FBI agents have seized a laptop and documents form the Chicago home of a Hatem Abudayyeh, a well-known anti-war activist and US citizen, in an "attempt to silence his advocacy," said attorney Jim Fennerty, Executive Director of the Arab American Action Network. As many as eight addresses in both Chicago and Minneapolis were searched by the FBI on Friday. Fennerty says, "The government is trying to quiet activists...this case is really scary." Six warrants were served in Minneapolis and two more in Chicago, although the FBI maintains there was no imminent threat to the community and no arrests have been made. If this had been done during the Bush Presidency, Democrats and progressives would be screaming about the creeping imposition of a police state. But how are these any less police state tactics when done by the Obama administration?

In a clear and compelling voice, it explains the worst environmental catastrophe of our time, then shows the way forward to protect this national treasure, safeguard our future and break our destructive addiction to oil."

If I shop in a downtown area full of small, locally-owned businesses, and at the end of the day the store owners deposit the money in local banks, then those banks can lend the money to local people to create or build more businesses, which will deposit more money in local banks, and so on. By keeping money within the community, the community grows. This is how communities in America and most of the rest of the world have historically grown.
But if my shopping trip had been to a mall full of chain stores or to a national superstore, the money stays in town for only a day at best. Every night, all around America, buttons are pushed that – like vampires draining blood from sleeping people – drain cash away from local communities, most of it never to be seen in town again.
Although the companies pay a small amount of their revenue back in local taxes and payroll and services, most of it is sucked up nightly into each company’s headquarters bank in Chicago or Little Rock or New York or wherever it may be. And most of that money never returns to the local community.
This is how you destroy local communities; it’s the opposite of a healthy economy.

At what point have we lost liberty because we lost privacy?
Then why don't the companies that support it abandon all of those protectionist ideas of "trade secrets," non-compete clauses, royalties and intellectual property? Isn't that what they are asking us to do? They want us to give up some of our market share of labor, skill and income. So why shouldn't they?
Eamonn Fingleton is solid and I like his insight but: Where is Ravi Batra? To close out the first hour you said (hopefully only gratuitously) he is "our favorite Economist." I'd like to point out that we haven't heard from Ravi Batra in Too Long! Where is he, and what does he think about our current sad state of affairs? Or has nothing really changed in the 9 months since you've had him on?
Unions are only one facet of Occupational Birth Control. Include the American Medical Association's restricting medical schools and lawyers controlling membership in the Bar Association, just for a couple of examples.
I say we call Tom Coburn's bluff. He says he doesn't want to set up another gov't bureacracy to hand out the relief money to the Haitians, why not get a non-profit to do it or have some people put something together and do it themselves? Or maybe have the American Red Cross deal with the administration of the relief funds. That wouldn't cost anything. And he couldn't complain or hold up the funding.
I want to share with you how insidious our politicians are in having our people go into immoral and wrong wars. The American psyche craves to be killed in these wars because it is a glorious death for the fatherland.
I don't know much about banking, but if the State Bank of North Dakota is doing right by its State, I for my State going with that too. California needs all the help it can get right now.
Seems to be a time delay lately getting the daily blog up. Can't wait for the show to get settled in.
Keep up the good work support personnel of the Thom Show, we can wait patiently well you get everything sorted out. I know its got to be tough to get everything into ship shape.
When we have unfunded tax cuts, taxpayers get government services – from parks to schools to welfare and expanded unemployment payments – at a lower cost than they did before the tax cuts. And, like with anything else, lower cost translates into more demand. Former libertarian CATO Institute chairman William A. Niskanen discovered the tipping point: whenever taxes are below 19 percent of GDP, government grows in size and spending (usually military, but others as well) like a fat man at a pie-eating contest. As Atlantic Monthly writer Jonathan Rauch noted, “the way to limit the growth of government is to force politicians, and therefore voters, to pay for all the government they use – not to give them a discount.” And that means raising taxes to a point above 19 percent of GDP.
Each day you can find more about how to reboot the American dream, one chapter per week, usually in the right hand column of the newsletter.

More American soldiers are committing suicide in Iraq than who are being killed in combat!!! These soldiers are refusing to kill God's children!!! Is this fact comparable to refusing to fight in order to stop our federal government's murderous ways???
President Obama said the Democratic voters should buck up. It's the Democrats in Washington who need to buck up. The Democrats' base bucked up and got the Democrats the majority in 2006, but the Democrats said they couldn't do anything because they only had a slim majority and there was a Republican in the White House. The base bucked up again in 2008 and got the Democrats a bigger majority in Congress and the White House; but the Democrats continued caving, backpedaling, and being outmaneuvered by the Republicans and the blue dogs. It's bad enough that the Democrats in Washington are angering and demoralizing the base; but you would think that they would at least stick up for themselves in their own best interest. But their first impulse has been to backpedal; such as abandoning ACORN while by contrast the Republicans engage in voter caging, dumped voters off the rolls in Florida in 2000, etc,. and the Democrats won't even investigate election fraud. Another example is the White House abandoning Van Jones while by contrast George Bush made egregious recess appointments like John Bolton. Still another example is the Democrats took impeachment and investigation off the table; by contrast the Republicans have put impeachment on the table if ---God forbid--- they gain the majority, and even if they fail at impeachment, there is little doubt that the GOP would lay siege to the White House and to the Dems in Congress. The Democrats need to stop trying to avoid conflict with the Republicans; the Republicans are not going to let them avoid conflict, so Democrats might as well deal with it.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
Thom, there's a reason the government runs certain "industries".
Responding to your "Winger" guest, we can't have dozens of private mail companies, all with their own trucks, clogging our traffic and covering the same routes to deliver local mail to different customers in the same neighborhood.
Likewise, individuals can "sign up" for service by a private fire department that only puts out the fire on YOUR home and ignores your neighbor, or does both homes and then sends the neighbor a hugely inflated bill for service by a company they never signed up with.
People that think we can "privatize everything" just aren't dealing in reality.

Well, mocking and ridiculing his base is certainly no way to prevent his base from losing heart, and inspire them to "stand up and fight."

The GOP have expanded government when they were in power. The GOP can spread their lies because Americans have very short memories.

Re today's libertarian guest (thx to P. Krugman):
The best line I’ve ever heard about Ayn Rand’s influence:
