed friends and family. Every time I get them to listen or watch your show, and you call Rush Limbaugh "Rush Limpballs", we lose them because you have offended their hero. You are so different than Rush, so civil and fair to your guests, plus you deal from the truth rather than create strawmen to argue with like he does. I can't stand him either but you are shooting yourself and all of us in the foot when you call him "Limpballs" so please restrain yourself! Stay nice!

Keep up the good work, we need you.

  • The Republican Party has lurched so far to the right that Dwight Eisenhower would not be elected!   14 years 35 weeks ago

Dirt Harry and the Draft. As we stand by in shock watching how far the country has drifted to the right, we can only wonder. What could have made a seemingly rational populous be turned so strongly from common sense thinking to being so easily swayed by no- factual reasoning? - Where the main advocates for this faith based reasoning will not even allow themselves to be questioned by anything close to an objective media. Where the followers of these advocates so militantly reject any criticism of their leaders or any attempts to make them show any accountability for their statements or stands on the issues.

Ironically, much of this phenomenon may be blow-back from ending the military draft. Although, like many liberals of that time, I too was opposed to the draft and felt that it was a major step forward for this country when it was ended in the 1970's. However, in retrospect, I've come to believe there were intangible factors that we could not have predicted that would support keeping the draft.

The draft may have been the single issue that united all Americans and kept them connected to the government. The one thing that directly affected the thinking of every American and held them accountable to each other. Whereas, other policies and government actions may seem arbitrary and obscure, the responsibility of causing your loved ones to be sent off to war is one thing that every American could easily relate to and therefore cause them to consider the true character of those that they elect to government office.

After the draft ended, the thinking seemed to be, let the party begin, ushering in the beginning of the "Me" generation and the age of excess consumerism. The Dirty Harry era of, "the ends, justify the means". No longer did loyalty to each other or the country have to be proven with sacrificing ones life. Now, all you had to do was buy a bumper sticker and let those from less fortunate circumstances take up the bulk of the military duty. The era where fantasies became preferred to the truth.
